It's definitely a song that indicates how their future (post EoA) sound would go. Ryan's probably the most clever with his bass parts he gets on that song for a while
Yes world so cold was the first mudvaybe song I picked up as a bass player and tried to learn. Then I got on not falling… after picking up and learning it I was much more confident as a bass player and was able to explore more technique and sounds eventually.
Had the pleasure of seeing Mudvayne in their early days. Ryan is amazing to see live. "Severed" from LD 50 has always been a favorite and it has great lines. Crazy drop tuning for the guitar, I'm the bass does as well 🤙
Same. I saw them in Dallas years ago. The most memorable part was looking up on the balcony and seeing Vinnie Paul watching the show... Rip to a legend 🙏
Your comment about Ryan's 300-400 Hz jogged a memory. They did something kind of interesting when they were recording the bass on this album. As well as recording Ryan's normal bass enclosures, their producer, Dave Bottrill, ran Ryan's bass through one of Greg's Mesa guitar cabinets to help bring out more of that midrange.
Great reaction and breakdown man, your face when you listen to Ryan is so rapt and happy, its fun to watch. Keep up the great work and keep exploring Mudvayne.
Im a dummy bassist, but I'm pretty sure he strums that short set of minor chords with Greg in the chorus. They show it way more in the other "alien" music video they did for this song. Its done in his signature showmanship-y style and he strums it on the neck. Unfortunately that video seems to only be available in like 240p:/ But its my favorite part of the song. I absolutely love jangly, clanky bass tones. Lol. But great analysis and breakdown as always dude! Love yer style! 3rd edit: if you're interested, the channel The Pirate Bass does an incredible cover of this one
My favorite Mudvayne song and the song that got me into the group. I swear Ryan is one of the most underrated bassists in metal/hard rock. Likewise, Ryan and Matt (the drummer) are an underrated rhythm section in the genre as well. Both are very technical and precise. I love Matt’s drum patterns and grooves.
-1 (negative 1) on LD50 is wild. The drums, the bass, vocals, guitar…the whole nine yards. The bass is a major standout for sure…in regards to this track, I’ve always been blown away by how the drums and bass play into one another. Just truly dynamic…it’s really busy but at the same time it fits relaxingly well
Not sure if anyone cares but this is a radio edit, so a couple of abbreviated sections (intro and bridge). And what's the time signature in the verse? 2 bars of 4/4 and a bar of 2/4? Great tune!
LD 50 is one of very few albums that I can listen to from start to finish without skipping a single track. Ryan is so fun to watch live. Saw them when this album came out. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him! Dude is wild on stage! One of the greatest bassist out there. Definitely doesn’t get enough recognition in my opinion.
OUT TO PASTURE! Probably not a popular one from the Mudvayne album but the bass line on it would make for a fantastic listen and analysis. It's my personal favorite from that album.
If you want something from one of Mudvayne's later albums, you should do a listen and study on "A New Game" from their 4th album, The New Game. That shines as far as Ryan's playing IMO.
The bridge part is basically all chords and tritones before the final chorus. Check out the album version to hear most of it, it’s a pretty great build up.
Forget to Remember is a great one of their later offerings that was popularized from its presence on the Saw soundtrack. It's from Lost and Found, so the bass isn't mixed as high as I'd like it, but Ryan has some great melodies that really carry the song. Separately, I'd be really interested in hearing you do some more Incubus breakdowns with their original bass player, Dirk Lance aka Alex Katunich! I think he was a big inspiration for all of the people our age.
This is just one of like 4 different videos they made for this song. They had the original one, the ghost ship one, and I'm pretty sure they had 2 other variations of the video as well. Great song, great album, hope to see them live someday.
Fun fact. They recorded Ryan Martinie's right hand with a shotgun mic on LD 50. The production on that by GGGarth was glorious. Sat with him for hours and talked about it.
I remember waking up one morning to get ready for school. Some time in High School... I'd always get up and have breakfast while watching music videos on MTV. They would always drop new videos in the morning and the video for "Dig" came on. I was like... "Fuckin' great... here we go with another face paint band."... I listened anyways and and was completely blown away by Ryan's playing style and sound. Been a fan ever since.
There was a bassist on YT many years ago who did a wonderful bass cover of Not Falling. Just went to look it up, his name is Andrew Battah and it's a video from 16 years ago, so it's gonna look like it's from 16 years ago, but the sound is still great. Def give it a listen.
The first two Mudvayne albums are BY FAR the only two of their records I can still listen to now. LD 50 and The End... are really interesting and way less typical "heavy rock" that they end up veering into.
First, I agree with other people saying you need to hear the album version, but second, I have never seen a video that clearly shows him playing this, so I've watched some covers on YT. You might want to check some of them out because it's truly an amazing piece and when you see how much work he's doing it'll only increase your appreciation for Ryan (and the people who manage to play it as well).
Awesome job breaking this down Now you got to do some tunes from their New Game and self-titled albums. Dull Boy, Do What You Do, Same Ol, or All Talk (they don’t have a video for that one but it’s a good song from their later catalog)
Love your videos! great pick of songs always! I'd request some Corrosion Of Conformity! Mike Dean is easily one of my favorite bass players, he recently left the band to work on his own stuff! But i'd love to see your breakdown on his work, as to which song that's a tough choice for me, Albatross is easily one of their most popular songs, Bass wise tho Born again for the last time is probably my fave
One element that I loved in LD50 is the way that the guitar and bass are almost EQd in the same range, so they can harmonize and even trade places in the traditional bass/guitar dynamic. When Ryan slides up the neck, Greg's rhythm guitar still fills out the low end really well. I felt like they lost some of that on their subsequent albums. Greg's guitar lives more in the mid-range, and Ryan more in the lows, post LD50.
I love your show and explanation on everyone’s techniques and song writing but I would like to know if you would ever do an interview with players like Ryan or any others and ask about their songwriting approach and techniques they’ve learned along the way. Thanks keep the awesome work
@@RyanGriffiths-r9k Yes although while Gouge Away is a great song, I don't think it'd be much of an interesting song to anlalyze the bass for. Debaser and Hey are better choices.

Severed from LD50 100%. There is no music video and it’s a little longer than some other songs but when I think Mudvayne bass that’s what I think. The lines are so good especially the intro bass line.
Perversion of a truth has to be one of the most gorgeous yet technical basslines ryan has written besides death blooms and since u already covered death blooms its time for perversion of a truth
So on LD 50 he originally recorded with a 4 string in drop B but would eventually play with a 5 string while having the higher strings still in drop B On The End Of All Things To Come he would bring back that 4 string in drop C And them on Lost and Found and thought the rest of his career he'd have a 5 String or a plethora of 5 Strings in G standard
No. LD50 was recorded in drop B and he tuned with the top string down to F. Then they went up to drop C with the top string being G, GCGCF. 4 string being CGCF. There’s a handful of songs on their last album that are even lower, maybe A. But 98% of Mudvayne has been drop C.
Hey man great video. Have you checked out the band Chat Pile? I’m no bass player so it may not be that interesting but it sounds cool. Frownland and Funny Man from the new album might be fun.

I hate to be that guy, but I've heard you use the word "accidental" to refer to outside notes a few times. An accidental just refers to a sharp or a flat. The key of G major has one accidental, as does the key of F major. Notes from outside of the key can either be borrowings from other keys or modes (i.e. an A natural in an otherwise C minor tonality can be a borrowing from C Dorian or C melodic minor, depending on context), or just simply playing "outside". Other than that, I've been digging the videos.
Glad you dig the videos, really appreciate that! Respectfully, that’s incorrect. Also, when looking up the properties of ‘accidentals’, here’s what it reads: “Accidentals alter the pitch of individual scale tones in a given key signature; *the sharps or flats in the key signature itself are not considered accidentals.”* This aligns with the schooling I’ve received. Accidentals step outside of the native key signature briefly, and quickly return when a new theme or phrase is introduced. This is also why when a new bar begins, the accidental can be ignored moving forward, as it’s overwritten by the key signature itself. This overwriting rule implies the short-term nature of accidentals.

you should be listening to the actual album version. this is the radio version that cut like 30 sec out of it.

And sweet bass playing in the stuff that was cut
