I've been approaching portraits from doing a B&W painting underneath; and then adding colour afterwards. This process looks more akin to the traditional process which I'm comfortable with, so I look forward to giving this a go. I also find colour selection in digital overwhelming, so I appreciate you breaking down the digital technical aspect of composing a pallet. I feel like ever since I started teaching myself digital art, that I've been buffeted around by different advices and unsure which voices to listen to. So this video is helpful for my clarity, and I appreciate seeing the under drawing. It's a kind of drawing I'm used to doing myself.
Years ago, a teacher said--for beginner's figure painting--use mixtures of ultramarine blue, burnt umber and titanium white. This is exactly what you just unpacked (since burnt umber is an orange-brown, ultramarine blue is a complement, and white tints both). Now I understand why. Thanks!
Thank you for showing your whole process! I really learned a good chunk of info from your video. I really like the style you have developed, everything is very practical looking, I feel like I'm looking at an oil painting. I haven't considered using smaller brushes to break up the color and add texture to my renderings before I think I might give it a shot! Thanks again and keep crushing it Duuuuude 🤘😤
Hey Chris, thanks for this! I`ve made so many false-starts in the past, and just gave in to always painting in greyscale then coloring it after; I think this tut will help me start painting color from the get-go!
I like the way you kind of draw a palette on your art board like that. I've got some fun palettes downloaded like Zorn and some other minimal palettes. I like the idea of taking the oil set and building 5 or 6 colors on the paper, then using them to sample, just like you would using oil as a medium. Or watercolor for that matter. Going to enjoy exploring this process. Using the color color to build areas of shadow, then building in the base color, then main areas of shadow, then blood darkened, then highlights.... Feels good.
thank you, i learn through your lesson but i am using Ibis Paint X on a mobile phone. having drawn on pen and paper and gouache you are good translating traditional techniques to digital
This video is very informative. My one question is, how should I approach the fact that the sketch looks so different from the finished piece. Like should I not follow the sketch exactly and be more loose with how the shapes turns out to be?
I drew the whole drawing process from this video. But it was sad that you skipped big part of drawing process at the end and showed only the result. Because you skipped a part, I can't continue my drawing
Today I was recommended this channel and what can I say except that this video it's some of the simplest, yet helpful tutorial I ever seen. Thanks Chris.
Great video :) As a beginner who learns the basics and wants to try digital painting, I would like to know - how to start drawing in a graphics program, do I start learning right away with colors or is it best to start without colors?
Boi legit this tutorial was SUPER helpful!*0* I never thought of using orange as a base, but I tried it out and it works beautifully! Also!:0 I really like the colors you used ,and I was wondering if I could use colors that are similar? If not, I totally understand!
The values will depend on the lighting and local color of the skin. The key is to make sure there is enough difference in value so that the shadow is clearly separate from the lit side. In this example if the base color is 50% brightness, and the shadows are around 25%. Hope that helps.
This looks like an oil on canva painting 😮 I'm struggling with what art will I focus more on, cause I'm good at traditional art and learning digital but need to focus on one thing right?
Dude you just cut to having blocked in contrast without showing how you choose the contrast. I need help on like..everything without assumed colour knowledge :(
"Adding gradients" was super helpful to me😌, thank you so much for this tutorial ❤️
Welcome. Glad it's helpful. Please share the video too :)
This must've been the most useful tutorial I've ever watched. You make everything make sense, thank you!
thank you so much. Color is fun if you take it in small bite size lesson. Please share the video if it was helpful :)
I agree this is the most useful tutorial I’ve ever watch well explained and the whole process make sense for me now
Thank you. Glad it was helpful
Gonna want to check his old digital color course, you will be mind blown
SAME FOR ME
6 minutes watching this equals half a year of my self-study. Enlighten. Thank you for your ted talk 🙏
Thank you so much. Simplicity is often the best teacher :)
I know dude seriously a good teacher is good teacher. I started learning as soon the video started.
While not what I was looking to do I found this to be incredibly informative and filled with tools to use in other projects. Well done.
Thank you 🙏

Correct! Burnt sienna as well. My core philosophy is translating real painting to digital ✍️🎨
I think the shadow lay in is very helpful. I breakdown the shadows a little too early and have too many tones then i start getting discouraged.
Keeping things simple is generally a good practice :)

Oml this is easy to do for beginners thankss so much I'll try it out 👀🏃
Thank you. Gradients are powerful 💪
Thanks man, always added a single hue as my base colour, and it comes out really flat and odd looking.
That's a good start but all colors and shapes need gradation of color/value.
Where can I download this program? I can't seem to find it on Google
I love the way you teach it really helps me innerstand
Thank you 🙏
Wow. I've never thought it like this before! This grabbed me from the very beginning.

That's the information I was looking for for 1 year.
Glad it was helpful ✍️
Amazing, that's was awesome, and I think digital painting is easier somehow from traditional painting.
This video is very informative. My one question is, how should I approach the fact that the sketch looks so different from the finished piece. Like should I not follow the sketch exactly and be more loose with how the shapes turns out to be?
Thank you 🙏 this video is about starting directly in color. How to progress and finish is another topic.
Hey man thanks for helping. Could you share with us what brushes did you use?
thank you for the video !! Hope you're well

Normally how much should I change the value and saturation of the base color to find its shading and highlight colors?
The values will depend on the lighting and local color of the skin. The key is to make sure there is enough difference in value so that the shadow is clearly separate from the lit side. In this example if the base color is 50% brightness, and the shadows are around 25%. Hope that helps.
