Song of Amergin - Old Irish Celtic Song

  • Music and vocals by Farya Faraji. Please note that this isn't reconstructed Irish music from the Old Irish linguistic period, only modern Irish music with an ancient theme. This poem comes down to us from the Irish mythological cycle. Amergin, a bard of the Milesians, invokes the spirit of Ireland using this invocation to part the storm summoned by their enemies, that keeps from reaching the shores of Ireland safely. The invocation works, and they land safely.
    The origins of the poem are unknown, we only now that may be the oldest extant piece of poetry from Ireland that has come down to us, and it is believed to be dated from around the early Middle-Ages, perhaps more generously, going back to Late Antiquity.
    The pronunciation is not reconstructed Old Irish but instead mimics the readings provided by modern Irish speakers of today. The instrumentation consists of Irish bagpipes, a flute, the Irish harp, and the bodhran drum.
    Lyrics in Old Irish:
    Am gaeth i m-muir,
    Am tond trethan,
    Am fuaim mara,
    Am dam secht ndirend,
    Am séig i n-aill,
    Am dér gréne,
    Am cain lubai,
    Am torc ar gail,
    Am he i l-lind,
    Am loch i m-maig,
    Am brí a ndai,
    Am bri danae,
    Am bri i fodb fras feochtu,
    Am dé delbas do chind codnu,
    Coiche nod gleith clochur slébe?
    Cia on co tagair aesa éscai?
    Cia du i l-laig fuiniud gréne?
    English translation:
    I am the wind on the sea;
    I am the wave of the sea;
    I am the bull of seven battles;
    I am the eagle on the rock
    I am a flash from the sun;
    I am the most beautiful of plants;
    I am a strong wild boar;
    I am a salmon in the water;
    I am a lake in the plain;
    I am the word of knowledge;
    I am the head of the spear in battle;
    I am the god that puts fire in the head;
    Who spreads light in the gathering on the hills?
    Who can tell the ages of the moon?
    Who can tell the place where the sun rests?

      @@Ejej-zi4vo The "th" sound disappearing wasn't due to English, it was likely on it's way out by middle Irish prior to the Norman invasion of the island. As for the rolled and tapped r plenty of young second language Irish speakers still use it, the exception would be millennials who tend to speak a pidgin language of sorts mixing Irish and English from my experience.

    Irish bagpipes are called Ùiléann pipes, as a modern donegal gaelic speaker, I understand very little although can grasp the basic sentiment of the piece.
    I particularly like the bodhrán as it's played as I believe it should be and not as an accompiant instrument as it is in most modern Irish ballads.

      I imagine being Belarusian you're already familiar. But just in case you aren't, Stary Olsa (Стары Ольса), are an incredible folk band from your country. In particular their trio of albums Litvins' Treasures: Middle Ages, Litvins' Treasures: Renaissance, and their absolute masterpiece that is Heroic Epos. They perform both creative and historical re-creations of music from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (and a bit of Middle Ages Poland too). Their version of Baharodzica (they have two, the one off Heroic Epos is the stronger recording) stands as one of the most powerful sounding pieces of folk music I have ever heard. Such an underrated folk group.

      Norn Ireland is a very difficult and challenging situation as the unemployment rate and many other factors (im not pointing fingers at who caused this, but it's likely to have been the governing body and it's security forces). Basically, the 6 counties are a liability for any government and its citizens. In the Northern Irish constitution it states that should the majority vote in a referendum would decide who they wanted to belong to but I believe there is now a Catholic voting majority, which is partly due to the restrictions put on loyalist governments gerrymandering. This would mean that a referendum should be triggered for a vote, but as you can see, nobody's calling for it??? Is it too expensive for the ROI to be whole again, or are they waiting for the UK to fix it before returning it. I will be surprised if it happens in my lifetime. The 6 counties have never been part of the ROI and its been hundreds of years since it was part of an independent Ireland 🇮🇪 .
      I'm glad I don't have to sort it out it's a hot mess politically and a real challenge socially ☘️

      Irish person, and Irish speaker here.
      The vast majority of Irish people don't use the word gaelic anymore (with the exception of older people and people from ulster). You will be torn alive online for using the word gaelic when referring to Irish (especially on facebook).
      It went out of usage from about the 1950's onwards.
      Old Irish is referred to as 'Old irish' or sean-gaeilge, not typically old gaelic.
      Gaelic is more synonymous with scots-gaelic nowadays (but that itself started out as Irish). It can be used for either of the three (Irish,Manx and scottish) but it isn't in wide usage for Irish outside of the diaspora.

    • @faryafaraji
