- How to install a trailer brake controller, trailer light adapter and a 7 pin trailer plug in a 2019+ Toyota Rav4. I installed these in my 2021 Toyota Rav4 Prime. Wiring is exactly the same as a 2019+ Toyota Rav4 Hybrid. It would be a little different for a non hybrid and non Prime Rav4.

I made a mistake.
At first I thought these brake controllers were detecting the amount of brake pressure applied by reading from an isolated CAN wire which is why you wired yours to the pedal but reading the manual for my Redarc suggests that they just need a brake light signal. In other words, simply tapping into the brake light vs. going through the whole process of wiring it to your brake pedal seems sufficient and will likely work properly with the vehicle's autonomous braking. The Redarc manual even states this:
"Sourcing the brake signal at the brake pedal may only detect braking events when
the brake pedal is depressed (and the switch activated) and not brake applications
activated by other on board systems such as AEB."
This was the first (only?) video I have found that shows how to find the reverse light wire and run it down to the receptacle. Our trailer has surge brakes and needs reverse wired in order to lock out the surge brakes when backing up. I did not cut a hole in the bumper for the round receptacle; instead I used a metal bracket with 4 small bolts to fasten it under the bumper, next to the hitch receiver.
Nice. I thought I saw you share the black box mount screw with the ground. I'm inclined to have seperate locations.
Awesome video!
Thank you for watching! Dont forget to hit that thumbs up for me. :)
Did you have trouble with that downward angle of the 7 wire connector when connecting your trailer? Do you feel like the bumper might crack around the hole over time, with vibration and with the weight of the harness? I bought the OEM hitch purely for its aesthetics vs third party one... but my dealership will only install a 4 wire harness. I think I'll do the install like you did. Oh, and thanks for your great videos.
Do you know how to install the sway control for 3,500lbs trailer on 2021 AWD RAV4?
All those loose wires in the back need to be wrapped or run in wire loom, or short circuits will start occurring a few years down the road due to rubbing on metal.
Love your videos, but the wife must be jealous... 🤣 ❤️
Jealous of what?
Would this work for a 2022 RAV4 HYBRID?
Did you use an adapter for the 4pin Tekonsha to hook up to the 7pin plug?
Yes I use this one. amzn.to/2Q8jI0h
Sorry, i meant from the harness on the tow vehicle to the 7pin port. The Tekonsha has a 4 pin plug, i'm a novice and i just want to make sure i get this right. 20' Rav4 Hybrid here
@@kseab14 I dont understand. The Tekonsha is wired to my 7 pin.
@@JamesKlafehn Exactly, the Tekonsha has a 4pin connector for a standard setup. In the video I didn't see any mention of your method of conversion for the wiring from the 4pin connector to your 7pin plug. The link above isn't that either, I'm confused as well
@@kseab14 I cut off the 4 pin connector and connected the 4 wires to the 7 pin connector along with reverse lights, power brake wire, and 12v power. Id have to rewatch the video but I am pretty sure I showed myself connecting and mounting the 7 pin plug.
Hi how can you make the room mode work?
I talk about it here. ruclips.net/video/kIB8rxaNbWk/видео.html
Have you read the manual? You have to be charging.
Does the Rav4 need a brake controller and trailer with brakes to tow a 2500 lb trailer?
It depends on your local regulations. Here in NY any trailer that weighs more than 1000 lbs empty or over 3000lbs full requires brakes. Its a safety thing.
@@JamesKlafehn I wonder if you can tow even more with the brakes. Alex on autos towed 2000 lbs on his regular rav4 hybrid up big mountains and everything. Makes me wonder if the rav4 prime can tow a bit more
@@deele7991 I am a firm believer that you can tow a bit over their rating. Manufacturers are always very cautious about everything.
Trailers of any size can benefit from having brakes, simply from a control perspective; there's really no other way to quickly and safely pull out of a sudden sway condition. A relatively small trailer can push even a relatively large tow vehicle around, the leverage that tongue provides works both ways.
@@deele7991those low tow capacities are an american thing. The 2020 Rav 4 hybrid, anywhere in the world has a towing capacity of 1650 kg. That’s 3637.627 lbs. Compare that to the 1750 lbs in the states.
