Don't worry J, you weren't the only one wondering that lol. Bad Idea? Perhaps. Hilarious Idea? You better believe it! This is instantly one of my all time favorites for oh so many reasons: Sara reading "Danny Viola" as Danny Victor to everyone's confusion, the constant searching for the right page, Sara running around trying to help, her cheering them on one second and laughing at them the next.
Annoyingly, my phone must've been slightly turned when I started the recording. So it came out sideways and in lower quality since my phone thought I was trying to hold it vertically. I rotated it so people don't have to turn their heads to the side at least.
This video from before Waitress hit broadway features Sara and Jason and the recording process of Bad Idea and You Matter to Me for "What's Inside: Songs from Waitress": • Sara Bareilles - What'... It talks about the song's vocal gymnastics and highlight's its frenetic energy. Jason probably never realized he'd have to sing Sara/Jenna's part on a broadway stage someday!
Jake did a very good job keeping up and improvising. It's just so difficult given how high some of the female part is while also being quite a tongue twister (and it's been a while since Jason had to sing it at all, much less being asked to do Sara's part). So they were jumping between multiple harmonies and singing in unison and forgetting the words and rifling through pages. It was so entertaining :)
I realized that I hear myself in some parts of the video. I was giddy to the point of basically being high lol. I was also anxiously awaiting the possibility that I could be called up on stage any minute. So I was singing along here and there, partly to warm up and partly since I was too happy to care if it got picked up by the mic. I'm surprised I can't hear myself more in the videos I'm uploading. It's actually me singing the high part around 4:20, as Jason and Jake both seemed to sing the male part around "when there's love to be had" (I would think Jason would normally be fine with getting higher around 420 ;) ) Then a few seconds later we all forgot the words and sang "worse" again instead of "good", but at least I did the higher "worse" lmao. It was so much fun ;) I should really go to bed again someday...

I don’t think this will fit in the description, so here’s my overall summary again.
Jason was indeed there!! I called it again ;) I will share a handful of clips I got from the karaoke in an attempt to capture the feel good vibe for anyone interested. I don’t remember all the names of the participants, but they performed very well in what must have been a surreal, overwhelming experience. The crowd, cast, band, and Sara and Jason were extremely supportive and it was a very cool atmosphere. Just a bit of a step up from a typical karaoke bar to a broadway stage 😛.
This was my second time seeing Jason by surprise in a week. I absolutely love and adore Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, and Waitress anyway, so seeing Jason for the 10th time in 2 years to the day was just a glorious bonus 😁. I realized the date I saw Jason as Dr. Pomatter in Waitress was exactly 2 years prior to this night. Sara did some singing and things onstage after the show that night too.
My family and I were thrilled to see the special karaoke ending. My sister has been a professional singer since she was 17, so she had been hoping to sing. However, she has a cold and didn’t feel up to it, especially given how challenging Sara’s songs are to begin with. She had planned to sing She Used to Be Mine. I signed up hoping to be called to sing It Only Takes a Taste or maybe You Matter to Me, despite also being terrified at the idea of singing on a broadway stage lol. I could barely sing in front of anyone a couple years ago, so I’ve made a lot of progress and was a little disappointed to not get to sing (it could’ve been with Sara too since I picked a duet).
It was an EXTREMELY fun time again. The show was great. Katherine McPhee was awesome (as Jenna), as was the entire cast, including Drew Gehling, NaTasha Yvette Williams, Caitlin Houlahan, Ben Thompson, Larry Marshall, Benny Elledge, and Christopher Fitzgerald, who is always quite the crowd pleaser as the energetic, strange, and endearing Ogie. If you have a chance to see this hilarious, beautiful show before it’s broadway run ends on January 5th, you won’t regret it. It’s also as sweet a story as Jenna’s most award winning pie 🥧 🍰 🧁
Oh by the way, I used Ticketmaster promo codes to save tons of money, and they might still work. They are play3 and fam5
