    The Sutro Tunnel is just outside of Virginia City and if you have never been there then you need to get go and see what the great Folks of the Sutro Foundation are doing to preserve our history. They have been working tirelessly for Years to preserve some of the most iconic structures Virginia City has and you will see that in this video. If you love History like I do then donate your time, skills or a couple bucks to help " Keep the Dream Alive " .... they would greatly appreciate it and it would help so much. Just click the link to get started. Thanks. thesutrotunnel.org/

      Jeff, you say they are now open to the public. Are there regular days/hours they are open during the week, or is it hit or miss like the hoist engine? I'll be in Reno for a reunion the first week of October, and since some in the group are talking about a visit to Virginia City, well the tunnel ain't that far away!

    My aunt and uncle used to live in Carson City and move to Placerville. My uncle was a retired Woodshop teacher and would perform volunteer blacksmithing at Sutter's Mill. I spent many summers in Placerville as a kid and traveling down to sutter's mill working in the blacksmithing shop with him. this whole area reminds me of Sutter's Mill as a kid on summer break.

Then, you give the best class of classifying and panning I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot). Then you find gold! It is truly a pleasure watching you work Jeff. Then to top it off you get wet!!! I was 6 and most were skinny dipping so we left. That whole area had mills homes etc. My grandfather's secretary veas w us and she was born in Dayton so I got a tour of buildings that weren't there any more. Nice educate people on the history and geology as well as the many specifics on mining and milling. Keep it up.

    Hi Folks,
    I visited the Sutro Tunnel in 1964, and I seem to recall that there were two tracks; one to carry miners etc. In, and another to take overburden, and some ore, out. Sutro got royalties on the ore, and also on the amount of ice that they brought in to cool those shafts. The rock temperature was something like 100 degrees(?) so they brought in the ice to cool down the mines, and miners down. It seems like there was an informational handout, written like a newspaper written about the tunnel. It was a long time ago.
    Fondest of memories,
    R.

    When boards come right out a mill they are 2x4, but after the get planed and put in a kiln to dry they shrink. Back in the day they didn't mill and dry kiln lumber like we do now.

    • @Askjeffwilliams
      @Askjeffwilliams  Год назад +1

      then why not start with a larger board to account for that

    • @NET-POSITIVE
      @NET-POSITIVE Год назад +1

      @Askjeffwilliams it keeps cuts of lumber uniform regardless if they are dry kiln, planed, or normal. Otherwise, there is no standard cutting among different mills and countries. Starting with a larger border also makes more wasted board feet. STANDARDIZE it very important with little waste. How is that for common sense!!

    Man vintage equipment is some of the coolest things i ever come across. the simplicity and longevity is unmatched from old tools and machinery. It was a true free market where big corps didnt take over. so the companies had to be the best of the best to sell their product.. its when the dollar wasnt so inflated, where quality (companies Image) was more important than making a few more bucks. as time grew people got greedier ( 2x4 wood order in a nutshell) until they were able to get them so cheap that replacement was cheaper than building one nice one . the consumer always loose in the long run.

    I went there in the early 1980’s still water draining. I asked for permission and was told that the tunnel was partially collapsed and not safe to go in and I didn’t…., pictures taken 35 mm

      Ha there was no grate covering the tunnel…. I do remember someone had parked a ski boat inside. Something like you would take to Lake Tahoe.

    Elképesztően nagy támfák és hatalmas méretű járat , eszméletlen pénzeket emészt fel egy ilyen restaurálás főleg hivatalossan is biztonsagossá téve.

      igen, az ilyen méretű és léptékű bányáknak nagy cégeknek kell gyártaniuk őket, mivel sok pénzbe kerülnek

    So Jeff, now someone poured big bucks into a tunnel that is useless except as a tourist attraction? Is some expecting enough draw to this tunnel to make a profit? Or are they planning on a retreat from the Appococlipse?

    Hey, Jeff. Can you explain how the story pole on that winch works. How does it mark the distance on the pole?

    • @Askjeffwilliams
      @Askjeffwilliams  Год назад +1

      you betcha ....just like a dial indicator they paint lines on the story poll when the skip bucket or skip car gets to each level to know when to slow down for each stop and for accuracy when it is in the exact spot they paint a mark on the drum

    Jeff tell them to finish it with concrete and rebar and have that posh woodwork as the entrance. Save a fortune and saves some trees.
