I tried T, and WOW it caused some of the worst depression of my life! (I made 2 videos about it back in 2014 and 2017 if you wanna hear about it.) For me, surgical transition was top surgery and hysterectomy. Way back in the day, people used to ask me if I'm transitioning to male, to be a man. Nope, I've transitioned to altersex, to live my best Gendervoid life. I don't tell people much about my transition irl, because I'd have to explain what "altersex" and "Gendervoid" mean, and I don't wanna give Nonbinary 101 & 102 lectures.

    several things to say:
    1. Who considers social transition easy??????? It's like the hardest part. Even for a binary trans woman (me), it basically amounts to having the most humiliating conversation possible over and over again. Just because people (presumably) know what a woman is, doesn't mean that they don't feel empowered to ask insane and inappropriate questions about all sort of private aspects of my life. Ugh.
    2. I dress normally
    3. I am leaving this comment in the hopes that the algorithm will show me MORE content like this

    • @Trash-Garbage-Trash

As someone who is a trans woman who then realized she’s also genderfluid and wants to have all the genders, i just ended up not taking blockers but also taking estrogen. I don’t know the medical risks of this because its not really well researched. Its interesting that I already was doing this as a SWer to not take blockers for work reasons, and then I realized oh, I want to just be whatever.
I default to trans woman (i don’t like to be taken for a cis woman) but I also am transmasculine and a man sometimes (but its really scary to do such, and i say transmasculine because my sex has been changed up already and I’m transitioning further). Above all I’m autigender where autism is more of a gender for me than man or woman. I just want people to project gender onto me with a distribution that mostly centers arround fem but has a second modal on man. I just want to be double binary and also no gender and all genders and whatever gender.

I wanted to say thank you for using trans masc as a term for yourself - I'm an afab flavor genderqueer/trans enby. And while a large component of what I am is trans masc, I find myself also wanting to say trans femme for myself. I've never... had that conversation with anyone, though. I'm just. Relieved? Like, I'm glad to know someone who started on the other end has also wound a path to this strange little place. Makes me feel less alone. I felt very alone (hence being too much of a coward to ever have a convo along the lines of "I'm kind of trans masc and trans femme, as a natural byproduct of my flavor of transness." Omnitrans. Universal transes! Trans Void. Trans Vast! Just. Thank you?
(No really, I've a lot of shame and guilt, like melodramaticly quoting Frankenstein-level boatloads - the way of the coward is strong in me - and reading this eased that so thanks.)

I'm mostly commenting for the algorithm, but here's some words on my non-binary medical transition. I first started t 6.5 years ago and i was on low dose for 5 years before upping to a typical dose. Suddenly cis people who had understood my nonbinary gender were sure that i would either regret being on t or that i must actually by a binary man. Someone who was there when i got a mastectomy, who would explain nonbinary identity and transition to older liberals at her church now was convinced i must be a trans man to be happy on my dose of t. It's Super annoying to then go online and get similar opinions from transmedicalist binary trans people.
Your comments on butchness are interesting- i think one thing a lot of terfs ignore is that a lot of people they see as "lost butches" or "lost lesbians" whatever are super gay for men. There's a stereotype that t makes you gay, but i suspect it has more to do with being attractive to queer men is a very different experience to being attractive to straight men.
    And i dress normal.

Great video essay, very much enjoyed!
For me I'd answer "how many genders are there" with just 1.
I don't believe in having discrete categories in the first place, more of a multidimensional kaleidoscope (had to google how to spell that word).
Having borders between gender categories only serves to create more division between us.
Labels are great, but they should only be used as a descriptive (not prescriptive) present-tense communication tool to help articulate the subjective.
Part of gender liberation is to avoid putting people into boxes that they didn't subscribe to, e.g. man / woman.
Note, I'm saying this as a soft-launching vaguely trans-femme or bigender "coward" that's still stuck in the ejector cannon.

In my native language, there is no he/she, just one pronoun for everyone and when i grew up i didn't actually realise how much society was differentiating between men and women. Yeah, i wish society was actually like that. Recently i've realised that i'm non-binary according to society's gender standards, but i didn't feel a sense of disconnect in my childhood because i basically assumed everyone was non-binary. It sucks to realise how strong society's genders are and to develop gender dysphoria bc of that. It would be nice to have some non-heteronormative friends or rl environments where things could feel normal again.

    • @JonathanJimbo
      @JonathanJimbo 3 месяца назад +3

@@DesimereThat's very interesting, and I wish English was like your native language.
I hardcore relate to the idea of assuming everyone is like me. Growing up, I also never got why there was any separation between boys/girls (and as an diagnosed Autistic I was an outsider to both groups).
I also felt the same way, not just with gender but with sexuality / romanticism too (I now identify as "strongly aroace spectrum").
Never really understood what crushes were. My mind just sort of assumed that crushes were just people who look pretty and I wanted to hang out with.... But I never really understood what the "big deal" was.
Didn't really understand the sexual stuff either, just chalked it up to "boys being silly".
I sort of just assumed that sex was just something people who are already in relationships did like any other hobby. But didn't really occur to me that sexual desire was a motivator for such relationships to form in the first place. Again like I was just like "what's the big deal".

    • @Desimere
      @Desimere 3 месяца назад +2

@@JonathanJimbo for me, i think it was the fact that my mom relied on me for emotional support. So i became the kind of person who is very focused on the other person and their emotions. So in group settings i get exhausted really quickly and that made me an outsider at school, but not at an after-school hobby thing where the class sizes were max 5 people. That was quite manageable and i didn't stand out. I just ended up seeing all people as individuals with their individual vibes, but i never learned to catch group vibes and sentiments.
I have somehow ended up knowing a lot of autistic people, including my boyfriend, and several of them think i'm autistic too. So i do wonder sometimes, but since i'm pretty good at that "mind reading" of neurotypical people based on body language and vibes, then it's a bit sus. I've heard that it's possible for autistic people to be better at that than most neurotypicals, but then how would it even be possible to know for sure, since i already have adhd and that can cause "weirdness" too :D

  • @cutequakrparrot

Okay, I need to point out, because it's an incredibly common misconception: the bigenital/Salmacian surgery options are so, so often wrongly labeled as "non-binary phallo" and the like. It speaks to the ignorance of the largely cis medical community on trans issues generally that it's labeled as "nonbinary" no matter what.
I'm a binary trans man, and getting Salmacian phallo. Which is literally simpler than the "typical" phallo with vaginectomy, UL, etc. btw.
Oh, also you can absolutely get two penises. It's not literally adding two penises ON, but look into no burial type phallo. You'd have the phalloplasty, and the micropenis sized growth that's already there from T...not buried (don't think I can really get too graphic about it).

Re. fish-I'm a taxonomist, so... short version... bony fish (which is, basically, most fish-everything except sharks, rays, lampreys, and hagfish) are more closely related to mammals, amphibians, etc. than they are to the "other fish" (sharks, rays, lampreys, and hagfish). We can create a perfectly explicit definition of "fish", it just isn't a good definition if our goal is representing evolutionary relationships.
There is a straightforward way to get to a good definition of fish, though: bony fish are fish and sharks, rays, lampreys, and hagfish are not fish. People don't like this because it conflicts with their intuition and they don't want to learn something unintuitive. However, we used to think whales & dolphins were fish, then we changed the definition of "fish" to exclude them, and nothing bad happened.
(The argument that whales & dolphins aren't fish is basically the same-whales & dolphins are more closely related to other mammals than they are to fish, so considering them fish isn't a good definition if we're trying to represent evolutionary relationships.)

Also, a comment more related to the actual topic of the video rather than to one of the rabbit holes that makes a brief appearance. At 3:43-"non-binary people aren't men or women". What about non-binary men? And non-binary women? People-mostly trans people-do use these as self-descriptors. I think I know roughly what they mean (and think "non-binary trans woman" is probably a good description of me), but I haven't sorted this out in my head, yet. Unlike fish, I don't have a good definition of "non-binary" to apply here.
(Making this comment after watching the first 8 minutes or so-for all I know, you tackle this later in the video. I'll find out!)

Ah, yet another classification problem! No, I don't cover that, though you are right, there are people who identify that way. Don't expect people to recognize and remember your super-duper specific so-called gender, because they won't. I also think people do often perceive people's genders even before they come out and transition. Trans women are often subject to violence before they come out for their perceived femininity. Trans men are often excluded from "female spaces" and treated as outsiders before they ever transition (though these get worse during transition). And nonbinary people frequently feel and are treated as gender outsiders even before coming out. People perceive differences. This is a very common experience.

Are there infinite stuffs in the stuff jar too? Can the stuff jar fit infinite stuffs in it? You're not very good at the stuff-guessing game. You're not going to win the stuff jar.

Intersex people exist. They make up 1-2% of the global population. There are SO many ways someone's body can be intersex, from all the different chromosome combinations to hormones not being at the "normal" levels during puberty and adulthood or even just the genitals not being within a certain standard set by doctors, who then will perform unnecessary surgeries to "make" them fit into one box or the other.
There are not two sexes, and that's biological fact.

i assume that according to your definition the determining characteristic between the two classifications is the number of y chromosomes, and most people can't be sure what their sex or gender is because they haven't taken a dna test? So these are Schrödinger's characteristics, existing in a non-binary superposition until tested.
