    Fun tutorials, thanks! A couple of things - the reason the original pattern called for a plastic hook is because(imho) the rougher twines, jute, etc., can rub off the finish on the metal hooks. I made a jute purse using a metal hook and it rubbed the middle of the hooks finish off. Now I use it for crocheting wire(yes wire). Many fun things can be made with wire, especially since the damage was already done to the hook. It’s just visual, it doesn’t affect the actual stitching. In order to help stiffen up the finished baskets you can use a starch , Stiff Stuff(fabric stiffener aka Stiffy), Mod Podge, or even a mixture of school glue & water. Place the basket over a form about the same size(garbage can, planter, paint can, etc, just cover with plastic, then brush it on and allow to air dry. You can do multiple coatings depending on how thick the material and how stiff you want the basket. You can opt to coat the inside as well. Any treatment will change the hand of the fabric a little(like adding sizing to fabric), but it will also help it to be water resistant, not water proof, and easier to wipe clean from dust and animal hairs(I have 3 dogs). Also a tip to help when you’re using multiple yarns. On the top edge of whatever container you are using to hold all the balls of yarn, add binder clips, one for each ball. Place the clips with the metal “arms” facing up, then thread each color through its corresponding clip’s arms. It will keep the strands from wrapping around each other, tying knots, while bouncing around when being pulled. I sure hope that makes sense. Glad your tutorial showed up in my newsfeed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers from FL😺

      You’re very welcome. Always happy to help a fellow hooker😂 we were very fortunate with Ian. Originally it was predicted to head up the gulf coast higher, into the mouth of Tampa Bay. I’m @45 mins north on the gulf coast. Thankfully the path shifted away from our area. The worst damage was a hole in my pool cage. Mostly it inconvenienced the dogs. They hate going outside in the rain. Praying for all those people affected. It truly looks like a war zone.

    I just found you, and I'm oh so pleased, not only with your work, but also with your purpose beyond a project. I am a grief and loss and death and dying specialist. Also, I am a chaplain who works with people who are trying to "make it" in life. How wonderful to find someone who is so caring and concerned. Your down-to-earth manner is soothing in itself. It's like finding a friend who knows the struggles of life...someone who ministers in her own way. Keep teaching, Ginell. Keep caring. A tip- of -the-hat to you. Blessings coming your way.

    As usual I am late the party of baskets!!! However, my first project after not touching a crochet hook for some 25 plus years was a basket. I found it flimsy but now 14 years later, I still have my wip in them. When my mom passed away - the queen of crochet and knitting- she left us with some 25 huge plastic bins filled with yarn!! Half of the bins went to a knitting/crochet group!! I am now down to 3 bins and they are the ones that are thinner type yarn and perfect for making baskets which I made last year. Similar to the second one you made in the video! Hubby loves to bring it to the farmer's market so all the ladies can oooh and ahhh about the basket !!! I guess it wasn't so floppy at all! Having said all that I have to admire that you made the rectangle basket with jute....I used to macrame in the 70's and it killed the skin on my hands. I tried to use it recently but it is too hard on these old hands!!! So kudos to you and just maybe I will find another use for it other than file 13!!! (recycling bin!!) Thanks for a great video!

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  Год назад

      Thank you❤️ The jute one turned out cute, but if I'm honest I probably wouldn't do that one again. First because it has to be slightly looser in order to work with it at all so it ends up floppier than the others and also because the jute I was using has an oily smell to it so anything I put in that basket picked up that smell including those apples. I have always wanted to macrame. My mom used to when I was younger. I love watching videos of it, it's mesmerizing.

    I started crocheting last week, and have knit for 2 years now. 😂 As I watched you struggle to pull the jute through on that special stitch, my hands hurt in sympathy. I wondered if getting a very small crochet hook to pull the loops through would be easier than fingernails. I have one for my knitting that has a knitting needle end on one side and a small crochet hook on the other. Those of us trying to ignore aging, and arthritis in our hands, can use any help we can. My first project is a temperature blanket using a herringbone stitch, which looks great so far. I was considering doing a scrap blanket for my second project, but now I think I’ll do a basket in between them! Thanks for your videos.

      I honestly don't know that I will work with jute again. It's hard to handle and it has an oily residue. I have been working with macrame cord though and have had to get creative on pulling those through and weaving ends. I appreciate the advice. I would love to see your herring bone blanket if you want to share pics on the Facebook group at Ginell's Quarantine Crochet.

    I used two very small balls of yarn from a set of 10 that I found at the dollar store. Thought I'd do the owl along with you. I went off your script and then left it as well. I made a very tiny basket as I stopped after decreasing. I finished it with the crab stitch. I will gift it to a knitting friend. She can fasten her markers to it and then toss the odds and sods of snippets into the basket. I love it. I am debating with my self to do a small chain so it can be attached to the needles or on your work while storing your project or not. A great little thread catcher. I'll have to make some personalized markers to add to the gift. I used purple and teal very soft yarn. Thank you. Now I'll have to go back and do the owl and find a way to stuff it for the great grand kids.

    • @bernicelycklama7619
      @bernicelycklama7619 10 месяцев назад +1

      I did a chain of 6-8 stitches and sc to strengthen it. I'll apply a button or bead so it can be turned over so snippets stay put. You could also attach your needle for burying threads. It is so cute. Thank you I love your style in making your own thing. I am about to celebrate 76. Started crocheting in college as a break from writing papers. Lol.

      I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say so hopefully my reply makes sense. In order to make a basket less floppy and actually stiff, either raise the thickness of the strands or lower the hook size. That's what makes it tight. The thicker the better. So yes, many strands helps the fabric be thicker and stand up better. It's tough on the hands but it really works. ♥️

Down two sizes if you want it to be really snug.

    Hi Ginelle did you end up with more stitches after the marshmallow stitch or maybe I missed a decrease. Thanks jenny

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  2 года назад

      Each marshmallow counts as 2 stitches, one for the bar and one for the puff part. So when you do the single crochet on the next round, remember to put one stitch before it and then maybe one in the chain we used to lock it. It should work out perfectly. If you started with an uneven number of stitches somehow you might have one extra stitch at the end of your marshmallow row. You can just skip it and it will be fine. You probably added it accidentally since you should be working with a multiple of 6 on the base which will always be even. Does that make sense? Did I understand the question correctly?

      The twine is nice but don't use jute like I did. It's very hard to work with and it has a smell and oily residue that goes on to other things. The apples I had in that basket were not edible after a few days. Get yourself some regular twine and you should be good

    I can’t follow a written pattern to save my life! Right now I never know where I start a new row when making a circle

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  5 дней назад

      It's hard to see...which is good because that means your seam won't be visible. I use a stitch marker (which for me is a safety pin, nothing fancy) to mark the first stitch of the row. It's kind of a pain when you are trying to work fast, but eventually you will be able to feel when the row ends, so just use a stitch marker until that happens and it will save you time because you won't be counting rows and second guessing yourself ♥️

      @@GinellCooperwhen I place the market, do I put it on the slip stitch or the 1 chain? Thank you for the quick response! It’s turning out awesome so far, I tried last night from another video and couldn’t do it at all, but you’re so easy to follow and your voice is so soothing! ❤

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  5 дней назад

      Aw thank you so much, I'm glad it's helping you. I would say it doesn't matter where you put it as long as YOU know and it stays consistent. For me, I place it in the both loops at the top of the first stitch of the round. You could do it on the last stitch of the row, you could do it on the post of the stitch so you can easily crochet over it without having to move the marker for a couple of rows. Whatever you like. You are the only one who has to know what it means.

    How do u do the second basket without a magic circle??

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  8 месяцев назад +1

      I do use a magic circle. Are you asking what to do if you don't want to use a magic circle? Are you having a hard time getting it to work? I have many videos showing how to do magic circles that I could point you to if you need more help with it. Another option is to make a chain of 3 or 4 and then connect the last chain to the first with a slip stitch. Then do all of your beginning row stitches around that ring, but it's going to get really tight, especially with 3 strands of yarn. The best part of the MR is you don't pull it tight till those first row stitches are done. It saves your hands and some frustration.

      I actually still have the cups in my pantry but I did a search on Amazon for them and I couldn't find the exact one plus you really don't want or need to buy 300 of them unless you are making a LOT of owl baskets 😁. I would say that it is roughly 12 oz and you can find something similar in the picnic section of any grocery store or dollar tree. You could also use a plant liner.

    • @GinellCooper
      @GinellCooper  Год назад +1

      Which basket are you doing? Is it the base that isn't flat? Usually if it's the base it's because there are too many or too few stitches in the round. Too few will make it bowl and too many will make it ruffle.
