  • This video teaches us that the hukilau is more than just a song and dance, it was once the way of life in Hawai'i. Fred Takebayashi demonstrates to a group of school children in Kaneohe at Waikalua Loko Fishpond.

This is such a beautiful video! I was practicing the hukilau hula dance that was the first hula dance I learned as a kid and realized I didn't really know what a hukilau was, which is why I searched for this video. Learning from you and your uncle was such a treat, and this video has so many wonderful lessons to teach us beyond just what a hukilau is 💖mahalo nui loa for creating this and recording your uncle's wisdom!
Editing this because I forgot to say, I will teach this history whenever I teach the hukilau dance now! I hope you tell your uncle that 😊

Thank you so much for your comment! I am so happy to hear this and my Uncle Fred would have been super thrilled, too. Unfortunately, he passed away earlier this year. I was able to visit him in February for his last birthday and I shared the comments I had received here. Teaching was his passion, along with fishing. I am so grateful that I was able to shoot this video and hear his stories. The challenge of editing this was the fact that he shared many stories about my own family history, which made it hard for me to focus on what to include. But I remembered that he told me, "I want to teach children about the hukilau." Then it made it clear to me that I needed to stay focused in this story and keep my family history in a second video. Thank you so much for taking the time to say your kind words. Mahalo!

    Beautiful, simply beautiful.
All my life, and I'm old now, i always thought a hukilau was a beach party, and sometimes people wanted to fish! Close, I guess. Ha! ☺️ Thank you for the beautiful, educational video! I now have a better understanding! 🐠🐟🦈🐟🐠🐠🐟🦈🐠

Thank you for watching! My Uncle Fred really wanted to reshoot this video because he felt the kids didn’t catch enough fish. I told him it was good enough to tell the story. His health isn’t so good now, and probably won’t have another opportunity to take us to the fish pond. Mahalo!

Wonderful video! What a fantastic way to share a great part of Hawaiian history. I'm to have to start practicing that song (and tiny bubbles for Bachan) on my ukulele. Thank you for sharing!

What a wonderful video and story. Hukilau to me was the lounge for dinner and dancing that used to be here in my town and actually run by a family from Hawaii. It used to be a very popular and classy place. Now I understand more. Thank you!
