The lyrics of this song are in the late stages of the Old Irish language, and date from the 9th century. They were written down in the margins of an Irish manuscript, and evoke the writer's sense of relief that on that night, the sea was riddled with storms, therefore making an attack by Viking raiders impossible. This inspired me to write something hopeful with a sense of permeating melancholy: I like to imagine that the writer knows the Vikings will inevitably attack, but that they get to have one more night alive, and will spend it dancing to music. I based my pronunciation on Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin's musical rendition of this poem, but I cannot specify whether this is a reconstructed historical pronunciation, a modern one, and if modern, of which current accent and dialect of Irish.

Modern Scottish Gaelic translation:

English translation (Kuno Meyer's translation):
Bitter is the wind tonight,
It tosses the ocean’s white hair,
Tonight I fear not the fierce warriors of Lothlend/Lochlann* (Norway)
Coursing on the Irish sea,
Alternate translation:
Bitter is the wind tonight,
It tosses the ocean’s white hair,
I fear not the coursing of a clear sea,
By the fierce heroes from Lothlend.
*Notice the usage of the term Lothlend, today rendered as Lochlann in the modern Gaelic languages and Llychlyn in Welsh. This was the exonym for Scandinavia, typically more specifically for Norway, by the Celts of Ireland and Great-Britain.

My Welsh friends really love this, I think your Celtic and Spanish are your strongest of the western European varieties of music.
Thanks! That makes sense actually, I grew up around Spanish musicans when I lived in Southern France, and from 2009 to 2012 I practically only listened to Irish music, so I probably have an affinity for those two like you noticed

Thank you for this. It's amazing!. I am from Scotland, my great great grandmother and grandfather are from County Sligo in Ireland. My friend from Scotland has Viking blood in his veins. You are an amazing musician also historian.....but surprisingly you sing in all languages. You also bring the true atmosphere of the lands. I can picture the essence of life close to the earth as l listen. Words are frail.....but thank you for sharing your gift.

And everytime I hear a song sung in this beautiful language, Irish Gaelige, I can't help but feel proud of my heritage and for a land I've never been to, but one day hope to live on. I have irish roots my great grandparents and my great great grandparents were all born lived and worked in Ireland, my great great grandparents were born in Ireland but came to UK for work whilst my great grandparents my nanna's mother and father was born and worked in ireland they were maids for an irish family before they came to UK, thanks for this ❤

I’m definitely working on putting Old Norse texts to music, but it won’t be “Viking music” in the style of Wardruna/Heilung, I’ll be going for more historically accurate musical approaches a little closer to what the actual sound of Norse music may have been like, and generally with less battle/war themes, mostly passages from the sagas or love poems :)

This might be stupid to ask but I heard your elder scrolls song. The old video and one of the first you made. And I like it. I was hoping you could make songs from elder scrolls, dragon age, etc that is based on their culture. Like marching songs, shanties, nation anthems, you name it. I play eso and I use songs like these for guild marches and most of your music is my go to lol.
I’ve been thinking of doing covers of in-universe fantasy songs for a while like the Skyrim tavern songs or the Elves’ music from Lord of the Rings so you might see some of that at some point!
@@faryafaraji I was thinking that the songs should derive on cultures that the races of the game relate to. Like elder scrolls, imperials = Roman, Nords = Vikings, Etc. Well sound similar but have their own words and story in the song. But that’s just my opinion. Still your music is awesome bro.
Hi Farya, I love the song and hate to be the one to point this out but the modern Irish translation seems to be actually Scottish Gaelic and not Irish, they're very similar languages but some of the words and spelling would be different ( ocean in Irish would be spelt farraige, where as it is fairge in Scotts Gaelic for example) and the accents in Scottish Gaelic point the opposite way than in modern and old Irish.
Oops you’re right! I checked the article I found the translation on again and it does indeed say Scottish Gaelic; I’ll update the description!

Farya your Slavic and Byzantine musics are better than others (in my opinion). I think because you have more instruments and know a lot about than other cultures. But this Irish music feels like Im in the Irish seas.
