Brings back memories. I don't have hardly any tools anymore. I still have all my high end SAE tools but cheap craftsman and kobalt metric tools. I started at 15 under the best mentor and still the best mechanic I've ever seen. Ages 18 to 19 I worked at Toyota as a lube tech, then 20 to 21 as a real technician for Volkswagen. I then went to a Chevrolet dealership and really became a great a technician. I worked ten years there and became the number one guy the last 5 years (learning to use a scope and actually becoming proficient with it is what separated me from the pack), just some advice for you. I left four and half years ago and now I only work on older stuff.
It's so funny thinking back. For some reason I was enamored by the technology. I read so many books, asked so many questions from the veteran guys and went to every seminar and training I could go too or dealer would send me. I wanted to get every single certificate that was possible too . I put my heart and soul into learning the systems like the back of my hand. I had no interest in the old carb analog vehicles. I even taught myself to do some tuning and programming. It's funny how I "kinda" restored a 1971 Monte Carlo around my 8th year at Chevrolet dealership and I became Hooked on those old vehicles.
I'm just telling my story and it really doesn't have a point. Your video just made me think about my journey as a mechanic and how it's went so different than I thought. Stick with it young man and you will be 🙀 how rewarding it can be.
You also have to be consistent because it's only been 4.5 years for me and I had to borrow a scan tool from a buddy because my wife's car was acting up. I went from being a really good driveability guy and someone who could diagnose quickly and effectively to almost struggling for a bit. I couldn't believe how fast you can lose skills. Well, it's not so much skills but a mindset and a process of thinking.

You got a really nice set of tools, its interesting to see what different fields use, Im a a bobcat dealer and we mostly deal with wrenches for hydraulic hoses and fittings and then your misc. socket sizes, 1/2 9/16 ect. but really most of the guys where I work dont have a massive set of tools because you dont need a whole lot

Hey what's up man. You have a nice tool box setup. I have been into cars since 16 in 1989. Became a mechanic in the Army for four years. Then got out and have been an auto tech since. My suggestion. Get the basics down to where you don't even have to think about it, your body will just do it. Then move on to another section of the car to master. I am currently getting my diagnostic skills to that level. I have seen other techs try to take the whole car on at once. Almost impossible to master the whole car at once. Good luck to you. You seem to have a really good head on your shoulders. BTW I have an RC channel which is my hobby. Love to fix things. Keep up the good work buddy!

I like watching these videos where people take the time to explain what the most common uses of the tools are. Most are self-explanitory but nearly every tool has various "side uses" where they might not be the perfect tool for the job, but they come in handy if you don't have access to the perfect tool.

No actually my parents don’t want me to be a mechanic, but they realize that I’m doing pretty good for myself so they’re OK with it now. I was only ever mentored by my first boss who taught me so so much help me with a couple tools, but everything else was bought either through flea markets, and Facebook market place where that people cut me a deal because of my age. I’ve worked on mostly Europeans for a long time now over the summer for the last five months I was working on pretty much just exotic cars, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mercedes, AMG, etc.. bet that shop is in great and I kind of jump into it a little bit in my newest video. But I start at a Porsche racing team tomorrow, so really excited about that.

  • @jamesvarnell9917

For a young man starting out your tool collection is impressive, but I think you should save up some money and work on getting a bigger toolbox, not necessarily a tool truck box but something that will work for you and then organize your box so you know where everything is and what you need to get in the future. If you plan to stay in the industry and have a "tool addiction" like the rest of us who watch these videos, your going to need a bigger setup. I was an industrial mechanic for years and I started out with a box like yours but I quickly figured out that I needed a much bigger setup, I personally went with the US GENERAL Series 1- 56" chest with the top chest and side cabinet, and it has served me well over the years and now I'm looking to move into a 72" setup. Like others have said once you start collecting tools you never stop. I will also recommend you get a full set of impact sockets for all the drive sizes, simply because you can use them with air, battery and hand ratchets, once you have a "full set " then work on the wants after you get the "needs" and the best advice I can go you is talk to the older guy's who have spent a lifetime in the industry and get advice from them on the tools that are needs more than wants. Good luck with your job and your future in the industry, we need more good mechanics and you are on the right path to become a great mechanic.

I wish I would’ve started wrenching professionally way earlier and would’ve got access to professional tools a lot earlier. Would’ve made life a lot easier. 2 years in, just wish I would’ve kept my old set up a little longer, but I needed more room

Dude, you got a small fortune invested.
If you transition into a newer modern box(not that you really need one), i dont think you would need to buy too much more tools. You're pretty much sqaured away.
