I need to rant about the emu war, it's my legacy as an Australian. It all started after the first world war (no i am not kidding). Once the war was over and the recruits returned to australia, they had no jobs, homes or life to return too. All the previous jobs they left behind had to be filled otherwise the market would crash and their homes were either too expensive to own or flat out removed/already sold to another family. To try and remedy this, the Australian government opened massive plots of farmland for soldiers to own and care for. This was great and all, until the emus attacked. The oncoming depression was around the corner and government officials made promises they wouldnt keep - this angered the veterans for very obvious reasons - they went on strike and refused to harvest their crops tanking the wheat stock market. But with all this grain sitting around and no where else for it to go, most of the fields just sat there. A free buffet to these birds. Now, a fun fact about emus. Their top speed is 50/kmh. That with their added weight of around 35kg and their need to stay in groups, meant they had very easy access to these farms with very weak fences. Soon enough, emus desecrated the crops and fences. and what was left behind was eaten by smaller prey (like wild rabbits and hares). The local farmers saw issue to this, because even if they didnt do their jobs, they still needed their crops. So they sent report to the (useless) government who tried to fixe this issue with a gun and cameras... yes, cameras. With everyone going through the great depression, they saw this protentional culling of emus to be a great source of entertainment. I dont know why either, maybe to feel power? but instead of filming a winning fight, they caught a tragic loss. We now return to EMU FUN FACTS: Most of the emus body is made up of its many plums of feathers. This plum is so thick that it acted as a shield to bullets. As well as this, most of the emus important internal organs such as the heart or lungs are placed deep inside the bird. meaning that if you hit its body it wouldnt die either way, not instantly like they expected. It was recorded that a man on the ground said that the only way you could kill these birds was by either shooting it through its open mouth, or through the back of the head. These birds are RELENTLESS, they are IMPOSSIBLE to kill and worst of all. THEY. ARE. SMART. Emus migrate in large groups, not just for family. but for survival. They commonly have the largest bird of the group (standing at nearly 6') keep watch while the others graze. When it spots danger, it calls to the others and they run for it. So theres no chance of sneaking up on these birds (once again, i refer to the top speed of 50/kmh). It got so bad that it resulted in the idea of WELDING A MACHINE GUN TO THE TOP OF A UTE. AGAIN. IM NOT KIDDING, THERES PHOTOS. yet STILL these emus just wouldnt die! They would waste HUNDREDS of rounds of ammunition in hopes to kill only a few! In a report, it was noted down that it would take 10 rounds per confirmed kill. Thats over 9,860 rounds of ammo, for only 986 dead emus. (These guys were only totaling 100 fatalities per week if they were lucky). The man of the hour was Major Meredith, who stepped in to try and command this war. He would go down in our history as a valiant warrior who dared to kill the impossible. And he finished it with a quote truly identifying the horror of these birds- "If we had a millitary division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds it would face any army in the real world... they can face machine guns with the invulnerability of tanks".
The war ended only two months after the campaign was made official. It lasted from november to december 1932. Only a total of 986 birds were killed in what couldve been thousands. But the wheat was ultimately saved. The legacy of this war wouldnt go down in official history books. But it was remembered through a MUSICAL STAGEPLAY, that opened in melbourne 2019. Before becoming an action comedy film simply titled 'The emu war' that premiered at monster fest 2023. This comment was written by memory, but I implore you look into this historical, royal fuck up. And nightmare of life.
