It was great meeting you and Cole in front of the hannaford supermarket in Milton, vt. I’m glad you guys had a great time in Vermont. I was shocked when I saw orangey in town. I had to introduce myself to you guys. Thanks again. Adventure is afoot.
It was great seeing you work on your Jeep! Many great videographers & story tellers don’t work on their rigs at all. Congratulations on expanding your skills. 👍🏼
Just watched this video. Thank You. Hope your foot heals quick. You were in my hometown. I used to work at the Pemaquid Co op. Now Pemaquid. Seafood. We were there and at the Lighthouse last year. Awesome places.
HI CHRIS & SHANNON 👋 BEAUTIFUL AREA ! GORGEOUS WEATHER SCENERY COLORS VIEWS BEAUTY LANDSCAPE CAMPSITES . THE FOOD LOOKED AMAZING MADE HUNGRY 😋 THE PLACES LOOKED VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF . THE PUP LOOKED HAPPY & VERY MUCH LOVED ! YOU BOTH BE CAREFUL DRIVING DIFFERENT ROUTE TO MEET UP LATER ! CHRIS I'M GLAD YOU & SHANNON HAD A GREAT TIME WITH YOUR SON TOO ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! Hey, I've eaten at the very lobster place before! and you are right- everything about the experience was the quintessential Maine experience! Glad you found it too!
A friends jeep had exactly the same noise. Like you Chris, two independent shops couldn't track down the noise. With the help of some friends we decided to see if we could replicate the sound in the driveway, by simply pushing the jeep with the engine off, and the steering at full lock. Surprisingly the noise was still there. Long story short.. Given pretty much everything in the front end had been replaced over the past few months..all bushes etc, we decided to focus on the front U joint area. First backing off the hub nut, and to our surprise the noise disappeared. And with the hub re tightened the noise returned. The solution was to disassembled the front knuckle assembly, clean off the rusty U joint and hub splines, check U joint, fresh grease and reassemble. Problem solved. Something to note is, the sound you're hearing is actually being released through the tin disk brake dust shield. If you place your finger on the cover with some pressure the pitch of the noise changes from a high pitch metallic 'twang', to more of a dull thud. Hope this helps.
I’m excited to see your new adventure with your cheap going into Quebec I don’t care what you name your blogs what numbers you use whatever you make the letters F you there if you want to as long as you’re recording I have something to look forward to every Saturday I’ve learned so much watching your videos and I have discovered so many new places because of your videos I love this channel
When we were last in Vermont, we stayed at Tyler Place Family Resort. It sits right on the lake, north of Burlington. Our son was 2 years old. He’s now 23!
Do yourself a favor when your in the North Central USA. Cruise though Duluth MN and then onto the area on the Kettle River just east of International Falls.....and near the Boundary Watters wilderness area. (Your likely not in shape for the Bourndry Waters.....grin. Rugged country and lots of room to explore what this great country used to be. Enjoy your travels.
Chris I agree. I also believe it's the axle u-joint or ball joint. My recent experience with my 08 JKU was all of the above. I say that because I just replaced everything (upper and lower ball joints) track bar and tie rods as well. The popping and death wobble went away. Take care and happy travels.
Bons voyages au Québec, and I look forward to following your adventures again!! It’ll be like old times! Just don’t go hurting yourself on your own in the back woods, 1000’s of kms from civilization, buddy, eh! 🇨🇦
My trackbar bushings were worn out and caused mine to pop when I turned the steering wheel left to right, especially if I was moving slow. iirc the bolt hole holding my trackbar bolt on the frame side had slop in it and when it was under a load it would pop and move.
Sounds like the half shaft u-joint is popping as it seems to occur when you turn the steering wheel: the ball joints don’t seem to be articulating when it pops. However drivetrain squeaks and clicks are difficult to diagnose, good luck!
Have you checked your ball joints? Lift the Jeep up, put a long pole under the tire like a lever. Have Shannon lift the lever while you look at your ball joints for upward and downward movement.
Great to see you’re back in Maine. Last time you were here I found your channel. forward to your trip to Quebec, fingers crossed 🤞 you make it on the Trans Taiga or maybe all the way up to Caniapiscau ‼️
Looks like you might be passing through Skowhegan on your way to Quebec, hope I get a glimpse of that orange jeep, thanks for the video, hope you’re healing
Hey Chris, if you want to get that front driveshaft tuned up before you head into Canuckistan, my driveshaft shop is in Portland. Looks like your a bit further up the coast currently. But if you were traveling through anyway…
Sounds like the track bar to me but there’s a lot of joints in a jk front end. My wife’s jeep was making that noise and it was the track bar bolt on the axle end.
Yep I was thinking u-joints. Be good to go through those anyways because that is the weakest link in the front axle. I switched to RCV's to avoid the inevitable failure.
The noise in the front does sound like a axle u joint jack it up and turn the wheel left or right as tight as it will go then spin the wheel and see if you can feel any binding
Don't know how long you plan to stay in Maine but look up ghost trains of north Maine woods you might like it or the b52 crash site in Greenville both are cool historical sites
the camera placement could be doing weird things but it sounds like (also your description of "only underload") that it is coming from the rear left. Like e-locker sticking? You can reproduce the noise by turning right so that leads you to a front end issue but the video points to the rear. The front drive shaft is disconnected so load couldn’t effect the noise if it was front end. I would definitely pull the rear diff cover and have a look.
FIXED. Had exact same popping/cracking noise coming from my 2020 Gladiator 1 year after I bought it. It was fixed by dealer. Repair invoice stated “install new inner shaft, bearing, bushing and outer shaft as per star case”. No problems since then! Hope this helps.
When you said it easily reproduced when the locker is on, that sound makes me wonder if the splines of one of the front axels are slipping in the carrier????
Hey Chris. Check the joints axles. I think your problem could be there.. also check the play between the axles and th the differential. Good luck and big hug..
You guys have to go up to Lubec and the West Quoddy State Park! Campobello Island! Just a couple hours north! There is also an amazing pizza place in town!
Hey Chris....if you are going to be in the U.P. in a few weeks there is an event called K.OA.R. going on Sept 15-18 in Copper Harbor. Its the Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat. You should swing by! Its held at Trails End Campground! I would LOVE to meet you and maybe do some trail riding with you! There will be other RUclips explorers there! Check it out, KOAR, on RUclips and maybe I'll see you there!!
I had a similar sound on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler coming from my drivers side wheel, took the dealership 5 days to figure out it was the wheel bearing. Not sure your shop checked they or not, hope you get it fixed before your trip to Canada.. safe travels Chris..
i think the key here is 'with lockers on' and then you turn. -- if the lockers are on, turning puts the inside wheel (right wheel in your video) under more load-- its dragging on the ground because it wants to go slower than the outside (left) wheel. so what are the stresses there? CV axle splines, maybe front differential gears, maybe bearings? BUT-- that sounds one helluva lot like a ball joint popping too, like the previous poster said....its giving me PTSD from the time i had a ball joint start to go out in the grand canyon and prayed for it to hold on all the way back to denver.
Don't discount the lake superior north shore. From Ontario to Duluth, Minnesota, highway 61 is a beautiful drive with good roads and plenty of food, fuel and camping.
Hard to tell from any type of remote audio but I would start looking at outer u-joints then check diff for metal shavings. Sounds more like a bearing than a bushing to my ear
Maybe mic on extension attached to spots. Or mechanic style solid rod stethoscope tied to spots.ight get you closer by following vibration. It sounds very hard bouncy not good long term.
Even as a contractor/1099 employee if the company has any government contracts or subcontractor for another company you probably have to get some certification that allows you to outsource internationally and yes Canada is a sovereign country and yes she would be working on foreign soil plus any work she does Canada she now gets to pay taxes in Canada and she would need a work visa. Sorry for the long explanation.
I had loose threads in my adjustable track bar and they would pop as they rode over each other. I didn't know what it was until the end completely came out of the shaft.
When turning R is when we hear it but then you immediately turn straight. Try turning R and see if it happens twice. Does it do it turning L? Something in steering??
Maybe the clicking noise comes from your suspension caused by the weight shift when you turn the wheel that hard...🤔- but Obviously I am not a car mechanic...
Chris, Shannon's work doesn't want her working from Canada because they don't want to have to deal with paying Canadian taxes. As for the front end noise, it sounded like some type of spring twang. Like a spring was under tension and popped loose. Good luck with that one.
No it’s because they don’t want Americans coming across the border and possibly taking jobs away from Canadians, just like the Americans do to Canadians.
Is there anyway you can feel around for vibrations when the pop occurs, placing your hand on different components as someone turns the wheel. It sounds like a healthy pop, something that might cause a vibration.
Your channel is inspiring, you and your family (Shannon, dog and son) take us all on adventures out doors, thank you and a very nice scenic video.
It was great meeting you and Cole in front of the hannaford supermarket in Milton, vt. I’m glad you guys had a great time in Vermont. I was shocked when I saw orangey in town. I had to introduce myself to you guys. Thanks again. Adventure is afoot.
Glad you are healing.......Thanx for taking us along:)
I really liked this episode. Calm and chill! looking forward to canada though!
It was great seeing you work on your Jeep! Many great videographers & story tellers don’t work on their rigs at all. Congratulations on expanding your skills. 👍🏼
Your chanel gets better and better. Thanks for sharing.
Just watched this video. Thank You. Hope your foot heals quick. You were in my hometown. I used to work at the Pemaquid Co op. Now Pemaquid. Seafood. We were there and at the Lighthouse last year. Awesome places.
So good to see you headed north again! Welcome back to Maine!

Cant wait to see you on the roads of Québec ! It looks like you are gonna visit the Baie James ? Wow ! Amazing ! Bienvenu au Québec again !
Hey, I've eaten at the very lobster place before! and you are right- everything about the experience was the quintessential Maine experience! Glad you found it too!
You passed me in pemaquid was the highlight of my day

Love Maine and the wicked good lobstah😏Looking forward to seeing Canada! 🥾🥾😎
Welcome I am sitting over here in Wiscasset Maine next door watching this video.
Universal joint in your steering shaft at the steering box.
Yes, that is a guess. 😉
Hey, I used to live in Pembroke near Round Pond.....great area
Great state of Maine thanks for visiting good choices for fun

Welcome back to Quebec folks!! Hope that this episode will be less rock and roll then the last one 😉
Loll Oui
When we were last in Vermont, we stayed at Tyler Place Family Resort. It sits right on the lake, north of Burlington. Our son was 2 years old. He’s now 23!
Burlington Vermont, home of the greatest band ever

Loved the video. Beautiful scenery. Loved seeing the restaurants. All the seafood looked great. Continue having a great time.

Looking forward to this new epic adventure into Canada and Michigan.
Good luck!

Injuries, sammiches, and pizza! 😄
KITTERY TRADING POST!! GET SOME GOOD LEATHER BOOTS!!! NO MORE BROKE BONES!!
Chris, I’d love to see you at Overland Expo East in October!
Nothing like Maine Lobster. It is the best.
Bonjour! Welcome to Quebec! hope you will anjoy your trip!
Lookikg forward to seeing videos in canada. Lets visit Newfoundland again. Im currently camping in our jeep tonight. Good luck!
My trackbar bushings were worn out and caused mine to pop when I turned the steering wheel left to right, especially if I was moving slow. iirc the bolt hole holding my trackbar bolt on the frame side had slop in it and when it was under a load it would pop and move.
Track bar is my first guess too

Adventure is an orthopedic boot
To me, the sound may be the mud shield. Light metal and the ring is the give away to me.
Have you checked your ball joints? Lift the Jeep up, put a long pole under the tire like a lever. Have Shannon lift the lever while you look at your ball joints for upward and downward movement.
You are spot on Jeremy!!
2nd
That was my first thought as well. Also check the ujoints on the axle. I’ve seen those cause a similar noise when worn.
Great to see you’re back in Maine. Last time you were here I found your channel. forward to your trip to Quebec, fingers crossed 🤞 you make it on the Trans Taiga or maybe all the way up to Caniapiscau ‼️
V is for Venture. Now ya know!! You’re welcome!

Hey Chris, if you want to get that front driveshaft tuned up before you head into Canuckistan, my driveshaft shop is in Portland. Looks like your a bit further up the coast currently. But if you were traveling through anyway…
Cole attending Eastern Michigan? K.O.A.R up in the UP of Michigan would be a perfect stop for you guys.
Sounds like the track bar to me but there’s a lot of joints in a jk front end. My wife’s jeep was making that noise and it was the track bar bolt on the axle end.
I would check the passenger front axle u-joint for play. Maybe it is binding a bit then releasing.
Great video thank you!
My first guess is axle’s U joint and my second guess is ball joint. Glad to see you are getting better and hopefully we’ll meet out on the road.
Yep I was thinking u-joints. Be good to go through those anyways because that is the weakest link in the front axle. I switched to RCV's to avoid the inevitable failure.

I’m not a fan of cities, but Quebec City is worth checking out.
Sorry that I missed you while you were in Maine. I could have showed you a few good spots. Maybe next time.
Great video

The front left u joint between stub shaft and axle shaft. Will usually pop under load and steering esp when a needle is going bad.
FIXED. Had exact same popping/cracking noise coming from my 2020 Gladiator 1 year after I bought it. It was fixed by dealer. Repair invoice stated “install new inner shaft, bearing, bushing and outer shaft as per star case”. No problems since then! Hope this helps.
Dude you're in my backyard!!
When you said it easily reproduced when the locker is on, that sound makes me wonder if the splines of one of the front axels are slipping in the carrier????
Hey Chris. Check the joints axles. I think your problem could be there.. also check the play between the axles and th the differential. Good luck and big hug..
Sheesh! How many ticks do you pick up in those shaggy forests out there?
Sounds like a worn bushing... Are those original control arms?? Safe travels Perry
Disconnect your sway bar and see if it happens. I had end links once that looked totally fine, but we’re slightly lose and sounded exactly like that
Check the sway-bar end links.
You guys have to go up to Lubec and the West Quoddy State Park! Campobello Island! Just a couple hours north! There is also an amazing pizza place in town!

Since I hear it at full turn, I'd be looking at those U-Joints on the axles. In fact, I'd just replace them.

I’m thinking that noise is coming from a half shaft U joint in the front axle. Going to need a 13mm 12 pt
It's the servo unit in your flux capacitor.
Sounds more like a bearing than a bushing to my ear
sounds like an axle u-joint to me
It’s ur front Differential my friend…
Professor Dan
You better take care of that woman!
Wondering if your spring is seated properly? Sounds a little springy. If you watch your spring, it moves ever so slightly.
Maybe mic on extension attached to spots. Or mechanic style solid rod stethoscope tied to spots.ight get you closer by following vibration. It sounds very hard bouncy not good long term.
Yay!
My front end is doing the same thing, but I haven’t had time to really investigate…
We are moving to Freeport me in November
I had loose threads in my adjustable track bar and they would pop as they rode over each other. I didn't know what it was until the end completely came out of the shaft.

No it’s because they don’t want Americans coming across the border and possibly taking jobs away from Canadians, just like the Americans do to Canadians.
Great adventure boot! Any boot sponsors? hh
For that kind of noise the best is to go by touch... not only by ears.. Touch the front bar who control the wheel im pretty sure your issue is there
I think I saw you at a campground in Munising MI one summer. Just your van actually.
Is there anyway you can feel around for vibrations when the pop occurs, placing your hand on different components as someone turns the wheel. It sounds like a healthy pop, something that might cause a vibration.
"V" was originally for "Volume", as in a collection.
You're now in Volume 17, moving to Volume 18 next time.
Volume 18 ... that's 8 louder. 😀
My money is on the ball joints.
Have you changed out all you bushings in the front end .
Have you checked your four wheel drive actuator’s? Are they electronically actuated or do they use vacuum to function?
I hope my leg don't break... walking... walking on the moon.
Popping might be lower control arms. Bushings May be worn.
Were you in Quebec? I saw a Jeep looking exactly like yours near Montreal.
👍👍👍👍👍
its got to be in the steering given how easy it seems to be to replicate when you turn right to steering lock
