HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
- #34 of "365 Days of Plants" has become a beloved (and sometimes hard to find) houseplant commonly known as "Swiss cheese plant" but its proper scientific name is Monstera adansonii...Don't confuse this with its other relative: Monstera deliciosa, (which will be a topic for a separate episode)!
I'll go over care tips for this plant, including the story behind these big leaves!
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Whoa!!! I’ve never seen such a huge adonsonii! Beautiful! thanks for sharing.
I appreciate how you don't have any filler words... you are exact, knowledgeable and succinct... and so are your videos! (Heard about you from Laura @GardenAnswer 😊)
when I see these large ones it definitely makes me wish I had my own tropical greenhouse, what a beautiful specimen you have!
This is one of the top 3 on my plant wish list! 💚💚💚 So glad you covered this beauty! And the size of your leaves are impressive to the point of jealousy! 💚💚💚💚
I finally got mine this week 🥰🌱 I love you summer 🎀 thanks for all these videos, they help so much people in more than one way. Not just for planting tips, trust me.
My little guy just put out its first leaf which split into a new stem as well and then a teeny tiny new little stem is growing up from the soil! And then we have my deliciosa who has put out a brand new big and fully split leaf for the first time as well as a rooted cutting. So both rooted cuttings have developed into full plants now and I’m so happy!
I have one in my house too and I just love this plant so much. It grows really well and it's so amusing to watch these leaves.
Beautiful plant, I currently don't have the room for a large plant, but someday I hope I will. Loving this series, thanks Summer.
I've seen adansonii before, but never that size! Stunning! 💚 Thanks for the video, loved learning about this bb!
Jeanne Eguizabal I’ve learned there are three forms of adonsonii this looks like round leaf form (it has the largest leaves)
Monstera lechleriana
Omg those leaves are huge! I’m having major plant envy!
ohmygod thank you so much for this. I got mine 2 weeks ago and it was not looking good but it grows new leave now. Thank you so much for the tips!!!
i had one of these once , i was not a fan of this one so i gave it away, i opted for the smaller leaf ones, the small swiss cheese vine, only mine never developed holes in the leaves, they are simply solid haha, i still love it and it got huge, so i have the other half growing in water, cant wait for the roots, to pop
Wow!! The leaves are huge, gorgeous plant!
Hi Summer ~ this beauty is at the top of my wish list! I've never seen a picture of one with leaves that big. Thank you for sharing!
Sandy G I randomly found one at my local Lowe’s today. Couldn’t believe my luck!!! There were only about four or five of them!
Thank you Michele! I'll have to check our Lowe's. Have a great day!
My gosh that is beautifully huge 😍 I have mine in the window it's tripled in size since getting it I've cut it back 3 times in the last 6 months... 1 of my favourite plants by far 👍
I'm not sure if you have, but it'd be nice to have a video on fertiliser and what you mean when you mention the numbers. I don't understand that bit.
She said in her last houseplant basics video that she's working on one!
Yay my favorite plant! Those leaves are massive!
I just got my first Adansonii. I never thought I wanted this plant and then I saw it in person and I had to have it ! Thanks for another great video.
I think it's a Monstera adansonii subsp. klotzschiana (Schott)
It's native here in Brazil.
Your timing is amazing. I saw the name for this plant with no picture so now I know what it looks like. It's beautiful. Thanks.
Where u found the monstera
@@vicentemunoz4264 On a florist website in Toronto Canada.
@@barbll000 wow to far ai am in veags thank you barbara
@@vicentemunoz4264 try a Google search. Most often the USA has way more selection than Canada :)
@@barbll000 i will thanks
Instantly went on my wishlist as soon as I saw it😀
I never knew adansonii can get that huge 🙀
Monstera lechleriana
Looks like monstera acacoyaguensis to me
it cant. That is not an adansonii
@@lucianobrancato5975 I’m totally agreed. It’s Monstera Acacoyaguensis 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼.
@@MCHNGRL03 it can if you let the regular one climbs. Mine reached 11” long leaf but I agree this specific species in the video is not Adansonii. I believe it is an acacoyagensis
I first saw this plant in Puerto Rico, in my aunts backyard. I took a cutting and got it threw; pre 911 so many many years ago. I still have many babies from the mother plant, that now, is in ok shape.
They looks so good, I have small version but it takes so long for growing new leafs.
Gorgeous monstera! 💜
Great video always Summer! Please talk about how to care for a silver dollar vine or xerosicyos dangunyi. I just got one this weekend and i dont know how to care for it.
beautiful plant, thanks for the video Summer.
So beautiful
Hi Summer.. as usual very informative video.. thanks for sharing the care tips on this plant.. I would appreciate if you could include some of these houseplants in this type video.. for us beginners, we usually buy Majesty Palm, Areca Palm, Norfolk pine, Dracenea , philo hope etc from the hardware stores like home depot and Lowe’s.. thanks again !! Happy planting !!❤️
I love watching mine vine.
It seems to love the sun by my window.
Only 3 leaves in its second year, wow that is so slow, in blown away with it taking that long
Cool that you got it from A botanical garden 🤗
Wow nice information 👍👌😍
LOVE summer BUT drink everytime she says particular plant and you’ll be dead ♥️
LOL
That and "well draining soil" on any plant vid
Drink what particular beverage though? And as a particularly well draining human, I think I will be fine
Don't forget "ambient"
This plant is on my list. Thank you for the information!🌿
I just got this one yesterday!!!
I have this plant but a brown spot with a yellow ring is on the edge of a few leaves, is that a fungus or bacterial problem? If so, does anyone know how to treat it or if I should just cut off the leaf?
Hoping you do an episode for monstera deliciosa soon!
what soil do you use for your monstera adonsonii? this one has been a finnicky plant for me. I've been using an orchid bark, organic dirt(black gold) perilite, cactus mix for it and for 4 months it was doing okay, and now it's yellowing again. i water all my plants using zero water- water filter systems,so, 0 tds. am I missing something here? thanks for this awesome video Summer Rain!
This happened to mine and I had the exact same mix!!! I took the plant out and even though it wasnt fully root bound I discovered that when I repotted it it still had a huge clump of soil in around the roots that was damp damp (not removed from when replanting from nursery pot)all the soil mix I added was drainng perfectly... it had become waterlogged so I removed all this soil and untangled the roots to make sure none remained...and refilled it with my own mix (same as yours) I also cut of the two yellowest leaves and treated the wound with ground cinnamon to protect the the plant. I did this 2 weeks ago if even and already my monstera has perked up and thrown out 3 new leaves!!!! Check the roots that's my best recommendation. Hope this helps xx
@@nibiruthecat7652 I've been having this plant in a mix of compost with a little bit of perlite, vermiculite and peat, a very reach and drining soil, otherwise the roots rot. I water them frequently but superficially, lets say every day in our very hot summers and thorougly only once a week. In winters just once a week. But go this way only if you have it outdoors; if you have it inside your home, reduce the frequence and the amount of water. Remember the roots rots if they receive too much water, no matter what kind of mix you use.
Like most plants, she likes rain, so if it is possible, give her a shower over its leaves once in a while. If you want it grows vertically, you should add a tutor to help it, and then, when it grows enough, support it on a wall, the roots will adhere to it. If it is located in the appropiate spot it can became a large plant, 2 or even 3 meters tall, with a circunference of a meter and a half, each leaf can be half meter itself! It's so beautiful!!!
@@lat7805 awesome!! Thanks for the advice! 💚 x
Do you find it needs a lot of humidity? I know they grow out in super humid areas but was wondering if they will completely hate it indoors if I don’t have a humidifier.
Added to my list
i really love this monstera adansonii, one of my favorite house plant because it grows new leaf every 1 or 2 weeks. 😍😍😍💚💚💚
Maybe you can help....I have a Monstera Adansonii. There are multiple plants in the pot. I am wondering when I repot it should I put all the ariel roots towards the middle to help it climb? If that makes sense? Thank you! Great video!
Thank you for your videos! I have a peculiar question: got my adansonii last month and, judging by three new leaves, it feels good, but I keep finding droplets of water on the foliage. Do the adansonii "sweat" or maybe my room humidity is a bit too high?
I dunno if you've found your answer yet or not, but if it is t high humidity its probably just "sweat". Through a process called transpiration plants can release water through there leaves. I notice my Pothos "sweat" when every morning I see they have a drop on the tip of each leaf.
Are you aware if these plants are not a good choice for the home of allergy sufferers? This being the case are there any tips? Many thanks.
Are you sure that it is an adansonii ? it looks more like Monstera lechleriana
Agreed, the leaves don't quite look correct for mature Adansonii leaves regardless of their size.
I suspected it may not be Adonsonii, but I love Summer. Keep the clips coming xxx
There are so many subspecies of M. Adansonii, I particularly have a veeeeery similar to Summer's one and it is indeed an Adansonii, spp Blanchetii. the diference between some of them sometimes is just the inflorescences
@@HugoCassimiro It could also be Monstera Adansonii Var. Laniata
@@jake6681 It is! I´ve seen Laniatas in botanical gardens and they look exactly like this one.
Great videos! I have a large one of the longest leaf is around 10 inches, I've had mine for 2 months and it has produced 2 new leaves, mine does have a lot more fenestration compared to yours. Only cost me £9
Ok everyone, repeat after me: monstEra adANsonii 😉🙃
Right
Was a painful experience.
Get off your high horse. Some people are from different countries and can't pronounce things as well.
Nate we’re all from different countries here, what’s your point?
I think it’s fair to assume that regardless of the pronunciation there is no confusion as to which species of plant people are referring to...
i didn't realise it can be that huge!!
Hey, could you do a video on dracaena care. I had the dracaena fragrans and lost it after getting fungus gnats and trying to eradicate them. I want to know what type of soil/mix you use to provide drainage. Would greatly appreciate it.
Ah, Dracaena are tough - give them lots of light and water and they're happy as a clam, and very tough plants. You probably don't need any dracaena tips because you have a pest issue rather than a plant problem. So if you're still open to advice on gnat warfare, read on!
Definitely use a soil topper like potting gravel, which keeps the topsoil most but stops most gnats from reaching it to lay their eggs. Then, also start regularly adding neem oil to your watering can as both treatment and preventative - say once a month to start but adjust depending on your own watering schedule and needs - neem is harmless /beneficial to the plants themselves, if a bit smelly. (It breaks the gnat breeding cycle and with regular use also makes the plant taste bad to any bugs trying to eat it, so brilliant against aphids and scale, too!) Give it 2-6 weeks for full results depending on your climate and level of infestation - gnats won't disappear from your life completely but it'll keep 98% of the population down and in small numbers they're totally harmless. Get a cape sundew (carnivorous plant) to eat most of the rest and you're golden! Cape Sundews grow like weeds (understatement) but need to basically be kept in a shallow water dish AT ALL TIMES 24/7. If you can do that they're a great biological measure to help keep gnat populations down, and they have adorable tiny flowers and their own special appeal for the plant collection. Good luck :)
I bought a beautiful full 6 inch basket of narrow leaf adansonii. My ac went out the summer after I bought it (I live in Houston, Texas) and the plant started to decline. Still being a newbie my first instinct was to repot it. I used a pot that I thought was only slightly bigger (10 inch I believe). It had been doing well, I thought I had the watering down until recently leaves started to turn yellow in the middle and eventually falling off. Watering problem I suppose. The plant is still growing new leaves on the ends of the vines but im thinking of repotting into a much smaller pot and using a moss pole. My question is, will it regrow leaves in the bare stems if I add the pole? Or is better to chop it up and propagate? I like the long vines.
Help is much appreciated!
Hello! I also have that one, but smaller. But it is growing but no leaves, just the stem growing, do you know why? Thank you Summer, love your channel ;)
You said it "Takes on water when it wants?". Does that mean that you keep the basin moist?
The leaves will go down .
I’ve had my Cheese plant for nearly a year,
it has grown lots of leaves and I have 2
with holes! 🙂
how to unattach a stem root climbing plant? my adansonii attached itself to a ladder and idk how to get it off. please help!!!
I so love this plant. However I am doing something wrong. My plant has new leaves that will not open. They stay tightly closed for weeks and then start to turn brown and die back. Also the other leave are turning yellow/brown. I wait until soil is dry before watering. It is getting filtered sunlight.and I don’t see any bugs. I bought this at a grocery store since I haven’t seen it anywhere else being sold in Hawaii. Help...sending out SOS. Wish I knew how to add pictures here.
Wow, those leaves are huge. Mine is doing well, but leaves aren’t as big.
i'm searching for someone to give a cutting for me! beautiful one
Etsy has tons of them.
You sure thats adonsonii? Thats huge! Wow
Luke Ritchie was thinking the same! mine looks sooo delicate in comparison lol
It is. I heard the leaves grow much bigger when they are allowed to climb, she probably got a cutting of a very mature, happy plant. You can find pictures of large ones online too.
Rachel K no, it’s probably a Monstera Lechleriana 😊 the texture and looks is at least more matching than with an mature adansonii. But then there are different types of adansonii too.
I just reported mine in a terra cotta pot and it's in a South facing window. I'm concerned about fertilizer. Winter is approaching in 2 months🤔🤔
The new leaves on my Monstera are coming in a lime color. Will these leaves go green? Do you have an idea what may remedy this? Thank you
How do you get cuttings from botanic gardens? Is there a program? I would love that too!
I've never heard it said like monster wonder which way is correct now lol
Omg I want one with massive leaves 😢😂
I hv big adansonii for 5 years too big n size large😍😍😉😉😉
My leaves are smaller and vining slowly, the leaves turn yellow with brown tips even if I let it dry out
I still confused between monstera adansonii or accuminata🤣🤣🤣🤣 which one is mine that i have at my house????
Is it ok to use all purpose fertilizer for all my plants including Cacti and succulents
Maybe this is a subspecies of adansonii (monstera adansonii var laniata)
Can it be placed in low to medium light
Hello. How do you water a plant bottoms up?
oh wow, how do i purchase a huge adonsonii like that?
Looks a lot like monstera acuminata :)
My Monstera adansonii is growing smaller leaves. Help what do I do
It's a subspecies of monstera adansonii known as monstera laniata
Where tf is the cheese
this is the least information i've gotten on this plant in a video so far. It's big cause you got it like that and it grows well under a grow light? Fascinating.
Are you planning to cover a Monstera deliciosa too in these series ?
Is it the Monstera Adansonii var Laniata?
It's huge omg
Is it adansonii or adNAsonii??? I'm confused. She keeps saying adNAsonii.
What variety is this?
This is actually monstera lechleriana or monstera adansonii var laniata
I think this might be a Monstera Lechleriana
monstera acuminata, not adansonii 😲
Are you sure it’s not monstera epipremnoides??
Not sure if that's an Adensonii? Leaves are huge!
It looks like monstera acacoyaguensis to me
I thought so too
Isnt that a monstera acuminata?
I hv monstera at my house but i dont know it is adansonii or accuminata🤣🤣🤣
it's more to lechliana from what i see
that is monstera acuminata!!!!
curious, what makes you say that? Summer is usually really good at knowing what is what and she said she got the cutting from a botanic garden which usually means you know what youre getting.
What's the difference and what made you say that, i dont know the acuminata!
@@alex0589 probably because the holes take up much less space than the usual adansonii, i thought it wasn't adansonii too
Wait, so in 2 years, her plant grew 3 leaves? xDD
That is very little growth in over a year.
pretty sure thats not an adansonii
Meh! Not an impressive specimen! Looks sad! Not too bad but it's missing it's true potential
