I hope you mention the frustration/return mechanic, where if your buneary is at too high a level without being evolved it learns frustration, but if it evolves early it learns return instead

Yes! Went to the comments to look for this! It may not be communicated visually in design, but in the game mechanic, that ludo-narrative consonance is quite rewarding especially considering that STAB Return was a force to be reckoned with.
@@IHOMilknot exactly, it's not at a high level. Buneary learns frustation at level 13, meanwhile, Lopunny learns return at level 13. So, yeah that is a thing.

Fun fact! The reason buneary has such a low base happiness is that rabbits irl are, well, prey animals. They’re skittish af and run or freeze in the presence of anyone big enough to be a threat (which includes ten year old Japanese children); see also them running from battle as often as not in Legends Arceus
This makes Lopunny being a friendship evo and one of the only critters to learn Return by level up a bit of genius

The friendship evolution is also why I like Swadloon so much. It doesn't learn anything thay defines its personality like 'return' or 'frustration' but it's known as the 'Hermit Pokémon' and the only way for it to evolve to for it to come out of its shell so to speak.

@@timmyreobed5043 Just had an idea, what if the regional Stufful has cuts and filling leaking out because its version of Bewear like to beat them up? Said Bewear could have stuffing on its hands only from beating up its pre evolution. Or a quarter of its face can be missing with stuffing leaking out and taking place of the missing segment. The damage could be explained by being preyed upon as a Stufful or from infighting. The Stufful eventually evolve from the experience they gained after losing enough lopsided battles and they continue the cycle. It's too dark for Pokémon, I know, but I think there's a good idea in there somewhere.

the cream colored fur parts are also supposed to resemble clouds of dust, as in “dust bunny” 😊
I wish Game Freak had doubled down on the "dust bunny" idea instead of trying to squeeze in something about ear punchies.

It wouldn't have even been too hard, either. Like, add an entry about how it uses its feet and ears to drum up the ground and spray dust everywhere, and have it learn sand-attack early on
I feel like Bunny that uses it's ears to punch was pulled off much better later by Bunnelby and Diggersby
Those really feel like the masc counterpart to the very fem buns. And they got trashed by the community for being ugly as a consequence...
The fact Bunnelby/ Diggersby came out the very next generation after Buneary makes me think that somewhere between the release of D/P and B/W whoever was responsible for Buneary decided they weren't quite satisfied with the result/ the fan response and wanted a retry at executing the concept.

Fun fact: buneary is one of if not the only Pokemon that evolves via friendship that starts off with 0 friendship points making it arguably the hardest friendship evolution in the game.
The tsundere Pokémon.
It's the only Pokémon that starts at 0 friendship that is not a legendary. So, yeah, when you catch it, it hates you with the fury of an imprisoned god.
I think it makes sense that one wouldn't think of the hidden raw power of Buneary, most people would be fooled by its cute appearance and pick it up, only for the coiled ear to unwind to deliver a powerful smack in the nose so it can get away while leaving you dazed
The fighting aspect of lopunny and its mega evolution makes a lot more sense now
While it may not be super innovative Buneary is at least a Pokémon that didn't get all the personality squeezed out of it in the jump to 3D, the little swaying and ear twitch it does are adorable
You guys overestimate how much personality most Pokemon sprites have
I disagree, the ear coiling was conveyed much better in 2D. Heck, in Gen 4, it’s intro animation is literally it coiling and uncoiling its ears

@@Gloomdrake I assume they give every Pokemon a more neutral stance because it's more realistic and doesn't lock every Pokemon into one or two personality traits. There's a few like Porygon2 that still show off some sort of theme to their idle animations.

My first shiny ever in a pokemon mainline game and was a playthrough pokemon.
I named her Miruku which means milk in Japanese. and her shiny is pink, which means “strawberry milk”. Recently at that time, my bunny died. He was my childhood buddy I had since elementary school. After 2 days after his death, I got her. I sometimes believe that my bunny gave me a shiny bunny pokemon on purpose to help me with those tough times losing him.
She’s in my pokemon home app now!
She will be my favorite pokemon of all time because of that time :)
If I die. I hope she doesn’t get lost forever time passes by. I’ll miss my dead bunny and my shiny lopunny 🐇💕

Lopunny is the tsundere of Pokémon. They start off with the lowest possible friendship value and then only evolve once it's maxed out. Which is very thematic of how domesticated rabbits are as most will take YEARS for them to get used to humans and being cared for.
By the way, because we're mentioning it, LOPUNNY IS A HIGH FRIENDSHIP EVOLUTION. Yes sir, they knew EXACTLY what they were doing with Lopunny.
Also, I did some search out of curiosity, and I learned that Bunneary's rolled ear is meant to ressemble a fashionable hat worn by women and looking at it, it DOES look like a fashionista hat. So I suppose the theme of this evo line is… fashion and beauty, I suppose? Well, that'd be ok if the second evo didn't take it TOO far.

As an Asexual girl who actually likes Lopunny because Mega Lopunny was just really fun to use in battle... Yeah, I'll also grab a spray bottle... Or a firehose.
I've also recently come around on Lopunny after using one in Legends Arceus. They're deceptively good! And I do like the idea of the 3ft fluffball that is Lopunny being a setup-sweeping menace.

While playing Pearl, I never fully understood Lopunny's sprite because the hands covering its chest made it seem like the whole thing was a bunny head stacked on a torsoless giant pair of legs. Suffice to say, it took me a while to understand why this pokémon was so infamous on the internet.
I have a core memory of being at my friend’s house and he caught his first shiny in the wild and it was a Buneary.

I think that the reason why it looks so adorable, is because it is meant to.
Looking at it shouldn't bring you the thought "oh, it could hurt me", think of it as a disguise. Cute exterior while harsh interior, which is a nice dynamic over just obvious signs.
The gimmic isnt the cuteness its the friends we made along the way

Bunneary is a pokemon that deserves a new Model new aninations. I think it would be cool if the "spring-loaded" ear looked actually coiled, and it actively used it in its animations. For example: a attack animation where it flips and uses its spring ear to launch itself into a kick. It would play into its evolution while giving it more personality.
You're going to need a lot more than a spray bottle if you want to stop them... Trust me...
Not only that, it is the most diffucult pokemon to evolve by friendship, because it is the only one which base friendship is 0, all the other pokemon have some base friendship except Bunneary

The coil is moreso depicted on the rearside of the ear -- I recall in my Pokémon figures I had as a child, Buneary's ear had this.

I think my biggest issue with Buneary is that In my brain I always thought it made more sense to be Bun-airy considering its fluffy design always made me think of clouds.
In my opinion, it would have been a more interesting visual and theme to go with a flying bunny. Like in its first evolution, it jumps really high and "gets air" then in its second evolution it uses its big ears like helicopter blades to fly or something.
Dawn's in the anime made me really like it, but without the tough guy attitude it doesn't really look like much

Buneary and Lopunny are my two favorite normal types (shut up) and I will NOT take this disrespectful.
When i was little, there was a special Kraft mac n cheesenwirh Pokemon DP shapes. On the back were pictures of different Pokemon, and my mom used to make up silly names for them. The only one I remember was the name she gave Buneary- "Popcorn Pants".

I think you’re point is fair but that’s the reason buneary is designed this way. If you pull up on buneary you wouldn’t think too much about it because it’s friendly and cute. However, when it gets active, it shows off it’s ability.
