      28:40 i don’t understand why the guy in the left was so confused by John’s reaction. It obv looked like the frontman had run out of bullets and John thought maybe he was in trouble because maybe the pink suit guys would turn around and kill him. He thought maybe not all of the pink suit guys would be able to recognize him. Pretty simple to understand. This guy on the left is kinda weird.

This is t I agree with the frontman his playing hero here, I mean without really no plan? Like does he even know where there are? Do they have enough guns to fight? Do they have enough people whos willing to fight knowing that those people hes with in the game are so greedy, especially hes plan contradict his moral to not killing each other when he decided to sacrifice his co x team... myghad

    My take is that 001 facilitated Gi-Hun’s rebellion just to show him that he would always fail. He spent the season questioning his morals and showing him the evil of human nature. He said it at the start of the season “You think you’re the hero”. The whole season has been him fucking with him, allowing him to make his way to the top just to kick him back down. He wants Gi-Hun to know that he failed. The games will continue until humanity itself changes.

      It never made sense that he the detective would have floated that far away from the Island and that the search radius would be so large.

    The motivation for Hyunju to join Gihun’s rebellion was losing her friend in the last game. Remember, she kicked out the shaman lady and the shy girl who was her friend didn’t make it to the room in time and was killed right in front of Hyunju. That shook her up, because before that incident, she voted O. She didn’t care about who died, they were strangers. But then someone she bonded with died.
    She was suddenly faced with the real weight and consequences of her choices. And the reality that while her friend was important to her, for the BitCoin guy, she was just an obstacle to his survival. Which was how she treated the shaman lady just moments ago (just an obstacle). So Hyunju didn’t just press X this time because she had enough money to cover her debts, but because she lost something greater than money: one of the few ppl in the world who treated her with humanity and kindness.
    Remember the conversation Gihun had with his friend when Jungbae asked why Gihun would come back after winning the money. Gihun said “what if you watched me die right in front of you”. The value of the money changes when someone you grow to care about is the cost. You might sacrifice millions of strangers for the money, but not one friend.
    That’s kind of a big premise for the show and it explains Hyunju’s motivations.

      Same for the son, he was taking it for granted that both him and his mom would survive. If that hadn’t happened I wonder if he would’ve still flipped to x

      i think saying "she didn't care about who died, they were strangers" is kind of a reach, yes she was selfish enough to vote O and continue the games, knowing that there would be sacrifices for it but she essentially still helped people during the games, especially at the first round with the guy who was shot on the leg since it didn't have any beneficial for her to help the guy.

    All men go through military training because Korea has a conscription system. So it's not a strange thing to use a gun well. The South Korean Marines are different from the U.S. Marines. The Korean Marines can go without difficulty if men who have to go to the army apply, and it's only a little harder than the regular army, but it's not much different. You shouldn't think of it as very strong as the U.S. Marine Corps.
    However, former Korean Marines are as proud as the U.S. Marine Corps and carry out special operations

    • @chase5436
      @chase5436 18 дней назад +24

      Well, it's not really that much different in the US. US marines are proud and boast too, which is probably why you think they're more special than they are. Their training is nowhere near as difficult as special forces training. Seems common among "marines."

      You're wrong.
      The Korean Marines have a high application rate, so they have to take a separate exam and
      and even if you pass, you have to go through a hell of a training program to get selected. They call it hell week. If you look on RUclips, there is a documentary on the selection training of the Korean Marines.
      If you watch it, you will realize that not just anyone can become a Marine, so even if they don't know each other, when they get out of the Marine Corps, they salute each other like in a drama and pick senior and junior.
      The Korean Marines are a very strong military. They often train with the US Marines and have the same combat capabilities as them.
      So if you don't know, don't write.

      It's Part One syndrome. Audiences will always be left unsatisfied by an incomplete story, and will usually change their minds when Part Two releases.
      This doesn't happen if it's done REALLY WELL, like with Infinity War, where the first half still felt like a complete movie. I think people are hating not because this episode was bad but because it feels like the midpoint was... a midpoint. Not a bad thing it just happens to lead to Part One syndrome. Producers don't worry about this too much if they trust that Part Two wins people back, which it seems like it will (the direction they're taking the show seems genuinely unique and not generic).

    the reason the Frontman goes so hard to drive home his point to Gi-hoon is because they're really mirror of each other. they were both poor, had to play the games, won, but came out of the games with completely opposing ideals. if the game haunted Gi-hoon so much that he wanted to get back in to stop it, I imagine it's also still haunting the Frontman. so if he let Gi-hoon be right, that's gonna be flipping his whole world upside down. in fact you can see 001 having crisis of belief several times in the game.

    • @JuriAmari
      @JuriAmari 17 дней назад +5

      Yeah. I feel like we got hints of his pre-Squid Game self at times. There were points where it felt like an MLK/Malcolm X idea swap was gonna happen - Gi Hun was becoming more cynical of the world but Jung-Bae’s presence held him together (at least until the finale); and In-Ho seemed to have points where he’d forget he’s pretending to be a player until the games occur or Gi Hun’s in full rebellion mode. (Emphasis on seemed because it’s obvious he’s trying to get Gi-Hun’s optimism to crack)
      It really stood out to me with the GQ interview the lead actors and the creator did for a recap of season 1 and they pointed out that Gi Hun’s reactions are very childlike from the horse race win to watching a kid win a crane game on his behalf. That childlike nature almost disappeared if not for Il Nam’s final bet.

    I thought it was interesting how the battle played out exactly like a video game. Video games are still largely considered for children/teens, so it's like they were saying that even this was a part of the Squid Games.
    Children leave behind their simple games as they grow and exchange them for more complex ones. Here, by rebelling, they were taking the game to the next level. It seems to tie into one of the show's central thesis's - that the games we play as children, then teens, then young adults, they all train us to submit to society's Squid Game.

    Hello, I'm Korean. Kang Dae ho chose the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps in this movie is not a professional soldier, Korean men basically have to go to the army and can choose the army they want (Marine, Army, Air Force). So there is no such thing as a disgraceful discharge. He is just a Marine soldier who has been in the mandatory military for two years. So that's one of the reasons why most of the men in this movie know how to use guns. There might be a skittish guy like Kang Dae-ho because Korean guys know how to use guns, but they've never actually been to war. There's also speculation that this guy might not be a real Marine, but a spy. Because the scenario leads to misfortune because of this guy Also, there is an ambassador that Kang Dae-ho is the 1140th Marine Corps, and there was an 1140th shooting in Korea. That's why the man may have PTSD as the person who suffered the shooting. I'm sorry for my poor translation

Shared military suffering is a weird bonding thing for Korean males and also like a fraternity. They form connections, help each other get jobs after service, etc. in Korea they always ask you what unit you served in or what college you went to, because there’s a culture of favoritism and they treat their own better. So if a contractor was in your same unit, his business gets the job over a competitor. It’s not technically supposed to happen but it does. So without a record of service a male could find it very lonely in the business world. Even if he gets hired, others will get promoted over him.

      @ Korean men can be exempt from the military if they are seriously ill or for certain reasons. Then we can replace them with not going to the military at all or doing social work for two years. But in no case (a person who is sick or honoring a country), if a Korean man refuses to serve in the military, he will be imprisoned. Korea even made Korean dramas about soldiers who sneak out of the military. (Drama name: DP) So, emotionally, all Korean men go to the military in their early 20s. Most Korean men go to school until the first year of college, then take a leave of absence from the second year and go to the army. And one of the many reasons why we have Kang Dae-ho can be a spy is what you said. The drama didn't show us why he got involved in the game. It is also possible that this man hides his shame from not going to the army by lying that he went to the Marines instead. Because most Korean men go to the army, it can be embarrassing for those who don't go to the army.

    So the group being onboard with the plan made sense to me personally - it became clear from the moment the fight kicked off that the O voters were willing and able to kill the X voters to make sure the game continues. So it's clear to them there is no getting out of the game and taking a share of the money. The game was guaranteed to continue until the last man standing, so it was a choice of keep playing the games and die, or fight the masks and have a chance of getting out alive.
    Of course not everyone was onbosrd as well though which makes sense- some know they aren't skilled with guns and wouldn't stand a chance even if they approve of the plan, or they were the O voters who are against it but they're not going to go up against the guys who now have guns so they just plan to wait it out and hopefully some more competition dies.

      To be honest, I feel Greg’s perspective very deeply, I find the team’s motivation to rebel is lacking in plot. But your comment does help me justify it. You highlighted a great point.
      Though arguably, I think if they try their best to kill off the O team, they’d have much a better chance of survival (and GUARANTEED price money), rather than fighting hundreds of trained guards with a very small team that’s average in combat.
      Granted, going after the “bad guys” is much better ethically than killing the O team… but that’s just Gi-Hun’s goal. I feel like the other players focus throughout the games are to just survive, get the money, and get out of there as fast as they can. Killing off the O team has more chance to reach that goal instead of fighting a much larger system. The writers don’t really highlight the players’ HATRED towards the game makers.
      I guess your argument is that the O team has a definite chance of winning the fight against X, that’s why out of desperation the X team agree with Gi-Hun’s plan. But I suppose that opens up the debate, if you’re one of the players, which one would you think has a better chance for your survival: trying to win against the O team in a dark room with limited weapon, or against hundreds of trained guards in an unfamiliar battlefield?

    • @varafaust2645
      @varafaust2645 17 дней назад +7

      @@GoogleUser-wz1il I think you've got a point there, the chances of success are very slim going up against either the O team or the guards, but yes chances are likely to be much better with taking out the Os. The way I see it though, is there seems to be a certain moral threshold the X voters have that the O voters don't that's implied.
      I think the show frames the X and O voters as 'good guys bad guys' - obviously its not that simple but the show definitely wants to infer that from what we see. So while the O voters are very willing to murder other players for money, the X voters would prefer not to murder anyone - but being in the position they're in, it's like the lesser of two evils. The ones in control that were making them do this in the first place, kill each other over money, deserve to die more than the other players and would do a greater good overall.
      And it was only a handful of them that did go ahead with this plan which helps with the realism as well - I'm sure not every X voter felt the same and maybe would have preferred to just take their chances fighting back the O team hence why they didn't join. Just a few of them felt that strongly about it.
      But thats just my interpretation, your view is absolutely valid so I suppose it depends on what you think each of those characters had that kind of moral compass or not to justify it

With the X team having more women and elderlies, plus the O team being more "merciless" and "blood-thirsty" than X... it makes much more sense why they think Gi-Hun's plan is their last chance of survival! Thank you, you helped me justify the show.

      But i also think it's as Gi-hun said, if they don't do this now, there will be a much greater sacrifice. This plan involves only a handful of people fighting against the guards. It's the plan with the least chance of success, but it's also the one with least potential casualties. If the game continues, how many people die in each round? Like about a hundred each? That's a lot of deaths.

The money is obviously not as important as their lives to at least half of these people. Also, if their rebellion succeeds, the physical cash is all right there in the facility. They can just grab it if they win, with the added benefit of no one ever having to play the games again.

      literally like half their team was ex-military to some degree. Average is an understatement. Gihuns been training for it for at least 2 years, one is ex ROK, two marines (given, they didnt know Dae-ho was either lacking actual experience or suffering from such heavy ptsd, so the odds seemed better at the time). And while it wasn't divulged, im pretty sure from In-hos 2v1 situation against Thanos that they knew he was a pretty good fighter. I feel like they probably would vibe a higher chance of success doing something they KNOW how to do versus a random ass game that they might be absolute shit at and die. I'll agree that they didnt really highlight their hatred so much, but also people are quick to follow someone they think has a good idea of whats going on. I doubt many people would be very rational at all in situations like those. So someone who's beaten the game before thats returned and been successful to that point would be pretty convincing.
      I agree with his comment of having one more episode to flesh that out though. I think an 8 episode 'half' season would have made more sense.

      @@GoogleUser-wz1il I'd urge you to watch Jung Bae's (Player 390 / Gi Hun's friend) reaction to the Front Man killing another contestant again. If he was that uncomfortable with the murder of another contestant in the heat of the game, what makes you think he'd be comfortable with it outside of the game?
      People like you and Greg keep framing it as needing sufficient motivation against the game organisers, when the show depicts how they've been boxed into that corner. If they are uncomfortable with killing other contestants, and they can't get out through the vote, what course of action is left to them?
      The show from the very first vote shows half the people (excluding the Front Man) want out just with the dire consequences of the games. They're tricked into thinking it's just games of skill in the second, and the true nature of the games begins to reveal itself in Mingle, where the imposed scarcity means the contestants have to fight each other to survive.
      As viewers, we (should) know this is the arc of the games, Gi Hun warns the contestants at the start this is what will happen, and the people who joined him in his rebellion have come to this realisation throughout the games.
      The show intentionally depicts contestants going from O to X. Most of the people in Gi Hun's small rebellion have voted O at some point. Even if they don't share Gi Hun's goal, how is it more palatable for them to kill people they were in the same group as just a few days ago than the organisers who have killed literally 100s of contestants by that point?

    16:10 it’s not about them building to “I hate these people; we have to take them out.” They realized that they were going to be forced to keep playing and would most likely die with nothing. They’re choosing the possibility of living by taking over the game. That’s why Gihun allowing sacrifice is so extra fucked because it kinda forces rebellion participation since they definitely don’t have the votes.

    majority of westerners are saying that the fighting scene is rigged and how come Koreans in the drama are afraid of dieing in the drama but when they start fire fighting they act like special forces? You gotta know that all Korean men go mandatory military for 3 years these days it has been shortened but the actors ages in their mid 40s and above were 3 years. It is not just regular military training like other countries but koreans train the most vigorous training in preperation for war when invaded by NK! we host war games, physical training to survive by beat downs, weapons training etc. hell walks for thousands of km every quater, special martial arts training intention to kill(not your average TKD), all men are combat TKD 2nd degree blackbelts before their discharge, and soldiers stationed near the dmz put their lives everyday in patrolling the dmz where constant boobytraps, mines claymores are hidden and detonated by the NK on a regular basis. Such training for war has made korean men so fierce in which when korean men after military service gets into a brawl on the streets they try to kill each other so to prevent these happenings they rather call the police rather than shed blood and get into trouble. Lool what happened to Johnnie Somali in Korea! He still is in Korea and can't get out of the country and constantly gets beat downs by Koreans. Even our parents age in their mid 70s and 80s knows how to fire a m16 and ak47 they were the last soldiers to fight the communist after even the US pulled out during the Vietnam war. After military mandatory service, all men have to undergo national guard for 10 years in which they undergo shooting and war game exercises monthly. Regular ROK forces militarty training compared to other nations are similar to special forces training in their nations. All men actors here in this drama have served in the military during the past ages. don't be deceived by the smiles and politeness that Koreans give to foreigners but squid games clearly shows the reality of Korea and what people we are.

    Greg, I think your point about the season not feeling like a build up to an armed rebellion is intentional. From what In-Ho said at the end, this was all Gi-Hun wanting to play hero. He let his anger and pride cloud his judgment and was not acting in the best interest of other people. He got people killed because he wanted to live out his revenge fantasy.

      Gi Hun planned this because he predicted the ''O'' team will kill a lot of ''X'' team in the dark, so a fair voting would not take place. So, all of them would have to play the remaining games and die. Almost everyone would die in that process. But, if they rebel, more people could survive, if they manage to beat them and kill the captain. Its a greater good approach, which is morally questionable. But this was indeed the best approach, because they will die anyway while playing the games, but at least now they might win, or die doing the right thing, and not while playing the games those evil people orchestrated. People are not really understanding his reasons.

    • @mazzzyDs
      @mazzzyDs 18 дней назад +25

      I honestly don't get why he's so hung up on it. The show never shows the majority of contestants unifying to rebel with Gi Hun. It's mostly people that he worked with during the games and some redshirts. Hyun Joo and 246 are exceptions, and the former is explained by Hyun Joo seeing the person kindest to her get gunned down by the organisers (not the Os). 246 is barely a character outside of being a wrinkle for No Eul.
      The reason it had to happen now isn't just some contrived pacing thing, but because this was the best opportunity to be in close proximity to the soldiers.
      What's shown in this episode is the fallout of precisely what happens when you force a direction without support on your side.
      This season started with the premise that Gi Hun could show the game organisers that humanity could be better like he did Oh Il Nam at the end of Season 1. He failed to protect everyone in the first game, failed to convince people to vote to leave 3 times (partly In-ho's doing), now failed with the rebellion. It's precisely where a season should be at the end of a second act.
      The problem isn't an unearned rebellion, but that the series has been advertised as having a Season 2 and 3, rather than a Season 2 Part 1 and 2.

    • @LMarti13
      @LMarti13 18 дней назад +23

      this is so wrong it actually hurts. you are literally agreeing with the main villain of the series which should give you some pause. Gi-Hun's plan was literally the only chance they had at making it out alive. they were going to lose the next vote, and there is no way in hell that more than one person was going to "win" the games

    • @hellfish2309
      @hellfish2309 18 дней назад +4

      I liked that this season is about the Games being more about a revolution against the “established order” and why the most earnest ones suffer from compromises; Gi-Hun forfeiting loyalists to gain a tactical advantage is an appropriately dark turn
      HOWEVER, I could have used more scenes earlier in the show demonstrating the respect he earns maybe even of both Os and Xs in order to dramatize the weight of sacrificing some by intentionally leaving them unprepared for the Os assault; the games 3 years ago showed some players advancing because of the willing sacrifice of others, but rationalized or not Gi-Hun is letting some Xs get killed to throw his rebellion

      I just explained why I don't think money is a sticking point when THEY are deciding what to do in this episode, because this part seems to bother Greg, and for me, there's no reason to be septic here. They just decide to play the game a different way, with money or death always on the line.
      And the "they will fight themselves to death" is not really a new thing. It's literally what they suppose to do in fact... one way or another.

He just wanted to get to the organizers, tryna be a hero and ease his guilty conscience so he cld spend his money w/o guilt regardless of casualties. He shld have warned the Xs who wanted to be saved (the Os don't)& not just his group and also ensure they stay alert, like a counterattack, hoping that they'd end up with the majority vote. Instead, he allowed half to be slaughtered and led another set to be killed. Now, they're definitely in the minority.

      Those who are saying he wanted to play the hero have the most shallow interpretation of his character. Gi Hun wanted to save people. He took a chance. He put faith in humanity and got betrayed again. If thats stupid and playing the hero, then we are same. Because we would have done the same in his position. Otherwise, the villain 001 becomes right. my take on the 011 guard lady is that she's someone who was on her way to being desensitized to the violence and cruelty, but still tried to hold onto some of her own principles. by the end she was completely subjected to the system and let all that go, so she faded into the background like any other faceless guards so we never see her again.

    I think this show's genius lies with its genuinely willing to kill off its characters despite how loved some are. Obviously the episodes drop all at once so they couldnt be like "the fans love her lets kill her" but they specifically create characters for us to root for only to kill them off. The girl and the immigrant in the first season. This season we have a dad fighting for his daughter, a depressed girl crying to go home, Thanos (while he is an asshole he was hilarious and i genuinely didnt expect them to kill him off). Shoot the whole scene of the girl with the piercings, any other show wouldve had the shy kid either throw down the bottle and she defends herself, or have him jump down and save her. But squid game? Nah, watch her get brutally stabbed to death by a fork despite us setting up an underdog moment

    I think the motivation for unni to rebel with gi-hun because she was already feeling guilty for voting to stay when she saw the pregnant woman crying, then her friend was murdered in front of her because of the game, so i didnt find it that unbelievable that she would have wanted to take revenge. Also their team bonded a lot. last season there were only a few ppl looking out for each other (like in pairs) and it was more like everyman for himself. This season there was a lot more of a team effort for everyone to survive. Like the relay game, everyone was cheering everyone else on, so when theres a chance to fight to save everyone, there's more motivation to do so.

    I think they'll force Gi-Hun to watch and bet on the players in season 3... Maybe they'll even threaten his daughter, wife, Sang-woo's mother with 67's brother... MAYBE THEY'LL EVEN MAKE HIM BET THEIR LIVES.
    It would be an interesting parallel with him betting at the beginning of season 1.

    Notice how at the end, it's still poor people killing each other, the soldiers are also people in need and in despair as seen in the beggining of the seasons, all of this is an entertainment to the rich

    Throughout history we’ve seen individuals motivate followers to join their cause, with no real justification. From the beginning Gi-hun is motivated by his revenge, anger, and guilt…by doing so he is blinded by that ambition and leads his followers to certain death. I think that might have been the point of this entire season. Gi-hun is not the hero he believes he is, because the only way to truly end the game is to sacrifice others for the “greater good,” which ultimately is exactly what Squid Game is.

    45:25 Id also use the fact that the huge lights out brawl had just happened b4 the mini revolution was initiated. When the lights came back on im sure a couple ppl who decided to stay for money saw all the lives they taken by both the X's and O's and maybe somehow finally recognized the brutal nature and violent way of thinking the games have instilled in all of these players. Imagining myself in this situation Ik that fight wouldv'e snapped me back into reality and I understand why some of them went with the option to rebel for their freedom to try and avoid their inevitable death in this game

    the main issue most people have with season 2 is seeing it as a separate season from season 3. Technically yes, but that's only true on a technicality. For all intents and purpose, Season 2 and Season 3 is one season. Let go of the false pretense and false expectations. Don't make assumptions and solutions based on half a season.
