This video is priceless. I stayed with my DSLR Nikons. I have both the D500 and D850 and great glass. The deals on FX glass now is incredible. I did get a Fuji mirrorless and I like it more for its compact size. I am happy wit my images and no one asks me what camera I use. In fact, I still use some venerable vinatge Nikons like the D700 and D200 CCD. I have too much invested to start all over again.
A skilled photographer can take great pictures with either a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. With that said, I switched to mirrorless about four years ago and would never go back. For me the three main advantages of mirrorless are 1) Ability to track AF over the entire frame, 2) Real-time exposure and DOF simulation, 3) live RGB histogram in EVF (Canon specific). Early EVFs were not very good, but the EVF on the Canon R1 is phenomenal. Other advantages of mirrorless systems are quieter operation even with mechanical shutter because there is no mirror to move, less vibration especially with electronic shutter, silent operation with electronic shutter. What concerns me now is the push to very fast readout speeds in ES (R1) and global shutters (A9 III). In their current implementations, both systems have less low ISO dynamic range than their slower counterparts.
lol you think before Mirrorless everyone was missing shots?

I shoot in Australia and I was probably one of the last people to go mirrors about two years ago and now I don't regret it at all. I didn't like electronic viewfinders and I still don't like electronic viewfinders some of the time. In fact sometimes they can give me a bit of a headache and I spoke with an eye specialist about this so I shoot a lot through the screen when I'm doing my landscapes and I try to avoid looking at the viewfinder when I don't need to but there are so many other advantages. I love the ability to shoot handheld at ridiculously low shadow speeds with my GFX. I can shoot down to half a second and even the 10th of a second with a zoom lens. It's incredible how sharp your images are. I teach photography and often I'm asking students what they can afford and I even find them some nice little mirrorless cameras. I probably have a soft spot for Fujifilm because I do use their cameras but they have some great bargains in the APC secondhand market. The XT3 is a great little mirrorless camera. I do think the A series in Sony is great at A6400, 6500, 6700 ..... And I think Nikon have got some great options now even the previous Z6 the new ZF camera I'm not really familiar with the Canon system but I'm sure there are models in that as well but really there isn't a bad camera these days. It's just finding a camera that you can afford and just get out there even some of the kit lenses are now really good. I mean it's ridiculous now you can buy a medium format camera for 3K now in Australia you could probably get one for about 1800 for a GFX 50 model that's incredible. The only thing I don't like about Sony cameras and yes I've used them a couple of times is I? Don't like the clinical look of their photos they just boring to look at and I know that's a bit of a myth or a what do you call it cliche but it is true. Thank you for your channel. Have a great Christmas and however you celebrate it or don't celebrate it. I agree with you about the lenses. I have invested some great money because I do make good money out of photography into lenses and it just takes your career further.
Thank you so much for taking the time and writing this. This is great. I’m glad it’s working for you and you have the funds and the means to be able to do this. Merry Christmas stay blessed my friend.
This is the best advice I have heard on RUclips this year! I have an R3 and a 5DIV and I bought a like new EF 400 f2.8 version 3 which was on sale with the regular sized hood and the shorter version hood too. It was no where near the price of the current RF version which is currently selling at 13,119 in the UK, so no intention of surrendering the EF version for the RF. The truth is I don't own an RF lens, all EF. I've never had a problem adapting any glass on either body. I use the Canon control ring adapters
If the 5DV was released today; right now it would sell more units than the R5ii and R5 combined on launch. Specs. Slightly smaller and lighter than 5DIV - R5 video specs -R5 sensor -1DXIII autofocus -R5 processors - CF Express type B -SD card UHSii That’s it. That’s all they’d have to do.
If I didn’t shoot wildlife, I would care less if it was mirrorless. Cameras don’t make great images photographers do, that is the first lesson every new photographer needs to learn.
Sadly for all Camera manufacturers it's all about making money!!! The need of the hour and probably for the next decade all manufacturing Companies should concentrate on developing & using futuristic hardware now and concentrating on improving the firmwares on this futuristic hardware platform. Rather than keep on releasing piddly models with piddly incrementals in their firmwares... It's time these companies took a sabbatical for next two years and do what is needed for the next decade or so.....
100 % correct on older glass, sharpest lens I ever owned is when I bought recently a EF 300mm f/2.8 II, can throw 1.4 extenders on it and still get L quality sharpness
I use a Fujifilm X-T1 and I do not need anything else. I use a wide variety of adapted lenses and Fujifilm lenses. Many of my lenses are the old Japanese 35 mm lenses that are relatively inexpensive. I could not be happier. Obviously, I am not making videos, just photos.
I sent back the Canon R5II and picked up the Sony A1 for the same price. The A1 is the more powerful camera and more complete. It's just as powerful for video as it is for photo. The R5II has issues with IBIS when it will not work on RF glass, overheating at 4K 120p and the buffer fills up and you cannot shoot until it clears.
The image quality from the Nikon PF’s or Nikkor 180-600 do not compete with the 600 f/4 or the 800mm but they are significantly lighter, cheaper and generally good. Depending on your personal use case the PF’s may be a good choice but certainly do not compete with the top notch glass. The Z9/8 are really for those doing video or for those that need the newest or have invested in Z glass, otherwise the D850/500 are still great.
I do a lot of manual focusing, so a DSLR are NO option for me, I use Sony A7RIVA and Sony A7RV which are compact and light weigt compared to the old Canon DSLR I had 6 years ago. Mirrorless Cameras are so much more the felling you had with SLR Cameras in the late 1970´s and early 1980´s.
I've owned the RF 50, 24 to 70, and 100 to 300. The only lens I'd say might *might* be "superior" to EF glass was the 100 to 300. That 100 to 300 renders very similarly to the 100 to 400 EF ii so even then is probably a toss-up. Maybe the autofocus in RF glass is 20% faster than EF...meh... so what. The EF glass focuses fast enough to get the shots so anything extra is wasted. The obsession with sharpness that seems so widespread these days and apparent in RF glass design is, in my experience, terrible for any images with people in it. The only benefit I see of RF glass is the weight savings. And also the more Innovative focal lengths like the 24 to 105 2.8. Other than that. I really prefer EF glass and it's all I currently own.
Pro glass is pro glass..optical quality cannot be hidden. Ended up buying a 50-500 Sigma for a song Now I can shoot portraits at 50 yards on a D series Nikon. The optical quality matches my 70-200 2.8 L, primes. Wise words here

Message well received. Lenses last a whole lot longer than cameras. 2025 is shaping up to be a big year for Canon with rumors of the R3ii, R6iii, R1-X, R4 in the camera department and teasers of new RF lenses. It is difficult to keep up because of FOMO (fear of missing out), I have decided to try and build my RF collection instead because cameras aren’t vastly improving like you stated. I was discussing with someone the same topic that image quality has not vastly improved, the pics I get with my R6 are not much different than someone using an R3, just the speed has improved.
