Miriam Makeba, nicknamed Mama Africa, (Prospect Township near Johannesburg, March 4, 1932 - Caserta (Italy), November 10, 2008) was a South African singer. She was an active opponent of the South African apartheid policy and therefore lived in exile for thirty years from 1959. Makeba broke through in the 1950s as a jazz singer. Her political activism brought her to the United Nations in 1963, where she advocated against apartheid. She went to live in the United States. In 1966 she won a Grammy for An Evening With Belafonte / Makeba, a collaboration with Harry Belafonte. A year later she scored a worldwide hit with the song Pata Pata.
