So yeah good game, but not perfect like many may say. (also i still cant point out why i love undyne)

I think people who say it's the best game usually just don't play games but since Undertale is popular and unusual they are kinda attracted to it, they like it and then they come to that conclusion which sounds rather werid knowing how they aren't interested in games

I don't really see any games as being the best at anything. There are games I enjoy and consider to be high-quality, but I've never seen a game that I would call completely perfect. The problem is that when something gets so hyped up that it can't ever live up to it that causes newcomers to be disappointed, and then that disappointment can easily turn into dislike or even hatred of the work and the people hyping it up.

In order for you to care about a character, the character also needs to have at least one flaw he/she/it has to overcome, otherwise you get a bland character who is already perfect (aka good at everything) and simply does not resonate with people. Because in Real Life, *even good people are flawed.* And seeing a character you can empathize with thanks to both its virtues and flaws buids a connection between the public and the character.

    This was... a phenomenal watch.
I'll be frank, for a large part of it, I was sitting here, shaking my head and laughing at you, because you were missing something that seemed so very obvious to me. Then you stopped, pointed it out, and pulled a 180, and... honestly I've never been more impressed with a critic. It's just like you said -- so many critics become more concerned with being RIGHT about their assessments than with whether or not they're being honest.
Undertale is really and truly original.
Iif I were to expand upon that and add to your assessment, I'd point out that it's not just any one factor. As you went through and pinpointed each one, asking "is this one it?," I was -- once again -- rolling my eyes, because it semed so very obvious to me that it's kind of a combination of all of them. It's the dark, eerie tones of the Genocide route juxtaposed with the goofy humor of the rest of the game, the deep lore (which, with all due respect, at the time of writing this video you actually seem to have missed a large chunk of) combined with the fact that it breaks every expectation you may have had about RPG-style storytelling, the bizarre (and occasionally deliberately unappealing) character/environment design mixed with the genuine appeal of simple graphics hearkening back to the nostalgia of playing older games...
It all builds up to an experience quite unlike others. It's all these factors combined that makes it so original.
But futhermore, in direct contrast to what you claimed, it IS the moral choices. The game doesn't ask the player "is being mean wrong?" The game asks the player how much they value the lives of fictional characters. Because the story is so very meta and directly addresses the player on multiple occasions as being separate from the main character, when it comes time to finish the "genocide" route, Sans, Flowey, and Chara all ask the player directly if this was worth it. They acknowledge that the player only did this for curiosity's sake, and that now it's done, now that the world is fully explored and destroyed and every ounce of curiosity satisfied, they'll go on to do the same to the next game they play. It makes the player feel... guilty.
Players aren't often used to being directly confronted by the object of their curiosity for the actions taken in pursuit of that curiosity. In Undertale's genocide route, the player knowingly destroys everything they love about the game in pursuit of satisfying their curiosity, knowing full well that it is morally "wrong." But it's just a game, so it doesn't matter! ...until the characters in that game start to beg questions that make the player see them as people rather than fictional characters.
This particular style of moral choice is one of the main qualities that makes Undertale so original, as you've put it -- it's not a simple "what is the right thing to do in this case?" question; it's a question of how much the player values their satisfaction and curiosity over the good they might have done for others, especially in a case where the question of the others' sentience and feelings on the matter haven't even previously crossed their mind.
I got on a bit of a rant here -- apologies for the massive comment. But once again, thank you for this video, old as it may be. The advent of Delta Rune has kind of brought all this lore to the forefront of many people's minds, and it's refreshing, in a way, to be reminded of how much the original game impacted people -- even if it was simply to frustrate them immensely.

Your "massive rant" was a joy to read and easily one of my favourite comments on this entire website. I don't think there's a better way to capture the moral question posed by the game, and just why the genocide route and all the character deaths have the impact they do.

Id disagree on the "choices" part of "moral choices". Cause really? There isnt much to really "choose".
However, the theme of "Morality" is very well explored in Undertale. Undertale doesnt present you with much choice regarding morality - the choices are pretty simple, black and white. The tone of "Never kill anyone" is set by sparing Toriel, tbh - cause if you did that, you now know how morality works in this game, thus turning any notion of moral choice into more of an... arbitrary choice.
This, however... does not, in any way, demean how morality is presented, explored, analyzed and thoughts over in Undertale. Rather than giving you actual choice, Undertale gives you food for thought regarding morality(Especially the value of fictional life, morality of power, what role curiosity and self-satisfication play in this etc.).
It does this by acknowledging the videogamey elements of the game(saving and combat especially) in its world, presenting a very unique platform to explore morality.

I agree on most of your points, but not on the one that Undertale is truly original. Undertale has had a big, big problem with the Mortis Ghost's "OFF" fanbase, because of how much it referenced, to the point of borderline copying from the older classic.

When playing Undertale for the first time, I wasn't particularly impressed by Toriel. She was sweet and kind and interesting too at the end of the first arc, but nothing about her personality really made me latch onto her. She really did make the game feel special from the get-go though. Especially at the end of the arc, where she gives you a hug.) And then came Papyrus. Everything about him from his ego to his music made me smile like a doofus. He may have sounded pompous and arrogant, but I interpreted it similar to how Sans seems to view him. Its endearing and lovable. Its like watching an ambitious child, full of energy and dreams but still naive and innocent. I think that's the reason Papyrus is a fan favorite. He's simply precious, in a very childlike way. And in a world of tired disillusioned adults, this is something refreshing.
On a side note, I actually really like Alphys. I feel like she needed more development, but it was satisfying to see her evolve throughout the game. I think a lot of people dislike her simply because she might be a little too familiar. (A nerd with low self-esteem.) These are qualities a lot of people have, but are not proud of.
And on a final note, my personal favorite character is Sans, like most of the fanbase apparently. But I didn't really like him much at first. It was only after the Genocide run that I realized how much I actually empathize with him. I wasn't going through a very good point in my life that time, and I realized how similar I actually felt to Sans's predicament. Hopelessness, putting on a fake smile, masking true feelings with humor etc. I felt like I really understood him, he didn't feel like a character from a video game so much as an actual person. And this was something very new to me. The fact that he's funny and has some really cool moments was a big bonus too. He was just an overall great character with depths that were eye-opening to explore. And I wanted to see him get through his problems, and have a chance to be happy again.

100% YES. While I do like Toriel, I honestly didn’t see anything super exciting interesting or interesting about her. In fact, she’s the only one I ended up killing on my first play through. (On accident, but even then I didn’t feel super bad) The Skelebros is where I started to absolutely love this game. While I think I still would’ve liked it if characters like Toriel were peak to me, she definitely isn’t what stood out. Papyrus is my personal favourite. Every time Pap was on screen I couldn’t help but smile and chuckle to myself. He’s so goofy and egotistical, but also has that childlike kindness. Sans is probably my second favourite. I love how he’s still a goofball joke character while also obviously having way more depth to his character, mostly packed away inside the genocide run. I think what makes me appreciate these two even more is that despite their little disputes, they both very obviously love each other. While Sans’ puns may annoy Papyrus, it’s never out of hatred. The Grilby’s scene and the “date” at the MTT resort really highlight that. “Isn’t my brother cool?”. I love these two both as separate characters, and their brotherly love. Ultimately, while Toriel is a good character and the ruins is a good section imo, for me personally, the skelebros were the highlight of Undertale for me.

I think people liked it because there is so much depth in the characters. Each all had a stereotypical surface but when you interacted more with them in the mercy run, you get to see that there is much more to the story. Papyrus might be narcissistic, but he also very kind hearted and just want to be loved by everyone. So why not amp up your good qualities? That will make them like you right? Undyne at the start has a strong hate fir humans until you the player become friends with her. And you can see that she can be rational and think of Papyrus' safety and able to forgive alphys despite her being a sort of pathological liar. Sans may be a punny skeleton whos lazy but through the genocide you can see he is really depressed and has no hope for the future. Toriel might be the most motherly character out of the whole underground and planet earth but she is afraid of abandonment and furious towards Asgore. Theres so much depth. And they all feel so human.

The thing that annoys me though is when people talk about Undertale as if it's this amazing example of moral choice in games. Like it's this amazing study of making difficult decisions or something like that. But it's not. The game is literally begging you at every turn to take the pacifist route. Even if you somehow miss it and play through all the way without going pacifist the game basically just says "hey maybe you should go back and try to not kill anyone this time." and the genocide route is so needlessly cruel that you have to go out of your way to do it by grinding and killing every random encounter in every zone.
If you want an actual example of meaningful moral choices in a game look no further than Disco Elysium.
Undertale is a meta-commentary on the nature of games more than it is anything else. It has some charming characters and whatnot, but it is not in any way an example of morality. And I mean it's hardly the first ever RPG where you can avoid killing anything. Technically that's true in pokemon it's not exactly a meaningful statistic. And I mean if we're being really honest here Undertale is basically just a visual novel. The game begs you to play the pacifist route so hard that like 95% of players are going to do it and it's basically just a few minor bullet hell segments followed by dialogue. There's not much in the way of actual gameplay outside of that. Figuring out how to pacify the enemies is usually pretty trivial and I'm pretty sure you can't fuck it up unless you explicitly attack them or die. Like you can't say a wrong thing and then lose the ability to pacify someone.
Not that these are bad things, the main appeal clearly comes more from the characters and writing and that's fine. I just wish people would stop claiming that it's somehow more than that.

You kinda lost me on this whole "Genocide and pacifist are the only two choices" idea.
First of all, just speaking objectively, not only is there a neutral ending, there's something like 20 variations on the neutral ending based on every combination of bosses you kill, plus a total body count. And obviously people aren't MISSING the neutral endings because otherwise, nobody would fight Omega Flowey.
Secondly, the reason people like the game is because of the execution of ALL the different virtues you talked about.
Ex: On my first run, I did as you suggested for killing people, and only killed the bosses who I thought had it coming. (Making MY choice rather than the RIGHT choice)
I loaded my save-game after killing goat-mom so I could spare her, and the game had a plan for that: Flowey made fun of me. This sort of thing is brilliant.
Something similar happened when I killed Undyne (intentionally). Normally, you get a phone call from Papyrus when Undyne is chasing you. (COMEDY) I still got the same call at the same moment, with papyrus trying to set up a hang-out, but now she's dead. (TRAGEDY)
I mean, maybe you hate it because you were spoiled on it? I just can't fathom the idea that you don't make meaningful choices, its literally THE game that does choice best.

"technically, there are choices all over the game, but those are generally small dialogue changes and easter eggs."
about the neutral ending, I personally think that the neutral ending is meant to be for the first time you're playing the game, when you was kind of lost in the beginning and then decided what path you were going through. if you killed only one monster, you are locked to the neutral and genocide endings, and a first time player that chooses to only fight, most likely won't initiate the genocide route because you need to kill a set number of monsters in every area, which makes it so that you will need to grind a lot, so, basically locked to neutral ending.

The reason that people like Earthbound and Undertale is how they make you think about video games as a medium. You're missing the point with the moral choices in undertale: no one is actually taking these choices and thinking seriously through them like real moral choices. Undertale examines why you'd choose these paths in the context of the video game. The game is self-aware and asks "why do you think this is okay to do this in this video game? What is it about a video game that would compell you to kill everyone in it? Just because you can? Why? What does that say?" And even if that question is exactly grandiose, no video game has done that before undertale. Just Cause or GTA never explored why you felt compelled to murder people and go on car chases.

I do agree with you, but I do believe there have been examples in the past of games asking questions like this, just maybe not in the same way. I don't really have any examples off the top of my head, but I just have a feeling at least a few have done this before. This does not detract from how Undertale did it, which definitely made me question my decisions a lot more than I would have expected.

I loved this video! All the points are very valid and it actually kinda opened my eyes a bit. Even I started questioning the same thing to myself, "why did I like it so much?"
And personally the thing that did it for me that wasn't included in the video, was that there had been so many generic games the last years that just followed a formula and didn't really care for anything else other than killing some time. The fact that this was an "RPG" and that I already had a few expectations as to how it was gonna go caught me completely off guard, specially when the game breaks the fourth wall with the save/load function. I experimented so many emotions during the gameplay that I forgot you could feel while playing something. I mean, HELL the Omega Flowey fight got me screaming and sweating cold, CLOSING my game and breaking the fourth wall like to was nonexistent.. It was so... original! I had seen games before playing with the idea of "the player" but NEVER like undertale did. And from there I just wanted to know everything about the game and found out that the story got deeper and deeper until I fell in love with it. Of course this requires you to PLAY the game a few times and not jsit watch someone do it (as many people did) but, the shock factor, the small comedy, the absurd moments that made me giggle were so unique and rare to find in an rpg game.
From there I guess people just wanted others to experiment the same or know their thoughts about it and they started to share it. In a year where games like CoD or the 6th part of a franchise were coming up, Undertale really stood out as unique and interesting.

While I agree that you shouldn't tell people how to play the game I think you should look at the other perspective. Genocide ending is much better after experiencing the pacifist run, part from it making more sense logically and partly because you were able to grow attached to the characters. Neutral is a bit of a tricky area. Accidentally killing Toriel is a big part of the game and affects the player a lot, and I generally think that's an okay path to run. However it's not the "true" ending. A person might finish it and think "that's it?" as it leaves much to be desired.
Generally the people who told others to play pacifist first did so because they wanted the person to get the full experience. It wasn't out of any ill-will nor were they trying to push their playstyles on to the others. They generally wanted to help.
That's not to say I agree that others should tell you how to play, but it's not so black and white as you seem to make it.

The best way to play this game is Pacifist > Genocide > Neutral (if you feel like it), I don't really see what's the wrong in trying to help others get the best game experience they could. It's like telling somebody to play the games of a certain series in the right order to enhance experience. Besides, if somebody gets the neutral ending on their first try, they might not want to sit through the entire game again so they end up disliking the game itself.

Papyrus is confidence incarnate. Especially at the beginning, when you don't know him, this can come off as egotism. This confidence is not only in himself, but in everyone around him. You can be a murderous psychopath and he still believes there will be some good in you. It's an innocent naivety, sure, but it's that undying optimism that we've all felt at some point as a child. The feeling that everything will work about, the feeling that nothing can ever stop hope and friendship, the feeling that we are all capable of the impossible. He's goofy, he's clumsy, he's childlike, he's naive, but he never stops believing in the future. There's something endearing about that.

      @dirax13 7 лет назад +108

I think that's probably also a big part of why he's the character most likely to turn someone off of a genocide run. Undyne and Sans are hard to fight, they are a challenge and you need to stay determined to beat them, Papyrus is literally trivial to fight but plays at your emotions instead. Killing Papyrus is a lot breaking the illusions of childhood. He believes so strongly in the power of goodness, friendship and the "rightness" of the world that it always makes me feel bad to be living proof he is wrong. He is the embodiment of Optimism as much as confidence and makes me want to prove him right, that one good person can change the world. It killed my friends geno run TWICE and I still cant bring myself to do it.

I went to the top of a mountain for a few hundred years to find myself, and figured out the answer to your question (or not). The comedy and the story and the characters and such are all the hook, the very first sentence of a much longer essay. I guess it depends on how much it hooks you, huh? Those who are hooked the most are inspired to create something with their inspiration before the initial dissipation of said inspiration occurs, and people like me eat it up like spaghetti (if you catch my drift). EVERYONE who enjoyed Undertale to that point sought out more content to continue on where Undertale left them, and this is fan-games, comics, art, you name it. All of that satisfaction bleeds through, and either people are horrified, and blame the fandom, or they hop on the bandwagon (or they sit in the middle). The over-appreciation isn't just for the ones who played the game: it's for the ones who were...

Undertale's success is simple. They set up an expectation for the game to be funny and lighthearted with a cast of silly characters, only for your expectations to be completely subverted when it takes a hard left into harsher adult themes like morality, dimensional rifts, time and space, murder, madness, loss, revenge, punishment.
This is exactly why Steven Universe's fanbase is so amazed by the show. They spent a very long time setting the stage for it to be a little go get em' series just so they could swoop around your sensibilities and hit you with a plot you wouldn't think the characters you now could be part of. Stevens off fighting monsters, eatin fries, playing with novelty backpacks, and then suddenly hes confronting the sins left behind for him to endure by his war criminal mother, being ripped apart by what he thinks hes supposed to be and what he feels he really is, on a planet in immediate danger of becoming the next kill for a race of magical rock women.
In response to the greatest cartoons of all time, people are always going "and this is a KIDS show?!" Its all about setting a dinky bar and then smashing through it with heavy traumatizing plot.

You know, people may have already said this, but I think I've figured out what you're missing. When you're looking at the game and trying to calculate what could possibly be granting this explosion of popularity, you're only accounting for the game itself. This is an issue because of how Undertale's rise came to be- primarily, people found it through their favorite let's players playing it. While normally this wouldn't be enough to warrant the response that this game got, content creators went out of their way to tell fans to play the game before they watched because this game is best played blind. What a lot of people didn't realize is just how many people would listen to that. My favorite example is of the Steam Train play though- Ross and Barry spend a solid five minutes telling everyone that this game should be played through before you watch things on it, so everyone should go play the game right now. I ended up heeding their advice, which is how I played the game, but the amount of people that also listened is obvious. The series almost got canceled because it wasn't getting views, and then about a week later, it was getting 400,000+ because people had played the game and now were coming back to watch.
Tl;dr: This game exploded because of the LP community heeding the creator's advice and encouraging their viewers to play before they watched, meaning that more people who were exposed to the game had a reason to go out and play an easily accessible game.

      @Shalakor 7 лет назад +24

There's also a certain logical fallacy at play here though... A popularity vote is a measure of what's most popular, but it is not a direct correlation of what is most unpopular. Plenty of people that voted for one character could have just as easily liked another second best by a thin margin, but that wouldn't really show because only the choices made are given any weight in such a poll. Low voted entries are more so those that had more votes taken from them by the ones that got high votes. (Also, what if you really can't decide which one edges out as your favorite so you just choose the the one of your top picks that already has the most votes?)
Additionally, "the nerd who's afraid of failing everyone and socializing in general" isn't so much so necessarily less relatable as it is less fun to relate to. Pretty much anyone can relate to being the odd one out at some point or another and knowing they didn't fit in to said situation or did something wrong, but it doesn't feel very good so you're going to try to deny relation to that emotional state. Where Alphys is the embracement of that negativity, Papyrus is the willful ignorance we all wish to achieve in order to feel better about our shortcomings, perceived and real alike. Obviously, both extremes are pretty unhealthy, but the optimistic extreme is inherently going to be more enjoyable, where as the pessimistic extreme will be somewhat more intellectually stimulating (which is also why nerds will be more prone to falling into the latter and vice versa for the other).

I know you aren’t reading comments from something this old, but there’s an idea coming around about this game and games like it I think you should hear about.
Essentially, Undertale is one of the first videogames to utilize the player as an active story element and the quirks of the medium as a part of the story. This has since happened most notably with DokiDoki literature club, and it’s possibly starting a new wave of stories that can only be told through videogames.
What I mean by this is that Undertale is a story game in which the player is neither faceless and mute (ex. Pokémon) nor roleplaying someone more helpful to the story (ex. Mass Effect). It’s actively using the player as a protagonist, and not a straw man that the player controls, and it tells you this by, for example, mocking you when you fail and recognizing when you persist or try new things. The reason this is interesting is that it isn’t something you can do with other media. You can tell a similar story to pokemon for 1400 episodes and have a similar popularity until you introduce Pokémon Contests, but the weight of the Undertale story isn’t told without the reaction of an actual player. It’s about what they think almost as much as it is about what the characters do.
You could read that as “it’s LP bait”, and it is, but I’d also actually draw parallels to “show, don’t tell” from movies with this. The story is using the weight having a player to drive the plot, in a way reminiscent to how movies use the unique abilities of animation and visuals to drive plots. Using interactions like this that are specific to videogames can allow stories to be told that you couldn’t tell before, much like how before movies you couldn’t tell a story like Wall-E. Either way, it’s proliferating. DDLC, which I’m betting you played, tried the same thing through some split storylines and a shit ton of fourth wall breaks- and there have been many lesser known titles trying to explore the concept since undertale came through (albeit to middling success). These stories are likely only scratching the surface of what videogames can do to tell us new and interesting stories.
I hope I explained this well enough, but anyway, I’d like to hear your thoughts.

@@CecilyRenns MGS2 isn't that great an example. The game makes a point of addressing Raiden as if he was someone playing a video game, and thus addressing the player by proxy, and the game does react to Raiden acting outside of the norm, the game doesn't react to the player all that much. MGS1, 3 and 4 have better examples, with Psycho Mantis interacting with the controller and save data, The Sorrow's boss fight throwing the deaths of every soldier back in your face, and The End dying of old age if the game is saved, then resumed several RL days later.

Maybe he means the movies? The movies are sort of a mixture between a disjointed road trip and politics with fight scenes elsewhere. The original trilogy (I watched the extended edition) I find amazing, but they lack novelty. Perhaps it's because Tolkien-esque high fantasy has been ripped off so many times that there's no way elves/dwarves/orcs can possibly feel original at this point. Glad your willing to admit your mistakes. It takes a LOT of effort to actually managing to break through that barrier, and coming to realize a huge wall you have built for yourself, and how it has been influencing you for such a long time. I hope you'll be able to enjoy more original material in the future! ... Even if I do argue that Friendship Is Magic has put a refreshing an amazing twist on the MLP brand as a whole.
I don't fully agree with your view on the story and characterization. For example, what makes Papayrus so engaging is that he's not just an arrogant, full of himself dick. But he's a confident, bombastic guy who those himself into everything with 100% passion and a child-like glee that we all desire to keep hold of.
Also, relating back to your originality... you never once mentioned one of the most important factors of Undertale’s success: The Meta Aspect. Or being that you are a fellow Extra Credits fan: Narrative Mechanics. How the save function, which so many games take meely for granted, is actually an incredibly important part of the narrative... and you aren’t the only one with such power. For many, the Flowery discussion afterward Toriel is THE standout moment that got them hooked into the game. Most people thought you had to weaken her into order to talk her down, but when you are... BAM. There’s a sudden HUGE spike in damage, and Toriel’s dies. You are distraught, and Flowery taunts you about it, making you load back to the previous game-state in order to ensure that Toriel survives... and then Flowery reveals that HE KNOWS WHAT YOU DID.
THAT it huge reason why Undertale became the phenom it now is. Because in a gaming industry off blockbuster AAA games where the gameplay and story are considered to be very different parts of a game... Undertale showed that the best video game stories used the elements of the game itself to tell the story.

A lot of the problems in this video seem to come from a misinterpretation of characters or just lack of enthusiasm in what makes it great. As a game critic myself with plenty of integrity, I would say Undertale has THE most endearing characters in all of gaming that I've seen so far. It's game design is groundbreaking and original, and the entire game is clever, both in mechanics and writing. You can't say a game is bad because it's mechanics don't fit your playstyle. If I don't like games with swords, that doesn't make all zelda games bad.

Interesting video! That said, I still think that you're kind of discounting *charm* as a factor. I mean, I know that's vague, but when I think about why I love Spirited Away, it's certainly not the same zany energy that fuels Undertale and Homestuck - plus, alongside the zaniness, one of the primary reasons why I love Undertale so much is it's core view that *everyone is a person and with work you can always find a way to get along.* Like, it's stuff like befriending Papyrus and Undyne that really makes me love it, on top of the humor and originality. (Well, I also love the meta too, but that's probably in there with originality and surprise.) I think that this conceit of a pacifist run being not just possible but actively condoned really is important - I went into Undertale almost blind, and one of the most powerful moments for me was when, fighting Toriel, after trying to talk a few times I decided she must be one of those RPG tutorial fights where the enemy doesn't actually die when you win, or else that I had to weaken her before trying again - and then, when I was trying to hp to "red" in Pokémon terms, my next hit did more than expected and she died, and in the next room Flowey ripped into me for trying to be a pacifist but then killing Toriel. That was really the moment where it struck me that it's not just something where you beat your enemies up and then spare them, but something where you really have to try to not fight. (It also made the Asgore fight better in my opinion, by reversing that and forcing you to attack him for real.)

I agree, relatable, charming characters are a big deal to me. Every one of the main characters in Undertale has positive and negative traits, aspirations, and mannerisms, and they feel much more real than that. People say LISA is a far better game story-wise but I couldn't get past a couple of hours into it. The characters there simply lack charm.

The Lord of the Rings is actually exceptionally original, but it's totally understandable why people don't see that. Because were it released today, yeah a lot of what's in it would be pretty generic, but the thing is, LotR defined the genre. Many of the elements that make it unoriginal were elements that it started. Orcs, elves, spelling it dwarves instead of dwarfs. So the originality argument could also apply to that.

I didn't like Undertale for a few reasons:
    1. I didn't find it unique at all. Just random. _Too_ random. Like Alice in Wonderland, only without the morals, satire, and intelligence. After a while it just feels like a bad fever dream.
    2. None of the characters were interesting or sympathetic. They were just random and weird. They had no agency, besides being random and weird. Those aren't characters, they're quirks.
    3. The characters you were probably supposed to connect the most with were annoying. Like Dr. Alphys, for example. By the end of the game, I never wanted to see her again.
    4. You can only get the "true ending" if you don't kill anyone, which is extremely difficult and boring.
    5. The gameplay itself is boring.
    6. The story is bland and it really doesn't make any sense.
    7. The "humour" is terrible and often drags on for way too long.
    8. If you go for the true ending, you learn that the game really isn't an RPG. This isn't a huge problem, but it's kind of disappointing if you really get into the game and use your imagination to give the player character a background, attitude, personality, name, etc. So much for "self expression".
    9. Your choices really don't matter much at all.
    10. I actually fell asleep the first hour into the game.

Since you asked why people like Papyrus, and as I Papyrus is my most favourite character in Undertale, here is my reasoning.
I really like Papyrus' innocent reactions. When Papyrus gives electric puzzle, he leaves snow tracks and when player solves the puzzle, he questions how fast player solved it, clueless of the reason.
And second point. The humour. If Toriel's part was about love and care, Papyrus is about comedy. And on my first run, I have killed Toriel by accident and I was really downed. Papyrus' comedy helped me overcome the sadness.
And as a character determined to fight you, Papyrus starts to feel friendship towards player. He helps the puzzle in the way, you can get past him even if you lose to him too much, or have unintentional violence towards him. No matter what you do, He will try to spare you. I really like his kindness.
And lastly, this is a personal reason, but he reminds me of Luigi. I like Luigi for being a character he is not number one. The forever number two, which creates underdog sympathy. I believe Papyrus holds the similar trigger on me, being innocent and clueless nature portraiting him to be not really the best...?

I'll be honest, went into the video ready to be annoyed by another youtuber complaining about the fanbase. That rant was a breath of fresh air. Thanks for making the day slightly brighter.
Though I disagree with the idea that doing the genocide run isn't a moral choice in a way. I mean it is certainly not moral in the sense of 'each choice is held by an ideal and system of value, what would be the best one and what would be the one I agree with?', but you find morality in the idea that it knows why you're about to do all these things despite how moral abhorrent it is. You may be doing it for curiosity, but that doesn't change how bad the things are. The overall idea of genocide is not 'killing is bad, maybe don't do that' but 'curiosity left uninhibited, due to a perceived lack of consequence, will tear the world asunder'. That's at least what I drew from it anyways.
    Nice review of it though.

I first heard of Undertale from spoiler-filled RUclips video popping up in my recommended. I wasn't very interested until I saw the Sans fight. Seeing that fight made me decide to get the game right then and there. In fact, seeing the Sans fight for myself was what motivated me to push through the tragic and tedious genocide route. Undertale still has my favorite video game story, and one of my favorite soundtracks.
Most of what makes Undertale good is hard to explain, and I agree with you that the graphics and gameplay aren't enough to make a worldwide phenomenon. But I think it's pretty telling that even a video titled "So... I kinda hate Undertale" turns into a glowing review partway through. Undertale is incredible, whether or not anyone can explain it.

There are two reasons people hate Undertale. None of which are listed here.
First, there's no point anymore. Everything's been spoiled. None of the jokes are funny, none of the events are impactful, none of the mistakes you could make throughout are mistakes you even CAN make anymore, etc. Even if you ARE one of those very rare Let's Play-ers whom happens to play the game blind, they'll get people attacking their choices, spoiling everything, and telling them what to do as they're about to make another choice entirely... bringing about the faulty idea among newer players that the choices had no impact on the experience - for example most first-time players killed Toriel until about four or five months after the game's launch, it's literally designed to be something that's meant to happen and something you're supposed to do as a part of the core experience and nobody will just let you make the mistake anymore even though so many Let's Play channels are a hair's breadth away from it and it of God bugs me so much! The Asgore fight literally makes zero sense unless you kill Toriel in the beginning, and you don't get Flowey repeatedly mocking you - creating a phenomenon where he only shows up for a player at the end of the game, removing any of the surprisingly profound impact and meaning behind him as the final boss - if you don't get the chance to make at least some honest-to-God mistakes here and there, because the only way Flowey shows up is if you make a damn mistake every now and then. Second example, and more importantly, the reason the Asriel fight comes so out of the blue for so many players is because you're not supposed to just casually find it by walkthrough or hearsay. No, most early players had to search the entire game and play at least five to ten runs all while piecing together scattered story fragments to find ONE of the two penultimate endings, many finding genocide before pacifism because it was literally easier to enact and make happen (which is in direct disagreement to a lot of things stated in this video about morality and choices); nowadays the first thing you hear about the game just IS that it has two penultimate endings, coloring the experience in a very irredeemable way, and everyone just picks the pacifism run before they even start. This simply removes any and often all enjoyment from the experience, dare I say removing the "experience" part of the game entirely.
Second, and honestly more importantly despite the minor rant, people seem to think it's a game about pacificm. Except it's not, that's stupid, why would you think that when it forces you to literally beat multiple characters into submission (prime subject being Asgore)? No, Undertale is a commentary on the nature of video games themselves. For example, take Papyrus. He's meant to represent that one guy whom isn't good at any video games, can never keep up with "The Squad", but always tries, always loves what he's doing, and just wants to have fun with his friends. So the question here is, do you play along with the poor guy, even as he fails and even as he annoys you? Even as he brings you out of the comfort of the most relaxing and peaceful area in the game, even above Waterfall? Or, alternatively, do you not put up with his crap and bully him because you don't consider him "on your level"? Most players of Undertale choose the former, but a great many real-world gamers in IRL scenarios sadly choose the latter. It's this lens that seems to have been lost even among its core fans as it hit popularity... the game is not a story so much as it is a satire, which is a really, really interesting discussion to have and one I really wish I saw more often.

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! One of the things I loath about the radical side of the fanbase is that they treat the game like it's some kind of religion. it's hard to love a fanbase that has fringe groups that call you worse than Hitler because you essentially moved pixels in a certain way.
Funny thing is from what I've read, Undertale was supposed to be a comment/satire on Gamers, Fanbases and just internet culture in general the tragic thing is in an effort to make a commentary on cancerous fanbases, he made both one of the most talented yet cancerous fanbases of all.

Ironically, there's almost a catch-22 built into it in that sense.
The game was good because it wasn't popular and relied on subverting expectations
then it got popular and ceased to be good, due to it not being able to play to its strongest factor.
And maybe in another 20 years or so, the cycle will repeat.

All I'll say on that is:
The game has two secret endings. Key word, SECRET. As in, "you don't know about them beforehand." And, er, everyone knows about them.
It's not the popularity itself that killed the game, just an unfortunate biproduct of it... most communities are, quite frankly, not so spoiler-happy. It's partly to do with the immaturity of a lot of its more avid fans... speaking from experience anyways...

You're complaining about spoilers? That's ridiculous I actually laughed at that. Because it's as dumb as saying "I don't like Steven Universe because of spoilers" or "I don't like Steven Universe because of the fandom"
Literally you're complaining about people posting spoilers when that's way worse in Steven Universe. I'm serious in the SU fandom, the day after or the same day there will be spoilers everywhere with no spoiler warning at all.
I find it unnecessary to complain about it because no matter how much you complain it will still come since people don't care they've already seen/played the episode/movie/game so they know what's going to happen. They don't think that others might have not seen it, the thing they care about is themselves. Good luck stopping it though, because we both know that's not possible.

Undertale is well loved because of how weird it is. Just like Homestuck, it's charm comes from how odd and 'relatable' it is to internet weirdos. It is indeed Homestuck 2.0 or Earthbound 3.0. Despite being so 'original' it's no different than the previous two medias. It's just this strange fascination with 'humor plus weird with feelings=Tumble Bait'.

Why kids like Undertale: Quirky, breaks 4th wall=spooky and cool, Easter eggs, genocide vs pacifist wow cool
Why adults like Undertale: It has overwhelming charm. It's effectively meta in a way that's appreciable. It was unique at the time. There are thousands of actions you would never have thought of that result in a variety of Easter eggs. The genocide and pacifist runs are genuinely impactful but also serve as proper commentary on other games at the same time. The comedy and music are superb, and the gameplay makes bullet-hell more engaging.
Ultimately, it's much more enjoyable if you're extremely aware of modern game tropes and cliches. It plays on these, subverts expectations, and brings something unique to the table while being good to excellent in every other respect. A compliment I've often heard is "it has everything I've always wanted in a video game."

Originality by itself _isn't_ necessarily enough. The thing is, it can help suspend disbelief about other things not being good. Not perfectly (as Star Wars 1-3 will attest), but enough that if everything else is only a little incompetent, the novelty or spectacle of originality will make people engaged.
Like Harry Potter. The protagonist barely qualifies as one, each character has the complexity of a blank wall, the villain is terrible, the story is dull, the melodrama is unbearable, the entire wizarding world is full of idiots, and the worldbuilding is quite frankly the only interesting aspect. But because of the clever worldbuilding with original composition, a lot of people ignore that they're reading a story that is, while not terrible, is sort of bad.
Even if whatever it is isn't great, people forgive a lot for originality. I think the best comparison is clever vs. intelligent. Everyone appreciates what is clever more than what is intelligent. Clever is far more interesting. The best thing, though, would be to have a game with originality that also doesn't ignore the other elements. Intelligent and clever are an amazing combination.

Emotions are complicated. Undertale, as any other story that deeply relies on the feelings of each player is not 100% sure to be able to reach you.
You might happen to skip a certain line, to be playing in a weird mood, something happening in real life that grabs your attention and you're not able to get immerse in the world. A lot of things that can't be controlled may prevent you to enjoy the game at it's fullest.
Undertale managed to do that to over 90% of it's players while there are 7% or 8% of people that liked the game but not that much, like you did, and the minority of about 2% that think Undertale is garbage.
You can't make everyone like the game, but Toby Fox managed to get a really big percentage out of that with a certain charm and depth that can't be found everywhere. Sure sucks that you weren't able to enjoy that well, but it's just a part of life. Even if I offer my favorite meal, it's possible that, for some random reasons, you'll just not like it.

I know I'm late to this video, but I just wanted to drop my own two cents in about this.
I think "originality" is a bit underselling what Undertale brings to the table... the originality of Undertale is actually used in tandem with a lot of the other appeals that are mentioned in this video to produce a whole that is more than the sum of the deconstructed parts. the unique qualities of each of the underground's inhabitants implies something about the environment and the community they live in... they all have the ability to exist and thrive as a diverse population. nothing has caused them to conform, and nothing has threatened them out of existence. they're allowed to be who they are, where they are, and everything about the way the game is constructed communicates this. even the way the game mechanically subverts your expectations, like with the talking rock in the tutorial, or any of the puzzles in the forest before you enter Snowden. if something seems one way but acts another way, it's not just a joke... that's allowed. it communicates something about the laxness of this place.
and that all feeds into how the characters are built up too. learning that they all have widely varied quirks and eccentricities reinforces this idea in your mind. and with the more major characters, the game puts a lot of effort into making them feel, for lack of a better term, realistic. like, sure... Toriel is just scripted lines of dialogue and some pixels, but you read her character as a very comforting and motherly presence. but then she starts asserting herself. she pushes back against what you want to do, and makes decisions based on information that you don't have. the game goes to great lengths to make her likable, but also believable, even at the cost of her compliance with your wants. then we meet Papyrus, and while he may be haughty and prideful, he is also 100% honest. you really don't believe he's holding anything back... there are even several instances where he tries to be sneaky, and fails. you know he can't keep a secret. he's innocent. and Sans will bend over backwards, regardless of how annoying his brother may be, just to make sure Papyrus is having fun, and experiencing things that he enjoys. he'll sneakily ask you to play along with Papyrus's ridiculous antics, because Sans loves his brother, and wants to see him stay confident and upbeat. it makes you kind of ask yourself... who would you do that for? who is worth that to you? that's what Papyrus means to Sans. and then we have Undyne, who comes off as really aggressive and scary... until you understand that the intensity of her aggression is one and the same as the intensity of her care for the people she's trying to protect. similarly to Papyrus, a lot of the random encounters and townspeople don't hold much back about themselves. they allow you to learn their unique traits and tendencies, and now here is someone who is fiercely defensive of these people's ability to be who they are in peace. and then there's Alphys, who is anxious and reclusive in proportion to how much she cares about a person and wants to be thought well of by them. she's conflicted between the side of herself that doesn't feel appealing or worthy of another person's time and attention, and her genuine want to engage with that person just because she likes them. and I think it's purposeful that these characters become progressively harder to like as the game goes on. they're just more complicated people, or their charisma has more barriers to it, or they maybe aren't as morally pure... but the longer you go in this game, the more you understand that their lives have value, even if they aren't sunshine and rainbows. even if it isn't that easy. in that sense, of course Toriel, the tutorial character, is the easiest to find appealing.
and every single bit of what you learn in the pacifist run, which of course you played first, because it's the moral option... is leveraged towards showing you what you're erasing from this world when you do the genocide run. the people, their unique traits and eccentricities, the people who care about them and want to protect them... that's what you're removing. and the environment of the underground completely changes its atmosphere because of your influence. the place that once housed all that diverse life and quirkiness now has a hostile actor in it, and that's you.
but let's switch gears for a moment.
in the pacifist run, assuming you're coming into Undertale blind, on your first playthrough, and you've only played pacifist... why do you spare Flowey?
these focal characters have been getting harder and harder to like as the game's gone on, as per the pattern I made note of earlier, and Flowey is the hardest yet at the end of his fight. he's given you many reasons to dislike him, and presented almost no redeeming qualities. I think most people spare him because that's been the expectation throughout the game so far, and one would assume that they should finish out the game by continuing the trend. you spare him like it's a chore. but then after the game is over, and you've done everything there is to do in the game... you aren't really done, are you? even if you had no clue that the genocide route existed, it'd still be a thing you hadn't done yet. and enough stuff changes if you kill things, that there's definitely some reason to explore what happens if you keep doing it. and this is in spite of every reason the game just gave you, to value the world of this game. what is your reason for doing this? whatever it is... there's your answer for Flowey. "the characters aren't real" or "I want to know what happens" or "it's just out of curiosity" or "I have to exhaust every possibility" like, it all goes back to the exact same stuff Flowey was expressing... Flowey was just more distressed about it.
and yeah, by this point "the player is actually just like the villain" is kind of an ass pull, but this isn't meant to say "the player is a bad person" because that never works as a message. the message is, this is why Flowey is redeemable. you were supposed to spare him in the pacifist run, and this is why. he is no more guilty than you are. you don't really know why you should spare Flowey until you make this connection via experience.
and the best part of all of this is that the genocide route portrays the major characters in ways that reinforce the realism of their characterization. their characterization remains consistent while *your* character does a completely unexplained 180. you are out of character. you changed, not them. this game doesn't need to let you make a lot of little meaningless choices... it just needs to let you make one really important one, and everyone else responds very realistically. the characters fight you in the way that is characteristic for them. Papyrus is heartbreaking because he really was innocent. he couldn't do damage to you the way Sans can, and even his best efforts at that are curbed by his genuine desire to think better of you than that, which you take advantage of in order to kill him faster. this fuels Undyne's sense of justice, and Sans is downright grieving. it changes everything.
and all the other engagements from the pacifist route mean more when you're the one destroying them, and everything good they did for you when you experienced this place. the atmosphere changes. the humor is gone. you don't learn anything about anyone, they don't trust you, why would they ever tell you now? it teaches you the value of these things by letting you experience this place when all of it is gone. you remember when Snowden was peaceful, and when you could meet people in the waterfalls, and when characters would remember who you were and be happy to see you. the echo flowers become more melancholy because they remind you of the people who used to be here. Asgore shouldn't have been proven right in his worries.
this isn't really about how terrible you are... it's about how valuable the world is. everything about it, even the complicated parts. you want the world weird and funny and full. and yeah, at the end of the day, the game is all fake. but a real person made it, and is using it to communicate something. this is what I think it means when an artist calls a work their baby. I believe Toby Fox made this game as alive as he was capable of making it. and it might be a sappy, cheesy message at the end of the day... that the world has value, and that your choices matter. but given how much effort was put into saying that, I'm willing to listen.

Also, to cross off LOTR from the list, it’s got a super huge fan base because of a few things. It has an inSANE amount of worldbuilding, most of which was made by Tolkien back on the day. It also started SOOOOO many trends when it comes to medieval fantasy genres (D&D, GOT, and so, SO many video games). It probably wouldn’t be as popular if the films didn’t come out, but it was so impactful that it wouldn’t serve it justice to have a small fan base.

I truly hate 2 things in undertale, there very simple but VERY annoying
-1st. Combat is so meh, the defensive part is amazing dodging to avoid damage amazing..... But a text adventure attacking or.. attacking is meh
-2nd and more of an actual reason is its binary, aka 0=Kill bad 1=Not Kill good, Maybe its just me but the story would have been more interesting if sometimes killing actually was a good thing. You see this alot in media like batman, "Oh ya let the joker live, hope he doesn't do anything bad later like paralyze someone or torture family members" sometimes death is a good thing and saves more lives than loses. It usually doesn't effect me to much cause you know theres more to games than just there stories, but undertales gameplay is as mentioned meh and it runs on its writing and its writing is... boring to me? Xenosaga writing is amazing and has conflict of choices the characters made in the past, while in undertale you know everyone will be sympathetic and nice. Cause of this it becomes flat, more like sulzer water than soda.
    Music is awesome though
Edit: I'd call it more character than originality, but thats just me

Jckfrbn well about the killing bad. I hate how the game demonize you for trying even trying to do what most RPGs are. I feel like the game is _forcing_ you to do pacifism (which most people are fine) but to people like me, who are more to the gameplay and story than story itself, I am being punished for the things what I find in an rpg game fun.

That second point has always angered me so much, Batman is actually one of my two least favorite superhero's because of it (Superman being the other). You see it so many places in modern media where people spare someone who by all rights they should kill since "killing is bad" it's almost as infuriating as when the MC gives the big bad the doomsday device to save the love interest and is immediately betrayed (because why wouldn't he be, this is the villain of the story we're talking about).

it's like how most people think that the genocide run can be done due to self defense, but that's not the meaning of it. you have to kill every monster in the area if you can. killing out of self defense would result in a neutral run, in which the monsters might've deserved to die. but the genocide run? no living being would deserve to die to a monster like you.

Death IS a punishment. What would you do to a person who has killed hundreds of people in cold blood? Let them live a life in isolation? To me, that is even more cruel than killing them. Especially if they are considered to be irredeemable monsters. I despise how people consider death to be a black and white scenario, when in reality it's more complicated than that.

Wow you had me for the first 35 minutes I was like screaming at my screen it’s not about your specific factors for how “good” a game is it goes beyond these aesthetics, and then the break through I really respect your introspection and figuring out your own implicit biases that is a hugely important part of living and seeing you go through this in some small way really was beautiful. I like watching you because you think hard about things and seeing that here was great.

In a way, Undertale does have a morale choice.
People who choose genocide route do generally out of curiosity, right? But what is more messed up, killing someone because you thought it was the right choice, or killing someone because "you wanted to see what would happen". (Sans even mentions this in the genocide run)
The game breaks the 4th wall on multiple occasions, and so do some of the characters.

    • @arifybush1203

Highgrove The video didn’t disagree with that, it just pointed out that the only choices that really affect how your story plays out are the big ones with how many monsters you kill. in other choice based games, even tiny choices have huge consequences.

This actually personally demonstrates what I see as Undertale's major flaw. "What is more messed up, killing someone because you thought it was the right choice, or killing someone because "you wanted to see what would happen"?" falls apart on itself because it forces you to see Undertale as a video game. And then you have to ask the question "is it immoral to 'kill' a video game character?" And the answer is an obvious no....
The meta side of Undertale kills it for me...

Asriel too, btw. He got to the point of killing everyone just like a main char just because he grew tired of trying to befrend everyone when he was a not emotionally invested flower with a power of save-load. He just was out of options and was interested in "what if i do this ?". Btw, that is a part of original story. And if that part of character development throught parallels with player is not awesome enouth to consider this game awesome, i don't know what is

8:56 just pointing out the no mercy run and genocide run are 2 different things. No mercy is when you just spare no one, in genocide you have to actively seek out every random encouter and kill them. No mery is more comparible to the neutral playthrough than the genocide because of how vastly different the story is in genocide

when your friend is part of the fanbase, and your friend loves undetale too much, and your friend won't ever shut up about it, and your friend makes you listen to the sound track, and also buys the game for you, and doesn't want to do anything except make you play it when he comes over... does that count as "the fanbase made me hate it"?

I really like how you analyze undertale, you broke it down nicely and you pointed out the flaws which granted in any game there is. Personally I like undertale because I have a deep connection to this game and I love the characters. I've made friends due to this game and it's really nice. Also personally I think the back rooms could look use more effort. This goes back to your point that undertale doesn't look the prettiest. But it comes back with its charm

I wasn't expecting that ending at all, but I'm really happy to see a kindred soul! I never mulled over it like you did, but I always disliked "quirky" things even if they were creative, and always preferred down-to-earth scenarios and premises instead. I don't feel the same catharsis as you did when you figured it out, but I'm still very glad to hear that I'm not the only one that dislikes that kind of originality.

I think it mainly has to do with the blend of memorable characters, and the air of mystery behind things. There are a ton of plot threads that arent left hanging per say, but they dont really have a definitive answer, like most of FNaF's stuff. Those two things mixed together just, explode for fandom stuff. Homestuck had it, FNaF has it, Undertale has it, and the newest fandom phenomenon, or "Fandonomenon" lel, 17776, has it.

I managed to play this game before it got REALLY huge. Some of my friends played it, recommended that I play it and told me to look up nothing about it beforehand. I played it, and had quite a great time. I enjoyed the quirky humor and how it emphasized empathy through it's gameplay. The music is really great, as you mentioned, and I would love listening to it. I think my timing of playing the game and hardly ever participating in the fandom really lead me to enjoying this game. I was in my own little bubble, not being influenced by hype or hate over the game.

The act choices are no different than like... trying different spells in Persona 3-5 until you find an enemies weakness. it's the same concept, just differently worded and the text effect is different. The combat is fine.

    • @jmiquelmb
      @jmiquelmb 7 лет назад

Loffter I think the same Toby confirmed he based the dialogue system from Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. I mean, if you play SMT: Strange Journey it's basically that. You dialogue or you kill. Difference is that the mechanics in that game are much more solid but less accessible. Also you can collect them like Pokemon and fuse them. Undertale can be finished with almost no effort given that you're decent playing bullet hell, and this is one of the keys of it's success.

With undertale, I quickly lost interest in it and, although I wouldn't call it a bad game necesarily, I felt it to be overhyped and ultimately kinda disappointing. In fact, if I hadn't seen such postive reviews before playing it myself, it is possible that I wouldn't have enjoyed the game at all; it just wasn't my cup of tea though I can see the appeal. I don't hate playing it, but there are many games more suited for my personal tastes.

Narrative that flows real well, gameplay that's pretty neat and a good twist on normal rpg's, characters that are quirky and some people gravitate a lot too, really great music, something fresh and an overall unique experience, different runs that can flip the game on its head, again the music because it's seriously good, the graphics has nice nostalgia to it, and a lot of funny moments that stem from similar humor we see in a majority of anime.
