Dracaena masoniana (Whale fin Snake Plant) - 266 of 365

  • After seeing many different species of snake plant, I realize that there are quite a few that look like the whale fin, though perhaps not as wide. My cutting has been giving me quite a bit of offsets, even in slightly lower light conditions away from my northeast facing window, which just shows how prolific and forgiving these plants are. This is #266 of "365 Days of Plants" -and yes, we surpassed the number in which we have less than 100 plants left!
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

As wonderful as it is that houseplants have become the *it* home decor since 2019, especially among younger people... the insane price markup on ALL plants is crushing lifelong plant enthusiasts looking to add to our collections or replace a beloved specimen. We're going to have to focus on propagation/division/cuttings to share with one another - tho even this is difficult because Etsy and other person-to-person sites are swamped with novice bargain hunters. Grateful to wonderful vloggers like this and Planterina for making our vocation & avocation so exciting and fun - hopefully in a year or so when everyone is saturated with houseplants folks will be giving them away for free!

I have this plant. It started with just 2 leaves when I bought from my local plant broker about 2 months ago. Now, I got 2 additional new plants from the original one as it pushed out 3 more leaves. I lucked out when I bought this plant 😊 I love my whale fin.

I love that Home Depot has been getting in some rarer plants or just harder to find plants, even Lowe's has been getting a better selection of houseplants. I have a moonshine Sansevaria that I wanted for a long time, but as far as the others I would like I haven't seen them, but I will keep my eye out and keep looking at Home Depot and be hopeful they get some in, I am just not willing to pay a high price for one, I want one but would like it to be reasonable, and anything over 20.00 is not reasonable. Thanks Summer, see you tomorrow.

I agree Holly - Home D has been buying from Costa Farms (Angel Plants) and the more we enjoy the rare or exotic, the more they will be bred & brought to market. Let’s also include medicinal & food plants in our demand to help preserve them for the future.

What a coincidence! I just bought this plant yesterday. Usually nurseries here / online sell it at an insane price, but I managed to get a pot (three stems) at Ringgit Malaysia 15 (approx USD5+)! Though they are now not in the best condition (terrible soil situation), I believe I will be able to give them a more comfortable new home :)

I was able to buy (at a much reduced price) a specimen that had some damage but was still 24" tall. I divided it and it has
grown slowly indoors in medium light. The smaller division is in more intense light and recently as "shot" a leaf that is now
20" tall in the space of two months or less. I was astonished I was advised, "water once a month and leave it alone." That seems to work tho I will add an inch or so of new cactus mix as a top dressing next month (Feb) . Thanks for the scale tips, etc.

I was happy to wait as long as I got one but the excuses were moving greenhouses, no social media/customer service, the whale fins grew too big in shipping to greenhouse (which is weird, they grow so slow!).
