I just found out last night, watching a video of Melissa recalling some of her early hits, that she and Carole submitted this to Dionne Warwick, hoping Warwick would record it. But it never got to Warwick because Warwick's producer was impressed with the singer on the demo (Manchester), so he ended up producing this for Manchester.

It's amazing she didn't have many more big hits. I remember shorty after this song came out, there was a novelty song called Mr.Jaws that used her line from this song "wouldn't you give your hand to a friend". Good to have you back Gordon!
