I'm very new to isopod culture and the great thing about my Magic Potions is that so far they're actually the most active and visible of the ones I've acquired - more so than my various Porcellio laevis - and are more than happy to emerge in daylight especially when dried shrimp are in the offing. Beautiful little animals!
Magic potions are unusual in several respects…I have heard this from various people, that they are very bold…mine appear fairly bold for an Armadillidium, but nothing like some of my other species. I wonder if this depends on the specific strain?
Thanks Rus good luck with your love potion. I got some about a month ago. They are hard to find but I’m just caring for them as usual. Set up like yours. I offer crab meal. Which is shells. Then pulverized chicken egg shells azomite. Then a mix of plant based chow with pea powder brown rice flour kelp and several other adjuncts. Then a pile of dry anchovy powder. As a buffet they don’t seem to care for veggies or fruit so far. I’m getting some butternut squash sweet potatoes to add. Bananas mold to fast. I feed Saturday and Tuesday or Wednesday. This seems to make most of my collection grow and several are reproducing. I started in Isopods in March this year so I keep out of my hospital bed and up doing something. I am also posting on RUclips but haven’t learned editing yet but going to soon. Thanks again Ricky 💃🏼🕺🏼🎸😎🐈⬛🍂✌️
I found a couple in the wild once but was never able to get them going. Such a gorgeous morph! Got to watch the new Mandalorian trailor as the intro ad before the big feature here!
That’s so cool that you found some in the wild! Too bad they were much like my first batch. I feel honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Mandalorian!! 😊👍

Hi. I'm late here but I just need to know, do golden Slano vulgare breed fast? Or how fast or slow do they breed? And how moist should the enclosure be?
As long as they have a readily available hydration station, they should be fine with regards to an arid enclosure. They cannot climb smooth, clean, dry surfaces, but they can climb scratched, dusty, dirty, rough, and in some cases, damp surfaces. They can also climb the silicone sealant used in glass aquariums. A lid is usually best, but as long as unwanted creatures can be kept out and the isopods have no way to climb out, AND you can keep the hydration station moist, a lid is not a necessity.
Pleasant coincidence as I was looking at your photo of Magic Potions on Instagram yesterday. I'd like some of these little dudes once my "ban" is lifted. Meanwhile I have some baby rats settling in, I've kept them for >30yrs. And new project - a terrarium to build.
The wonderful world of rats 😝 lol. No. But I do know some people who have bioactive substrate for rats. Set up like a gerbilarium. Allows natural burrowing behaviour. My terrarium will just be plants and custodians.
@@Aquarimax awesome thanks! I'm thinking, that once my gem mix colony is large enough, I'd like to separate out all of the magic potions, oranges, etc... And then do some selective breeding and crossbreeding Addition: I also got some Klugii Dubrovniks and I'd love to breed a population of high reds.
@@Aquarimax hey Russ if you don't mind, I know this is a lot to ask, but is there any way you could help me identify the species I've captured? I posted on the isopods FB group and the subreddit, but the answers have been so far inconclusive. I'm uploading a video right now on some of the specimens I've caught, they're brown but some are also white. About 3 mm in length maximum. Edit: the video is uploaded.
@@Aquarimax thanks for the help, seem like I was wrong and it's actually 2-3 different species. One is all white, with a dark gray line, another is brown bodied with a more elongated shape, and maybe a third, with the body just like that of the first, but with a cream-white body. I'll try uploading each of the types soon.
For all isopods, is any hard wood pellets perfect for the substrate other than oak or alder like maybe maple? I know maple is a slightly safer wood to humans than oak and alder.

They almost look like they could glow in the dark.

Hit them with blacklight in a future video, they might light up like scorpions!
Nothing like opening up RUclips and seeing you posted
That makes me smile! 😊

A question bothered me a lot: can I use Camphor bark for the housing of my pill bugs?
I am not sure, I don’t have any wxoerience with camphor trees. The plant does have some toxicity...

Hi. I'm late here but I just need to know, do golden Slano vulgare breed fast? Or how fast or slow do they breed? And how moist should the enclosure be?
They are moderate breeders. They take some time to mature, large litters. Keep one side moist, one less so.
@@Aquarimax late reply but I noticed a few mancae already!
How would the Magic Potions do in an arid enclosure? Are they escape artists? Would I need a lid for their enclosure?
As long as they have a readily available hydration station, they should be fine with regards to an arid enclosure. i had the EXACT same problem with Rubber Duckies. I could only afford 4 at 18usd$ each and they just never bread. All my other species are thriving.

As someone who is interested in maybe atarting an isopods colony, I have to ask: what does one do in the event that your colony gets overcrowded?
Generally I end up selling enough that it hasn’t been a problem. Splitting the culture is an option. Something that eats isopods is an option too.
What would happen if you bred a magic potion with another A. vulgare morph? Can they even interbreed?
They can! It totally depends on the compatibility of the genetics, but A. vulgare ‘Gem Mix’ is a mix of various other A. vulgare morphs. 👍🏽

Does Magic Potion Isopod like to burrow into the substrate?
How can I control spring tails in my wormery please.
You could introduce predatory mites, but springtails are beneficial in a wormery.
For all isopods, is any hard wood pellets perfect for the substrate other than oak or alder like maybe maple?
