    Great review! I have not tried the JW 21, but I know they can blend some excellent whisky. In my estimation, older JW Green and (much) older JW Blue are some of the best blends I've ever sampled.
    After having tried all three of them, the Dewar's Double Double blends are absolutely phenomenal in my humble opinion. Of those, the 21 is my favorite in that it provides the experience of an older whiskey at an amazingly low price. I get all the flavor notes you find, but I also get just a bit of old leather and some very mild peat - hey, everybody's taste buds are a bit different! In any case, I agree that the Dewar's is a great deal for the price - single malt snobs just might be impressed!

    Congratulations on the viewing milestone. I have purchased all three versions of the 3D (Dewar's Double Double), and for the price, I don't think that there's a better deal in the current market. Although they are 375ml, comparatively, their price still amazing.

    Great review & great call on "malt snobs", I appreciate that as a blended whiskies lover & an amateur blender...Those 2 seem interesting, lot of careful blending work there apparently (though I regret the mention of "oak" only instead of which one in the Dewar's box !). Great deconstruction as well. Alas we can't find this Dewar's & all the limited editions of this series. The JW isn't often available either, so alas I haven't tried those to speak about them. I'm surprised though that the Dewar's didn't score higher though. Cheers !

      Ahhh Greg my bad - I blame moving house!! Haha I try my best to open minds. Agreed oak is a foregone term - every whisky should use an adjective of type or of place to attract modern day consumers! Cheers my friend🥃🥃🥃🥃

    Hi Mark, I have both of these and totally agree with the scores. The dewars is an amazing value in Ab(around 40cad a half bottle). The xr shows its age well and has some unique flavors while the dewars has a more traditional sherry bomb profile. cheers

    How is the XR compared to the JW blue label? I am confused which one to go for out of these two

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  2 года назад

      Thanks Mahir! If you are into the leathery waxy flavours that develop with age then 21 is the way to go. For pure balance and changing flavours every time you hit it, Blue is it. 21 should be a tad cheaper which also factors in.
      Happy whisky hunting!🥃🥃🥃🥃

    A thorough comparison Mark. Bravo. You should take a look at the older versions of the Dewars as well.

    Juggernaut? I enjoy Craigellachie but I am not sure what you mean here. I cannot comment on this comparison as I have not had the Johnnie Walker XR. However, I really love the Dewars Double Double and for as long as it remains affordable, it will always be on my shelf. I completely agree that if I were to pour the Dewars 21 for a single malt snob, they would believe it was such. Awesome you mentioned Royal Salute 21. I have been eyeing that. I can grab it for just under or over 100. I think I should, would you agree?

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  3 года назад +1

      Hi Jon! A meaty Craigellachie like comment thanks so much! I just mean it can out perform other malts in a lineup with its meatier style. It has a lot of fans out there. Royal Salute was an eye opener for me when I first tried it. I bet it sells more bottles than Chivas 18, and more than either JW 18 or 21. It used to be relatively expensive but it has barely increased in price in the last decade. Please do get one. I keep meaning to as well as my old review was of a mini. I’d love to have a bottle around.

    Why does JW bottle their expensive whiskies at 40% ABV? The Dewars 21 seems to be a much better value! Would love to see how it compares to the Craigellachie 13!

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  2 года назад

      The Dewars is a new bottling - there are some higher abv JW’s actually but yes mostly 40%. In this case despite the abv the JW 21 is still superior. I just bought Brackla 12 46% so perhaps I’ll do something like that.

    Finally decided to buy a 40% abv (XR) and it’s not even close to the Double Double 21. Easy win for Dewars.
    Surprised you rated XR a 90, easy 78 or an 80 if you can wait 25 mins with two drops of water as the yougurt and orange cream notes come out.
    Dewars 21 I first rated a 90 but have since downgraded to 8.8, much superior than XR

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  Год назад

      Hey man, nice to hear from you. You make a good argument. I think for me though it’s the aged ness of the XR 21 and the blending art. While I love both I feel the balance of XR outweighs the excellent Sherry casks used. Since the time of this recording I bought a backup Double Double 21. I still have an XR. If I see XR again for $100 in Korea I’ll get another. Here the price is too high!
      Cheers my friend and Merry Christmas!

    I just don’t understand scotch pricing. Canadians typically pay more due to the higher taxes, yet the Dewars 21 is so much cheaper in Canada than where I live in the states. My local liquor store wants $69!!

    so i hate when you call it legs try calling it angels tears. why because when you think whisky in a barrel has an angels share in the glass the angel gets no share lol. it just makes me think wine when you say legs! other than that great review JW 21 XR i felt was a poor example of a blend but then when they can only blend from the 4 regions Deago have its understandable. Dewers on the other hand is interesting zest and heavy sherry fruits chocolate i got a small amount of spice on the finish great for the money.
