Thank you so much for this video. I am 78 year old accountant. My husband was a master carpenter, but cannot help or teach me anymore. My chimney flashing has declared war on me. This was PERFECT instruction for me.
Well done Dave. Amazing work for finding out the leak cause and fixing it. Just don't cut yourself with chainsaw cutting too close to your limbs. That slip was terrifying.
ex tower climber here - your anchor point for your fall protection was sub-par at best. the anchor point needs to be able to handle 5k lbs of shock force and thar iron you choose will not do that. im glad you didnt really need to use the fall areest, but next time choose a more stout anchor point or you'll just fall to the ground with a harness on.
You can use the pythagorean therium when installing a cricket as well unless you have to flip the board. Measure all three lengths on lengths on a plumb line. Mark with a pencil with a half moon on your plywood to find the beveled edge where your measurements intersect. I like the bevel though I will have to add one to my tool collection
At around 11:30 couldn't you have replaced your red level with the 2×4 and used another 2×4 to make the angle cuts? Also how did you find the bevel angle again?
I have never had a remodel cricket, dormer, or hip-and-valley roof come out with symmetrical angles and measurements. They’re always just slightly off like that. It’s the nature of wood framing, especially working on something that’s had years to settle. Reminds me of a RUclipsr who pulled on a bowed garage wall with a rope and a truck one time. Turns out buildings are a lot more flexible than we expect 😉
The only thing that bothers me is using your leg to hold the wood while you cut. Its a quick way to cut the major muscle in the top of your thigh and that's a huge medical expense sewing that all back up. I seen a guy that happened to, it wasn't pretty. But other than that, good job and thanks for the tips. We have to build a cricket to stop the water from soaking into the brick mortar and turning our fireplace into a humidifier. Good job on the harness also!!
Good question. It's called a sliding bevel, Justin. Thank you for the kind comment, Karen! All the best on your project.
Thanks so much for this video. I have the same issue and this was an answer to prayer after trying to hire so many people who never showed.
I hope everything goes well for you!
Excellent explanation on how to cut everything!! Awesome job.. will look for part 2
I've been roofing for over 10years. This is exactly how i would have done it to. Good job 👏 👍
Thanks Hector!
Was impressed to see you set up fall protection good job man doin it right

A very honest video; thanks for sharing.
Exactly what I’ve been thinking of doing.
Much appreciated Daniel!

Good to know. I was really scratching my head on that one. ... Hope y'all have a merry Christmas!
Nice job! Noticed that you weren't tied off when you slipped, just a note for pros, we had a sub get a $25k fine for each man not tied off
Great job on the angles!
Thanks Chris!
I think I would have peeled the underlayment back to see if I could find the leak just for curiosity. So, did the cricket solve the leak?
👍Yes. The leak hasn't returned :-).
You should put part 2 in the description
Done. Thanks for the advice, Joel :-)
Is top board level?
I watched video 2, and no the flat bar is not in there when you threw the plywood on
Haha, thanks! I don't remember this well, but I must have found it later, because I've been using it since :-)

Thanks for your concern, Wanie, and the kind comment. I’ll try to be more careful 🙂

U left out the explanations. Why do you go 3 inches down?
What tool are you using to che k the angle

It would of been easier and cheaper to make a sheet metal saddle with a 6” cricket for a $100 dollars.
Do you have a video for that?
Nice work
Thanks
Whole time the joints in the chimney .
Nice looking good 👍
Thanks 👍
Man you could have mortared those holes and been done in 20 min.
Yes you don’t need a cricket When it’s a small.
@@openyoureyes3113 this is wider than 30 inches which usually requires a cricket by modern standards
@@jerryjenkins6071 I agree, whenever I meet a chimeny wider than 24 inches I do frame it.
The water is leaking through the mortar. Chimneys that dont get sealed over time will wick water through the grout. Just my opinion not an expert
A rope and harness for a little 7/12 pitch?!..... c'mon son!! 😑🤦🏽♂️
