Thank you for another great 28mm lens comparison video. Over the decades, I have used 28mm lenses primarily for scenics, landscapes, architecture, large group portraits, environmental portraits, and vacation/travel. I used them on full-frame 35mm Nikon, Contax, Pentax, and Fuji film bodies. Here are the 28mm lenses I have used: Asahi 28mm f/3.5 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar (produced high quality images) Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS (52mm filter) (produced high quality images) Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 pre-AIS (52mm filter) (used with reversal ring and bellows to produce high reproduction ratio macro images) Nikkor 28mm f/4 PC (72mm filter) (used for architectural images and panoramic scenic images) Vivitar 28mm f/2.8 lens with TX mount (58mm filter) (produced high quality images) Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 lens with M42 mount (67mm) Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 lens with TX mount (58mm) (produced the lowest quality images) Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon T* ZF 2 (58mm filter) (use for night scenics) Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 Biogon (46mm filter) (use with Contax G1 rangefinder) I have also owned and used the following 28mm equivalent prime lenses: Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 (46mm filter) on Olympus micro 4/3 digital mirrorless Nikkor 18mm f/3.5 on APS-C digital SLR (72mm filter) Mamiya-Sekor C 50mm f/4.5 (77mm filter) on RB67 6x7cm medium format SLR Fujinon fixed 65mm f/5.6 lens (67mm filter) on GSW690 III 6x9cm medium format rangefinder Fujinon 90mm f/5.6 SWD #0 Shutter (82mm filter) on 4x5 inch view camera
That’s great to hear. I have a second video on 5 more, and I’ve done some more testing. Almost all of them get the job done and I enjoy getting them at great prices!
FWIW, I recommend taking a look at the Olympus 28mm f/3.5 and the Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8. Having also shot with a Nikkor 28/2.8 AI-S, Olympus 28/2.8, Sigma 28/2.8, and others, the Oly 28/3.5 and Pentax-A 28/2.8 are currently my favourite 28mm legacy lenses. Thank you for the enjoyable content :)
Nice. I'd love to get my hands on the Oly, plua a Canon and a Minolta for a comparison video . . . I'll have to check out that Pentax-A 28 too. I've used the Pentax-M 28 f/2.8 a lot, and was disappointed with a couple of versions. But today, the Pentax-A 35 f/2 and 50 f/1.4 are two of my favorites, so if I ever come across a 28, I'll definitely buy it and let you all know! Thanks so much for watching!!
Interesting comparison, I have the Vivitar 28mm 2.5 & about 6 other 28mm vintage lenses. My favourite would be the Topcor 28mm closely followed by the Minolta 28mm 3.5. I have found a lot of variation between copies & I just keep the best ones. Another very good lens is the 30mm 3.5 Penticon which is a later version Meyer Optic Lydith. When I get the time I am going to set up a similar test for all the 28's I own. Good vid, keep up the good work.
Thank you for this excellent informative review. I am just an amateur but very much interested in vintage lenses. Fun to use and have been amazed by what it can produce!
Thank you for watching! It is all about the fun and there is much to be had. By the way, those amazing results… YOU are producing them! Good luck and keep shooting!
The Takumar is so much fun to shoot with, I wanted to keep it on my camera. But that Nikkor is a beast. Best $60 I ever spent :-) and more than I typically pay to be honest.
Je suis amoureux des objectifs vintage alors bien sûr j'aime vos revues qui permettent de choisir en connaissance de cause.Very very nice review for vintage lenses lovers.tks . Bonne journée.
Monsieur bonjour Avez vous envisagé de tester les zoom dans la plage 80-200 ou 70- 210 , avez vous un model à me conseiller ? Have any advice for a good quality and light 80-200 vintage zoom. Thanks you in advance
@@rodolphenavarro4253 Tamron makes a really nice 70-210 that is so inexpensive, and crazy sharp for what it is . . . here are a few photos I took years ago: flic.kr/s/aHsm26rDJL
Not sure, I’ve never come across a Leica R lens for cheap… I’ve had an adapter on my shelf for years just waiting :-) so when the time comes I’ll be the first to know!
The Nikkor is the better lens in my opinion, if compared to the Leica 2.8/28 v1. The Leica v2 is insanely expensive (around 2000€/$) and supposed to be stellar. I don't think that it will be much better than the Nikkor, though. The Leica R 2.8/28 v1 (my copy at least) has wonderful colors, nice bokeh, but is lagging behind the others in sharpness. It takes f/8 for the corners to be sharp. Stopped down to f/8 or f/11 it's a very capable landscape lens. The 4 best vintage 28mm lenses I've tested are the Nikkor 2.8/28 Ai-S (or AI - IMHO about as good), the Zeiss Contax Distagon 2.8/28 the Zeiss Contax G 2.8/28 Biogon (with PCX Filter) and the Pentax K 3.5/28. My budget choices would be the Oly 3.5/28 and the Canon nFD 2.8/28.
@@rolft.4401 Yeah, your spot on. I've tested (loaned) a Leica R 28mm f2.8 (E55) against a Nikkor 28mm f2.8 Ais and found the Nikkor to be at least as sharp if not slightly sharper. But its really really pixel peeping to the max. In the end though I've found my self using a "cheap", Tapered Chinon 28mm f2.8 more for video. It's sharp, and has decent quality for my humble needs.
Your videos are convincing me to get the Nikkor 😂 I'm curious though, if I was to go up in budget to the ~$120 it currently costs, how would it compare to others in its price range?
Hi David, thank you for watching! The shots are taken with a 24 MP Sony A7II (full frame) and the parts that are video are shot with an A6500 (Sony APS-C)… thanks!
How they usually say it? "First one!!!" lol Wathing now in 360p, ha ha ha. RUclips still converts it, probably. Better to watch later, when it's done. (so why the hell are you writing it here in the first place, then - someone thought). :D Just bragging

The Yashica 28mm ML is much better than the DSB.
My favourite 28mm 2.8 is a Ricoh P.
Thank you for this video. That nikon is sharp. I was hoping the takumar to be sharper with its coatings.

Here’s my question, how good is the Nikkor to the Leica R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit?
