The tune "Comin' Home Baby" was composed by Ben Tucker, bass player, who recorded it with Herbie Mann on the 1961 album Herbie Mann at the Village Gate. Ben Tucker was born December 13, 1930, so he was 30 or 31 when the album was recorded. I don't know who wrote the lyrics for the Mel Torme version.
Wow! Mel Torme' could really sing! I mean I always knew he was a singer, bit before my time which is why I didn't realize what an absolute talent he was . Thank you for posting this.
Loved Mel Torme's voice and this song always cracked me up. It is so inconclusive. It is as open-ended as Glenn Campbell's, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." These songs are a lot of talk about probability. We don't know if Mel ever gets home or Glen ever leaves for Phoenix much less gets there. Good luck, boys!
I remember Harry Anderson on Night Court was a huge fan of Mel Tormé...his character took a lot of heat for it, but as far as I'm concerned he knew something none of them did. Tormé was ultra cool and had more swagger than any artist of that time. Love This Post!
Interesting how the musicians around this era actually had a technical understanding of music. You don't hear today's musicians talking about those aspects of their music.
And I'll add that I love how Torme didn't feel an obligation or arrogance to dumb-it-down for the television audience. Today's media talk to audiences as if we're all special needs.
Mel was an incredible talent with a good heart. I feel so bad the way his wife divorced him and his life turned out so stressful and sad. I always thought they would stay married forever, they seemed so in love.

MEL BABY
Mel is my favorite male jazz singer but the female background singers were an important part of this record
WOW is all you can say

Top secret de 1984 parodia a Mel Torme😅😅😅😅😅
You can tell he was influence by the Jazz scene.
He's the GINCHIEST
Yes, Mel was a great talent without question.
However, this tune sounded MUCH better when Herbie played it.
Big influence on Trent Reznor.
I I’ve read that this song was nicked by none other than John Lennon for his song ‘I want you ‘ on Abbey Road.
Holy crap you're right! Slow it down and it's the melody!
