    Just an FYI, I have a BUNCH of trees from Chris at Travelling Gardeners. Amazing guy, and fantastic trees. I'm planning to take a ride to his place to pickup a few more.

    Great video, my friend. I really enjoyed it. I hope to try my Cessac soon it's about 2yrs old. And I did score an Ondata this year, you got me excited about it now after your reaction 😄. Keep filming 👍

      Ya I’m excited to own both varieties. Everyone will be talking about Ondata still in a couple years… my friend said be patient with the Cessac, it took his 4 years to taste this good.

      @@basementfigs lol nice. Btw I just saw a video by figczar with (Carlos from NJ) where they compared smith to cessac too but his leaves are so different from what I’ve seen from MJFigs and others.

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  2 месяца назад

      @@firstname7769 I fast forward thru it. MJ is adamant that his cessac was just ok until now. The age gap was too big on their video. We did 5yr tree vs 4yr tree. Also taste is subjective and picking the figs at the right time. I didn’t notice the leaves though.

  • @thenotoriousfig

    I've had figs off a 30' fig tree in California. Among the figs, there were 3 distinct flavors, meaning fig to fig, they can taste different--even from the same tree. If space is a concern, and a hobbyist already has Smith, Cessac is unnecessary IMHO.

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  3 месяца назад

      You can make that argument on lots of varieties. But if you’re just starting out in the hobby, and had limited space, you can skip the Smith and just get a Cessac IMO.

    • @thenotoriousfig
      @thenotoriousfig 3 месяца назад +1

      @@basementfigs yeah, since Smith can take a few years to start setting and holding the fruit. I remember buying Cessac for $90 a cutting a few years ago.

    • @MJFIGS
      @MJFIGS 3 месяца назад +2

      Agree you will have 3 distinct taste on a tree. Under ripe, ripe and overripe. 4th bonus one is spoiled.
      Smith is a great fig but not better in taste than a ripe Cessac from a mature tree, you cant compare to the taste of a younger tree.

    • @thenotoriousfig
      @thenotoriousfig 3 месяца назад +1

      @@MJFIGS there's one more version of ripe, which is "perfectly ripe" lol

  • @lcglazer

    is it necessary to remove figs from a branch you are air layering?

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  3 месяца назад +1

      Tough question…. I don’t wait til I have a massive root ball when I air layer… half the bag filled with roots is enough for me…. So I’ll remove the figs… if you have a full bag of roots, you can keep the figs if you want. I also remove figs cause I wanna grow the tallest single trunk I can before winterizing them.

    • @basementfigs
      @basementfigs  3 месяца назад

      I get what you saying. I’ve tasted enough smith to know that was a good smith. The cessac was that much of a difference. Enough for me to buy a plant.
