To address the mixed feedback we've been getting about this experimental format - we definitely hear you and appreciate all of the comments and criticism!
To share my creative thought process, when I thought of putting myself on camera and exposing my (lack of) cooking skills and opening up myself to the free-for-all opinions of the internet, it was scary and still is.
However, I was (and still am) excited for the format because...
    - I thought it would be more educational to highlight what my dad and I are doing differently. My dad doesn't always think to call out certain nuances of his techniques, and showing what I do as a beginner is a way to contrast that.
    - I thought it'd be a more fun, relatable way to capture our father-son relationship, which has always been a driving force behind the content we've been sharing.
    - I generally do want to learn how to make these dishes for my kids, and I want to make cooking more of a habit in my own life, whether or not it's filmed and shared on RUclips. My dad never taught me how to cook because he wanted me to focus on school, and he didn't want me to suffer like he did in sweaty kitchens toiling away for 12 hours a day.
I acknowledge that the format isn't perfect, that it takes longer to get through a recipe video (although we do have a blog for this very reason!), and that it's not for everyone. I always want to make content that our community enjoys and finds valuable, and balance that with continuing to evolve as a storyteller, artist, and human.
I obviously have a lot of work to do on this format but hopefully it will eventually evolve into a style that more people find engaging and valuable.
    Thanks for watching!

I can't speak for others, but I genuinely enjoy this format. Sure it would be more efficient or straightforward to do the older 1,2,3 style but as the cook of the family who has people trying to learn, it really helps to have your perspective in the pro video.

I, for one, am hoping you keep this going as long as possible. I'm not only enjoying the family dynamic, but I also hope you keep doing this long enough that we get to see you improve. I hope we get to have some "flashback episodes" showing how slow you were before, and how much you've improved in a couple of years. Fingers crossed!

I enjoy this format as well and I think it is a great addition to the ones where it's just Daddy doing all the cooking. No reason why we can't have both kinds of formats present. There is nothing like Cantonese parents or grandparents when they are trying to teach you something they think is so basic, I love how I can always relate to Randy in those moments! (If only Randy could simulate the terror of bringing home a C on my report card, my childhood represented on this channel will be complete.)

I enjoy this format as a change of pace, and seeing the beginner vs master is quite funny and relatable XD Perhaps a mix of the two formats would help with the balance, as in .
alternating formats between videos? Or a separate series of you following your dad's instructions in previous videos to recreate a recipe?

I don't know if your dad is retired at this point - but let me tell you, as someone with retired parent, that your "Made With Lau" project is a TERRIFIC concept to keep your dad going. I'm certain this gives him a feeling of purpose and importance in his life. You're a good son, and you've got good parents for helping you get to this point.

There is nothing more special than families cooking together. I love watching how you and your dad bond over cooking. I also like that it takes a little longer when you cook with him because it gives us time to get things together. The other night we made his Beef & Broccoli and it came out awesome! We also love your humor when your cooking and how you put your videos together. Great editing! Watching the interaction when you all sit down to eat and answering questions from viewers is extremely helpful. You do such an amazing job. You have such a beautiful family. Thank you!

I love this type of format! It's really helpful to see the struggles "normal" beginner cooks expereince while going through the process of learning a new recipe. Thank you Randy and Daddy Lau for your recipes. I'm Taiwanese but these recipes still bring nostalgia and comfort for me. I recently made the walnut shrimp and stir fried green beans for my friends during a dinner party and they absolutely loved them! Definitely not comparable to Daddy Lau's, but that's why this format of seeing you also learn along the way is encouraging.

Watching you stretch yourself with your dad guiding you-dude that’s what family is all about. Plus you are getting (a little) better with that awesome knife (which I still need to get).

I have to really give you credit. Your videos have the perfect blend of humor and clear concise information, moving along at a proper pace for educating us, your viewers. Some other guy's videos rock it along too quickly to just get through it, and others try to "decorate" the video with background music and other distractions, or drag it on endlessly with irrelevant stories. I REALLY appreciate hearing all of your dad's candid comments, miniscule as they may seem at times, as it gives a 3-dimensional perspective about why he does it "this way". I don't understand your heritage language, but the subtitles capture everything perfectly. This helps me, the guy with eastern European background to learn the techniques that your father can share from his vast experience. Please pass along my sincerest appreciation for his willingness to be part of your great teaching outreach. 7 out of 5 stars for sure! wishing you all health and prosperity as you go forward...

I've known parents who only feed their kids "kids' food," like mac and cheese, PB&J sandwiches, plain crackers. How do their kids not end up malnourished?! Your children will appreciate real food, and cultural food, and it's wonderful! Cooking and eating is a family affair!

One of the best gifts my dad gave me was to be his sous chef from age 12 and up. Dad learned all his Canto and Toisan dishes and proper knife skills and techniques from his mom, and from Chinese restaurant chefs. Learning how to prep vegetables and prepare and keep your space clean was the best thing he ever taught me. I love seeing your relationship and hearing the Canto, but maybe you can get more training on knife skills prepping veggies on a daily basis. You'll be chopping with confidence in no time! I would watch the long term progression of your kitchen techniques. You have a master to learn from!

I think this is really sweet. It's always fun to see a father cook with his son. Furthermore, it's great that you got in the kitchen and tried some things that you were unfamiliar with. Is it going to be a bit clumsy the first time, or even the first few times? Sure. That's not a problem though- you are learning. Every time you make it it will get better and I never forget what my mom taught me when I got more seriously into cooking 3 years ago: even if it's not perfect, it is highly unlikely you will make something completely inedible and anyone you serve will be very grateful you cooked for them.
I've also found that sharing food that you cooked is a surprisingly intimate way to show love and affection. I'm proud of you for giving it a shot, and I know your dad and entire family is too. Keep up the cooking!

The other thing to note here is that this video is a GREAT way of making these recipes even more approachable for the average or even beginner cook. You are not an experienced cook self-admittedly, and you show everyone that it can indeed be done.

Filtering oil... I've tried everything (big mess). Now, I just put the dirty oil aside for about a week in SQUARE tupperware. Gravity slowly settles the crud to the bottom . I then pour off the clean oil and dump the crud and sometimes even save it to add flavor and texture to gravy. The corner of square tupperware makes a perfect pouring spout. To freshen up old oil, some Chinese chefs add a few slices of ginger to it. It helps a bit.

I loved this video. I also like the concept. I think you can have both Randy alone and the teaching videos as separate types. I don't think one over the other is better individually. Together, it's a nice mix of content.
Also, this video has showed me ALL the errors I have been making with fried chicken and how to fix them. You both are awesome!

When I looked at the way you were holding the knife and the way you cut the meat and had made me felt even more glad that I started teaching my son how to cook at very young age. You really need to step up big time as we would normally describe you as “姐手姐腳”, just ask your dad what that means!

Wow! That's a lot of negative comments! Though I kind of agree with them. I really miss the videos where your dad teaches a recipe and l believe I mentioned it on a previous video as well. I really enjoy learning from your dad!
Perhaps one idea is for you to try to cook a recipe your dad has shown on a previous video. You can reference the video and link it so your viewers can watch the old video as well.
I applaud you for wanting to learn your dad's recipes and pass them down. Everyone has to start somewhere and it's brave of you to make your first attempt on the internet like this. Bravo!!

You may not be an expert on cutting chicken wings but I can see the love you have for each other. This is a fab project for you all and the fact that your dad is passing his knowledge of Cantonese cuisine is A++. His recipes are authentic, fabulous and tasty, not too mention reminding many of us younger ones (if only lol) to get back to the kitchen to copy all this yummy food. I have worked with many chefs who would tell you to go for a break to keep their recipes secret!
Keep it up. Much love from UK😍

Never had a dad myself as he passed away just when I was about to be born.Ah Pak is a good father figure for me!❤️

This format is awful and it's such an obvious way to increase the video's minutes. It's sad the videos are going more for revenue rather than authenticity which made the channel great and heart warming to start with. The really fake and over-exaggerated facial/hand gestures and reactions from Randy don't help either.
The reply to the criticism is also disappointing. Essentially "I hear you all, but naaah". It really isn't educational.
