When I was a teenager in the late 1960s, Bill Basie played piano at jam sessions late night at a club called Small's Paradise in NYC's Harlem that I attended and occasionally sat in on. I was, and still am, a vocalist and I know he made me sound better than I was.
For the intermediates, It's like passing a foreign language speaking exam. The ideas are there, you need right timing, vocabulary, grammar and context.
