David Cross Interviews Maynard James Keenan | TOOL, Puscifer, Mr. Show, Bidets, Scientology & More
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 мар 2022
- In 1995, a band called Puscifer, featuring TOOL singer Maynard James Keenan, appeared on the debut episode of 'Mr. Show,' the beloved HBO sketch comedy series starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Over 25 years later, Puscifer are going strong, about to kick off the theatrical art-rock troupe's first tour in six years (tix: bit.ly/3syVSvk). Cross, too, keeps on chugging: He recently released a new comedy special, 'I'm From the Future' (watch: bit.ly/3IASo0Y). Naturally, REVOLVER had to reunite the two, so we enlisted Cross to interview Keenan - and the results are just as weird, insightful and hilarious as we hoped.
Watch above and let us know what you think in the comments.

Maynard was sick with the flu when I saw them in Houston. He kept stepping off stage to get sick into a make shift bucket and go back on stage. The man actually apologized to the crowd for having the flu! Blew my mind at his commitment to his performance. The crowd roared with appreciation and they proceeded to kill it as usual. He's a rare breed and amazing person.
That’s pretty great
@E.J man, I saw that happen as well, THREE concerts in a row.. Maynard did exactly the same thing twice, but the 2nd time, he grabbed his speaker during the long solo of "Descending" and microphone and carried it all the way to the other far left platform by dragging it down the stairs then up again with it, plugged it in just in time for the next segment started. I knew something wasn't right. The 1st and 3rd concerts they didn't play "7empest" either. They played, instead, an extended version of "Part Of Me" and he actually just went to the front of stage and screamed like he hasn't in 10 years. Then Stinkfist, and show over. Seriously, good on him for making such an effort. And yes, you're right. He is a rare breed and amazing person. Highly intelligent. If he quits music, he should run for president. No joke. But give him a 10 year break. You know he's never actually been an official member of Tool, don't you? Hence all these legal battles? He does what I do - which is being a session musician for hire.
Work ethic.
@@Parrish_Muhoberac omg I had no clue! What's up with the legal stuff?
Damn, he had the flu here in Berlin a few weeks back as well when I saw him. He must be getting sick a lot with the traveling.
Saw Tool in Pittsburgh last night. Incredible show. Loved Maynard’s comment after the first song - all the bs craziness occurring in the world, consuming our collective mentalities will be there after the show - but for the next 2 hours, immerse yourselves in the magic of Tool live. And we did!
The tool concert experience is unlike any other show. It's so fucking good

I love when Maynard gets interviewed by someone he knows well. You can tell he is more comfortable and himself
Imagine that: someone being more comfortable talking to someone they know
@@quallude1 well said Joshua well said 👏🏻
@@quallude1 I refuse to imagine exactly that, Joshua.
That interviewer guy is an actor. Only I don't remember where I've seen him. I know its a comedic thing tho. I'm at the point where they're talking about poo. Fascinating. Just had a convo w/ my brat about this recently. Maybe the older you get the more u poo. Or maybe that's our genetics or maybe not, idk. & on that note, im out. Although I'm sure Maynard has a fascinating head w/ dark turns here & there. Maybe sometimes even soothing. But maybe he doesn't always want to go there either, the darkness. If he really is ex military I guess that explains y he explores so much of ugly side of humanity
I can definitely agree to that
For those that don't know, they've known each other for almost as long as Tool has been a band. Maynard (and Adam/Ronnie Dobbs skit only) were on Mr. Show in a couple skits (Ronnie Dobbs, Coupon:The Movie, end credits) and were a fake band called "Puscifer" on the show before they (Puscifer) were actually a real band. And MJK was also in the Ronnie Dobbs movie "Run Ronnie Run."
So if they seem sarcastic with each other it's because they are old friends razzing each other and generally have the same type of humor. FYI
I fuckin loooove Ronnie Dobbs. Run Ronnie Run is a classic
As well, you probably remember that David Cross and David Yow (the Jesus Lizard), each did some humourous commentary for the Vicarious video! If memory serves me correct, i believe there's also an option to listen to both Davids commentaries, @the same time! 😂 That's some wacky, funny sh*t, imo!
@one point, I think David Yow says something like "Hey Maynard, get me a tequila & Gatorade!" 🥴🤢 😂
I think David Cross gives the creature (in the video) the name "Nervous Geoff"..& it just goes on from there..🤣🤣
Good stuff!
By all means, please correct me if I'm wrong..I'd rather have my facts straight lol. It's been a long time since I've seen it.

Maynard is such a wise and humble human...always love listening to him speak...
Very much the opposite of what mass of ppl think
I’ve gone back and forth with how I feel about Maynard over the years having watched a bunch of his interviews spanning these three or so decades.
At first I loved his communication style. Then I started thinking he’s a real cynical dickhead who’s aggressively standoffish with people. At this point, I think it’s a bit of both; that he has a really dry sense of humor, says some insightful stuff, but can be a dick and come off as self-important.
@@crescendo5594 He's earned the right to be self-important a trillion times over.
@@crescendo5594 I feel like most writers have to be a little self important and pretentious to believe their words are good, and important enough to be heard by millions of people, let alone want them to be. All artists are to a point, he might just be a little bit more then others. I agree it’s definitely a bit of both with him, a lot of people don’t know how to approach him, and I think he likes it that way.
He is the most genuine artist that has every lived he is so self aware.
I'm 35 years old and tool has been one of my favorite bands as long as I can remember into my childhood and now at 35 I've for some reason circled back around and tool has become my favorite band all over again! What an amazing group of musicians!

Finally an honest conversation with Maynard, with no pre-written bullshit questions. Well done David.

In all that copious free time they have? I mean, I'd watch/listen, but I think they both have enough on their plates.
Dude that would be so good they have great chemistry and similar humor for sure.
This was great. Love Maynard glad to see he's still going strong and living his best life. That man's music got me through many tough times.
This is one of the best interviews with Maynard we've ever had! The fact that him and David are long time friends made the whole thing just feel like a casual chat more than a formal interview.
It's always such a lovely thing to be able to get to peek behind the curtain on what Maynard does. Fantastic interview! 😅

Just saw TOOL in Buffalo.... beautifully crafted show! Top quality, 👏🏻 great seats on the side of the stage, was sad to leave at the end lol.
It really was!
Hey, same here, absolutely mind blowing

On the side of the stage aren’t great seats. They’re the worst seats in the house for a TOOL show. I’m glad you had fun though. I’ll be in Columbus this Sunday 😃
That is usually how it is!

Saw the second last Tool show on March 11 2020 in Spokane. They played one more show in Portland on the 13th then pulled the plug on the tour. Was a privilege to see them play 7empest.
Lucky fucking ass!! So jealous. I caught both shows in Denver on that first leg and then they came back just about a month ago and still no 7empest. I really want to hear that song live. But I did get to hear Hooker with a penis for the first time live. And I lost track after 13 or 14 tool shows over the last 25 plus years.

I dont need Maynard out front "performing". He can be wherever and wear whatever. All that matters is that his flawless vocals go through you to the soul!
MJK is always a difficult interview, he's been asked it all 10x over. So he tends to want to take the interview in random unconventional directions. Props for David for going with the flow.
Maybe not. Maybe he just gets bored being asked to comform and his mind goes to random thought
I don’t think it has anything to do with him being “asked it 10x over.” Maynard’s been like this since birth lol. I think he just isn’t afraid to being himself. If he finds the conversation boring, he’s not going to pretend it’s riveting.
@@MM80666 I get that and they have worked together. But David was there on behalf of Revolver and needed to hit on key points / questions. Props to him for keeping it on course for most of the interview.
Did you see David on the Late Show a few weeks ago? He knows a thing or two about derailing an interview.
Lol
These two could legitimately have a great podcast...even if it's like twice a year...that even makes it funnier actually lol
I saw tool in 2020 right before the pandemic, and had tickets for front row to see their second show (both in DC) but the second got postponed cause the pandemic. It just happened but I couldn’t make it this time. I did, however, go see them in Tokyo a few years back and let me tell you that was a whole different experience because the show in Japan was way way way more intimate. So much smaller of a crowd and it was AMAZING!

Just today I was really excited when OPIATE² was released, it was really a pleasant surprise, the original is one of my favorite Tool song, and I really dig the new version, definitely gonna listen dozens of times more. A few years ago I heard about Mr. Show, found out that Maynard was in it, but I really cannot find it anywhere, and I checked on IMDb he was in 2 episodes it says there.
He's in the Ronnie Dobbs sketch in season 1 (with Adam Jones in a non speaking part). It's pretty funny and it's the origin of the band name Puscifer.
He's also at the end of the Coupon: The Movie episode, during the credits. It's very short and not very funny at all.

Brilliant video, rare to see Maynard this candid in an interview
MJK is a living legend and one of the greatest artists to ever grace this planet. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest male vocalist in rock music history. He continues to push out quality music over and over and over and continues to amaze me. The fact that he’s the lead singer of not one but THREE multi-platinum selling bands, just says it all. But that in person interaction with the people in your area is important, too.
