I met Lauren at a book signing in Liberty book store in Boca Raton in the early 90's, I was in line to get her to autograph my book but her publicist said she would only sign hard copies and I had the paperback one, I begged her to ask Lauren to please sign it and Lauren saw this and motioned for me to come up and she signed my book, she was such a doll, such a lovely lady and a great actress...💕💕
That's a sweet story. I was just thinking, why wouldn't the Johnny Carson show buy a hard copy and ask Lauren Bacall sign it?
@@bonniet5613 She was there to promote the printing of the paperback (cheaper) version. She had already made an appearance promoting the hardback earlier.
Great story by wonderful Lauren Bacall. She is si beautiful! Nice story with Johnny . . .
You are very lucky to have met her. She was my favourite actress.
@@bonniet5613because he had the paperback, that’s why!
"The only time I'll get you between the covers"- Only Johnny Carson! There will never be another like him. Same for Ms. Bacall. Great fun remembering.
There was only one Johnny and a witty one at that😊
Your lying she was a casting couch ehore
@@Legittoquit1
Why do you say that?
@ because she was nineteen when she broke up his family and he was 50 so she’s a casting couch ehore
@Legittoquit1
Maybe you know first hand?
His marriage to Mehot was stormy, with public fist fights and many separations. She was a alcoholic as was Bogart. Add mental and emotional issues to her drinking, and it wouldn't take much to end a marriage. Mehot's attempted suicide and public displays may have been exaggerated to make her look like the bad guy. Who knows what goes on?
Bacall was certainly extremely young and malleable.
Thank you for the nudge to get me to dig deeper. I didn't know much about any of them. And one can hardly trust Wikipedia 🫢
What a great interview ! Ms.Bacall was one of the greatest of the "golden"era of Hollywood. Great memories with her, and with Johnny (and Ed, all RIP).
I had lunch with Lauren, Margaret Hamilton and Myrna Loy. All were delightful. Miss Loy began as a pen pal when I was in 8th grade, later to have me to her home and putting me through cosmetology school and getting me set up in a nice salon. Bless that woman and what she did for me.
I wish Johnny would let Lauren finish a sentence, she doesn't need prompted to speak.
No ye didn't
What a great story!
I drove her around LA one bight and (after scolding me) she went on to tell stories of her and Boogie-as we "crawled" down Sunset Blvd.
boy are you a lucky person. best i got got stoned with andy warhol at CBGBs. lauren becall complete package they dont make em like that anymore
In all the World, Only Johnny Carson could get away with that lovely joke with Lauren; Absolutely Amazing, Precious Phenom Angels, both of them!!
Loving. Kindness. Worldwide:)

🐈⬛🐈⬛💛💛🐈⬛🐈⬛
Good lord, she was magnificent! Beautiful, smart, and eloquent. More class in her little finger than most.
Lauren was seen often on the upper Westside of Manhattan, mostly on Central Park West. She spoke with me near the bandshell in Central Park several times. Was kind enough to give me acting tips early in my career. Nice person.
What were her tips?
Manhattan is part of California now.
@@sky.the.infiniteyea, very curious ❤
How I miss Johnny Carson. When his show ended in 1992 I was so so sad. No other show since comes anywhere near as close to Johnny's
I miss those days 💔. Such a great generation - and the classy celebs they all were.
@@jimoffutt9156 at least on camera .. they were kinda ‘freaky’ too.
@@sherrydockery9933exactly. I guess, with all due respect, that we see them like that because they're far from us in time but certainly the custom was to keep all the 'dirt' well under the rug.
What can I say and agree with the first comment, it's that they had a unique elegance and style; that's long lost today.
Oh, Miss Lauren. How I ❤ thee! Those eyes, that voice. ❤ One of my all-time favorites.
What a classy dame.
couldn't have said it better myself
Bogie and Becall.match made in heaven
If you watch the movie "Key Largo" (1948), there's a particular scene where she's looking at Bogart in total adoration, in a way (to my mind) that seemed so genuine. They had already been married to each other for three years, and that look said so many things.
It's so delightful to revisit pure entertainment. Absolutely Love It ❤️
Betty Joan Persky, her birth name. Passed 2014 NYC just a month before her 90th Birthday. I've watched many of her films. "Mr. North" in 1988 was a real treat in her mature years. Carson had a really great line of fantastic talent on his set every night.
Cool! THANKS!
'Her mature years'?
Johnny Carson was the best of the best
@@luannelarson536 Irreplaceable.
"Bacall to Arms" is a cartoon starring her and Bogart.
She lights her cigarette with a blow torch!
Funniest cartoon I have ever seen!
My oh my, I can work for Mr. Benny now! 🤣🤣
It is hysterical especially as she walks and the carpet is burning behind her 🤣🤣
I saw her in 1987. She walked by me and up the stairs. Beautiful
The other thing i love about technology is being able to see such great actors & to hear them so youthful & see that they had a sense of humor & such. Loved John as well and I too would love to read his book😂
Watching these clips are so comforting. I was too young to stay up until 11:30 to see Mr. Carson.
I read her autobiography when it came out. An excellent read.
She lost almost everyone she loved.
She had elegance in her demeanor.
But at the same time, down to earth. She had a great sense of humor and liked to laugh have fun.
Yes, and grace. Like Jackie O. Such grace. Grace personified. Grace.
My mom named me after Lauren Bacall!! ❤️
This made me smile as I was named after the actress Linda Darnell but who isn't recognizable as much as your namesake!
The beautiful Bacall 😍
This was just before i was born 😆
The old world grace, proper manners and intelligence that is lacking in Hollywood today
💯💯
the world
People just aren't made like this anymore. Unfortunately.
YES
Marvelous interview.
It is a great book written by a fabulous woman. 😊💜
They really don’t make them like the old Hollywood
Totally agree.
So True
One of the most memorable moments in my life was the night I drove her to Paramount Studio to shoot a commercial then to her friend Roddy McDowall's house then as we "crawled" down Sunset Blvd in traffic and she watched the less-than-classy girls strolling about she began to tell me about what "The Strip" was like when she, "and Humphrey Bogart used to stroll along here." I SO wish I had a tape recorded with me (before cell phones) . It was priceless and Wonderful....Fan of Johnny's (also) but I wish he would have let her speak more.
So what did she say? What was the strip like in her day?!
@@mrsx7944 Basically in a word: CLASSY. She was flabbergasted and upset to see (some of) the girls walking around in "Madonna-like" outfits. She spoke about how she, Bogie and everyone else had class, style and respect-for themselves and others. ..and "Would never dare even go out of the house looking trashy."
She s not very chatty at all, anyway.
What a woman! And to think she was five years older than my mother.
As part of the public-relations push (for the film To Have and Have Not), Bacall visited the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on February 10, 1945, and sat on a piano as Vice President Harry S. Truman played it.[32][33]
Truman became President two months later on April 12, 1945.
She was an extraordinary woman by every measure.
Enjoyed! Bacall was straight forward.
Not exactly. She swore she never had plastic surgery, but if you compare this clip on the Tonight show, with interviews about 20 years later -- all of a sudden she has EYELIDS.
I'm loving Johnny's suit jacket here.
Bacall= Class!!!
It’s a shame, Women today think that “ Sexy” means having everything nipped and tucked..not realizing that it’s confidence and intelligence and the way you carry yourself that makes you so attractive. ❤❤Here’s to all those strong women who knew the secret!❤❤
I still have her book. It's very genuine in how she tells her story. This interview was entertaining. She is definitely flirting with Johnny. As she says, she likes the fellas!
My mother was more soft spoken but had a regal air much like Lauren Bacall. She was equally as beautiful. I miss her every day.
I’m just putting it out there: when they make a biopic of Lauren Bacall, they need to cast Allison Janney!
Good choice.
Good call.
She had natural cat eyes!
Meow 😻 🐈
And fabulous hair.
Saw her at LAX one time and as she walked by, people just parted and watched her pass. She had command presence.
She was doing a book signing, and of all the people that were there ,Paris Hilton showed up to get a copy of the book,as she got up to miss Bacall ,she said that she had written a book also, without missing a beat Miss Bacall said ,that's nice ,what color crayon did you use !!!!
Is that true?
Interesting that he calls her Betty (her given name) throughout the interview.
On an appearance on Merv Griffin's show, he told Bacall that she's the only star he knows who never goes by her stage name off stage, and that everybody, including him, calls her Betty. And she agreed, saying that "Lauren" didn't suit her.
All her friends did
I personally never went crazy for Bacall's looks but there was something about her that pulled you in every time. I think she had a look but I would not consider her beautiful. Her film debut was so well received you knew she was going places, as they say, and her match-up with Bogey was one made in heaven...for both, I think. When he whistled in "To Have and Have Not" I knew it was not only scripted...it was real and said so much more than a "Wolf's Whistle." She could and did it all...Drama, Comedy, Musicals...the works and she left her mark on the firmament.
She was a beautiful woman, but yeah I get what you mean. Her VOICE is what made her stand out.
I think she was stunningly beautiful. But I appreciate what you are saying.
@@damienabsalonThat's for sure! Her voice could stop you in your tracks!
I agree, she was not very attractive
She had a confidence in her presence and mannerisms. Her beauty is not a traditional or classic beauty. It is a type of beauty that is in motion, in her movement, speech and timing. It causes you to stop, stare and be in awe. Bogart was the same as her male counterpart.
Bogie made the lights flicker
Sharp as whip and a wonderful, wonderful writer - it's a pleasure to hear talk b/c she had intelligence, insight, wisdom and was a straight shooter and honest - if onlyt carson had let her speak, we would have had more of it.
Intelligent, good-looking, and talented. R.I.P.
Great actor
Please she is an Actress.
@@susanb2015❤
@susanb2015
"Politically correct" to call all actors, m and f, actor. (?)
Not sure why this came in but seems the usual way to describe now. (I feel it's an elevation).
But are waitresses called waiters now? ❤❤
Carol I know why it came to be but it is going to be gone along with all of the other crap with Mr. Trump in office.
@@FarFromN0thing She was an Actress.
"Everyone has a story to tell and I would like to know yours, John." Lauren Bacall was awesome and still is.
This is when Hollywood was Hollywood
I was a growing embryo when this aired, maybe my parents watched this episode
Her gaze absolutely smolders and men get weak in the knees and tongue-tied when she turns those eyes to them. She really got to Alan Ludden on password and it was so funny!
She’s utterly pulse poundingly gorgeous xxxx 😍😍😍😍🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️
Don’t totally agree- but each to their own I guess. She sounds lk a chain smoker.🤔
One of my favorite YT channels 🙌🏻 I’m gonna go find her book now
I though the same thing! The only thing Johnny didn't do was say the name of the book. But I want to read it now too.
SHE said th title of th book.@@longfield0023
It's really good! It's entitled "By Myself".
I've read ut several times. It's a good read.
"By Myself" is a fascinating autobiography as is her 1994 follow up book "Now."
What a great voice she had
The director who discovered her supposedly made her read the phone book until her voice got hoarse and husky. Supposedly
She did the voice of one of the witches in "Howe's moving Castle" anime film
Yep! That's how I always remember her, much like I know Suzanne Pleshette as Yubaba ❤
Low voice from years of heavy smoking.
light flicker at 13:38 LOL
I remember reading "By Myself."
She mentioned watching Casablanca, her companions were all smitten with Bogart and she didn't think he was that handsome.
A few years later she did "To Have and Have Not" with him and they got married.
She is rather pretty in the plain Jane kind of way.
I'm almost finished with her 1978 Autobiography, "By Myself". She wrote a very moving portion on the death of Humphry Bogart dying, and its impact on her and her children. Elizabeth Kubler Ross on "death & dying" in 1970.
Her marrying Jason Robards who was a drunk at the time, ended up a disaster.
She wasn’t plain
Lauren was the sexiest most gorgeous actress of the 1940’s. By 1950 when she was only about 26 she looked 40. I still loved her to bits.
ms bacall sexy talented gave the rat pack there name and boggie her man who needs anything more a hat trick
I was thrilled to see her cameo on "The Sopranos."
Wonderful! Just wonderful!
I hated school too and always tried to find away to get out.
LOVE her voice
Bacall was one classy dame. She was one of those celebrities who had the perfect combination of glamour and street smarts or sensibility. She had that kind of knockout beauty that was very feminine but not fragile. I nice Jewish girl from the Bronx who was no pushover.
In New York we would say she was one classy broad... and she was.
She had such a great personality and was such a fantastic Actress. She is missed.
Lauren Bacall passed away in 2014 - she would be 100 years old this year. Is this why RUclips sent this video clip to me ?..
❤THAT'S THE ❤ NICE ❤ VERY CLASSY LADY, ☆M☆A☆G☆A☆WITH CLASS ❤☆☆☆☆☆❤.
Actress Eve Saint Marie DID turn 100 years old this past year (2024), on July 4th!
Her voice❤❤❤
Bring back classy movie stars.
Not ones who walk up on stage and slap the person up there. Hollywood has been ghettoized.
Ed McMahon was a great side kick loved them both
Old School Hollywood. Classy woman! Bogie was a lucky man!
Rich people can afford to be nice nice without stressing out.
I miss the tonight show and old hollywood.
She looks just like my grandmother. My grandmother was a beautiful woman. So was my mother.
I agree with Ed "some Lady!" She would have been 100 years old this year, and been gone for 10. There will never be another Lauren Bacall.
What a class act. A hottie, even as an older woman.
Who didn’t like Lauren Bacall. Johnny for to mention the title: Lauren Bacall by myself. It was a good read. She was really hurt by Frank Sinatra.
John got to interview Lauren ...isn't that something ehh 😊
Several times.
These two are flirting!
Oh, yes - Johnny could not resist an attractive woman
She was nearly 60 here and still beautiful. No work done on peoples faces those days, or rarely.
She's just so charming.
I adored her! She and Bogart were intellectually gifted people and very liberal especially for the period they were married! She was Jewish btw! Her mom’s maiden name was Bacall. Betty was her real name and they had a pretty good marriage. He was not a womanizer despite being so attractive!
Bogart was not a "specimen" in the looks department.
@ matter of opinion he was considered a major sex symbol
I miss the days of classy late night TV with innuendo that was unspoken.
Now I need to read her book if I can find it.
They didn't tell the sordid details that get paraded about today.
These days they " lead " with them on TV and internet.
Some things should be left unsaid.
Lauren was always my favorite actress!!? Personally!!??
I understand I Miss those days too
It’s a shame the quality of these wonderful clips is not better. They’re historical artifacts!
HER VOICE WOW
The correct date is January 11, 1980.
I've seen key large and as a matter of fact I have the box set of all 4 movies they made together
Amazing couple.
I gotta read 📚 this book 📖 appreciate reminder 😅
A Lauren Bacall bookmark, now how neat is that?
That era had bogart now we have Dwane the rock Johnson…unreal
I know, right?? 😅
And we have "stars" who in full public view, at the supposedly most glamorous occasion in the industry, walk up on stage to assault a fellow professional. Hollywood has been ghettoized.
What an amazing woman and her personality!!??
She had a pet Crow. When she would get home in the evening the crow would call out,, Lauren Bacaw!!! Lauren Bacaw!!!
Carson never wrote a book because his adult personal life was a mess and he knew it. Plus his 3 ex wives would have sued him...again.
Not everyone cares to write one. Usually a money grab. Carson was always set.
The Big Sleep she did with Bogart I think that is the best movie ever made Bogart is in every scene The great thing about Bogart being Marlowe in the movie is you the viewer know exactly what he knows you are solving it right along with him no twists and turns that change the story It is the same thing when he plays Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon The same clues he is learning you are too
She certainly helps to understand Hollywood!
Why would someone who is balanced and healthy ever want or dream of being someone else?
Hollywood is a magnet for broken people and evil opportunities.
Fabulous fabulous interview l love these too! I will write ! I’m inspired!
It’s interesting to read the between the lines when Carson had an independent woman on his show and how he had an uncomfortable time handling that.
I was on the Tonight Show on March 13, 1986 and am trying to find a copy of that show. Can someone let me know if I can obtain a copy of that show. Jane Curtain, magician Jay Johnstone & Jason Bateman appeared on that program.
You were in the audience, or sitting on Johnny's couch?
5:14 😂
To bad she couldn't have played with him in casablanca but Ingrid Bergman was fantastic.one of the beautiful woman in the golden age of hollywood
Here's looking at u kid.of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she had to walk into this one.play it again Sam for old time sake.
She is spectacularly interesting and he repeatedly interrupts her. Why? She's answering questions he's asking and he won't even let her finish before he asks another question. Is he starstruck by her? What is going on here?
They got marrid at Bromfield's farm about 6 miles from my hpme.State renamed it Malabar farm They have tours and activities there
