Big fan of your art Phil. Thanks for sharing your workflow and strategies. I’m sometimes lazy and tend to sample directly from the canvas. This leads to gradual desaturation and loss of contrast, requiring intermediate corrections (contrast, curves, saturation). I see you work a lot with an external palette, and I think that’s the right approach… I wish I had your consistency! 😅
Ahh thank you Paolo means a lot to hear. I try and keep my approach to digital art as close to using real paint and mediums as possible as my head just doesn't work in a digital way hence the colour selection method. More videos coming soon if no jobs come through in the meantime!😂 Cheers again sir
such a cool take on Leyendecker! plus I love The Bear
Thank you so much!🙌
u inspired me
this is my dream room and workspace i hope i can save and build like that
Thank you so much lovely to hear! Wishing you well
Found this to be absolutely lovely. :) I'll give a digital Enso a go to start out my day tomorrow. Cheers.
Ahh that's lovely to hear thank you! Hope it goes well and you enjoy the process 👍
leyendecker's art is so beaautiful, i love the big bold brushstrokes and the hatching and you captured that so perfectly!!! my absolute favourite way leyendecker did things was the hair. idk what it is about it but i absolutely love the way he painted hair.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I love the way he painted hair too, captured the locks, flow and shine effortlessly. Thanks for watching!
Your Channel is brilliant, keep up
Thank you so much!
Great presentation! I've been researching ways to digitally paint clouds. I'm keeping your video as a reference. Could you provide the color codes you used? Cheers!
Thank you so much, lovely to hear you enjoyed it! Good luck with your cloud paintings, I'll be definitely making more in this series for other types of clouds and times of day etc. Cheers again!
Hmm for the colours I initially picked a selection of blues and creams and then a few hues with a more green tint and a few pure whites for the highlights. Unfortunately on Artrage it doesn't use colour codes as I picked off the colour wheel. Experiment with your colours and you'll find a palette that works for you.
You made me discover an incredible artist and his story! thanks! I really like your inspirations and insights!
Ahh that's lovely to hear many thanks!
Leyendecker is my favorite artist of all time. The colors, the gooeyness of his strokes, and the confidence of his angles is everything I aspire to while working!
He's definitely one of mine too for all those reasons you brilliantly put (gooeyness 👌🏻) and for just evoking the period and exuding coolness too. Thanks for watching!🙌
Thanks you it was a nice video!
You're very welcome, thanks for watching!🙌👍
So Close to 10k!
Slow and steady growth is fine with me but it's a nice milestone to hopefully hit for sure!😂 Cheers 👍
So beautiful and professional! Waiting for more😃
Thank you so much, lovely to hear! More coming soon 🙌👍
Unbelievably impressive. Congrats.
Thank you so much, lovely to hear. Cheers for watching!🙌👍
Enjoyed watching your process, especially the charcoal at the end. So happy you discovered Reb7 and I'll look out of your Alla Prima, Thanks
Ahh fantastic to hear many thanks for watching! Been a bit busy with work so video slightly delayed but more coming hopefully soon. 👍
8:40 Same reason I don't use any of these methods. Everyone's drawings look very similar and it feels like I'm doing Math or something I have to memorise. I just observe and make lines until it's correct.
Totally each to their own and whatever works for people is cool with me but it never seemed to make sense in my head. I follow certain rules or guides sketching things but generally use my eye and tweak until right like you. Definitely don't like using digital tools to move things or resize, feels very unnatural and one more step away from 'real' mediums. Thanks for watching 🙌👍
Thank you - I avoid sketching faces but this has given me a bit more insight on how to crack it!
Ahh that's great to hear, hope it helps and you do indeed crack it. Thanks for watching!🙌
I cannot draw a stick man - thank you for a great tut.
You're very welcome and thank you for watching! 🙌
Great video! Such an amazing drawings. Thanks for tips about drawing process and showing that sometimes things don't go as we plan and that's fine. I wish to hear your story how you involved in digital art
Ahh many thanks, really lovely to hear! I'll be definitely doing a video about how I got started as a digital artist soon. Thanks again for watching 🙌👍
For those looking to make the leap from traditional to digital, and are a bit perplexed by the terms that programs like Photoshop uses ( I know I was, anyways), ArtRage is wonderful in that it uses terms more familiar to a traditional artist. Highly recommend, super easy to jump right in on and use, and also amazingly robust when it comes to creating your own brushes and stencils. Great work Phil, absolutely nailed the Leyendecker look, and a spot on likeness of Carmy!
Thank you so much, lovely to hear! Totally agree with you about Artrage, great gateway into digital art. Simple to learn and use basic tools but enough depth to really refine for the more heavy/ professional user too. Still feels the most intuitive and natural using the oil paint out of all the digital art programs out there. Looking forward to future updates. Thanks again and cheers for watching! 🙌
Sin duda he sido rudo y grosero al referir mi descontento, me disculpo con usted. Tiene razon, no son las formas.
Ahh thank you for that, no need to apologise at all. Always happy to take feedback both positive and negative, but there's always a good way of doing it. Thanks again, and hopefully some of my future videos will help and inform you a bit more on the art tutorial information. 👍
@@philgallowaydraws My suggestion would be to know how you set some tools, as you did with the oil brush at the beginning. As is the case with the Knife palette to soften the brush strokes and blend between shades. Without a doubt your comments on the history of art are enriching, but I miss "the technical part" of some parts of your work. And I must admit that I have learned about your style by doing another. Of course light years from you, but I'm doing it. I'm sorry for the bad start.
No worries at all. Will try and show more on the brush set up in future, I don't actually do much to the brushes in terms of tweaking it's more done on feel and softness of touch/pressure to get the desired mix or flow of the paint but I can definitely go into more detail in future on maybe a more technical tutorial rather than these fun mashups. Cheers again for understanding 👍
Is it wrong that I like your thumbnail showing the various stages more than the actual finished art?
Not wrong at all, I really like the way the thumbnail came together just as much too! 👍
@@philgallowaydraws I'm also a content creator, so I may have been drawn to it more than others
Ahh that's good to hear, I'm still very new to making RUclips videos so was making it up as I went along creating that thumbnail!😂 I thought it looked cool so nice that it caught your eye! Many thanks for watching and getting in touch👍
Knew about Leyendecker for about 5 years but just now found out that he's gay!!! +1 for the team :) <3
Great video, but.. the eye line feels off to me I feel like his head should be tilted up some so his eyesight is in line with the spoon. Not that it is necessarily wrong, but that it just makes it feel off for me. Looks like he staring off into the distance daydreaming. And not measuring out his coffee
Many thanks, yup I get that but I do quite like that he may well be daydreaming or stressing thinking about the restaurant like his character often does etc. cheers for the feedback and for watching!
So good to see you back! Cheers!
Ahh thank you, good to be back!
Ok but WHAT IS THAT TABLET?
The desktop pc I'm drawing on is the amazing Surface Studio 2.
Great fun watching you draw and talk about it. Helpful approach. Have enjoyed all your videos and look forward to more. How long have you had your Studio Pro 2? Any problems with overheating that have been reported?
Ahh that's great and lovely to hear thank you for watching! I've had the surface studio 2 for just under 4 years pretty much when it was released I think, absolutely no issues with it at all, love it for work and being creative. I have the surface laptop studio too but don't use that as much, really good machine too though.
@@philgallowaydraws Thanks!
I still find it mind blowing to see how Rockwell and Leyendecker can just direct your eyes exactly where they want you to, everything from the coffee pot and pan handle to the drawstrings of the dudes apron to the folds of the shirt on the shoulder to the bottom left of the note and its shadow (ect..) it’s all pointing directly to focal points where he wants you to look. The salt and pepper shaker as well as the man’s spiked hair at the front signal the end of the painting pointing up as a kind of “exit” for your eyes to wander off of the painting. Like how in the actual hell do you just take all of these things into account when composing the image? I guess a good way is to try and remind yourself as often as possible like a mantra when doing this in your own images.
Great analysis! Yup he was a master at leading the viewer round the painting and to the areas he wants you to go much like the High Renaissance/Baroque Masters did. Thanks for watching and cheers for getting in touch🙌
@@philgallowaydrawsanytime! You did an incredible study I can’t wait to see more awesome videos!

It's the Surface Studio 2 computer. Fantastic to work on. Many thanks for watching!
Wonderful video! Really enjoyed the tutorial and learned a ton, looking forward to more content!!
Ahh that's lovely and great to hear, many thanks for watching! More coming soon 🙌👍
Thank you so much for sharing your process with us- you have a very nice way of painting and it's a pleasure learning about art history at the same time! I'm on my second video of yours and in both you said that no one would want to sit watching you paint for five hours , and i just wanted to say i would happily do so, it would be some very nice companion videos to work to. It just feels nice to have someone painting at the same time as you 🥰 Thank you again for sharing all of this, your videos are a delight !
Ahh that is so nice to hear thank you so much. More long form videos coming soon 🙌👍
This is absolutely incredible! I'm so impressed and excited to see more of what you do. 🤩
Ahh that's lovely to hear thank you! More videos coming soon, client work has got in the way a bit this last week or so!😂 Check out some of my other ones to tide you over 👍
What I love is all this whining and crying of AI Art. But then you guys have no problem. Copying somebody else’s art style. If you do it with your hands like it’s any f different.
Artists have always learnt and copied the old masters and other contemporaries throughout all time to improve, develop and raise their art game hopefully and yes with their hands (or feet/mouth in some cases). But hey you guys keep prompting a computer to take others work and learning and then take the credit for yourself at the end. If that's what you class as art and being an artist, it's just sad. I am very explicit about my source references and processes and don't rob from artists and say it's mine. Ai as a reference tool and guide can be really helpful for some but claiming you've created something new and original is theft and again is really sad you're missing all the benefits of learning skills, the slow process benefits for mindfulness and mental health and reward of creating something 'with your own hands'. Any ol' fool can ask a computer to make something, there is a lot f different!😂 But thanks for watching 👍🏻
It’s always drove me crazy he doesn’t get the appreciation as an artist, not just an illustrator, that he deserves. Also Are you sure he was openly gay? From my understanding he was as openly gay as you could be in his day but wasn’t actually open.
I agree he totally doesn't get the appreciation. As far as I was aware through my research he was cited as being openly gay, but like you say it could've been as open as you could be back in those days. Interesting man and life for sure and a hell of an artist, one of my favourites. Hopefully with this video doing well he can get a little more appreciation. Thanks for watching!👍
i love this piece!!! a fantastic study! Im not sure if you're looking for video ideas but i'd be very interested in a video on how you structure / draw your faces!!
Ahh that's great to hear thank you so much! Will definitely be doing a video about drawing faces soon! 👍
Is there anyway to get a print of this?
There's been a few people asking about prints. I will try and look into it in the coming weeks, keep an eye on my website or I'll post a wee video saying they are available. Thanks for watching and the interest!🙌
Yes please do continue to make more Artrage tutorials. There aren't a ton of good, professional quality illustration tutorials using Artrage on YT. Great result btw.
Will do! Many thanks for watching🙌
Damn! Amazing painting 🔥🔥! Im watching your videos (seriously, all of them) and trying to applicated more "traditional paint" on my digital illustrations too. This is the fourth time that im watch this video. And yeah... i love Saltburn movie! Wish all of lucky in the world for you. From a brazillian fan 🙏
Thank you so much, this is really lovely to hear. So glad you're liking the videos, good luck with your art. Be bold and play with the textures and you'll get that look. Cheers again and see you on the next one!🙌🙏🏻
You're going too dark and with not delicacy on the details, thicker strokes, detail where there shouldn't be one, emphasizing shapes that shouldn't be there or at least with that much contrast, the tomato, the detail on the teapot with not weight on contrast other than the distracting detail away from the focus point and again to dark every where, a second monitor or at least a window should help you well for reading the canvas from distance if you don't like zooming in and out, I bet if you low the contrast in photoshop it would read better, -50 and watch the magic happen
Thanks for the feedback, I don't feel it's too dark or contrasty when compared directly to the original newspaper print by Leyendecker, but appreciate you taking the time to comment. It's never meant to be an exact copy, it's my version and me having a bit of fun whilst hopefully teaching a little about the artist, the film/TV show and the techniques used. Cheers again and thanks for watching 👍
@@philgallowaydraws No problem and to you for answering it, my english tends to read to strong because is my second language I'm aware of that, but in my intent to get the point across I tend to prioritize that. We desensitize ourselves from reading images or at least the details in the greys, using contrast is not bad but it tends to burn the image when is used on extremes, blacks being blacks and whites white, cold colors (values) do that, try to abstain yourself from it, what I do is not rushing to 100 even 85% to blacks or whites, I downplay it by 70 or 75%, then I add the detail contrast where I think it needs it, in low usage, Leyendecker used to use a lot of turpentine with the oils, basically making it almost a watercolor experience, with not much contrast, and of course his art deco style, prioritizing shapes over forms. Of course the exact copy is not the intent is the study over I get it, just hopes all this makes sense and serves you in your journey, try the -50 thing, in this piece the white background should wash out and give more body to sustain the objects and ground them in a place. Cheers to you to mate!
this is phenomenal! I love your insight and your commentary lots. it's always a joy watching your process, your art is amazing :^) I feel like it would be neat to take a look at maybe a more natural landscape-y painting? I love painting foliage and stylizing it, I find a lot of enjoyment in it. lots of opportunities to have fun with colors.
Thank you! Really lovely and great to hear. Landscapes etc are definitely on the horizon (pardon the pun!) Thanks again for watching and getting in touch 🙌
Hello, how do you smooth the colors from 22:30-23:27 can not understand it 😢
Hey there thanks for watching. To smooth the paint and blend the colours I used the palette knife tool from the tools bar and in the settings had it set to no loading so it only moved the paint on the canvas and didn't put any new paint down. A delicate touch can feather the paint together or a stronger stroke will push one colour over another if the paint is thick enough on the canvas. Hope that helps! 👍
I really like this format! Mashup wasn't the driving factor for me to watch (I have seen your ImagineFX Artrage video and followed you after that) but I love the art history segments as well as how it connects with the subject of your mashup! It's like watching a master study/copy but with an originality you are adding on top of it, its awesome. I hope this continues as a series as well as some new formats in the future!
Ahh that's fantastic to hear and great feedback thank you! Will definitely be doing more of these mash-ups along with a bit more standard tutorials and reviews etc plus some other ideas for the year ahead. Thanks for the support!🙌
