Leyendecker is my favorite artist of all time. The colors, the gooeyness of his strokes, and the confidence of his angles is everything I aspire to while working!
He's definitely one of mine too for all those reasons you brilliantly put (gooeyness 👌🏻) and for just evoking the period and exuding coolness too. Thanks for watching!🙌
@philgallowaydraws you want messy, my line art shares a certain likeness to a black hole 😅 I've all but given up on line art and just jump right into painting the piece lol, lines give me too much desire to draw details
@@umbreoniteUwU hahah you're right, they do constrain the artist a bit to stay within the guides. For this illustration it works but I love going rogue myself and splashing the paint on and seeing where we get to. Will make videos using that alla prima approach too soon. Thanks again and good luck with your art!👍
For those looking to make the leap from traditional to digital, and are a bit perplexed by the terms that programs like Photoshop uses ( I know I was, anyways), ArtRage is wonderful in that it uses terms more familiar to a traditional artist. Highly recommend, super easy to jump right in on and use, and also amazingly robust when it comes to creating your own brushes and stencils. Great work Phil, absolutely nailed the Leyendecker look, and a spot on likeness of Carmy!
Thank you so much, lovely to hear! Totally agree with you about Artrage, great gateway into digital art. Simple to learn and use basic tools but enough depth to really refine for the more heavy/ professional user too. Still feels the most intuitive and natural using the oil paint out of all the digital art programs out there. Looking forward to future updates. Thanks again and cheers for watching! 🙌
It blew my mind that Leyendecker inspired Norman Rockwell. I hadn't even heard of him before, but one look at his art and I immediately understood why he's been such an influential artist. Great job in emulating his style!
Leyendecker was huge until about 1940. He created the "Arrow Collar Man" which was such a popular figure that women wrote letters to Leyendecker offering marriage to the model, unaware that it was Charles Beach, his boyfriend. he had an older brother who also worked in the same style. His brother became a heroin addict and killed himself.
Leyendecker is my favorite artist. The first time I saw his work I was so captivated by his techniques! I really feel like he’s an artist’s artist, and once a painter or illustrator sees his work it’s transformative.
I totally agree, he's been one of my favourites for years. Not enough people know of him, hopefully this video can help amend that a little and I hope I did his style justice!
Thank you glad you liked it. I loved The Bear, so had to do something connected. May come back and do more in the future, especially when season 3 rolls around!🙌
I lost my love for painting and digital painting a while ago. I just wasn't doing as well as I wanted with it and felt I was making no progress. Watching you paint this just reminded me that when I started painting it was for fun. It was not worrying about the right colours at the moment and getting it right the first time, cause it meant I could try it again. Thank you for posting this.
This is genuinely lovely to hear thank you. So glad the videos helped, I do hope you keep painting and creating, there's an old saying "Man suffers only because he takes seriously what the gods made for fun." Good luck and keep it fun!
leyendecker's art is so beaautiful, i love the big bold brushstrokes and the hatching and you captured that so perfectly!!! my absolute favourite way leyendecker did things was the hair. idk what it is about it but i absolutely love the way he painted hair.

Amazing exhibit of Leyendecker art in NYC earlier this year (focusing on coded/hidden homoerotic messages). Wonderful to see it in person at NYC Historic Society.

Probably the best art process video I’ve seen on RUclips right here~. Not only do I get you see you make something amazing, I also got learn a bit about Leyendecker! So glad this video was recommended to me! I love how you brought us a nice little history lesson as well, something I always appreciate. Instant subscriber here. From one artist to another - well done! I can't wait to see your future work! 😊
That's lovely to hear thank you so much! Yup got to have a bit of art history in there, my old tutors would kill me if I didn't! Thanks for the subscribe and kind words.
Great example on how to study an artist or style. I would like to see this same concept done with other great illustrators like NC Wyeth or Rockwell. Insane work, well done!
I loved your interpretation of Layendecker’s style. I’m currently studying his paintings-digitally as well and unlike other studies I did before, Layendecker’s have been the most joyful and interesting to paint! I never knew Norman Rockwell was inspired by him,, it makes sense though. I’ve always mixed up their artworks. Great job, again, you earned a new subscriber.
Uwwwaaaaaaaah i didn't know such a magnificient program existed! I had so many oroblems finding a adequate orofram ever since u've git myself a new tablet! I will give this a try thanks! Your taste in art is magnificient as well! I will definitely will make sure to check them out for future ref. I want to improve my style so i am in search nowdays.
I still find it mind blowing to see how Rockwell and Leyendecker can just direct your eyes exactly where they want you to, everything from the coffee pot and pan handle to the drawstrings of the dudes apron to the folds of the shirt on the shoulder to the bottom left of the note and its shadow (ect..) it’s all pointing directly to focal points where he wants you to look. The salt and pepper shaker as well as the man’s spiked hair at the front signal the end of the painting pointing up as a kind of “exit” for your eyes to wander off of the painting. Like how in the actual hell do you just take all of these things into account when composing the image? I guess a good way is to try and remind yourself as often as possible like a mantra when doing this in your own images.
Great analysis! Yup he was a master at leading the viewer round the painting and to the areas he wants you to go much like the High Renaissance/Baroque Masters did. Thanks for watching and cheers for getting in touch🙌
Many thanks, the term is more commonly known for architecture but it did start to merge into fantastical merging of people and scenes. This may be a loose representation of it but it was fun and lovely to hear people are liking it. I think I'll do more! Thanks again
so glad I found your channel. Enjoyed your process and it was refreshing to see you using Art rage instead of other industry standard programs. You're also making me consider a surface vs a wacom. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I like other art programs but always think to use Artrage first for client work as the paint just works! Oof tough decision, I couldn't get on with a wacom and loved the surfaces from the early days but both great machines! Good luck and cheers again 👍
Never really got into Art Rage after moving over to Rebelle, which I love and use for most of my work, but tempted to give it another go after watching this.
i love this piece!!! a fantastic study! Im not sure if you're looking for video ideas but i'd be very interested in a video on how you structure / draw your faces!!
that def looks like it could be Leyendeker piece, the colours and the big hands are perfect. and so glad you included the tomato can, cant really create an artwork of Carmy without them😀 so glad its neem remewed for a third season, just hoping they can keep up with the character development without getting boring for some people
Thank you! Yup the tomato can had to be there!😂 I can't wait for the third season, same worries as you but was worried before season 2 and it blew me away so fingers crossed. Cheers again!🙌👍
yeah i thought they did a better job with the second season then the first, and the Christmas episode was great, love how they had it filmed/acted like most family events go, bickering and yelling but also a family together
@@fuzzydragons oh the Christmas episode was genius, so so good. Tense and stressful just like a family Christmas! Love Forks episode too, great character development. We'll see for season 3, I'll be tuning in!
It was a big life. He had a posh studio off Bryant Park and a big house in New Rochelle, supposedly the model for Gatsby. Beach, his boyfriend was a very controling person who cut him off from his friends and family until they two lived in total isolation. Invitations went out to his memorial but by then beach had alienated so many people that only N Rockwell and Leyendecker's sister attended.
This looks amazing Phil!! I love the image from start to finish. Although it would've been cool to use the background of the image from The Bear series of the kitchen.
Thank you! Yup, I thought about changing it up more but was worried it would lose the flatness of Leyendecker's work if I added too much depth to the illustration. It could've looked cool though! Thanks again, really glad you like it. More videos coming soon. 🙌👍
This is really cool and now I want to watch The Bear as cooking is my other hobby. I have Artrage, too, though I use Krita more. I should try some more stuff with Artrage if it can do this.
Thank you! Definitely watch the bear, amazing show but does make me hungry! The best thing to do with Artrage is experiment and have a play, it really is fantastic. I need to try Krita, so may review that in time too. Cheers again!
I've seen several originals of Leyendecker a few hours north of me from Los Angeles, in Stockton (not Fresno), CA. They should still be there at the Haggin Museum. They were amazing, and you can view the details up close. I've also seen Rockwell originals (they're huge, like the size of a wall) and Mucha exhibit in the 90's. All amazing! Your tutorial looks great!
I'm an illustrator who lives in the area you mentioned. Just looked it up, the Haggin Museum is in Stockton (unfortunately still 2 hours North of Fresno.)
this is an awesome painting style, i'm really excited to try it out! the way you sketched the image and then imposed the head on top was incredible to me, i'll definitely have to try that in the future
Thank you for the wonderful Video!!Can you Show us your artist Setup, The device you are using. Just starting with digital art and Love the Way your Desk is Organized. Greetings From Germany😊🎉
Massive thanks! I will definitely be doing a video on my set-up, desk and studio in the near future but for now the device I was using is the Surface Studio 2 running Artrage Vitae (which is half price at the moment!). I used my old iPad pro to have reference images up on it and for music whilst I worked. Thanks again, lovely to hear! 🙌
You are also good but don't get me wrong he is another level. I've seen a lot of people who are trying to paint like him including masters but no, no one has achieved that. He is unique. Peace and Love ✌
Oh yes, I'm in no way trying to better him or even get close, that's why he's a legend and I'm merely paying homage and hopefully teaching a little and helping people more with digital art. He is indeed unique! Thanks though 👍🙌
8:40 Same reason I don't use any of these methods. Everyone's drawings look very similar and it feels like I'm doing Math or something I have to memorise. I just observe and make lines until it's correct.
Totally each to their own and whatever works for people is cool with me but it never seemed to make sense in my head. I follow certain rules or guides sketching things but generally use my eye and tweak until right like you. Definitely don't like using digital tools to move things or resize, feels very unnatural and one more step away from 'real' mediums. Thanks for watching 🙌👍
Splendid job on this piece. I couldn't agree more with your appraisal of the show. I have two tattoos inspired by the Bear; one for each season. Do you sell prints of your work?
Thank you so much! A lot of people have been asking about prints, will definitely look into it in the new year and may well do a limited edition run of prints of this. Cheers again, lovely to hear others as passionate about the show as me!👍
Many thanks! Do you mean the brushes? If so it was the stock Artrage oil brush, with loading at about 9-11 and no thinners. Round tip brush and 50%stiffness I think. The pencil was from a set called Daub but I don't think you can get them anymore. The stock Artrage pencils work just fine for sketching in. Hope that helps!
Hi Mr Phil! Are your brushes avaliable for download?? The sketch one even for a sketch looks so nice! And this video is a fantastic idea! we need more tutorials like that!
Thank you so much. The oil paint brush was the stock Artrage brush just tweaked in the settings on loading and no thinners used. The Daub pencil brushes I'm not sure if they are still available. If you Google Daub brushes Artrage you can find them on gumroad but I'm not sure if the link still works and I don't want to link it here in case it fails. The Daub pencil is good but the Artrage stock one would do fine for the prep sketch. Thanks again!
Amazing work! I have a feeling your channel is going to be huge. With all this AI art uncertainty it's a breath of fresh air to see such a strong style. I definitely saw the Norman Rockwell influence in this art and I had never heard of Leyendecker before. Glad I found this!
Many thanks! Yes I may do some prints of it soon. I'll keep you posted but also keep an eye on my website www.philgallowaydraws.co.uk Once I meet the threshold to link my shop on RUclips I'll set that up too. Cheers again, so glad you like it!
If I have to start learning digital painting on your page, where should I start from for Art rage Vitae? I'm doing fairly well with pen on paper but I have a couple of ideas I want to bring to life I the digital space.
Just have a look through the longer process ones would be the best starting point, the main thing to do is experiment and have fun, not to worry too much about the end result initially. Wishing you the best of luck with it!
Ahh that's great to hear thank you! Hmm not too sure, but looking back through the edits it must have been about 6 or 7 hours. I usually work a tad quicker, but took my time on it as had spare time to make the video and wanted to get it bang on. My next one is hopefully coming in a day or two (had client work this last two weeks!) and was much quicker coming in at about 4 hours. Cheers again
Very very similar in so many ways but also unique in others. I love Rockwell too, definitely will be doing a video on him soon. Many thanks for watching!🙌
Nice video! What device are you working on? It looks interessting. I work with an Wacom Intous + Macbook or on an Ipad pro with Procreate. But I think about to get something like an Cintiq or something that is a little bit cheaper :D
Many thanks! This was created using a Surface Studio 2, the folding down screen in the video. Awesome to work on and very flexible depending on usage. I use an iPad pro from time to time with procreate and have a surface laptop studio for when I'm traveling. I've never used a cintiq, keep me posted what you choose and how you get on! Cheers again 👍
I love the painting/drawing experience on the Ipad. Normally I draw and ink on the Ipad in Procreate and color it in Photoshop on the Mac. But drawing/painting straight on a big screen would be the next step for me. I'll have a look on the Surface devices. Keep up the good work :). @@philgallowaydraws

Ahh that's great to hear, many thanks! New videos coming soon 🙌
I would love your drawing as a print!! it’s so pretty :)
Thank you! I may well do a print run of it some day, keep an eye on my website in case it happens👍
Thanks for the subscribe and kind words.
i love this so much really inspired me to try this style of painting
Thank you so much, definitely check out more of Leyendecker he's an absolute master and a great artist to learn techniques from. Good luck!
Beautiful job!
Thank you so much!🙌
Great example on how to study an artist or style. I would like to see this same concept done with other great illustrators like NC Wyeth or Rockwell. Insane work, well done!
Thank you so much, lovely to hear. I'll definitely do similar videos in the future.
Meeeeessi!
Ahh that's great to hear and thanks for the subscribe. He is definitely fun and interesting to paint!
Fantastic to hear, Artrage is a great program definitely worth giving it a go and having a play with all the tools. Many thanks
I still find it mind blowing to see how Rockwell and Leyendecker can just direct your eyes exactly where they want you to, everything from the coffee pot and pan handle to the drawstrings of the dudes apron to the folds of the shirt on the shoulder to the bottom left of the note and its shadow (ect..)
it’s all pointing directly to focal points where he wants you to look.
@@philgallowaydrawsanytime! You did an incredible study I can’t wait to see more awesome videos!
Ahh thank you so much, lovely to hear! More videos coming soon 👍
@@philgallowaydraws can’t wait!🤘🔥
I had no idea 'Capriccio' was the name for this style I've admire fantasy style illustration art for years!! Great video!! ☺
Great to hear! Definitely worth a go, I've pre-ordered the new Rebelle 7 so will be checking that out for the first time. Many thanks 👍
@@philgallowaydraws I love the oils and watercolours in Rebelle.
Muito bom!! Amei!!
Huge thanks!!
i love this piece!!! a fantastic study! Im not sure if you're looking for video ideas but i'd be very interested in a video on how you structure / draw your faces!!
Ahh that's great to hear thank you so much! Will definitely be doing a video about drawing faces soon! 👍
good tut
Thank you!🙌
that def looks like it could be Leyendeker piece, the colours and the big hands are perfect. and so glad you included the tomato can, cant really create an artwork of Carmy without them😀 so glad its neem remewed for a third season, just hoping they can keep up with the character development without getting boring for some people
Oh I'd love the chance to see them. Next time I'm in America of if there's an exhibition in the UK I'm there! Many thanks!
I'm an illustrator who lives in the area you mentioned. Just looked it up, the Haggin Museum is in Stockton (unfortunately still 2 hours North of Fresno.)
@@andersonprimer oh sorry , yea Stockton. I always get it mixed up.
@@ryanodagawa Haha I was excited for a second to hear that it was nearby
this is an awesome painting style, i'm really excited to try it out! the way you sketched the image and then imposed the head on top was incredible to me, i'll definitely have to try that in the future
Ahh that's great to hear, let me know how you get on as it's a fun process splicing two figures together. Thanks again!
@@philgallowaydraws🥰thanks so much for your Message!!Have a lovely evening. Looking forward to your videos😊
@@colletteausnrw4750 you're very welcome, you too! Finishing some client work this week then getting the next video out soon. Thanks again!🙌
Idk why but this artstyle made me geel some typaway
In a good way? Hopefully so!
Cheers again, lovely to hear others as passionate about the show as me!👍
Leyendecker: A gay Icon!
Lovely work indeed ❤Could you list all the tools you used to paint?
Many thanks! Do you mean the brushes? If so it was the stock Artrage oil brush, with loading at about 9-11 and no thinners. Round tip brush and 50%stiffness I think. The pencil was from a set called Daub but I don't think you can get them anymore. The stock Artrage pencils work just fine for sketching in. Hope that helps!
@@philgallowaydraws thank you so much for this! Very helpful ☺️
That's amazing to hear and means a lot thank you so much! Keep an eye out for a Rockwell one soon ......
You emulated the style very well! It’s also interesting to see a man who has a bit of a weaker chin rather than a chiseled jaw line
Is that my chin or Carmy's?😂 Thank you so much, lovely to hear!
@@philgallowaydraws no, Camry!! 💀 💀
I know!😂 Thanks again
i now wish the show was called "the amazing bear"
Would be very fitting!
I wanted to ask, what is the desktop computer you use?
I like that it can switch it’s position for drawing.
It's the Microsoft Surface Studio 2, it's lovely to work on and runs smoothly.
Great work. Any chance this piece is available to purchase online, would love to put this on my wall?
Awesome illustration! Very inspiring, how long did the painting take you in real time?
Ahh that's great to hear thank you! Hmm not too sure, but looking back through the edits it must have been about 6 or 7 hours. I usually work a tad quicker, but took my time on it as had spare time to make the video and wanted to get it bang on. My next one is hopefully coming in a day or two (had client work this last two weeks!) and was much quicker coming in at about 4 hours. Cheers again
I was wondering if he was mentor to Norman Rockwell - my earliest favorite artist as a child art student.
As a gay man myself, I can tell you exactly why JC L made men's hands so big and detailed
😂😂 you are most likely right sir. Thanks for watching🙌
