At the end of it i spent more time for details , now i cant believe i did a perfect portrait with just putting pigments one by one. This is the first YT channel I have encountered that talks about how to paint. I digital paint but learned from watching traditional artists and translated what I saw to digital myself over the 2020 pandemic when I had all the time in the world. Most digital painting channels go for clout or just show what the tools can do without trying to build the persons actual skill. Then we have these beginning artists not knowing certain skills that would help them build. Their foundation is weak due to not having seen the right information.
    What is in this video was the first 6-8 months of me trying to learn how to digital paint. That info is critical. It builds some type of foundation for any beginning artist to follow. Without that foundation, supplementing new concepts or ideas might be difficult. I didn't use any of the tools or digital art for 1 year so I could learn how to fix things without them. This is why it is important to DO and not simply just watch. After 1 year I got decent and posted a timelapse painting of a self-portrait. Not the best but I wanted to start a YT channel but bailed on that idea. I decided to learn more about the fundamentals of art. Now my skills are better.
    I actually think this channel is amazing I wanted to do something like it, but I see you can explain it clearly and concisely and the setup is great. I'll subscribe, watch and comment for the channel growth.
    This is a real deal art channel.

      Thank you for your words! I'm so glad to hear that. I love both traditional paint (oil paints) and digital, so my process for traditional painting comes into my digital approach as well. I haven't really done Portraits before.
    I have done Something Like portraits for Fantasy characters/critters. But they are usually more sketchy and not well realistic like your doing.
    I was wondering if i can learn from this to help with the more fantasy side of my portraits or incorperate the technique. 🤔
    I guess it's time to go back to basics and relearn and try this out! c:

    Do you have some general rules about using certain values/hues in certain parts of the process besides leaving the highlights towards the end?

    • @gabriellebrickey
      @gabriellebrickey  4 месяца назад +1

      There are a couple approaches I've used over the years. Back when I could paint from life, we'd get everything up on the canvas- finding the darkest dark, the lightest light, and the most saturated color and making sure they're put down. I thought this was a good approach for blocking in and finding the hierarchy. Another approach you can use is to paint in mostly mid-tones. (Like the medium values of the piece.) Then at the end pop in dark accents- darkest darks and highlights. I've found both of these approaches useful and they are worth trying out. Nowadays, I tend to just use shapes of value. Not particularly focused on order, but I do tend to leave the little sparkle highlights for the end. I find if you give them too much attention in the beginning, they lose their specialness and the painterly quality.

  • @almost_harmless

    Enjoyed the tutorial very much, as I am more into line work than painting, and this was just the thing to make my confidence in going line-free.
    Also. What's with this fascination for faces. And no, I am not judging you, because I do this too. I love a pretty/interesting/storytelling face probably to the point that it could be a bit creepy for some if I see a face I like 😅... but honestly, I just adore faces. They tell you so much and yet so little of the person inside.

    • @gabriellebrickey
      @gabriellebrickey  7 месяцев назад +1

    • @gabriellebrickey
      @gabriellebrickey  14 дней назад

      It's pulled from a class, so no! I didn't mention it here. But what you'll do if you want to do this is duplicate your reference and then on the duplicated reference, go to Adjustments> Gaussian Blur> then slide your finger horizontally across your iPad to apply the level of blur you want. :) This is great for eliminating details in the reference and seeing the "big picture" :) Painting these more important shapes will help you make a great piece with good composition that reads well from a distance!

      I create a new canvas, 3500 by 5000, 300dpi. Then I insert the photo on the left. Then I duplicate the photo and drag it over to the right. (Keeping magnetic and snapping on so its the exact size.) Then I alpha lock that 2nd layer on the right, by swiping right on the layer with two fingers and pressing alpha lock. Then I color it in with a biiiig brush so it's that flat color that you see. Then I have two rectangles, side by side, which are the exact size. (this makes it so much easier to get the correct proportions!) The photo on the left, the soon to be painting on the right. Then I start painting :)

    Literally deleted a portrait that i was doing of my girlfriend. I know it doesnt have to be perfect (especially after years of not drawing or painting), i still cant get over it. I feel like
    I fell so hard. I literally have a portrait of a tiger that I did back in 10th grade ten years ago thats actually pretty good and I just keep comparing myself to that. It’s rough 😂

      I hear you! We all paint good ones and bad ones throughout our lives. It happens to me too. I made some bad art the other day lol- it happens!! If you love it though, keep going. You'll get better as you move forward with continuous effort!

    Если у вас нет большого опыта в рисовании портретов, то даже и не пытайтесь использовать такую технику без линейного наброска, разочаруетесь в результате!!!

    Working with paint is completely different than this

    • @gabriellebrickey
      @gabriellebrickey  3 месяца назад

      It would depend I think. I use similar techniques when oil painting. Sometimes I'll make a light sketch first with turpentine and a little paint first. But then after that, I approach the big shapes in the same way. It might just depend on your process and specific medium.

    What’s the point of color picking ? Artist do not need to draw a shape only, they need to understand what color they are using, why and how ? There’s nothing to learn from that
    I get that you have the background knowledge but giving that idea to beginner is not a good idea. Understanding colors and training your eyes to be as accurate as possible can take a lot of time depending on the people so i think they should try and learn it as soon as they can and avoid color picking entirely

    • @gabriellebrickey
      @gabriellebrickey  7 месяцев назад +1

      That's a fair point. I actually think the best way to learn color though is from painting from life. And probably with a traditional medium, where you can learn to mix too. With making art, you are balancing learning SOOOO many things all at once. I think its fine to let certain elements of design take a back seat while we focus on others- like value, shape, space, etc. Color is a beast and deserves its own class that this lesson wasn't going to cover. Towards the end of the video, you will hear I give a warning about the color picker- Eventually the color picker won't be quite as helpful anymore. Because there are so many colors in this reference image, it's hard to pick up the exact colors every time. Eventually, you'll have to go off the colors that actually ended up in your painting and shift to new colors from there. (Meaning, you'll have to have knowledge of color and value.) All of this takes times to develop. I do have classes on color though, so I respect the colors lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
