I wrote to Kitty about 10 years ago ,requesting her to sign the sheet music of little things. To my surprise 2 weeks later the phone rang at 9.15PM UK time and believe it, it was Kitty Kallen, she was so thrilled with my letter ,and asked where I had got the sheet music . After about 20minutes talking she said she would sign the sheet music and also send her new doulbe album signed ,and a 8" x 10" signed photo with her usual lipstick kiss on it. 3 weeks later recieved all the item she promised all signed and with her famour lipstick kiss. What a wonderful lady ,sadly missed RIP
I only discovered her quite recently. I love her music and am surprised it wasn't more popular here in the UK. She had a beautiful voice, enchantingly. It saddens me that the stuff we hear today is called singing, when compared to Kitty's era, todays music sounds terrible. RIP Kitty.
I barely remember watching this Perry Como television show with my family all together, with us kids sitting on the floor with pillows! Makes me want to cry. Hard to hold back the waterworks,,,, sorry............!
She was a star in the 1930s as she appeared on "The Children's Hour" radio show as a young teen...sang with Artie Shaw, Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey Orch. ...Bob Eberly & Kitty...1944's Besame Mucho... etc
I met KItty Kallen in person while she was shopping in the Interior Decorating Company I worked for back in the 1990s. I had remembered back in the 1960s she recorded a Song famous The Coloring Book Song and we talked about it. I assisted her and she was with her male friend and she even called me on the phone at work when she got home. Unfortunately, my boss was over my shoulder when on the phone but we talked as much as possible about her show biz career and she was down to earth. I should of asked her to coffee and cake somewhere and she probably would have said yes. She was very social and down to earth person. I think she retired in Mexico and I believe she died there too. I still love The Coloring Book song to this day!
Always have loved Kitty's voice- great to see her here performing her biggest hit (nine weeks at #1 according to Billboard, making it the top hit of 1954).
A fifties classic ! I fed the jukeboxes mucho dinero listening to this one. Joni James, too. Had a slew of truly great girl singers back then. Jo Stafford ...........
The song was intended for Joni James but the writers could not get through M-G-M Records to give it to her. So they brought it to Decca and Kitty Kallen. When Kitty's record came out Joni was urged to do a cover version but she refused saying that every song she'd recorded had been covered by other singers and she would not to do that to Kitty Kallen or any other singer. Five years later Joni recorded a rock-a-ballad version. Kitty Kallen was an exceptional artist, with a beautiful and distinctive voice, perfect pronunciation of lyrics and a great feeling for melody. She also was a striking beauty.
Wayne Brasler are you sure about that? My understanding is that Joni recorded it first for a small label and it went nowhere. That recording is available on RUclips.
And she was a good sport too . She was on the Colgate CoMedy Hour with Martin and Lewis , and Jerry caused her to take a pratfall , right on her rear end !
Great Post thank you so much! She grew up just a block from my family in the 30s during the transition of becoming a professional in her early teens! RIP Ms Kallen.
One of the greatest live singing performances of all time . Kitty Kallen is in the upper echelon of female singers with Joni James , Gogi Grant and of course the queen , Connie Francis . Pure singing from the heart , not any annoying whistling . [ Looking at you , Madonna and Mariah Carey ] .
Hello, Kitty Kallen, this a big thrill. Like her in high school. Last time I saw her was on Frank Sinatra Birthday celebration With man singers. Kitty looked great, hair completely gray and was beautiful 😍 ❤ 💖.
Lyrics: Blow me a kiss from across the room Say I look nice when I'm not Touch my hair as you pass my chair Little things mean a lot Give me your arm as we cross the street Call me at six on the dot A line a day when you're far away Little things mean a lot Don't have to buy me diamonds and pearls Champagne, sables, or such I never cared much for diamonds and pearls 'cause honestly, honey, they just cost money Give me a hand when I've lost the way Give me your shoulder to cry on Whether the day is bright or gray Give me your heart to rely on Send me the warmth of a secret smile To show me you haven't forgot For always and ever, now and forever Little things mean a lot ••beautiful song••

the nice thing about old music is that you know that what she is singing is her actual voice, not some manufactured robot voice produced in a studio

I like this style of music, it's relaxing. And Kitty was gorgeous.
I like this rendition better than the recorded version. It's slower and more relaxed. Kitty Kallen was a wonderful singer.

Finally, a video of Kitty Kallen singing her timeless classic! Thank you so much for this! I loved Kitty and I love this song!
Agreed with you there, between this and "It's Been a Long, Long Time" those were the two songs that she was best known for, and for good reason, too.
One of my all time favourites, No 1 in the UK for one week when I was 4 ! Timelessly romantic wonderful song .
I have heard Kitty Kallen sing this song many times and I think this is one of her best ever renditions. The intro with Perry Como was also amusing.

Touch my hair as you pass my chair

Give me your arm as we cross the street
