- Imagine you have around £100,000 to spend on an SUV and six friends to carry. The thing is, you're always in a massive hurry, so you absolutely must own the quickest car for the job. To answer this most first-world of problems, I pitch the diesel-powered Audi SQ7 - complete with magnificent 4.0-litre V8 - against the Tesla Model X 100D to find out which is fastest.
In the last of my internal combustion vs battery power face-offs, the Tesla Model S managed to edge out the Nissan GT-R. So can the pride of fossil fuels really rely on a diesel SUV? Find out as I put the pair through their paces.

Good question! We tried it both ways, and simply mashing the throttle turned out to be about 0.5 secs quicker for the SQ7. Sometimes the method you suggest can be quicker, but not in this case :)

It just says "offroad" on the satnav because he actually isn't on a plotted road. If you look left on the rev counter it says dynamic.

Why would someone compare the acceleration between a petrol car and an electric car, the outcome was obvious. Compare interior, driving experience, confort...things that actually matter.

That sq7 has a claimed range of 34 mpg combined with a 19 gallon fuel tank which takes the range to 650miles way more than the tesla plaid plus

Actually the Tesla Model x was created as a direct rivalry for the Audi q7 because Elon Musk hated the back seats when he was dropping his children in Tution and piano classes. They felt uncomfortable.

as a Q7 owner, I would swap for model X anytime. It takes £120 to fill my tank compared to free supercharging from Tesla.... also I pay £515 road tax and london congestion charge... tesla is free. say what you want, electric car is the future.

Near future is probably going to be focussed on power to gas solutions and far away future is probably something far more radical than traditional electric cars. There are simply too many problems with batteries as a source of energy(storing energy in electric form in general). A hydrogen-reactor would be far superior.
Fill your car with methanol just like you would fill it up with any other fuel, car makes its own hydrogen from it and propells you electrically.
This is what i think could be „the future“. Noone knows for certain tho...

Not really, electric cars are great, but at the moment, they’re all terrible for reliability (especially Tesla) and range anxiety is a huge issue
Hydrogen power is the best option but that’s yet to be used in its full form commercially.

I do 40k miles a year - I've yet to witness a Tesla being driven quickly. I have never seen one being driven in anyway aggressively. They're always in the slow lane or gently cruising an A or B road. Why? I'm sure it's because the driver is worried about running out of battery. So, in real world living, are they actually a very low performance car?

Okay, so....I really dont understand how the heavier tesla with standard brakes can stop more quickly than the lighter SQ7 with ceramic brakes....physics much? Or did the SQ7 driver just not brake properly?

How does weight distribution make a difference? You have a vehicle at a certain speed and mass -> level of energy. If you remove the energy (via breaking) completely, the vehicle stops...so the major factors are the speed, the mass of the vehicle, and the ability to remove energy from the moving vehicle, aka how fast/good the brakes are...
Maybe the tires are another factor that hindered the SQ7 tho...

Ceramic brakes = publicity stunt. They work fine only when they're hot, so... not great for a "city" car, but great for racing and all that stuff.
If this drag race had been done with the P100DL, it would have been totally different.

on a X p90DL, after several accelerations over 200km/h, and staying at ~180-190km/h the power limit dropped to 120kW :/

If you honestly care about looks over the fact that tesla is years ahead of its time, then you probably just want to show off.
The X can look pretty nice with bigger rims and a tint. This is the most "stripped" X you can get as far as appearance.
Yeh tesla wins all around except in looks. To some its ugly, to others its pretty, I say its pretty ugly. Absolutely fails in sex appeal whereas the sq7 got that sexy babe thing going on. Even the Tesla S models lose in sex appeal. Elon needs to put out a sexy luxury sports coupe but I dunno, maybe he's a family man focusing more on wagons for the masses, but yeah, all credit to him for bringing us this far. That isn't a P100D. That appears to be a lower range model. The P100D is 0-60 in 2.9 seconds (or less). It'd devastate any fuel-based SUV, and indeed, most supercars (in a drag race).
Pull out your head from youtube and live some real life! Outhere are A LOT of cars not only faster than p100d, but with a huuuuge range advantage when is driven at highspeed or brutal accelerations. You just need to compare apples with apples, not apples with bricks, that's all the smart that you need! LEARN what is it wheel power, which is torque lost in awd torsen ..then you'll see how would be a fair versus test.

Ben But year on year road tax, petrol and engine maintenance make it considerably more expensive long term, range isn't actually much more in real driving conditions, it has less space in the back in my opinion making it less of an SUV and lost in every test in the video. I do prefer the interior in my Audi over Teslas but I see a lot of easily rebuked arguments against electric cars when what people really mean is "I grew up liking combustion engines and I won't like anything else". A few years of mass production electric cars has already equalled about 80 years of mass produced consumer combustion engines so whether folk like it or not it is the next paradigm.

The SQ7 didn't look very comfortable from the 3rd row. I doubt you could keep 2 fitted baby seats (which you didn't have to break your back to fit) and still access the 3rd row. I think the Model X is more practical, safer, and has a cool factor which will win over a lot of potential SQ7 customers. As a bonus you don't need to do any maintenance whatsoever for 2 years and you'll never have to stop for Diesel; charge at home once a week instead.

When you're talking about a comparison between an electric motor (not an engine) and a dieselmotor of course the performance of an electric motor would be better? An engine is producing is own energy out of fuel while an electric car gets already produced energy and then produce the mechanical energy. So stop saying a diesel engine is a crappy engine, when you dont know anything.
