STRAIGHT TALKING about how it really is in the forests. NSW south coast locals have been going out spotlighting to document Greater Glider habitat in Flat Rock State Forest (below Pidgeon House Mountain). Logging in this compartment mainly for export woodchips has been stalled by the NSW Environmental Protection Agency Stop Work Order since November 2023. The EPA has now marked out 100 metre circles of protection from logging around five Greater Glider den trees identified by citizen scientists, right in front of logging machinery. Locals can't access all the public native forest to protect endangered species so forestry needs to confine operations to profit making plantations established on cleared land - our pine plantations already provide over 90% of timber work and over 80% of construction wood. Our native forests are worth more standing for biodiversity and carbon storage. We can't wait to read David's new The Forest Wars book : )
