    I've been experimenting making sprays today. The ones I made previously were with water and food color liquid from a supermarket and really cheap. They are ok but they don't dry well.
    I finally found we can get rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) on ebay. I tried today with the same food colorings and also other things like mica powder, gelatin, paint etc. and still the cheap food colorings and food colour pastes give the best results with the alcohol and they dry almost instantly

      Angie Beaumont what are food pastes and where can you buy it? Did you use both food coloring and the paste?

    TFS your technique and vendor links. I think Rit Dyes would work and may be more readily accessible for many crafters. Any fabric dye would be good really. I read that Pysanky dyes, like what you're using, are good for textile dyeing. I know they are used for highly-detailed painted eggs too.

    I do a lot of crafting and have tried many different techniques. One suggestion is to buy some bbs, and one to the bottles. It will help with mixing. Especially if you add the makeup powder to the inks.

    The vinegar is probably to set the dye on the eggs.

  • @JulianaBeasley1967

    Thanks so much for getting back to me. I will only mix a little at a time because I don't have the space or enough ball jars to mix the whole lot of it. I think the vinegar might be a good idea or maybe to add a bit of tea tree oil or a bit of alcohol because it will help preserve the mixture. I think I have heard that water mixed can go stagnant and bad. And I will definitely use distilled water. I think that might be an important step. I am really thankful that I found this video and you. I probably will do what I have done with the few Dylusion's sprays that I own. I spray them with a fixative before putting any other layers on top. Thanks again. I will share this video with other.

    • @sparemarbles2012
      @sparemarbles2012  10 лет назад

      You're welcome Juliana :) Just fyi, mine have been mixed and sitting in the ball jars with water and just a touch of vinegar for over 3 years, and they haven't gotten stagnant or gone bad! I'm using those for sprays and to die seam binding and laces and such, but I did get more of the powders and am mixing little bits at a time right into my spray bottles with just rubbing alcohol. Tea tree oil? Not familiar with that - intrigued! Hugs d.

    • @JulianaBeasley1967
      @JulianaBeasley1967 10 лет назад

      Hi! What is your name? Friend me on FB. Or I will find you. It's funny you mentioned seam binding because I just spent last week using DIY alcohol inks to color mine and now that I know about the Ukranian way I will try that out when they arrive. Be careful with alcohol in your sprays. A lot of people suggest it, but the fumes can be pretty toxic.. make sure to open the windows. Why aren't you going to just stick with H2O? Is there a reason? And are you mixing the power straight with alcohol? Hmmm.. very interesting. Anyway, back to the tea tree oil.. I have heard that it is a good preservative for mixes like this so, it will keep well. Who knows.. ? Maybe your vinegar helped keep them fresh or maybe it's not big deal. I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks again so much. Yes, I just bought some more seam binding and will definitely give this a whirl. Do you have any plans for the seam binding. I just made some flowers and will use them for tags. But, always up for new ideas. Thanks again. Juliana

    Hi there, can you explain what the purpose is in putting gesso on the paper first? I see people do that often and it looks to me like it makes the paper a little more water proof but in the mean time it appears that it runs more than just staying in a pretty spray pattern. Also, do you think there would be a problem with the nozzle clogging if you added some glitz to it. Like Perfect Pearls or the pretty shimmer eyeshadow powder. I have made a lot of alcohol inks and put in different types of shimmer but I also used acrylic paint and I have had at least 50% clog up and once those bottles clog there is not unclogging them. I feel like it is probably more so because of the paint versus the shimmer addition.

    • @lechatbotte.
      @lechatbotte. 8 лет назад

      +Lori McGarrity Gesso is used when you don't want the color to bleed through your paper. It's more important on thin paper as in Bible journaling. After reading and watching, it seems about 2/3 water, 1/3 alcohol with they ink, when using ink works well. A good blend between spray and fast drying.

    • @ArtsyLadyCrafter
      @ArtsyLadyCrafter 5 лет назад

      I think to keep the nozzle clear you have to detach it and spray it out then spray water through it. That should help. Yes I do think the powdered metallic pigments cause less clogging.

    Wow, thanks you so much!! You get a total thumbs up for this. I have searched high and low for the right mixture to make colored sprays and these seem to be the most saturated I have seen. I do have one question. how permanent do you think these are.. are they like water colors that might if gotten wet again after they dry move around or will they stay put once they are dry? Do you suggest a fixative spray after using them? I know that the Dylusions won't stay put and you have to put a fixative down on them if you want to apply any other wet mediums to the page and I wonder if this would be the same. I am sold and I am buying the packets now. Viva The Ukraine!! Peace in the Ukraine and more colorful Ukranian Easter Eggs and dye!! Thanks!!

    • @sparemarbles2012
      @sparemarbles2012  10 лет назад

      I'm so glad you found this useful Juliana! If you mix the dies with water, they will definitely be reactive with another wet medium; if you use rubbing alcohol instead of water, they will be much less reactive when reactive, but I can't say how permanent they'll be with different mediums. You're going to get several bottles of spray out of one packet of the dye, so heck, for the price, don't be afraid to just play and see what works best for you! Have fun and TFW :) Hugs d.

    Thanks so much for sharing. I can see a great possibility to make numerous yummy colours at a much lower price than buying Dylusions (plus I only have 9 colours available where I get them). I'm glad to see the site is still up. Unfortunately the shipping is expensive UNLESS I choose the no insurance and the no tracking. It's worth the risk though, as Dylusions cost me around 7-8$ a bottle. LOVE this video. You're a genius! Hugs, Fiona xox

      G-G- Gaia You're very welcome Fiona! I'm so glad you found it useful! I've started using rubbing alcohol instead of water with them, and works great! I'm surprised the shipping is so much since a package of all of the dyes would be small and light weight :( But if you decide to get them, it's totally worth it, because a little bit goes a looooooooooooooong way! Have fun and TFW :) Hugs d.

    • @GGGaia
      @GGGaia 9 лет назад

      Oh the postage isn't bad sweetie, as long as I choose the option with no tracking/insurance, and then it costs just $13.05 plus whatever the 16 set of dyes costs me (I think it's $17.50). The insured option is way too much though and I can't really afford it, so yeah, that's the risk I was talking about!
      Thanks for the tip about using alcohol with them too! Hugs, Fiona xox

      Thank you Nancy :) The colors are fantastic! The RIT dyes are more expensive, plus you'd still have to buy the spray bottles on top of that. Being made for fabrics, I don't know how they'll work on papers. I'm sure the Paas Easter egg dyes will work too, but, again, more expensive in the long run, and not nearly as many colors to start with! These can be diluted down with more water for more pastel colors if you want them :) TFW :) Huge Hugs xx d.

      There are health concerns about spraying alcohol (which is why it's inadvisable to use Adirondack alcohol inks for this kind of spray) I'd just skip the vinegar and do without.

    Hello, I am so new to this. Why would the gesso be needed? Does the gesso really make a big difference? You brush the gesso on the card stock, dry then use for the inkling? Oh, I'm thinking backgrounds for cards not journal paper. Something to stamp on after these background have been made. TY

    Love this video. TFS... Such a great idea. I know what I am buying in the next few weeks :)
    Have you tried adding less dye to the water for a lighter effect ? or is the color still same as it was when adding more dye to the mix as you showed in the video? Just curious on this to see if the 1 color could be lighter or it would stay the same.

    • @sparemarbles2012
      @sparemarbles2012  9 лет назад

      So glad you found it useful! Yes, you can use just a super tiny bit of the dye to get lighter color, but I think I would go with full color and then lift the color with a paper towel or baby wipe for a lighter effect. That way you won't have to mix 2 bottles of the same color for different intensities! TFW! Hugs d.

    Wow, you are also a maddy scientist. I'm just wondering if the colors fade with time. Good job, Charlie Brown. lol lol Hugs, Ayeshaah.

      Lol! Yes, I am also a maddy scientist Ayeshaah! If I can figure out how to get what I want for less $, I'm all over it! These inks are made for dying blown eggs to be able to keep them for years, so I don't expect they'll be fading! Awwww, shucks Linus, lol! TFW :) Hugs d.

      She possibly ment Pearl ex pigments. Generally it's makeup powder with that has a shine or glitter effect. I and my family cosplay. Plus we do many different hobbies and creative crafting. I've used makeup powder with certain glues to make rub and buff, or with acrylic paint to add special effects.
