Problem is you can't get much match play when you go out in the first round. And the lower her ranking the higher the rank she'll be facing in the first round, therefore the more likely she'll get knocked out. I'm sorry but it's practice and hard work that move you up, match play is not where you develop, it's where you show what you've developed.
She'll be back. She just needs more matches. Osaka looks good after 15 months off
Naomi actually looked really good for just having come back. Garcia was a tough draw for a first round match.
Tough draw for Osaka with such little match play. But she's already able to hang with top 20 players. Not a bad sign.
Hopefully Caroline can regain her 2022 form with this impressive win... and Naomi can definitely return to the top10 with consistent match play. Tough draw!

Great win for Garcia … good for the rest of the women that she took out Osaka early. Osaka needed a good run of matches to rev up. If she had made it to the second week, I’d say she’d be a dangerous threat for the title. So taking out the 2-time AO champ early before she could really get into her groove was crucial.

Osaka needs better conditioning and preparation. There was very little pop in her ground strokes and Garcia was taking advantage of it.
Im actually impressed with Naomi Osaka. She had over 12 months away from tournaments and already looking good. She just had a tough opponent in the first round. Playing Garcia first round would not be easy for anyone.

The game has past her even before her hiatus. I’ll be surprised if she ever contends again. She started playing the victim despite all her success when she wasn’t winning as much so she’s in for some serious dose of reality when it comes to her mental health.
Naomi did well ,she just needs more matches plus she needs to improve her movement and her defensive game. Before her long break i started noticing that her return game was lagging behind .Today she did not create not even a single break chance. She needs better coaching on how to handle big servers like herself plus at times she needs patience instead of pulling the trigger too early which results in too many unforced errors.
Damn, Caroline Garcia's beauty is so underrated.

Naomi's return showed some positive signs. In order for her to climp up the rankings, she will need new weapons such as more lethal strokes and a variety in her games. This is really competitive sport!

Naomi getting some tough practice in. However it should sharpen her up as the season goes along.
Was hoping for a 3rd set but Garcia serve was on point. So glad Naomi is back, and she will definitely improve, but sadly, she will not win another Slam. You have to be hungry to win and she is not starving.
Naomi at this point is maybe Top 80 level, not a rusty Top 30 as many expected.
A nightmare 1st round matchup for Osaka. Garcia is a first strike player who wouldn’t allow Osaka to get into a rhythm where she could get her feet set to dominate rallies.

Osaka wasn’t in her right set of mind even before she got pregnant and then had her baby and now hear this: It will take her a long long time to come back to the level the ladies are in right now. She may not recover from it and might consequently never get to win a grand slam again…. That’s my opinion though I hope she does come back stronger.

Osaka’s form seems fine considering the early stage she’s at with her comeback - probably would’ve been good enough to win against 80% of the other first round players but she just happened to come up against a Caroline Garcia in top form…that’s the random luck of being unseeded. Pretty sure she’ll be top 20 again before long and things seem to be moving in the right direction.

Naomi looks really slow. She was fast, hungry and powerful in her prime. It’s very difficult to make a comeback as a woman’s tennis player or any professional athlete. Very few have done it successfully. The margin between professional athletes is very small. It’s just a step or two between the elite players. Mostly, I doubt she can regain her mojo mentally; I mean she lost it even before she went on hiatus. Time will tell, but I think she’s done.
She was definitely slow and looked as though she may still be carrying some pregnancy weight. A better choice for her future - maybe a few years off, have another baby, then fund a social advocacy foundation.

On the one hand, congratulations to Caroline Garcia.
On the other hand, lots of work to do for Naomi Osaka. She left the game when she had it in her palms and the world under her feet, pleading mental distress as her case, and decided to become a mother - congratulations to her.
But this is going to be a hard one to juggle. The historical data isn’t in her favor either (Serena, Vika, etc). Anything is possible though. We’ll see.

I didn't think this go well for Osaka. And it kinda weird. Normally. I watch Osaka match. She the one, eyes focus on. You know? You want see her wild ponytail. Her aggressiveness on return. But. I find eye mainly watch Garcia, as the favorite. Osaka not the best visually, out there. She have a way to go, come back and beat everyone. Garcia have lull, last year. She not gonna lose to former number 1, take a few year off, then underestimate everyone in WTA. Probably more of a 'test' for Garcia, cuz if you watch WTA, Garcia hands down favorite. Osaka, when she back, definitely a boost for pro tennis.

And if you think Osaka wasn't in her best shape coming into this year's AO, you do not understand being an athlete in the social media era. The incentives to be the best version of yourself before going out into the world are the highest they have ever been in the history of the world. That is why these players are now skipping tournaments and slams when they think even the littlest thing is amiss, even mental health. So when you see someone out there on the court competing, you best believe that is the average best version of themselves out there. Because their team is not going to let them compete in front of millions of fans and sponsors just to get double-bageled because they are out of shape.
Svitolina was the average best version of herself coming back from maternity leave, and in fact, I could argue she is the best version of herself ever in her career now because Svitolina came back with the best serve she has ever had. Same with Wozniacki. She waited until she was back to her best fitness level before she came back. And you can best believe Osaka was in her average best here as well. It's just that everyone else is also just as motivated because they want the prize money and positive social media engagement, which can lead to sponsorship deals like it has never been seen before.
