I’m always curious to see where battery technology is gong to be in 5-10 years. I totally think it’s going to change the .. ahem.. landscape .. of our industry. Good video!
Battery technologies come a long way in the past 5 or 10 years imagine where it'll be in 5 or 10 years.. I have a feeling whole fleets are going to be nothing but electric
Brian's Lawn Maintenance Wouldn't be surprised to see a 60+ inch deck battery zero turn and it maybe will be able to last a full day of mowing. That would be sweet!
I've used 80 volt Greenworks chainsaw for years. I'm 80 yr old homeowner and have cut dozens of goodsized trees some approaching 3 ft diameter. My problem now, after Hurricane Michael, I've run out of trees.
Some people love it but there's also none of that vibration feeling in your hands that persists after using a push mower. The products sounds no louder than your average upright vacuum cleaner. There's no engine that has to be winterized. It's quicker to change out the batteries than to fill it with gas, prime and hope it starts up the first time. I have only the cheap gen 1 products but I'm still more than happy with it.
The advancement of battery technology in just the last few years is amazing. Imagine a landscaping crew that didn’t have to hit a gas station every morning and had solar cells on the roof of their trailer always charging something.
It has actually been the implementation of brushless motors in all the tools and mowers that has been the major improvement over the last 24 months. But yes. They are now better than gas in almost all regards. And The solar tool trailer makes that even better.
Would like to have seen it actually cutting some grass. You should try to get one for testing. 20 grand is alot of money. That wasn't even the big mower. Want more video's on these. As always enjoy your video's keep up the great work.
I’ve owned about five push mowers throughout my adulthood. Every single one of them I’ve had problems with or had to scrap because after Ohio winters, they always kick the bucket and I’m not very mechanically inclined. I would try to work on them, but I never could quite get it. Last summer, I bought me a greenworks 60 V push Mower, And after sitting in the garage for winter, it still works incredibly. I’ve been needing a weedeater and for me, it was a no brainer. I went and got me a green works 60 V weedeater to accommodate the battery that came with my mower. I can’t recommend this manufacturer highly enough!
Appreciate the video! Helps me realize the tech is not quite where it needs to be for us to implement, but am excited to see the continued progression!
This video really helped me decide what brand of equipment I’m going to use for my lawn care service company that I’m working to possibly start up next season. I still have some physical healing to do, but I think I’ll be ready by then.
Been using a 40v twin mower for 8 years. I sharpen the blade once or twice a year and it's stupid easy because I can flip it on its side without spilling gas and oil. It's been 100% perfect.
Stan, I was like you, I bought their string trimmer last year and its a 2 speed . I use it for residential and I am not one that keeps my weeds knocked down every day....it crushed the tall weeds!!! Great Video
I've been using greenworks tools for a few years now. (-all brushless- 80v chainsaw, 40v chainsaw, 40v hedge trimmer) and I've been thoroughly impressed. I did however have one 80v battery start loosing life quickly. It was past warranty so I took it apart myself and found two bad cells. I can't remember if they were Sanyo or Panasonic cells, but they were cheap to replace, and the battery was back to new again. All other batteries (about 10 of them) have faired out perfectly fine in the past 3 or 4 years.
If a company like that would come out with an electric garden tractor or sub compact I would be all over that, zero turns are great for mowing but for 15-20 k that's all they can do, if they'd come out with one that could run a tiller, snow blower/plow and some other ground engaging equipment I bet people would jump on it. Love your videos man keep it coming
Masterforce (menards) and greenworks 80v batteries are interchangeable. Been using the gw 18" 80v chainsaw for the last 2 years to cut down and buck up big (14-16") trees. Love it.
I purchase ego a year ago the mover the edger and weed whacked but after seeing your video on green works may I should have waited thanks for showing me the green works product line
A novice here but the electric products have come a long way...I didnt want the hassle of gas/heaviness and I get plenty of compliments from men (after they laughed first 😂) how it cuts sharp n even and how nice my yard is. Very convenient n I have thick St. Augustine grass n I can mow twice a week no problem. Push button n go.
Brought a Ryobi ONE batteries whipper snipper system. Both had issues with the of on switch. Should explain last comment. 1st unit failed on switch as did replacement 2nd unit. That being said. When is green line selling in Australia and are there issues with charging at 240 volt. Aussie Jeff. Like the Vid. Stan
Stan, have you tried their new Optimus Z ztr mower yet? Apparently takes 25 degree slopes now due to the "adaptive traction control" built into the rear wheel "hub motors". Really looking forward to your review and torture test on that mower.
Batteries and electric motors have improved in efficiency in the last few years almost unbelievable how much it has changed. Electric vehicles is an example. After having an electric vehicle I'm impressed
I've been slowly switching from gas to battery machines and so far I'm happy doing so. But I've been looking into getting a snow blower. Really wish you would do a video on Greenworks new SN 220 82v snow blower. I'm gonna pull the trigger before winter and my 2 choices are the Greenworks SN 220 or the Toro Power Clean e21. But there is almost no info on the Greenworks one! Can you help?
Exactly what I was looking for..I saw the greenworks 40v and 60v stuff on sale lately but was wondering if I should wait for the new model..I went ahead and bought trimmer and chainsaw cuz I couldnt pass up price for my mom..its amazing and isnt even brushless which changes everything .. I'm def looking forward to buying gen 2...I think they have 80v as well..I hope u do a longer video in future..after ur videos I use gearwrench for hand tools and milwaukee for power tools and will def be keeping an eye out for greenworks for my outdoor tools
I would like to see how it cuts tall grass just like you've put other mowers through tall grass. The 20,000 price tag is kinda steep and it put it in the range of a diesel powered unit.
Excellent. With the riding mower, is there no replaceable battery? I am assuming it is more like the electric cars, so cannot be easily swapped out etc. Cool stuff, it would be interesting to give it a try.
Interesting to see this as we are dealer for their European brand Cramer. They also supply a lot of machinery for other brands in Europe and America. Take a look at the Stihl battery lawnmowers in the USA and the Greenworks mowers they are identical apart from the colour.
I think I heard that the state of California was already moving that direction. I don’t live there, but they’ll likely be the test dummies for the rest of us
I noticed the Lowe's/Kobalt banner there. Does Greenworks make those ones? Anywho, I'm convinced to get one of those zero turns and one of their multi use trimmers. Hoping to invest in some solar panels to use for charging them in an effort to go green.
I have the string trimmer. Lots of power and run time but the string won't come out. I have to take apart the head and unwind it by hand every time I want to extend the string.
So you’re are a job site and you can drive to the station, fill up, pay $$$$ and be back in 2 minutes? INCREDIBLE! Meanwhile you could have a bank charging off of solar and swap.
I've had the GW 80V push mower, leaf blower and 18" chainsaw for 2 years now. All 3 tools work great. The 4ah battery will mow my whole yard without a problem, and it'll cut some pretty wet and long grass. Easily as strong as my toro mower that I got rid of. I've only made a few cuts with the chainsaw, but it cuts as well as a homeowner grade gas saw. The leaf blower gets used pretty frequently and also does a great job. I had a ryobi 18V blower, and the GW will literally blow the Ryobi away. The only thing I use my gas can for now is my snowblower. Still waiting for a battery powered 2 stage snowblower that can handle my driveway.
I'm a big fan of battery power Lawn equipment. I have just shy of an acre. I do have a gas riding mower, looking forward to seeing a bunch more battery powered riding mowers in the future.
I'm glad you got in touch with them, I've been watching them for a while. I too will enjoy a real-world test (hopefully by you) because run-time will be greatly effected by grass conditions, hills, etc. I am aware of the inefficiencies of gasoline engines as a ratio of energy produced at combustion / motion of the powered object. I know that cars are more than 10% due to advanced driveline components when compared to lawn mowers. I also suspect that residential mowers are likely to be more efficient than commercial due to weight, belt size, tire size, and weight. But, the 90% number seems a bit optimistic (higher than Tesla) until you factor in that all components are directly driven; the only parasitic load is the bearings supporting the shafts. The simplicity alone seems worth the buy-in. No hydraulics, belts or gearboxes? Good stuff. Thanks.
I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on the steering of that mower. I’ve ran a electric zero turn called Mean Green and it’s reaction times for the levers was terrible. There was like a half second lag every time you changed directions.
Electric speed controllers are not easy to make but they should have figured that out for a $20k product. But that said even Tesla does not have the perfect controller yet. The software in my Model 3 has improved the speed controller every couple months. It was originally 0-60 in 4.6s now it 4.2s and they said by Christmas it will be close to 4.0s so even Tesla does not have electric speed controllers perfect yet.
Maybe I missed it, but they have two sets of batteries for two sets of tools. So if I currently have the 40 volt system I can't use those batteries on the 60 volt tools? How often is Greenworks going to change battery design, will there be a new Gen 3 model next year that will force consumers to buy batters that wont work on the current tools they already have?
Loews has all the greenworks batteries marked as amps instead of amp hours. I really hop the small greenworks battery puts out more that 120 watts (60v x 2amps)
Your battery amperage output has to match the motor or be more than the motor to get the rated power of the motor. If your battery can only put out 2 amps it does you no good to have a 50 amp motor.
would love to see how well that mower would do down in central florida , mowing Bahia grass as this is about 75% of grass in Fl. and during summer this grass fast and tall.
Same. I mow a lot of vacant lots in Texas that I have on contract. Some of the lots are just johnson grass and will grow 4' + in a cycle. Curious if the efficiency and quality would transfer and what it would be taking this off your standard biweekly residential cut to mowing an over grown field. At $20K, I can't imagine the replacement parts and service come as cheap as my gas unit when scalping a lot and snagging 6' of rebar. Additionally, at $20K, that would require financing for me and would definitely eat into cash flow given the payments would be $4-500 a month. This would be a big kick during the winter months.
Not a fan of green work! Interested in the electric zero turn but NOT for $20,000 "stated in video" greenworks [website] listed it at $20,500... run time is 4hrs charge time is 12hrs I see a problem there. The zero turn uses more KW then my house does in a month.
It seems like there should be a market for portable charge stations. Like fits in a truck bed or on a trailer. Solar-powered. Wind turbine charging as you move.
I don't see gas tools and mowers making it much longer. All my tools run off batteries except a zero turn mower which aren't quite there yet for residential, IMO. I do still have a Honda push mower that seems to start up every spring on the first pull even when I left gas in it all winter. But I hate everything about dealing with gas tools.
I look forward to owning those riding mowers in the future. BTW the Greenworks 80v line is compatible with the Kobalt 80v line with a small modification. This is a plus for these two companies because no one else is freely doing this. Hopefully one day they'll make an adapter for both to make it easier and it'll literally be a competitive edge that will suit them to their benefit.
I have heard nothing but good things about Greenworks. I know in some markets the eco friendly part would be an EZ sell. Still want to see the riding mower actually cut some grass.
They never talk about the efficiency of the whole power sourcing and delivery systems from mining coal (and/or drilling for natural gas), the delivery of these materials to the power plant, the efficiency losses in generators at the power plant, the loss in transmission lines, the loss in the transformers, and in your home lines, and in your battery charger. Also consider all the energy used and the lost efficiency of mining raw materials (like lithium and copper), the petroleum and raw materials needed for all that plastic in the batteries, and the manufacture and delivery of all of these products to your home garage. If a company wants to talk efficiency, the whole pie has to be considered (for both electric, and gas powered), or it means nothing.
@ 2:08 from the looks at the stone on your exterior chase you should have your fireplace swept. usually with that rust looking color seeping out of the masonry is signs of a creasote/chimney fire. sorry for the non topic related comment. just an observation.
Yes, but what is the recharging times / battery life like in cold conditions on the bigger things like the mowers and lawn equipment? my friend had (HAD) an electric car and the battery life / charging times were reduced / increased almost 5 fold in very cold weather, have they thought of that? And things like chainsaws and mowers with digital displays, erm so now I have to be very careful and don't have a machine that doesnt mind living inside the boot of a car / back of truck on top of a collection of other gear and now I need to take extra sp;ecial care, take an extra hour or so per week cleaning and careing for delecate digital equipment?
Wonder if we will ever have a stumpgrinder that runs off of a battery. Or equipment on the same size as that. Battery equipment is so much better these days.
20K for that cutter... I don't know. I absolutely love the innovation and how environmentally friendly it is but I need to see a real test to give it a fair opinion.
Environmentally friendly? You obviously have not thought hard enough on that one....lol. Gas pollutes the air. Batteries make dirt toxic for generations.
Yea because electricity is not produced and distributed by burning some kind of fuel right? Ohh yea it is! Environment friendly mowers are them old push mowers that was powered by you pushing them. Stop fooling yourself.
First!... Not a big fan of battery powered equipment... I am definitely old school when it comes to landscape equipment!... Needs a solar panel on the back of the mower plate to supplement charging!
A Generation or two from now will be making fun of us for having one of those ole' gasoline engines in our vehicles for sure!! Amazing how far battery tech has came....good find DirtMunky!!
Pretty sure it will make lawn care businesses more profitable. Also being able to run earlier in the morning and later into the night because of the reduced noise.
I do wish that Stihl would make a zero-turn electric mower. This is such a new concept that a guy has a hard time making up his minde about which way to go in the electric arena... I am on borde my wife and I just have to decide weather to go EGo, Royobi or green works.
I actually was waiting to purchase the 52" greenworks Ztr until I learned the price of these things. Price has to come down for the public to jump on board.

I imagine that soon we'll see some homeowners associations start to require battery powered mowers and trimmers. That will create a niche for someone.
I think I heard that the state of California was already moving that direction. I don’t live there, but they’ll likely be the test dummies for the rest of us

You are absolutely right. Thats the real test there.
I have the string trimmer. Lots of power and run time but the string won't come out. I have to take apart the head and unwind it by hand every time I want to extend the string.

Would love for you to get hands on the commercial riding lawn mower for next season & see how it runs & if your guys’ like it.
Cheers
Am very impressed with the dethatcher. Bought the plug in model. Very affordable. Good piece of equipment.
That's great Ira, thanks for viewing
Sounds like a great product I want one
I look forward to owning those riding mowers in the future. BTW the Greenworks 80v line is compatible with the Kobalt 80v line with a small modification. This is a plus for these two companies because no one else is freely doing this. Hopefully one day they'll make an adapter for both to make it easier and it'll literally be a competitive edge that will suit them to their benefit.
Mower is bad ass and with a enclosed trailer with solar panels will charge the batteries but how good are they on steep hills
Good job keep doing the good videos
Thanks David, will do!
I've had my greenworks 40 volt mower for at least 6 years. I'll never go back to gas. All my out for power tools are now battery powered.
I had my Greenworks twin blade 20” mower for 4 years. It made me such a fan that I upgraded to the 60v 21”!
Very interesting honestly
Thanks Victor!
For home use, I am definitely intrigued. I love the old school, but tired of gas and gas/oil mix. Especially interested in blowers and weed eaters.
I did commercial for 4-5 years and I switch to electric for small/medium scale, working pretty well so far.
you are right Stanley, they seem to be switched on inovationally, (i might have just made up a word!!) and have a good product.
I like new words. I make them up all the time!
Do you have a lawn tractor in the works?
Hope they do great in business
Stan can you look into those multi one front end loader
I would love to try one of these in a 42 inch model, I would love to put this mower to the test.
Disparagy is my new favorite word! 3:13 I love this channel awesome content!
Wonder if we will ever have a stumpgrinder that runs off of a battery. Or equipment on the same size as that. Battery equipment is so much better these days.
Can you try a kubota zero tern stan
20K for that cutter... I don't know. I absolutely love the innovation and how environmentally friendly it is but I need to see a real test to give it a fair opinion.
Environmentally friendly? You obviously have not thought hard enough on that one....lol. Gas pollutes the air. Batteries make dirt toxic for generations.
Yea because electricity is not produced and distributed by burning some kind of fuel right? Ohh yea it is! Environment friendly mowers are them old push mowers that was powered by you pushing them. Stop fooling yourself.
I wouldn't get one for being environmentally friendly. I would get one since electricity is cheaper than gasoline. For me it's about cutting costs.
Most trailers I see with zero turn mowers on them don't have the mower tied down lol.
I love my Greenworks equipment!
Where's the link for the zero-turn?
How long does it take to recharge the commercial mower from lowest usable to 100%
First!... Not a big fan of battery powered equipment... I am definitely old school when it comes to landscape equipment!... Needs a solar panel on the back of the mower plate to supplement charging!
I appreciate the comments, thanks Andrew!
are any of these gen2 products available for purchase today?
A Generation or two from now will be making fun of us for having one of those ole' gasoline engines in our vehicles for sure!! Amazing how far battery tech has came....good find DirtMunky!!
Thank you !
What happened to the Greenworks 80 volt line? Is it abandoned?
Pretty sure it will make lawn care businesses more profitable. Also being able to run earlier in the morning and later into the night because of the reduced noise.
I have a Green works trimmer with attachments, I love it, quiet starts all the time I have a part time lawn business I mow 23 accounts
I do wish that Stihl would make a zero-turn electric mower. This is such a new concept that a guy has a hard time making up his minde about which way to go in the electric arena... I am on borde my wife and I just have to decide weather to go EGo, Royobi or green works.
Remember no wheelies!
I actually was waiting to purchase the 52" greenworks Ztr until I learned the price of these things. Price has to come down for the public to jump on board.
