I just realized that was Dave Mustaine talking in the beginning.
Yeah, I remember an old Megadeth documentary where they said that Dave did all the talking on stage, and James was pretty shy at the time. Someone (I forget who) said something along the lines of "if Dave was still in the band, James probably wouldn't have had room to grow into the onstage monster that he became".
plymouthdodgewrecks "Pretty shy at the time" = fronting a thrash metal band. I wish I was that shy!
Dave Mustaine was,is, and Will be the leader on stage
I can't recall how many times Dave Mustaine has called me a fuckhead
@@plymouthdodgewrecks james himself said he was shy. I think in the guitar center interview.
This may be the greatest moment in metal history...Cliff on bass...Dave on lead...these kids had no idea what they were in store for when they showed up for this concert....
I'm with you on that!! I'm just watching this thinking wow Cliff and Dave in the Same band is unfathomable to me. What a Historical moment for sure!!
Same
@@NubsWithGuns you are not hilarious with your inaccurate information... Dave and Cliff played around ten (10)shows together in the band... Four (4) months total that Dave and Cliff were in at the same time !!! So it was a very precious ,brief MOMENT these two musical geniuses played together. Quit getting your information from wikipedia and the internet. I
kids a goat
still blows my mond everytime
"How would you FUCKHEADS like to meet, Cliff Burton?
The MAJOR RAGER, on the FOUR STRING MOTHERFUCKER!!!!"
As quoted by Dave Mustaine, 1983.
Happy Birthday James Hetfield!!!! YOU RULE!!!!! \m/
Cliff Burton KICKED ASS on the bass guitar for sure. ROCK ON!!!!!!
Yes sir he did.
This was filmed on March 19, 1983 during a concert in San Francisco, before Metallica made it big.
It shows a young 19 year old James Hetfield JAMMIN' AWAY and BANGING HIS HEAD!!!!
Today is James' 51st Birthday!!!
So that's the reason I'm mentioning it. \m/
James Hetfield is 53 today!!!!
HELL YEAH!!!!
METALLICA FUCKING RULES!!!! \m/
"Wild Man" Dean Happy Birthday to James \m/ \m/ ROCK ON!!!!!!!
You cant beat cliff he still the best bassist in the world
It's depressing Cliff is dead! This guy is beyond talented!
Max Willson a real genius!! 🤘🤘
For 34 years I have felt the same way. He was VERY UNIQUE musician. He seemed to understand his talent in a way that very few musicians do. He knew more about music than we could in 5 lifetimes. Yea, I searched for years looking for another band thats’ music had the exact vibe, and effect of the music that Metallica made with Cliff. I don’t even like most of the music they have made since he died. Very real, and very rare talent.
Has to be rectified next time around.

Bass solo.
Take 1.
I didn't know you liked Metallica Vegeta ;) lol
Take 1
take 2
still the best version of anesthesia
Yes. But this is my other favorite performance of Anesthesia. You’ve probably heard it, but just in case....dude, you’ve got to give this one a listen: ruclips.net/video/2kdUJ5NAnTc/видео.html
Cliff's final tour has some of his best solo's to date. For example, his final solo is the spangled star. I don't want to advertise the fact, but I have been working on a playlist of Cliff for a while now, which includes these solo's. He truly was a legend.
definetely. I cant find this version in spotify :/
The version at the metro Is better only on my perspective
No, the best version is the met 83
"Four String Motherfucker"
Sounds like a great tattoo to me! :)
Their Cliff Burton days were the best and heaviest \m/
4sure
35 Years and I still only listen to the first 3 albums. Ooops; I mean 36 years. Boy I must be getting old!!! LOL ;)
2:30 2:47 Oh my Freaking God.. as it comes out of my speakers and gets to my ears it takes me a relaxing place that I cant even describe, sometimes I think life is so unfair, a lot of people that dont value life and get to die old and this guy was sadly taken away so soon. I love you Cliff, I did not see you playing live but I will know who you were and I will tell my sons who you were and how big you were for all of Metal heads.
that's acid, my friend... :) cliff played psychedelic jimi hendrix' style music back in highschool
Sometimes, only the good die young
Hell YEAH!!!
That part is awesome!!
I literally come back to this performance all the time just to listen to that part. It’s absolutely incredible, cliff is the greatest bass player ever and the fact he achieved that in 3 years shows the fucking musician he was. Literally I tear up listening to that time stamp you posted cause it’s that emotional in itself. Definitely comes from a higher place
@5:20 so metal it melted the vhs
genius or not, cliff sure had a whole lot of fun while playing and that is beautiful
He was the jimi Hendrix of the bass
God bless Cliff Burton.
This was part of the reason why i bought a Rickenbacker.
Money not well spend.
Im sorry but seriously they are not cheap! You could even buy a Aria Pro-2 (which Cliff also used) for the price of a Ricky.
Im sorry but just the truth

@@perkele8341 I saw this dude who was selling a fake one he made custom for 500
make no mistake about it.when we all first heard cliff,we were fucking blown away!
his life being cut short broke my heart and everyone elses.GOD bless you brother musician.
James and Lars told that when they went to see Cliff and the Troubador for the first time they thought at first there was another lead guitarist then realized he was playing bass and decided right then and there he was the one they were looking for in a bassist.
Fuck man Cliff was soo much more that just a bass player.
He understood that you dont need to play at a million miles an hour to be heavy.
His solos aren't usually about speed but of the melody he makes.
You can really hear his brilliance on Orion.
Fuck man, I cant express what a lost of talent his early death was.
Cliff turned into a beast as soon you gave him a bass.
Cliff is still the only bassist I know of who could make the bass scream like this
What about Robert Trujillo he plays in a similar way to what cliff did
@@jamesgreener1407 Rob sounds way different though
yeah his efects sound way different there is something missing in the times hes done anesthesia as well as when he plays bells it really feels dead. i love metallica and every thing they do. but to me rob while a great player and great technique he doesnt really fit in the band energetically if that makes sense. jason was a perfect replacement for cliff cause he put everything he he had in the live shows. but i just dont feel like rob does he seems way too reserved for metallica. cliff was the best out of them all never be another one like cliff
@@jamesgreener1407
are you fucking kidding me this needs more fucking views
Shroom Head , time grows, I may be a couple of years behind, but the music NEVER dies!!!
That baseline that starts at 2:30 and ends at 2:48 is fucking BOSSSSS. I wish it was on the album!!!!
sorry im late but i found tabs for it
2:37 I just realized he wraps his thumb over the top of the neck to mute the E string, cause he plays an A power cord( open A, and 14th fret on both D and G strings)
This was the very first Metallica song I heard way back in early 85. I bought the Whiplash EP, with Whiplash and Jump in the Fire on side one, and Seek and Destroy and Phantom Lord on side two. I couldn't decide whether it was metal or hard core punk. And then it hit me, that it's neither. It's freakin METALLICA!!!
2:30 best moment in music history. RIP CLIFF
Gone, but never forgotten...
+Josh Rowe so true
I would have loved to hear more bass solos, imagine if Cliff made this much of an impact since his death, imagine what he could've done if he lived...possibilities are endless
Best bass solo ever.
This is for me the best performance! At 2:30 he completely goes into God mode! What a fucking good part! I love all of him, all My live. I will tell my kids what a God cliff is!
yeah that part is absolutely insane
@@johnfinsky5420plus the fact he headbangs during the whole thing without missing a single lick is what gets me
Even then their live shows were so tight it's like putting on the album
Old School String Metal. Feast your eyes on this \m/
5:19 Dave and James banging heads in unison causes a shockwave through space and time.
it is a shame he is gone but at least we got to enjoy him while he was here, nobody lives forever
Yeah.. easy for you to say ahahahah I wish I was born then :(
L00d4cHa
thing is I had never heard of Metallica till And Justice came out, and that was after he had died.
Musicians live forever in their music
Cliff should be 21 years old in this video What a great genius… and what a terrible loss. I would give anything to see him on stage. Thank you Cliff for all you’ve done. You’ve made my life more beareable. I will always keep you in my heart.
So much musicality... Cliff was amazing in term of bass soundings. He was clearly beyond any other bass players at that time. I mean maybe Les claypool but in 83 man it was totally not common!
this is the my favorite metallica lineup which i call the "drunk tank"
I miss the eighties man some really classic metal was jumping off in 83 and I was 13 and it grabbed me!!
Brings back some great memories of growing up as a teen in the 80's. Ride the Lightning is when I discovered Metallica. Then came Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Megadeth etc.
mamma mia...cliff era, e rimane insostituibile, i suoi assoli di basso sono bellissimi
I was born to late to see Cliff Burton (1998) :'(
(crying) I want to go back to the 80's
Such an amazing talent taken away too soon. Love you, Cliff. We'll see you down the road, brother.
Badass best bassist have ever lived.
This is now my favorite bass solo to ever grace the universe.
the best bass solo of all time especially 2:30 - 2:50 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man cliff's performance just so bad ass
Ultimate power group of dead rockets would be Randy Rhoads and Dimebag on twin lead guitar, Cliff on bass, Nick Menza on drums and Dio on vocals!
shit. did not know about Menza pass away :(
RIP....
gborat he was amazing
When did Nick Menza pass away?
lynchie137 May 21st this year :(
Crimson Yoshi What happened? Was he sick?
Thanks for the post. I forgot I had this VHS.
3:25 gotta love that
Cliff and Dave in the Same band is just unfathomable to me !! I was 12 in 1983 listening to Iron Maiden though... didn't get into metallica until justice, dangit
Imagine where would their music would of gone if this lineup remained the same!!!!
Cliff - best metal bass ever.
Mustaine - the god of riffs and orgasmic solos (megadeth has more solos in one song than metallica in a whole album)
James - amazing voice and legendary lyrics.
Lars - well he's Danish.
Idk... These guys might make it big one day,..
;)
I love how much energy is around James as he’s basically static while on stage. On stage left, Cliff is basically always rocking out and practically immune to whiplash and on stage right, Dave is just like, “Try to do this, James.” I think I once read that it was kind of a good thing Dave left because it made James’s stage presence grater and he became more energetic.
(Not to be pedantic, but you have your stage directions reversed; stage direction is according to the performers' perspectives, not the audience's. Therefore, Cliff is on stage right and Dave is stage left.)
listen at his voice here he would have been good in an early death metal band too tho metallica predates death metal by a few years i think
I here this again with my teenage son and yes it still blew my mind and my son . We will never see a bass player like Cliff again .
CLIFF IS JUST GENIUS!
Happy birthday Cliff. THE FEEEEEEEEEEEEEELS.
2:33 omg
Such an amazing talent that was taken too soon. Love you Cliff. We'll see you down the road, brother.
Was thinking about Cliff these days....still miss him, even after 27 years!!Never forget about you,Cliff!!
Fuck Yeah! Dave Mustaine!! Better recognize!
Fun fact: Cliff wrote _Anaesthesia_ when he was only 14.
Only a small part
90% was improvised on the spot
Fake, he didn’t write anesthesia really. It’s just a compilation of licks
Clif and Dave on the same stage, tears went tru my eyes !!
Cliff is the major Rager and will live for ever in the hearts of each and every metallica fan
this solo is awesome
cliff has a killer groovy take on his metal bass playing and i love it. he could have played in p-funk, but am glad to have heard him in his day. peace love and cliff em all...........
RIP Mr. Burton. What an inspiration for Bass players everywhere.....You ain't gotta hide guys!
The quintessential metal song.
Wow, Lars sounds killer on this one. Them Double Kicks! :))
Awesome job by Cliff. Especially after the drums kicked in... that was awesome.
The line up I wish I could have seen live. Love the way Mustaine pounds on his guitar!
Never ... Never stopped headbanging. Never.
how could cliff play that insane on bass.... and bang the shit out of his head at the same time
2:25-2:47 is the best part of the solo
The Undisputed KING 👑 of the Bass!😎
CALMS THE MIND....SOLACE FOR THE SOUL....FOREVER GRATEFUL ❤ CLIFF BURTON...🎼👌🎼
Absolute monster.
Best rock bassist still today.

@@kelp3841 metal is rock
That first minute.. Fucking metal from the soul
WHAT A GREAT MUSICIAN.............
the guy played the bass like a guitar. Love em or hate em, theres no denying these guys debut was a monster.
This is the best version of ATP capture live....the other late '83 version is better video but not performance. This is the epitome of epic Cliff solo! He was on point and killed it, the other was a but more off the cuff but still great of course.
0:56 a little To Live is To Die In there.
This is one of the rawest shows I've ever seen. Even James's voice has got brutal and natural distortion!!
This is it. By far the best bass solo ive ever seen.
3 years of discovering metal and its still the best
True as hell
29 years ago TODAY he passed...
...
Sakanuian Today, it's 30 years.
Indeed
Yesterday cliff pasted away 32 years ago
Fantastic...
Dave is one of the most genius lyric writers in existence, and most of it came from departure from Metallica, so I guess we should be thankful. We got 2 amazing bands out of one.
Happy Cliff Burton day!
Cliff was a bad ass player....
AH.... LOOK there is Dave.. Wow this is rare
2:32-2:48 damn, thats so fuckin awesome
Carlos P That part always grabbed me from the first time I heard it when this was released. I always wished he'd followed that line and feel a lot longer in this solo... BUT... the fact that IT IS such a fleeting moment adds to it's greatness.
this is pure diamond bro!
i love dave's intro to cliff.
Que chimba de banda. la mejor banda del mundo en ese entonces ....
Thank you for putting this out there! I love Metallica (at least how they were in their peak and before the 21st century, preferably 85) because James had his voice, Kirk was a great guitarist (still is) and cliff was alive! I love megadeth to, although I don't think their as talented as metallica was (surely are now!) And it is argueable about who's a better guitarist, their's or tallica's, but there ALL amazing. After Dave was kicked, he turned into sorrow. He made Megadeth. And thank god.
Cliff was fucking awesome! A masterpiece!
some epic footage right here.
La Gran formacion de Metallica de todos los Tiempos! James,Dave,Cliff y Lars ♥! Amo este video
cliff burton the best basssist in the world
This is gold for my eyes!!!
My favorite part 1:31 to 1:36
My favorite part is 0:00 - 8:29
I was going to say the same and that's the only part I kinda know how to play on bass ( from the live version )
Cliff was ABSOLUTELY. MAGIC on his bass. CERTAINLY ONE OF A KIND. RIP BROTHER.
Cliff, so cool!!
This is definitely Cliff's best rendition of Anesthesia. Its so good especially after Lars kicks in.
Intro by Dave Mustaine!!!!!
+irmasil3 what do you mean? :)
+Toxeensynth he means the intro of whiplash.
+mike gr lol! I actually mean the introductory speech. Dave was "renowned" back in the day for his speeches and for introducing members of the band as James was too shy to do it (quoted by himself). Kerry King, a strong young Metallica fan by the time has always expressed how he went to the shows to actually see Dave playing guitar and giving his stage show, ripping leads etc. And although as years went by there was tense between them, he stills remembers those early Dave stage acts up to now.
+irmasil3 oh ok case solved! :) i really like the guitar playing of dave, but because of his attitude he got out of the band. i know it was good for the band, but with this move i think that metallica lost some of their magic!
+mike gr I can not tell how Metallica would end with Muscatine in the band (probably dead though...lol) but I am happy to have some of the best guitar riffs and lyrics around for the last 30 or so years...i.e. Megadeth songs of course!
Simplemente épico.
