The Group "A" Mazda 323 GTX Turbo WRC Car | Rally New Zealand

On this #ThrowbackThursday we head to Rally New Zealand and highlights of the mighty Mazda 323 4WD, Group "A", World Rally weapon!
With it's all-wheel-drive system and a turbocharged 1.6 litre engine, the Mazda 323 GTX was a real pocket-rocket, introduced just at the right time. As the fall of Group "B" beckoned a new era for Group "A" competition, Mazda had a head start in their class when other larger manufacturers with bigger financial backing, like Lancia, had to catch up and build completely new cars.

I owned the trailer that Rod Millen carried his 323 AWD around the US with while driving for Mazda...I found it on Facebook Marketplace in the back lot of my former employer's place, and after getting it home I realized it had Mazda RX7 hydraulic disc brakes and Millen's Panasport wheels that were spares from the rally car used on the trailer...did some digging around on the internet and found photos of it from the 80's, contacted Rod and his son Rhys and wound up delivering it to his son in Long Beach, CA so that it could be restored and put back into use for a vintage rally car project he's working on...

I think Mazda was one of, if not the first manufacturers to come up with a really competitive car when Group A replaced Group B.

Underrated and unknown rally cars really fascinates me considering how Mazda wasn't much big in rallyng to alikes of Toyota, Mitsubishi and Subaru on that time. idk but the 323 GTX/GTR are really cool.

Was this from the 1.6 dohc engine but seriously modified for wrc

Standard internals are good for around 300bhp. The turbo on the other hand is only good for around 15psi, which with a few other minor mods would probably be around 200bhp. And of course, a similar story to the standard gearbox, that wont take kindly to going over the 200bhp mark either.
