I started college in a double knit bell-bottomed pant suit. I believed myself to be beautiful. Of course, most days were bell-bottom jeans or cut-off shorts and hippie tops - I was an art major. But, double knit meant that I did not have to iron dresses or 'pant-suits'. I also did not have to put them in the dryer as they would not wrinkle if just washed and hung. I wore lots more pants than dresses because stockings were not optional. Texas. Hot, hot, hot. By the time I dragged myself through to graduation I only owned one dress. I had another at Mom's house to wear to church when I visited her. It was double knit. :)

Yes I made myself a double knit hot pink bell bottom and matching long vest when I went to university as a reaction to school uniforms. However I lived in Canada and had a 20 minute walk to the train station and a 15 minute walk from the station to the Hall building in Montreal. Polyester worked well from October to March. Plus as you said washable and no ironing.

I worked at a restaurant chain called Friendly’s in 1984, and our uniforms were all double knit polyester. You could spill ketchup on them and rinse them off with a hose sprayer and there’d be no stain at all. They were super uncomfortable but easy to maintain.

My first few sewing projects were polyester double knit. [I was a teen in the early 70s.] I remember one pantsuit with a vest ... I was a perfectionist and people would argue that I could never have made it!
Poly double knit is very easy to sew, and a good pressing makes it behave well. It's the perfect fabric for a 15 year old perfectionist using her mom's 1950s era Janome.
The fabric was hot, but I lived in San Diego, didn't wear it in summer, and didn't bother with a coat.
In college, I got my own sewing machine (Sears Craftsman) and switched from polyester to cotton velours and wools. In the decades since, my perfectionism has faded a bit, too.

I’ve never used the big plate that came with my Bernina. I’ve had the machine almost 30 years!!!
Those purple double knits are perfect for Daphnes costume! Double knits are super easy to work with. The light purple stripes hit in exactly the right spot!! Great fit!! Well done!
I just remembered a fabric that was popular in the late 60s early 70s. Bonded double knits!!! It was a heavy double knit and on the back side of the fabric they bonded a Trico (sp) like fabric. Talk about HOT!!! That stuff was so heavy!!! And so thick!! I remember making culottes out of it. I wore them to school and roller skating. I made a pair of pants out of that stuff too. One of the bonded knits I used had an almost foam like layer bonded between the knit and the Trico. YIKES !!

This brings me back to the very first episode of Scooby Doo. Of course, the girls' clothes were groovy. About this time in my youth, there was a new fabric called double-knit and Mom enrolled us in Stretch & Sew classes so we could learn how to sew stretchy fabrics. I made a pantsuit and was in a contest-fashion show at Montgomery Ward, in the basement. LOL. I was super hot in my pantsuit in Arizona. I do remember learning to cut open the sewn darts on the wider end and press them open, only if the fabric was too bulky. Now you know I am kinda old. Love your channel! The dress turned out so cute.

Former wearer of a red acetate double-knit mini-dress here, with a white stripe at the hem. I got the dress when I was in 4th grade, I think - 1968. Southern California does get fairly cold in the winter in Southern California. I most likely wore white tights with the dress. Girls weren’t allowed to wear coordinated pantsSUITS at my school until the next year; no uncoordinated pants & tops.
When we moved to a different town, we could wear “non-pantsuits,” but NO JEANS for girls until high school.
