Coming home from "away" to a clean house is the 100% "gold standard" for a happy return. It feels AMAZING and adds to the "aaaahh" feeling when you get there. Often people think that they are going away to "rest" and feel refreshed, but honestly (at least in my book) it happens when you sink into your own chair/sofa/other home furniture because traveling has it's own brand of being tiring.

I deep clean my house before I go on vacation. I mentioned to coworkers once that I had to go clean my house before vacay and they laughed at me, lol. Glad I’m not the only one, Becky. You probably won't see this, but I just wanna say that I love that you are incorporating videos that don't include kitchen and gardening work. I absolutely love your homesteading videos!!!! I promise I'm not complaining! But I tend to forget that you have other priorities other than a massive garden and making everything from scratch. We just got back from a month away. We left our house spotless and also shut down our gardens this year because we knew we would not be home. (Fallow summer with silage tarps), so yes Becky we love coming home to a clean house for sure! ❤️
Becky, not only do I leave my house clean but if I can do the laundry while we are gone I’m happy. Then when we walk in the door I can just unpack and have a cup of coffee❤
For the fiddle leaf fig, around once or twice a week, grab the trunk and give it a vigorous shake for about 30 seconds. This simulates wind and helps it to strengthen its trunk. A weak trunk can cause the canopy to become too heavy for the trunk and it may snap.
Ugh. I’ve been doing this & either it’s not working or it’s a slow process & I’m super impatient. Mine keeps getting taller. I want to notch her, but that spot isn’t hardened yet. 😭
You don't have to be on a strict schedule for cleaning...as a single mom who raised two boys.(awesome adults now)..a full time job and 2 part time ones at times...you do your best...the world will not implode if your frig is not spotless...give your self grace...focus on family ❤
You spoke my words! I tried to wipe down the inside of the fridge the day before I went to the grocery store but I don't think that will help for a homesteader who doesn't go shopping once a week.

I love how proactive you are, when I travel if our visit is a stay to a home that has accessibility to laundering services I wash, dry n fold all laundry for everyone in their suitcases so we also come home with clean laundry and can then rotate that laundry right into drawers, closets etc. In the evenings or when the weather was funky or when we would just be hanging out at the house I'd make good use of my time. I didn't want to have to come home to do a Single thing. Most of the time the preparation to travel is a lot, as well then the travel itself especially as a momma. Anything we can do to give ourselves a bit of ease is greatly appreciated. Good luck on your travels have an amazing time you definitely deserve a reset.
That was so satisfying watching that fridge deep clean!! Looks amazing!! One thing I learned recently is if you keep your milk & cream toward the back of the refrigerator where it's coldest it lasts almost a week longer than it does on the door! Thought I would share that, thought it was a good to know fun fact. I hope you enjoyed your vacation, you absolutely deserved it!!
That section of my fridge freezes stuff 😬. Maybe that's why it keeps stuff longer for you! We end up keeping milk in the door frequently so it's always liquid when we need it haha
We use to laugh at Mom when we were kids because she always cleaned the house top to bottom before we went away, we thought it was in case we were burgled 😂😂. I must admit I do the same now 🤗. Enjoy your break have fun x
Yes, I make sure the house is clean: floors vacuumed/moped, bed linen washed and put back on, bathrooms clean, all garbage cans emptied and both our vehicles cleaned before we leave so I don't have to face it when we get back ~ 🙌
Yes, before I leave town I scrub my house clean. All laundry is done. Clean sheets on the bed, empty dishwasher, empty trash cans and a cleaned fridge.
I have been growing Christmas cactus for over 40 years. One thing of importance, for flowering they like natural light best. Mine have always done best in a corner of the room that does not get a lot of artificial light, especially in the fall as the days get shorter. The longer hours of darkness are the trigger for flower setting. Good luck. When you see the first little flower buds this fall you will be so excited. When the flowers appear, do not move it to another area. You can gently rotate the plant so the flowers are towards the room, but major movement makes the flowers drop off. I look forward to seeing your success with your house plants.

In my former life I did all that, now I just make sure the kitchen is clean, trash is thrown, and I don’t stress or fret about my homecoming, just enjoy my time away! Life is good anyway you slice it! Enjoy your vacation n family!

A tip for storing lids for the glass food containers: put them in a plastic storage bin on the shelf. Keps them contained and not falling everywhere when pulling out the shelf. Works great.
Costco and travel!😊 my BBF and me spent 2 weeks on Oahu. After arriving, our 1st stop was CostCo. In addition to picking up beach chairs and towels, we hit the food isle. String cheese, sandwich ham and chips. Every day we packed a lunch/snacks. We took the ham and wrapped it around the string cheese for dipping in some Dijon mustard. Chips oh and cheese/carmel popcorn too! It was easy, convenient and cheaper than eating out each day. This cost saving allowed us to spend more days in Hawaii. ❤
I have a granddaughter that is severely allergic to yellow dye. I am so thankful for Trader Joe’s. Sweet treats to pickles make her so happy. It’s crazy that all pickles have yellow dye in the ingredients. . So unless we make our own we have to buy at TJ. She is 1 of 7siblings and it makes her so happy when I find special things without dye.
Scrubbing my house before vacation is called “second vacation” in my house and we take that preparation as seriously as the vacation planning. It extends the relaxation from the vacation by several days and makes coming home less jarring

We did freeze dry mangoes this year and they are delicious! We were able to get over three dozen mangoes for $0.19 each and thought we would give it a try. It does take a long time to freeze dry however! I really appreciate your videos, thank you so much.
Yes! Have to have the house super clean. It would stress me out! It is so relaxing to come home to a clean house and relax! Well, until I have to clean and put up all the traveling items.
Oh, Becky, you can roll up a paper towel and place it on your trays between items to freeze dry. It keeps liquids from running into other foods. Can work with your herbs too 😊
So I actually learned this year that the top of the door of a fridge is actually the warmest part of your refrigerator. I put my set aside yogurt starter there and it molded before the main container did. So after reading about it I never put dairy in the top of the door. Just a little 🌈 the more you know tip ❤
I just deep cleaned my fridge two weeks ago, found two science experiments in the way back! Lol. Today I canned 12 peach jam for the winter. Tomorrow is roasting organic chickens to pressure can with broth. Can’t wait for canuary!

Becky, I too like to clean things up before we leave for a few days. We go camping in our camper for a week to 10 days from May through September. It’s hectic, because I have to clean the house before we leave and have to completely clean the camper before we come home. It is a lot of work, but I love sitting in the camper in a nice shaded lot while my husband can just fish his heart away. Then we can sit around a campfire in the evening and enjoy the sunsets with other campers. There’s nothing like fresh fried trout with garlic lemon sauce and air fried seasoned potatoes with a side salad. Leaving in a week…can’t wait😊❤
The first time I cleaned my new fridge I took it all apart and had a terrible time putting it back together 😆. I was so frustrated but I figured it out and was so proud of myself. 😊

My husband and my autistic children have been taking care of food, cleaning and shopping. My mother-in-law is losing her battle with cancer and we have to call hospice. Ha! I’m on my way home from Montana! I travel there every 1-2 months to visit my mom, but this was a vacation with one son and my husband. We visited old friends, did some needed organizing at mom’s and had some mountain fun. I also need a clean house when leaving, though I usually have my housekeeper come while we are gone. Hope you’re having a great time with family.
I always do the same things before a trip. Clean house, fridge, laundry done, dishwasher clean and emptied, all trash taken care of and all bed linens clean. It’s so nice to come home from a trip, shower and climb into clean sheets!
Kudos to Becky and everyone that has the time and ambition to clean your entire house before a vacation. Someone is always in my house when I'm gone, so deep cleaning seems pointless. I always come home from vacay on a Friday so that I have the weekend to unpack and clean before heading back to work. As for deep cleaning the car or fridge, I do it when I can't stand to look at it anymore. I just don't have the time to do something that intensive on a monthly basis.

The Trader Joe’s mushroom umami seasoning is 🔥. I wonder if you freeze dry mushrooms, grind them up, and add the other seasonings if you’ll have a dupe of it? And, yes, I have to come home to a clean house or else I’m stressed out.

The clear plastic cutting mats from dollar tree (in the kitchen section, they come in a 2 pack) work great to line with. I got that tip years ago and put them in mine and they look great and clean up so easy!
I always clean my home before I go anywhere, I love to comeback to everything tidy and laundry done… I also make I list and check them off for everything like you…
When I unload my freeze dryer I use a pretty big sheet of parchment paper. It really helps to keep the contents of the trays from going all over. I also use the green goddess on eggs and the chili lime on corn for tacos and burritos.

Here in America, he has 2 which every fall his children make a 4 ft trench and coaxes the tree to bend and lay covered with leaves, old carpets to protect it from the harsh Midwest weather. Now he’s gone, my son does the same and the fruit is delicious.❤❤❤😊😊😊
I love your variety of content, from gardening to shopping, canning, and preservation. You inspire me to try so many things. I've hardly gone on vacations but I have cleaned many a fridge. I take all shelves and drawers out and wash them all together in the bathtub in a few inches of water and a bit of antibacterial cleaner (of course I wipe the tub out first with a paper towel to make sure it's free of any stray hairs, etc.). Use your best judgement on glass shelves. I just make sure they are on the bottom and the water isn't high enough for them to be bumping around. The shower head thingy on a hose works great to rinse. I lay a towel next to the tub for the parts to drip dry on while I go spray and wipe down the fridge. Dry everything and slap it all back together. Even better if your kitchen is close to the bathroom.
Becky you are amazing! I have never left the house clean. I am lucky enough to get all our stuff and each kid out the door on time! I was born without the organization and clean gene. My mother didn’t have it either. One of my sisters did get that gene and I just got housekeepers 😅 That aside, I love coming home no matter the condition if the house because it’s my home! Nothing like traveling makes me appreciate it more and I am then more motivated to tidy when I come back then when I leave.
I’m with you! I have the gene, but even with my kids grown up, I’m still just happy to leave on time! I’m always so grateful to be home, I don’t care what it looks like! And I’ve never changed my sheets - never occurred to me!
I definitely would have packed a carry on with garden produce! My son was just visiting from Oregon, and I sent him back with dome home grown garden goodies!

You have a lot of drawers, shelves, and segments. I like to take out a shelf or two, drawer or two, etc... per week or so and do a throughal cleaning of those elements. At the same time im throughly going through a portion of the contents.
My mother in law gave me a cutting of her Christmas cactus forty years ago. Ive read they don't last for long they like to stay in the the same place and they will be fine. Unfortunately ive moved quite a few times but as i say it's still with me ,it hasn't grown much but it flowers every Christmas. People have told me to stick it in the bin but i can't because every Christmas when it flowers it brings back happy memories. Plus there must be some reason its still here.

Trust me, once baby is eating (homemade) snacks in ur car, ull be cleaning everything in the car at least once a week, maybe daily!! Just something to maybe eliminate some of the work, lay ur older bath towels on the floorboards under the car seat, so much easier to shake out, soak up spilled juices and throw into the laundry!! Another idea for directly under the car seat itself, put the larger sized puppy pads to soak up wet spills. Where a towel would soak up spills, it would also soak the seat that babies seat sits on...hope that makes sense!! Just some tips I remember from 25 and 35 yrs ago! I'm sure ur sisters (sister-in-laws) have shared their fav tips also!! I hope u had a great actual vacation!! Family time is so necessary for mental health, i'm happy u hav a lot of family!! I can't seem to watch your videos in one sitting. You tend to motivate me so much that i have to turn it off, run and do something then come back. In the time it took me to watch this one I've started the laundry, cleaned out the fridge, washed dishes, vacuumed, grated and juiced some lemons that were getting old and made myself a cup of tea. Whew! Finally watched it all. Now im going to wipe down my dining room chairs, then probably mop the floors. Thank you Becky for helping me keep my home in order!❤❤❤
I put a wet washcloth in the microwave for 30 seconds to get it hot and use a little soap. Cleans the sticky stuff better. Considering the new baby and garden the frig looks normal.
Becky, all looks fantastic! I would encourage you to water the fiddle leaf from the bottom roots (let the roots drink it up) as opposed to pouring water on the top! My fiddle leaf seems to love it, and it’s going on year three.

I dehydrated my homemade salsa and then whizzed it up and I use it in my taco meat along with my homemade taco seasoning. I can not leave my house dirty when I leave because it's always a mess when you come back with at least a couple loads of wash from the suitcase. Have a great vacation.
I always deep clean my house before we leave on vacation! We LOVE Trader Joes and we have to drive a couple of hours and cross the boarder to shop there, so it's an extra special treat to do so! We were in the US recently and we went to Trader Joes 7 times in 5 days! Our favorite spice blends are Chile Lime, Everything but the Elote, Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic and Ajika. Looking forward to them bringing back the Pumpkin Pie Spice! This trip my favorite finds were the Harissa paste and the Gochujang.
They sell semi industral vacuums for the garage that attach to the wall for optimal space. 😊 one of my dreams in the garage 😂 hope you had a fantastic time with your loved ones! God bless
I'm glad to see it is not only me that has to clean like this before I go away. Also, I believe the cactus you have is a Thanksgiving cactus, not much difference from the Christmas cactus. They also like bright indirect light. In the future when you are considering other house plants I recommend a Jade plant. They are super forgiving and easy going. I love watching your channel. Yes, I have a Christmas Cactus and I don't think they like to be moved. I also found refreshing the compost in it's pot helped.

You can buy boxes of baking soda made to go in the fridge or freezer. I also use them in closets.
Piece of charcoal also keeps it smellfree

A tip for storing lids for the glass food containers: put them in a plastic storage bin on the shelf. Keps them contained and not falling everywhere when pulling out the shelf. Works great.
I used to use magazine holders. I don’t have the space anymore, but it worked really well.
I love coming home to my own clean bed and bath. Fresh sheets are a must, I leave cleaner in the T bowls, and dump baking soda in the sink drains. 😊
Costco and travel!😊 my BBF and me spent 2 weeks on Oahu. After arriving, our 1st stop was CostCo. In addition to picking up beach chairs and towels, we hit the food isle. String cheese, sandwich ham and chips. Every day we packed a lunch/snacks. We took the ham and wrapped it around the string cheese for dipping in some Dijon mustard. Chips oh and cheese/carmel popcorn too! It was easy, convenient and cheaper than eating out each day. This cost saving allowed us to spend more days in Hawaii. ❤
I absolutely pick up and clean before I leave. One thing I like to do is make sure that the sheets on my bed are clean and that it is made.
I have a granddaughter that is severely allergic to yellow dye. I am so thankful for Trader Joe’s. Sweet treats to pickles make her so happy. It’s crazy that all pickles have yellow dye in the ingredients. . So unless we make our own we have to buy at TJ. She is 1 of 7siblings and it makes her so happy when I find special things without dye.
Scrubbing my house before vacation is called “second vacation” in my house and we take that preparation as seriously as the vacation planning. It extends the relaxation from the vacation by several days and makes coming home less jarring

We did freeze dry mangoes this year and they are delicious! We were able to get over three dozen mangoes for $0.19 each and thought we would give it a try. It does take a long time to freeze dry however! I really appreciate your videos, thank you so much.
Yes! Have to have the house super clean. It would stress me out! It is so relaxing to come home to a clean house and relax! Well, until I have to clean and put up all the traveling items.
Oh, Becky, you can roll up a paper towel and place it on your trays between items to freeze dry. It keeps liquids from running into other foods. Can work with your herbs too 😊

I love useing place mats on the refrigerator shelf it can come out be cleaned and go back in much lighter work for more often .
So I actually learned this year that the top of the door of a fridge is actually the warmest part of your refrigerator. I put my set aside yogurt starter there and it molded before the main container did. So after reading about it I never put dairy in the top of the door. Just a little 🌈 the more you know tip ❤

I just deep cleaned my fridge two weeks ago, found two science experiments in the way back! Lol. Today I canned 12 peach jam for the winter. Tomorrow is roasting organic chickens to pressure can with broth. Can’t wait for canuary!

Becky, I too like to clean things up before we leave for a few days. We go camping in our camper for a week to 10 days from May through September. It’s hectic, because I have to clean the house before we leave and have to completely clean the camper before we come home. It is a lot of work, but I love sitting in the camper in a nice shaded lot while my husband can just fish his heart away. Then we can sit around a campfire in the evening and enjoy the sunsets with other campers. There’s nothing like fresh fried trout with garlic lemon sauce and air fried seasoned potatoes with a side salad. Leaving in a week…can’t wait😊❤
The first time I cleaned my new fridge I took it all apart and had a terrible time putting it back together 😆. I was so frustrated but I figured it out and was so proud of myself. 😊

Hey sweet friend, thank you Becky for sharing your adventures with us. Wow, unfortunately I can't get out of my wheelchair to clean my refrigerator. My husband and my autistic children have been taking care of food, cleaning and shopping. My mother-in-law is losing her battle with cancer and we have to call hospice. Have a great trip as a family and please hug them and let them know that you love them. Have a blessed and beautiful Sunday and enjoy your vacation!!

I have kept my Christmas cactus alive since 2019-which absolutely is a record for me. It likes sitting on my window sill even in the winter.
TJ’s Cheese Powder blend is VERY yummy on popcorn, would be awesome on roasted potatoes too! I also love their dark chocolate covered mini pretzels and the Scandinavian Swimmies gummies! Now I’m thinking it’s time for me to make another trip to TJ’s! ☺️

Ha! I’m on my way home from Montana! I travel there every 1-2 months to visit my mom, but this was a vacation with one son and my husband. We visited old friends, did some needed organizing at mom’s and had some mountain fun.
I also need a clean house when leaving, though I usually have my housekeeper come while we are gone. Hope you’re having a great time with family.
I always do the same things before a trip. Clean house, fridge, laundry done, dishwasher clean and emptied, all trash taken care of and all bed linens clean. It’s so nice to come home from a trip, shower and climb into clean sheets!
Kudos to Becky and everyone that has the time and ambition to clean your entire house before a vacation. Someone is always in my house when I'm gone, so deep cleaning seems pointless. I always come home from vacay on a Friday so that I have the weekend to unpack and clean before heading back to work. As for deep cleaning the car or fridge, I do it when I can't stand to look at it anymore. I just don't have the time to do something that intensive on a monthly basis.

The Trader Joe’s mushroom umami seasoning is 🔥. I wonder if you freeze dry mushrooms, grind them up, and add the other seasonings if you’ll have a dupe of it? And, yes, I have to come home to a clean house or else I’m stressed out.

The clear plastic cutting mats from dollar tree (in the kitchen section, they come in a 2 pack) work great to line with. I got that tip years ago and put them in mine and they look great and clean up so easy!
The mushroom & company umami blend from Trader Joe’s is lovely. It adds dimension to many dishes and really puts a mushroom gravy over the top.

I always clean my home before I go anywhere, I love to comeback to everything tidy and laundry done… I also make I list and check them off for everything like you…
When I unload my freeze dryer I use a pretty big sheet of parchment paper. It really helps to keep the contents of the trays from going all over. I also use the green goddess on eggs and the chili lime on corn for tacos and burritos.
Like you I always clean my house before going on vacation. Nothing better than coming home to a clean house.

Here in America, he has 2 which every fall his children make a 4 ft trench and coaxes the tree to bend and lay covered with leaves, old carpets to protect it from the harsh Midwest weather. Now he’s gone, my son does the same and the fruit is delicious.❤❤❤😊😊😊
I love your variety of content, from gardening to shopping, canning, and preservation. You inspire me to try so many things. I've hardly gone on vacations but I have cleaned many a fridge. I take all shelves and drawers out and wash them all together in the bathtub in a few inches of water and a bit of antibacterial cleaner (of course I wipe the tub out first with a paper towel to make sure it's free of any stray hairs, etc.). Use your best judgement on glass shelves. I just make sure they are on the bottom and the water isn't high enough for them to be bumping around. The shower head thingy on a hose works great to rinse. I lay a towel next to the tub for the parts to drip dry on while I go spray and wipe down the fridge. Dry everything and slap it all back together. Even better if your kitchen is close to the bathroom.

Becky you are amazing! I have never left the house clean. I am lucky enough to get all our stuff and each kid out the door on time! I was born without the organization and clean gene. My mother didn’t have it either. One of my sisters did get that gene and I just got housekeepers 😅
That aside, I love coming home no matter the condition if the house because it’s my home! Nothing like traveling makes me appreciate it more and I am then more motivated to tidy when I come back then when I leave.
I’m with you! I have the gene, but even with my kids grown up, I’m still just happy to leave on time! I’m always so grateful to be home, I don’t care what it looks like! And I’ve never changed my sheets - never occurred to me!
I definitely would have packed a carry on with garden produce! My son was just visiting from Oregon, and I sent him back with dome home grown garden goodies!
Vacuum seal the mushrooms and throw them in the freezer! They’re good for months and taste great!!
I’m someone who is an absolute cleaning maniac before I go out of town lol my husband just laughs and stays out of my way 😂 I love coming home to a spotless home though so it totally worth it!

You have a lot of drawers, shelves, and segments. I like to take out a shelf or two, drawer or two, etc... per week or so and do a throughal cleaning of those elements. At the same time im throughly going through a portion of the contents.
My mother in law gave me a cutting of her Christmas cactus forty years ago. Ive read they don't last for long they like to stay in the the same place and they will be fine. Unfortunately ive moved quite a few times but as i say it's still with me ,it hasn't grown much but it flowers every Christmas. People have told me to stick it in the bin but i can't because every Christmas when it flowers it brings back happy memories. Plus there must be some reason its still here.

Trust me, once baby is eating (homemade) snacks in ur car, ull be cleaning everything in the car at least once a week, maybe daily!! Just something to maybe eliminate some of the work, lay ur older bath towels on the floorboards under the car seat, so much easier to shake out, soak up spilled juices and throw into the laundry!! Another idea for directly under the car seat itself, put the larger sized puppy pads to soak up wet spills. Where a towel would soak up spills, it would also soak the seat that babies seat sits on...hope that makes sense!! Just some tips I remember from 25 and 35 yrs ago! I'm sure ur sisters (sister-in-laws) have shared their fav tips also!! I hope u had a great actual vacation!! Family time is so necessary for mental health, i'm happy u hav a lot of family!! Hi Becky , As you do, I clean out the fridge and do the laundry as best can be done , along with a house clean so we can come back to a fresh house. When we get home we have to unpack and put things away, so doing a few things before you leave is always better for the return trip.. I hope the trip was fun for you guys...

I can't seem to watch your videos in one sitting. You tend to motivate me so much that i have to turn it off, run and do something then come back. In the time it took me to watch this one I've started the laundry, cleaned out the fridge, washed dishes, vacuumed, grated and juiced some lemons that were getting old and made myself a cup of tea. Whew! Finally watched it all. Now im going to wipe down my dining room chairs, then probably mop the floors. Thank you Becky for helping me keep my home in order!❤❤❤
Becky, I repurposed some dill pickles that were soft. I dried them and turned them into a spice that I use in flavoring dips.

I put a wet washcloth in the microwave for 30 seconds to get it hot and use a little soap. Cleans the sticky stuff better. Considering the new baby and garden the frig looks normal.
It is so fulfilling to mark chores off the list.

Becky, all looks fantastic! I would encourage you to water the fiddle leaf from the bottom roots (let the roots drink it up) as opposed to pouring water on the top! My fiddle leaf seems to love it, and it’s going on year three.

My mother had a christmas cactus that was HUGE!! She had for years..she died in 2018 and AMAZINGLY my son has kept it alive!!
I dehydrated my homemade salsa and then whizzed it up and I use it in my taco meat along with my homemade taco seasoning. I can not leave my house dirty when I leave because it's always a mess when you come back with at least a couple loads of wash from the suitcase. Have a great vacation.
I always deep clean my house before we leave on vacation! We LOVE Trader Joes and we have to drive a couple of hours and cross the boarder to shop there, so it's an extra special treat to do so! We were in the US recently and we went to Trader Joes 7 times in 5 days! Our favorite spice blends are Chile Lime, Everything but the Elote, Cuban Style Citrusy Garlic and Ajika. Looking forward to them bringing back the Pumpkin Pie Spice! This trip my favorite finds were the Harissa paste and the Gochujang.
They sell semi industral vacuums for the garage that attach to the wall for optimal space. 😊 one of my dreams in the garage 😂 hope you had a fantastic time with your loved ones! God bless

Also, I believe the cactus you have is a Thanksgiving cactus, not much difference from the Christmas cactus. They also like bright indirect light.
In the future when you are considering other house plants I recommend a Jade plant. They are super forgiving and easy going.
