I remember watching that game live as a kid and being absolutely transfixed. It was hard to even begin to describe how exciting that game was. Couldn't have been two more different styles, degrees of athleticism, etc. Georgetown DID get many calls in the second half, almost like the 2002 NBA Western Conference finals. Alonzo finally took control of the game down the stretch but without him, Princeton would've prevailed. They may have even gone further. Their offense was so different it would've been tough for anyone back then to contend with.
Fantastic game plan by Princeton. John Thompson commented in the post game interview something to the effect that the better team that night did not win. Very classy of Thompson. Kudos to Carrill, but Carrill's comments about the second half's first 8 calls being fishy doesn't hold water. All legit calls. Had they not been called it would have of course played to his advantage being undersized and outmatched athletically. Just being the underdog doesn't mean you're going to get every call. Lead Ref Paparo never played favorites. All felt his overzealous tendencies equally. Though Princeton lost this game, I thing they beat Georgetown in a different way. The Hoyas remained flat against ND, NC State, and then eventually lost to Laettner's Duke squad. It was like avenging their previous loss to Syracuse in the BE Tourney was the bigger victory. I'm a lifetime Hoya fan and I felt like that team peaked too early that year. Too bad for 'Zo and the rest not ever reaching the Final Four.
Georgetown should have run over Princeton with just talent. But it's hard to get up for Princeton after blowing through the Big East tournament. The greatest upset that almost was.
And NOT to just play a 'tough' John Thompson comment here. But YES, I do feel that Virginia did a thing very much up "John Thompson's" alley. Do this: then let's just win the TITLE next year . . . and VA did!
Loved John Thompson's approach to basketball. Deep bench. He had Sophomore and Junior players with more experience than most teams Seniors, and they were all ready to play.
I went to HS and grew up playing sports with Kit Mueller. He was not only also good at football - He may have been one of the nicest star athletes you could ever meet. Just a great dude all around. He became a hedge fund manager afterwards but despite the likely high income, I can guarantee he still the same down to earth guy he was in 1986 through 1989
This is what makes the NCAA tournament so special that the smaller school's can beat the big school's it's David and Goalith at it's finest and it's why every March we watch! Thanks Princeton!
This game and other games which pit high seeds vs low seeds make the saying "there's a reason why they keep score" so true. You gotta love sports; the ultimate reality show at its finest
That would be the closest to the mega upset until Virgina who was a 1 seed got upset by UMBC in Round 1. Virginia would win the title the next year. The upset was in 2018.
How many people know that John Thompson sent his kid to Princeton to play basketball for Carill.? That is John Thompson III we see in this video. Eventually, the son coached Princeton basketball for a couple of years. 😂
#16 Seed blows out overall #1 seed Virginia 74-54. The first time it has happened but it won't be the last. March Madness is the perfect name. I sure missed it this year.
Everyone thought it would be the return the Ewing days when Alonzo Mourning was recruited by Georgetown. That didn't end up happening and this game was probably when it started to unravel.
I feel like the title implied that the tournament was in trouble or something. Considering a 6-seed won the title the year before, I'd say there was still plenty of madness before this Princeton-Georgetown game.
Taylor Holmstrom Prior to 1989, the seeds weren't thought out very well. Princeton would've been an 8-seed today. The Selection Committee readjusted the process after this game to include mid majors.
In 1989, two 16's almost beat their 1-seed opponents. Not only did Georgetown survive Princeton, but Oklahoma had to rally from down 17 to beat East Tennessee State. As a Kansas fan, it would have nice if Billy Tubbs had been the first coach to lose to a 16 as a 1.
Loving this one thanks for sharing very information blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
I swear I knew Princeton would be a tough game and thought they were underseeded. When the pairing was announced I knew it.The reason was that they had defeated a good Seton Hall team the year before and played them tough that year. That registered with me. No other reason. So I got one prediction right.
Everyone loves a Cinderella win, but in fairness to Georgetown, it’s tough to be cast as a national villain when you’re just trying to get a win, the same as your opponent. Kentucky felt that unfair sting in the 1978 title game, when its veteran team pressured by its great legacy played a very young bubbly Duke team. Kentucky was not allowed to feel pleased to have won, and neither were the Hoyas in this game.
I'll tell you another game that saved March Madness: March 21, 2010. Northern Iowa over Kansas From 2007-2009, every 1 seed made the Elite Eight, and with the exception of Davidson in '08, they faced either a 2 or 3 seed. Very few large upsets took place after the occasional 12 or 13 in the first round. The tournament was getting predictable. Then this happened. A top-ranked Kansas team that had only lost two games all year didn't even make it to the Sweet 16, sparking a tournament where nothing was predictable, and we had a ton of upsets, even though a 1 seed did win it all. The next year was even crazier.
BYU was actually a 3 seed that year but they made the Sweet 16. Richmond was in the Sweet 16 as well. Yeah the final was bad (even though I am a UConn fan) but there were so many other great games in the tournament.
nope, JTII had the right to recruit whoever he wanted and he was a legend. There is no refuting that. I just was taken aback at how much this culture has changed in the past 30 years.
I went into Walsh's Tavern with my late Mom just before half of this game. Mom asked the score, I said "Georgetown's up 25-17," only to correct myself a minute later. But for a late turnover, Princeton would have won this game. For all intents and purposes, they did. Princeton +22 was a heck of a bet.
these head coaches are ranked in this EXACT order #1 pat riley #2 john thompson #3 allan bristow and the best individual years go in this EXACT order the #1 hornets #2 indian river high #3 heat and #4 georgetown for star alonzo mourning
One of The Greatest Games in NCAA History. Clean Block at the end, but THAT game put PRINCETON BACK on the map. PRINCETON has a RICH BBall history. Do your research.
Georgetown must have been a great team when you're playing Alonzo Mourning and Patrick Ewing, and have Dikembe Mutombo sitting on the bench... Kudos to Princeton.
back in the days when a black actually could be considered a racist. Sorry not sorry. For the record, I don't think JTII was a racist but it's funny how much the perception has changed.

Who’s here after 16 FDU beat 1 Purdue
Don’t forget about umbc vs Virginia
Georgetown should have run over Princeton with just talent. But it's hard to get up for Princeton after blowing through the Big East tournament. The greatest upset that almost was.
Well the impossible happened thanks to #16 UMBC beating #1 Virginia 74-54

Misleading thumbnail, Patrick Ewing wasn't at Georgetown in 1989 when this game was played.
#16 UMBC WHOOPED #1 UVA ASS
Ryan Mai whipped their asses from start to finish
That would be the closest to the mega upset until Virgina who was a 1 seed got upset by UMBC in Round 1. Virginia would win the title the next year. The upset was in 2018.
saved march madness is stretching they were having a heck of a decade
princeton's backdoor cuts drove me crazy the whole game, and I wasn't playing, being a Georgetown fan will do that to you🤷🏽♂️
Donovan Shannon go tigers
Clean block

Georgetown got insane help from the refs to win
30 years ago already

It’s the click bait industry, not journalists as such.

Well folks it finally happened in 2018 umbc beat Virginia number 16 over number 1
Insane that No. 55 Mutombo is not even on the floor for that final play!

That's true. 2010 in general was a breath of fresh air, and then 2011 was just..insane, we'll probably never see a year like that again.

I see Mutumbo celebrating from the bench at 7:57. Hindsight, maybe he could have been in the game with Mourning.

It's safe to say we know where dre got his beats logo from lol
7:57 dikembe mutombo
Georgetown has had some spectacularly bad first round games in their history
Like Florida Gulf Coast in 2013, which put them in the exclusive club of 2-seeds to lose to 15's.
Why does the screenshot include Patrick Ewing?
RIP coach
@ gp - Senor Padilla, he was a GREAT man who LOVED basketball . . . .
16 seed just beat a 1 seed! Umbc 74 Virginia 54
Everybody knows that Princeton was more of an 8/9 seed than they were a 16. This really did save March Madness as we know it.
Purdue was a 1 seed in 1996 and almost lost to a 16 seed in the first round.
Michigan State needed overtime to beat Murray State in a 1-16 game in 1990.
Oh shit beats by Dre logo
Georgetown must have been a great team when you're playing Alonzo Mourning and Patrick Ewing, and have Dikembe Mutombo sitting on the bench...
Kudos to Princeton.
Ewing and Mourning did not play at the same time Ewing was in the NBA 4 years
My mistake, but Georgetown was still pretty good.
Patrick Ewing was class of 1985. So it is no way he was in this game.
@@stuartperry8141 I corrected myself two years ago, but thanks.
And you UMBC just upset number 1 over seed Virginia.
To all idol rappy tulfo fans see this video
Virginia: The orignal imposters
Princeton, do miracles happen?.......Hell no.
@ kb - Pete Carril had about 10 huge "near misses " while at Princeton . . . .
Princeton was the better team that day.
Saved March Madness? Please.
“Saved March Madness”…🙄
This game didn’t save March madness that’s stilly
The game that saves March Madness was Duke Vs UNLV 1991. That made everyone believe that anyone can be beaten.
mightymacdiesal12 Duke had a very talented team that year. They weren't underdogs in the true sense.
Duke were clear underdogs but they were not Cinderella.
Ewing !!!
Now they'd be a pick em. Oh how Georgetown has fa

Wow good point
near upset maybe john thompson isn't as good as they say he is, he lost the olympics or he throws games
Huh???
Only John Thompson - with two 7 foot centers who would go on to the NBA HOF - could make this a close game. Great recruiter. Terrible coach.
Outside shooting can negate 7 footers in the lane. Smh.
John Thompson knew how good Princeton was. John Thompson had so much respect for Pete Carill that he sent his son to play for Carill.
Clearly a foul.
He waited to long let mourning get close enough for the block.
