- We do a playthrough (gameplay demo) of the entire 3pm turn from Fire on the Mountain, the Battle of South Mountain, September 14, 1862, published by Legion Wargames and designed by John Poniske. US Civil War Wargame.
Known Errors
The penalty for assault fire uphill should be -1 die for each level of altitude crossed, and this penalty applies to each each that is firing. In this video, I subtract one for each hex firing and then subtract one more for each level of altitude.

Fire on the Mountain Gameplay | Legion Wargames | Wargame Historical Game | US Civil War
I hiked and camped in this area just a few years ago. The Appalachian Trail goes right through there. It really makes you aware that the area covered in these battles is much larger than it seems on a board game map.
That'd be a great place to explore, I bet. Great that you got to hike in it! I'm curious to see how hilly it is in real life.
Ooh I do like these rules! I know nothing of this battle but this presentation helped. As did the lovely map and counters, Nice and colourful! Lovely demo, thank you 👍
Thanks! It feels like a system that could apply to a good number of battles too.
@@ZillaBlitz yes I can certainly see that. And I think that shape of unit counter could be more utilised too
I really like the double-width counters, for sure. They really capture the feel of Civil War combat. :)
The prelude to Antietam. I've only ever been to one ACW battlefield and that is Gettysburg and been there numerous times. Love going down there as its not that far from my home. I need to get Into the Woods on the table asap. I keep getting sidetracked to reading the rules so I think I will just set up the table and get one of the small scenarios up and just read the rules and play as I learn the rules. Thanks for the review. I am a big ACW history buff and enjoy these games. I should suggest that you try to do what is called crossing the T. That was the overall goal in ACW battles was to keep moving to the flank to find the end of either army and turn it.
Crossing the T! Thanks, I have become study, noted for the future. Into the Woods looks good as well, and yeah, sometimes you just need to set the game up and start playing, learning as you go. I hope you enjoy it. :)
@@ZillaBlitz You are welcome. It does look good and I am going to do my best to get at least one of the small scenarios on the table today at some point. It should be a fun game to play.
I'd be curious to hear how you like it! :)
@@ZillaBlitz You got it! I'll let you know what I think when I can get it on the table.
Is there a prequel called Scarlet Begonias?
EDIT: irl I have eaten at a restaurant (South Mountain Inn) in the about the empty hex smack dab in the middle of the Confederates at the start of the video. The building itself was present during the battle, and was likely commandeered for some purpose.
Haha! Nicely played. :)
@@ZillaBlitz I'm just Playin' in the Band
And I'm just Truckin' still Sunrise.
@@ZillaBlitz Till the Morning Comes? Ok, I'm done.
Thanks for the video! I love the idea for the intro at the beginning and the style of your exposition after. Also, this gives me a good impression on the game, which looks light but quite rich in content and experience. This looks like a promising beginning for a new series of ACW titles on small and less famous battles.
Sure thing, Riccardo! I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I do think it could make for a fun series of smaller Civil War engagements, as they develop the system.
Hi zilla how are you
Good Ateeq, I hope you are well!
@@ZillaBlitz im good thanks
That was fun. As a few of the commenters have pointed out it does seem to get a little busy on the board, with so many units concentrated in the same places.
I think that may have been the way I played this game, and that's the busiest turn in the game. Once the reinforcements get scattered about it's less congested. Lots going on around Turner's Gap, for sure.
Looked a tad congested, from where I was viewing, but overall rather enjoyable. Are the rule issues a game distraction? Looking forwarded to the full review.
This turn is one of the busiest in the game, and I think the way I’ve played this game, I’ve kind of played the North into more of a frontal attack than I would have liked. I think going wider with them might make some sense. Not sure, yet.
I think I’ve got the rules largely sorted out now. It’s probably easier now that there are answers to questions up on Board Game Geek.
Do you script your videos? Your delivery is always so smooth that I assume you either write everything out ahead of time or you are just super comfortable speaking off the cuff.
Thanks, Marc! I don't script stuff, but especially for the introductions I might do as many as a half dozen takes for some parts. (I feel like the introductions should be quick and tight, so I tend to spend more time on them.)
For most of the other stuff, I pre-think for a little bit about what I want to do and then do it. Every once in a while I might redo something if I totally screw up the explanation and I realize it doesn't make sense. If that screw up involves a die roll, I always keep the original result (unless the die rolling was the screw up).
I'm not a super fan of pre-scripting. I know it works for others, but when I do it, it sounds clunky unless I memorize it.
@@ZillaBlitz The end result is good, regardless. Thanks for the peek behind the curtain :).
@@ZillaBlitz Your pronunciation is generally pretty good as well, which I appreciate.
Yes, I agree!
Thanks, Marc! Trying to take some time before starting to go over words when I can. :)
Rick Barber type/style map, was it one of his?
Yes, he's listed as one of the co-designers of the map, so perhaps he started working on it but unfortunately didn't get a chance to finish it.
Sorry 'Zilla this is unrelated to the game and is inclusive of all CIvil Wargames (IMO). WHy doesn't the North apply its 4 to 1 superiority in mapower 10 to 1 superiority in RR Industry and
naval to just crush the South whenever and wherever theyr'e to be found???
I think that's a great set of questions and I suspect many of the answers lie in a more strategic game of the Civil War, like Simonitch's U.S. Civil War game. That's another one I want to get to the table sooner than later. :)
@@ZillaBlitz There was a possible chance you would get mad at my post because all Civil Wargames have a weakness. The ovewhelming superiority of the North. In fact Gilbert Collins (A Yewtewbr) didn't like me mentioning this weakness on his channel. Cheers 'Zilla.!
No worries! It's an interesting set of questions! :)
