How To Ship A Package 📦 Shipping Guide 101 For Beginners!

- If shipping your handmade products has you pulling your hair out or you don’t know where to start, then stick around because I’m sharing the three key things you need to have in place to ship like a pro, worry-free.
I have shipped thousands of packages in my time as a business owner so I’ve seen just about every situation imaginable. And shipping, at least for me, can make or break how you feel about your business when you get up in the morning. You're a maker and so you spend all of this time making items and you want to get them out in the world. But if shipping is a hassle, then you’re going to be really frustrated and tired about this process. And that is not what we want. You want to basically snap your fingers and have those packages out the door, and that's how it can be if you get a system in place. So today, I'm going to talk about three key things.
First, I'm going to talk about how to package your products for safe travel. Then, I'm going to talk about software and sites to use for postage and shipping labels. And then finally, I’m going to talk about some tools and equipment that you might need to get it all going. The goal is that you’re printing your shipping labels at home.

Shipping is a big reason I have been stuck in selling my handmade items. One problem is that shipping from Israel is not as reliable as it is in the US. It's also expensive to ship overseas and I presume most buyers will be outside of Israel
The shipping costs is true, but honestly, I've found that if you have the right buyers who truly want your product, they will understand the shipping costs and will be fine with paying them.
@@CreativeHiveCo Thank you Mei, that is wonderful to hear. Do you have a video of where / how to find good buyers? I liked hearing that you gift wrap your jewelry. I love gift wrapping and I tend to add a hand made card to my items.

Love your vid- you get straight to the point. Most of the other videos are too much chatty fluff that I'm not interested in. You, on the other hand, are a great educator. xo
Thank you so much, Cynthia! I really appreciate that!
Thank you! Love your videos! I am about to open my shop on Spotify and saw they have “discounted shipping” or something like that. Also I saw USPS and UPS have prepay options that may reduce my shipping costs. Do you think those are good options? Thanks again for all your clear explanations. My daughter just took a video of me to add to Shopify and social media, I’m afraid it’s going to look awful because it’s me. But I need to get this open now. Timing is an issue. Thanks!
A lot of platforms have an agreement with the USPS where they can offer discounted shipping - Etsy and eBay both offer this as well. I wouldn't prepay shipping on any platform because that is holding up money you could be using in other ways.
Thank you for the great information! I'm interested in starting to ship my products and have come across a problem. How do you ship something without revealing your address? I'm currently working out of my home and would prefer not to put my home address on the return address section. I've read that you can maybe rent out a PO Box and do it that way, but I was wondering if you knew of anything more cost-effective.
Yes, you can do a PO box, or you can look into a virtual PO box, which is a little cheaper.
I am so thankful DHL has that kind of service where you can ship from home was worrying about that because I don’t have a car😂
Yes! Many services do offer package pickup now, even the USPS!
You're easily the cutest advisor
Haha, thank you, I appreciate that!

Thank you! Do you have a recommendation for a good weighing scale for a new small business shipping out low weight items like greeting cards? I’m having trouble finding an accurate one! ☀️
I use this one amzn.to/3k3vaEm from BriFit for weighing small yarn items or fragrances that weigh VERY little and it does an amazing job. It's accurate to .01g, but you can also find ones accurate to .001g. Instead of searching for just 'digital scale', try using 'digital jewelry scale' as your search term and then look for the accuracy rating.
You can shop around but I have one similar to this from Amazon! I would look to make sure it can measure to the 0.1 ounce so you can input accurate measurements. smile.amazon.com/Graduation-Mutritional-Calculator-Stainless-Tempered/dp/B086YPCYV7/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=postage+scale&qid=1602888039&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&smid=A1H1JMVW8N7OEF&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzUjFLMlVCQUw3N05MJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDYwMzI3M1ZKTjA1S0VTM1A3MSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzkxMjEwM0NUSjJUMlI2UFVKUSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

I've been using pirateship, however recently their prices for domestic shipping rates went up a dollar. So now it's $3 fee. If I'm only selling a less than $5 items, is $3 worth it for shipping?
Your customer should be paying for the shipping cost, so it's really a question of will they pay $3 on a $5 item, and I have to say that if they really want it, yes, they will.
Hi!I have a question. First, thank you for this important info! Second, can I ship to where usps will pickup my packages if I live in an apartment?
If you have a place that you can do package pickup in your apartment that's awesome. You can also request a package pickup but I suppose it would depend on the safety of the place you were to leave the packages, or you would have to meet the postman when they come to pick up.
When you are listing your items weight, do you just list the weight of just the product or do you weigh it packaged with all the shipping materials included? Thank you!!
Weigh it once it's ready to head out the door. You need the total weight of the entire thing.
Hey I have a question. What do you think about the website platform big cartel for starting a business?
Shopify is the clear winner here! www.merchantmaverick.com/shopify-vs-big-cartel/
Hi, when you do the Usps package pickup do you just put your packages by your front door and the mailman picks it up?
You can put them in your mailbox with the flag up or you can schedule a pickup with the USPS if you need them to come to the door.
Can you do a video on how to ship internationally?
I'll add it to my list of suggestions, thank you!

Thank you ❤️

Is anyone else having problems with USPS losing or delaying packages? Also, this video was really helpful!
This has been an ongoing issue since the start of the pandemic, and packages have been taking longer than usual, but I feel like it's been slowly getting better lately.
tysM !!
You're welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
I ship from my sales dashboard on each platform. What is the benefit of using a third party? Tracking expenses?
For some, sites like PirateShip offer reduced rates over the USPS, and you can integrate multiple selling platforms at once so you are not toggling between them.
I don't even have a computer. I know crazy right?! Any recommendations on inexpensive computers/thermal printers?
For something like this you are going to have to shop around and read reviews because products are constantly changing. Dymo printers have a great reputation, though.
Hey can you make a video on how to deal with customers and payment stuff it will help a lot
Thanks for the suggestions!
I don’t want my customers to be able to track where the package are sent from, do you have any recommendations for staying safe/anonymous when selling online?
Yes! You can use a vitrual mailbox: ruclips.net/video/H2SjE079050/видео.html
Hi so I want to ship a package and I want to get the money from them like they give it in cash not card I give it to the delivery guy and he comes back and gives me the cash???
Hi! Are you asking about how cash-on-delivery (COD) works? If so, you can check out this article explaining how it works: www.investopedia.com/terms/c/cashondelivery.asp#:~:text=The%20customer%20pays%20the%20deliverer,after%20deducting%20the%20handling%20charges. Hope that helps! Good luck! 💕💕
I know this is a long shot given you are US based, but if you have any tips for shipping companies in Australia, it would be great! Australia Post is quite expensive.
You may want to check out Pack & Send. www.packsend.com.au/
I don't get it if the upps boxes are free do we just pay for the weight of the box to ship?
You're going to be charged depending on the size and weight of your package. You can check out this link for some reference: www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm Hope that helps!! 😊😊
I have been searching for days for some sort of rigid shipping option. I'm selling my art on printed bookmarks and cards, and they fit in envelopes, but I want it to be more professional and safe, especially since the items are paper. I cannot find a box that works, so I'm thinking of getting bubble mailers, and a some rigid chip board? Would that work?
You may be thinking of stay flats or rigid mailers? www.papermart.com/p/kraft-self-seal-non-bendable-mailers/144000?campaignid=9558714703&matchtype=&keyword=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2af-BRDzARIsAIVQUOc0dq04zuknA_Llrw3JgWx7j14k1gEboNE-zXQSSa6taHhfx5I4g5QaApj4EALw_wcB

You're so welcome Anet! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
So cutee
Thank you for watching!
I'm curious to know your viewpoint on flat rate shipping versus calculated shipping versus including shipping price in items so that shipping is "free."
I think that shipping should be obvious to the customer - for some people, they can't "hide" a $25 shipping cost in their product cost. I think that flat rate vs. calculated will depend on your product. If you sell all one type of thing and you have a very consistent shipping cost, you could do a flat rate. But if you have things of various sizes and weights you may need to do calculated to make it as accurate as possible. I do like offering free shipping as a sales incentive, though.
thanks cuh

Where do we get the shipping slip that we put at the outer box
Hi! You can either get/purchase those from the courier physical location or you can print those at home. 😊😊
heres a tip! if you dont know how to safely close your items/ protect it. you could probably put tape on it!
It is definitely important to make sure that the items are fully protected from the outside.
What dimensions of the shipping package do u use?
Hi Julia! It depends. I use a variety of different sizes depending on the product.
My usps will not pick or drop at door. I live in a rural area and my driveway is over 50 feet long with no turn around. Last year they won't let their drivers back up over 50 feet which is bull.
I'm really sorry to hear about your bad experience with USPS. Hope they get that resolved soon!
@@CreativeHiveCo There is no resolve because it's their policy. The only left to is take packages to the post office which isn't too bad, its only a 5 minute drive. Thanks for your response 👍
My my u saved me I'm 10 using her phone and doing a bizznass!
Woww!! Your parents must be so proud of you!! ❤️❤️ I'm so happy to help!!❤️❤️ All the best to you and your business!!! 🎉🎉
How do they get the package?Do I have to go to the mail and give it to them?Like do the mail ppl get it from me or do I have to give it to them?😧
If you purchase postage online you can schedule a pickup with the USPS otherwise you would have to bring it to your local post office.
My negotiated price is $5 for
Any suggestions for weighing scale?
I would suggest any relatively cheap on on Amazon. Just make sure it's to the .01 oz like these: smile.amazon.com/s?k=postage+scale+.01+oz&crid=2CUB1LWIQ7P80&sprefix=postage+scale+.%2Caps%2C225&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_15
Does it cost more if it’s international ?
Shipping costs to another country are typically higher than domestic, yes.
Any Scale brand recommendations?
Hi Angie! It really depends on what your products are and what your business requires but you can check out some of your possible options here: smallbiztrends.com/2022/05/best-postal-scales.html#:~:text=The%20Ultegra%20Max%20Parcel%20Scale,5%E2%80%B3%20LCD%20display.
Do you have to pay to ship out a customer order
You have to pay out the cost of the postage, but that cost should be paid to you buy your customer when they order, either as a shipping charge or somehow included into your pricing.
I sell amigurumi but I don't know how I would ship it. any advice?
It will depend on your brand but you could wrap in tissue and tie it with twine/ribbon, put it in a glassine bag with a branded sticker, or find small boxes to mail them in.
Hi I’m a mom of two boys starting my own business making resin art and jewelry. I wanted to ask how can I still ship my items without having a website for my shop? I sell through my Instagram and just want to ship through a website to print my labels
Hi Daisy! Congrats on building your own resin art and jewelry business!! ❤️ With regards to shipping, you may want to check directly with the courier. 😊
Can usps print out a shipping label for you or no?
Hi Henry, you can purchase your shipping in a physical USPS location where they will print it for you or your can purchase and print at home. It is usually cheaper to print it at home though!
I make rings. I have no idea how to ship one. Please help!
It is going to depend on the type of packaging you want to use. This video has the best information to get you started!
I don't even have a computer though 😕 plus I don't think I need a scale to ship stickers do I?
You can ship items by taking them to the post office if need be. Up to a certain weight, no, you can send stickers as regular mail.
How do we pay for shipping?
It depends on where you are purchasing your postage. If you go to the post office you would pay in person. If you are on Etsy, you can link your credit card and PayPal to your account, and several other platforms do the same or allow you to link your bank account to make transfers.
I worked at a ups for a week and everybody throws the packages, 😩.
This is really sad to hear 🙁
so for free usps pick up would i still have to pay for shipping if i do where do i do it
Yes, you still have to pay the postage fees. You can purchase postage through Etsy, ebay, and PayPal, plus other postage companies like PirateShip or stamps.com.
@@CreativeHiveCo ohh so with the postage stamps?
Yes, or if you purchase postage online they have you print a label for the package.
What i do so you buy that box right what i do is take one and throw it on the floor a few times, if it has a dent then dont use it
That is definitely an interesting way to check your packaging! Giving it a true test of it's structure!
Yea its kinda weird but it will likely be thumping even more in a truck with other boxes that are likely heavy
Shipping is so outrageously expensive that you should do free pick up and free boxes on principle. May as well make USPS pay for those expensive although I've tried looking for their free boxes and all they told me was the flat rate boxes that had only one way overpriced shipping fee of $21. Litterally it's way cheaper to buy my own box and ship for a fraction of the price. I don't understand where people are finding these affordable shipping with free boxes.
You can order Priority and Regional boxes from the USPS online. There are different sizes and varied shipping.
hi ! can 15 year olds send packages?
Yes they can!
Hi. I have a question🥺
Hi there, feel free to ask!
I’m selling my jewelry on instagram soon. Do I need to download the shipping software? I’m new to this and nervous.
You are going to need to have some type of shipping plan in place. If you plan to package and print labels at home, then you're going to need some type of shipping platform.
@@CreativeHiveCo omg I'm selling my earrings tommrow. Can you please help me?
Lesson learned: Anybody shipped through UPS. They have stringent requirements for packaging. If you do not follow then insurance claim will be declined if damaged item is received.
UPS informed me as below. If buyer do mot support and provide packaging material to UPS then we will be punished. Keep terms for buyer to keep the material if they receive damaged items and do not refund unless they support the investigation.
INDICATE THE INTERNAL CUSHIONING USED (Indicate all that apply)
- Air Bags - Loose Fill
- Bubble Wrap - Paper
- Corrugated - Peanuts
- Double Boxed - None
- Foam - Other (Explain)
