I love your channel. I’m only 1 year into roofing but I can tell I’m gonna be watching a lot of your content. Thank you for the knowledge
This is a good series on the chimney. I watched it last year.
Can't wait for the next episode 👍👍👍👍
Hoping to get to them soon. Need to work them in but video card is mining ethereum.
Book, ladder, stair step, all the same thing. In my area they banned that method, probably because of wind. Nailed that tear off in a jiffy. Or is that denailed, unnailed, pulled. Pro job as always.
Nice job from somebody who has done a few
I wonder if a magnet attached to a small bean bag would help make it easier to collect your nails when tearing down a job like this.
Like there used to be ashtrays that were built around sandbag bases so they never got spilled by the drunks.
The sandbag would stay put while the magnet sucked up all the little nails around it.
Some guys will precut a bunch of their 1st shingles that start each row in the recommended 6” offset, so first shingle being full, next 6” shorter, then 12” shorter, 18”, until your down to a 12” and cant go any shorter. Then they put them together in order and call it a book. Not sure where this started or why but im guessing cuz its sorted like pages in a book? Even tho book pages dont gradually get shorter…
That's really super.
Love seeing the full length vid
Thanks! The 3rd and 4th are longer. Taking time to to get to them, my video card is busy mining ethereum.
@@GrandRoofingInc haha nicee
@@misarockzxbox been investing in digital assets pretty heavy this year. Easier to inverts than run a roofing business. Less risk and higher rewards.
thoroughly enjoyed your videos and some of the great tricks you shared... thank you
U ever worry about stepping on a nail in your workspace? Btw, helpful video, need some flashing done around my chimney as well. Thanks...
Damn u! I wanted to see the end!!!!
I'ma chimney mason in MA,we use lead to flash a chimney.
New sub right here!
Nice job 👍 when can be part 2 for finish that chimney roof?
Keep up the good job. 👍
I thought it was supposed to be step flashing with counter flashing over top, what I see you removing is Step flashing someone used for counter flashing and step flashing which is a big No-No keep up the good work brother
Would it of been possible to reuse the old shingles? I'm a carpenter, not a Pro Roofer like you. If the cut shingles were marked on the back to keep track of? The full shingles that were removed doesn't matter I guess. If any new shingles needed to be added, only cut ones into and around the chimney? Just curious of your opinion. Very nice explaining and craftsmanship.
Always use new shingles so they seal properly
Custom, correctly sized chimney cap would go a long way preventing leaks caused by shoddy flashing
Don't cut yourself lol be safe out there man haha
🍿 immediately hit the comments section 😁
If I’m rebuilding a block chimney that goes through the roof, can I do this without removing shingles and use the old roof flashing, but use new counter flashing?
The block that comes through the roof will be replaced plus another 6 blocks above it. They want to keep the existing roof without buying new shingles.
Thank You!
I need a video on this!
Love the video how much would this flashing job go for?
Always doing a great job buddy, can’t wait to see next episode. I’m watching you from Indianapolis In, I heard that you are in Kokomo In ?
Yes Kokomo just 45 minutes north of you. What part of Indy are you in? We have a few more jobs coming up in Indy.
South Indy near beach grove
@@saul3591 are you a contractor or roofer?
Well we have our own business as a renovations- remodeling but roofing is something that we don’t do
@@saul3591 do you have a channel?
Is it supposed to peel off the clear plastic strip underneath the shingles? So that the shingles can adhesive to another. How can I trust the contractor to do the right job any more?
No the little cellophane strips are not supposed to be peeled off. Different manufacturers install them in different areas. The point of the cellophane strip is so during shipping and warehousing them while in the package they do not stick together. The shingles are oriented in such a way the seal strip is covered by the cellophane strip on the opposing shingle. When they grab a shingle off the stack it should reveal a ready to go seal strip. The only time you need to remove them is if it releases and sticks to the seal strip.
@@GrandRoofingInc thanks for the reply. I understand that the strips' purpose is to prevent shingles stick together before installation. How about after the installation? I think the strips should be removed during installation , so that shingles can adhesive to each other to prevent wind damages.
@@GrandRoofingInc I watched the video again. The cellophane strip is running along the center line of the shingles where you put the nails. That is exactly where the glue strip is . That tells me that the cellophane strip shouldn't be there and should be removed.
Off topic but have you come across a chimney (such as this, on the side of house) being knocked down to below the gutter line and closed off with a crown ?
Reason I'm asking. We have a high efficiency furnace and only vent the water heater thru the chimney now. However, the chimney needs some repair (possible new flashing, rebuild top 6-8 rows, new crown, new liner) and it's sorta expensive. We are trying to decide if it's just better to get rid of the chimney, get a new water heater which vents thru the side of the house wall just like the furnace does.
A roofer would close off the section where the chimney was (wood decking, shingles, connect the gutter).
Mostly wondering how it'd look afterwards, because the chimney is on the side of the house, just as is in this video. And if you've seen that done in your experience, any thoughts. Thanks
Rebuild your chimney. I am doing exactly the same thing. I am into it two months now. Scaffolding, flue repair, and 10 rows of bricks. It is looking great. A nice chimney is nice.
I’ve heard of book
Why no half cricket at chimney top edge?
What was actually causing the leak?
One missed step can ruin a whole job. It looks like you’re going to fix them up right and I’m sure they will tell all their friends who to call and who to not.
I am also a fan of lead counter flashing. That tin is crap and a one trick pony. Lead forms and no tapcons needed. No caulk. Tuck with mortar.
Im surprised the osb isn’t worse!
I know, I thought it was going to be rotten near the chimney.
What's that hammer?
You might be talking about the mag hatchet by AJC
Why don’t you pick up the nails as you go? Especially on such a small job. I know you drag them closer as you went down the roof but you’re more than likely losing a few nails here and there.
Should the too section of drip edge go on top of chimney flashing?
No if I think I know what your talking about
No, if you do the water running that way will go down behind the edge metal and fascia. Better to go over the drip.
Grand Roofing Inc. thanks for the info!! Love your vids
What is it going underneath it? I didn't watch the whole video. Another aspect you. When you're 60 years old, and up on a roof with a 12-12 pitch kneeling down, how long do you take to do the job before you say fuck this I can't kneel down on this shit no longer? I'm just looking up beautiful it and existing flashing. And of course I'm the middleman, caught between the boss and the homeowner. What can be done what's done and what should be done and why it should have been done that way and nobody knows the answer except me. But nobody asks. So, in that case you grab the tape, flat white paint, spray, some silicone. Bingo. Got to make sure you guy don't get no water inside, and that's set. And the homeowner wasn't flat stuck to the chimney. Well the repairs are made underneath it it's impossible. And that's what he wanted in the first place. It's impossible in the means that I'm not spending 4 days on a simple flashing job and my job was just to point the brick. And this is what happens. The boss wants to take the old flashing off and reuse it? Okay no problem. But it was stuck with some type of blue, that had no earthly means being even on this planet, it held so well, that it was all I could do is just not to shred the the existing aluminum haha, let alone put a slight crease in it. How do I know it's going to be waterproof? Because it was waterproof when I got here. It's even better now. If you want better waterproofing stick saran wrap all over it, and in about 3 or 4 years you'll have nothing there except a small pile of sand. Enjoy your work day.
Thanks for the info! Had similar feelings of motion sickness that those crazy cyclists on the mountain ridges have with their videos. Wonder if you can get a stand for your go-pro…
Would you ever consider putting a new metal roof on in West Virginia?
West Virginia is a bit far, sorry.
How much did you charge for that repair?????
Honestly i do a lot of trades and different jobs and dont know the lingo or proper terminology lol ahh well… talk is cheap - i let my work quality speak for me
like the video just wear gloves
Jesus, that camera angle scares the crap out of me, I keep thinking you’re going to roll right off the roof.
I'm compelled by internet law to insult you and, talk trash about your work. Although I'll present ZERO of my own superior ways of doing things ( you'll just have to trust me) I will continue to insult you and call you a "hack"... You see, only MY way of roofing is correct. Everyone ( including you) is wrong. You're supposed to be doing things my way... it's the only way.
Knee pads
Seriously. No gloves. That’s just weird.
Freaking Chimneys, no one uses them anymore.
Put some gloves on.
Wow you must've had a slow week.
The flashing was perfect.
They just didn't fill the break with enough mortar.
I can't believe you did all of that.
All it took was a little love to the mortsr joints.
Wood would've changed in color if it was in consistent contact.
You should be ashamed of yourself.
Rookie mistake but wow , what a crime on that customer
Did you not see how much the step flashing was pitched up making water run laterally into the shingles? Or how there’s no counter flashing covering the step flashing?
