He bought me a Guiness, cause he said that's the only beer for us guitarists. Then we just basically sat there and drank our beer together. Before he left he said something though that I will never forget. He said in Swedish so I'm translating, "Dude practice at home, and never let them see you coming. See you at the show!" Just this really chill cool dude. I can see how media and crazy fucking fans make him go bonkers. He's just a man.
I met Ynvwie at a Dokken show in Ft Lauderdale ( 1991 i think, John Norum was in Dokken then.). I was star struck, shook his hand told him he was great.... He gave me a beer. " Thanks, you need a beer?"

Other guitarists have to hate on him a bit. No matter how good they get at sweep picking arpeggios his vibrato is flawless. As in unobtainable by mere mortals. Also, we all had that same look in our eyes the first time we heard him play. I do not care if you are Tosin Abbasi, Steve Via, or the guy at the corner store, everyone went slack-jawed and wide-eyed the first time they heard Yngwie.
yes, thank you for mentioning his vibrato. everyone is so focused on his speed and the mechanics of what he does, but without that vibrato, it's all meaningless. there's so much fire and soul in his playing. i was around and listening to guitar music when he appeared and we just didn't know what hit us. yes, he's a one trick pony, but man, what a trick....and it's his trick...he invented it and changed everybody's perception as he did it. not many people can say they did that.
Having been lucky enough to meet and play guitar for Yngwie, I can honestly say that he is actually a friendly and personable guy. He is very passionate about his music and that can come off as abrasive sometimes

Make no mistake , Yngwie changed how we looked at the guitar. When he hit the scene early 80s. NOBODY played like him. He's a very funny and sarcastic person when you meet him I think he's funny as hell but most people misunderstand his humor and think he's a douche bag. He's actually really a good guy. Some folks just don't get sarcasm anymore.
Yes, he's like "you surely can't touch this, and I know it". I find the over-confidence, arrogance and ego humorous and entertaining at this point of his life.
If someone is ALWAYS sarcastic (or must be "assumed to be"-??) then nothing they say can be taken seriously, which leads to: actual communication becoming an impossibility. -there's such a thing as: "too much" of ANYthing and EVERYthing. ...Also: "not being at fault because" someone is, literally, "making it impossible>" Just saying. {Also, yes: Yngwie has changed over the years, too. ... - which is a good thing.

The video evidence just doesn't support the rumors from the 80s. In fact I found most videos of him being enthusiastic to teach other players about his style or licks.
Ynqwie is amazing, he has amazing emotion and speed, technique, vibrato. people are just jealous , blind and deaf. They think they know him they have no clue! He is amazing!

For long time fans, it was pretty much the same stuff but with an orchestra. But for people who have never listened to him before, this would be a good introduction.
Yngwie changed my life. I listened to his first album when I was 18. I couldn't believe guitar music could be played like that. I reacted very similar to Mr Jamel. All my best to you and yours good sir...
Same here! I listen to a lot of different instrumental, classical, heavily guitar based music. I love Randy Rhoads but Yngwie was able to put out far more material since he survived his crash. I can only imagine what a meeting between Randy and Yngwie would be like, just so musically oriented it would make your head spin. It's funny that he doesn't get radio airplay in America but he's been the king of guitarists for decades.
Ehhhh. Not today no. He used to be incredible in his writing, but nowadays... not the same at all. Though I'd say he was in the top 100 greatest musicians of all time but 20+ years ago.

Same here. I've been listening since '86 also. Back then, Yngwie was always on top for speed and style. No one else like him. Everyone should listen to the album version of this...
For many years I never gave him a chance, I even saw him in concert when I was young and didn't even care he was playing. These days I'm in awe of him. All the hate he gets is based off of jealousy. This man is probably the world's best guitarist. He may not play the style you like but you better be dammed sure he can play your favorite style.
The negative feedback that Yngwie's gotten over the years was never really about his playing style-it was about his personality; how he got along with people. It's been said, for quite some time, that he was very arrogant and not friendly at all. Apparently that was indeed the case from his own testimony in his biography. But it was fueled by a lot of crap he had to deal with (managers, ex-wife, record companies stealing from him and not allowing him to produce his music the way he wanted to). He went bankrupt twice because of corporate theft which motivated him even more to become independent. Long story short-he's much more humble today than ever before. Unfortunately, the caliber of his music has gone down tremendously over recent years; production, song arrangements, writing... just utter trash today. I couldn't even get through his latest album, Blue Lighting, before hitting stop and I haven't gotten back to it since March 2019. Listen, no king rules forever but props go where they're due. He broke down musical barriers and paved the road for Neo-Classical Rock guitar. Not one headbanger knew what was an arpeggio before Malmsteen ascended the throne. He changed the game much like Edward Van Halen did before him, and Jimi Hendrix before him. There have been many legendary guitarists in between who "played" the game exceptionally well, but they didn't "CHANGE" it. Yngwie's one of those few. Love the channel! Peace.
What most don't realize as well, is that while most kids were out learning how to socialize with each other, he was inside sitting by his Sister mimicking with his guitar what She was playing for her Classical studies on the piano. He is a True Virtuoso!
Very true words I tried to listen to blue lightning but just couldn't get through it some of those songs are classic blues song and in my opinion he destroyed them. His music has been trash for quite some time now
i would change the tag ''Neo-classical-rock'' wich is spot on, to shred, no shredder would be doing them thing if not for malmsteen, we got glances at blackmore, hendrix and van halen, but shred comes directly from mr malsmsteen.
I've met yngwie and spent some time with him backstage and I can tell you he's a great guy, very humble and incredibly grateful for the love of his fans
Although I've heard about Yngwie for years, this is the first time that I've thoroughly watched one of his performances. I must say that his playing is unbelievable and majestic. For me it was a plastic cutout record in Guitar Player Magazine with "Black Star" on it in Mike Varney's Spotlight column. I cut it out, dropped it into my record player and did the face you reference. It was game over for me after that. Next up was to go to our town specialty record store and order the Steeler import at a huge cost. My jaw was on the floor.

The last time I saw Yngwie live was this past May of 22'. There was a girl next to me who said it was her first time hearing him. Hearing and seeing him for the first time, that is insane. She had tears in her eyes hearing him play. Yngwie has Taurus pedals that when he played them with his foot, the girl was literally shrieking. Hope you catch him live Jamal.
There is no way anyone can say Yngwie doesn’t have soul or feel, his vibrato is fantastic, and timing is perfect,he wrote that music, and it’s fantastic, you might not like it, you can’t deny that it is incredible music.
I’ve been listening to yngwie since he was in alcatrazz. People think he’s cocky but really he was just extremely confident. A lot of pissed off jealous guitar players at the time. Most who say he plays with no feel can’t play his stuff.
Having met him a few times, I csn say that he's not "cold" or has "no personality"... he's just reserved. He does enjoy a laugh, on occasion I liken him (personality only) to my next door neighbor who is a Vietnam vet. He keeps to himself, is reserved, and doesn't wish to deal with most people. He is a fast friend, a loving family man, and tells some of the raunchiest jokes around.... with his friends. Mr. Lannerbach, here, is very similar to my neighbor
You know what the best part about this is..ive been listening to Yngwie scince mid eighties and at that time the audience was so limited and at that time there wasn't many African Americans listening to stuff like this and I think its awesome that because of the internet everyone can come together and appreciate all genres of music..I love seeing how into you are and the appreciation you had for this...love your videos
Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen are the three guitarists who expanded the meaning of playing guitar. They might not be the best but they all have changed guitar playing significantly during their lifetimes that will be felt forever.
Yes great reaction dude! Aside from his incredible fretwork, the most amazing thing to me about Yngwie is his scalloped fretboards. The fretboard is actually scalloped out between the frets so that the slightest extra pressure from his fingers will result in a note that is sharp. He does not have the benefit of perfect pitch that comes from a standard fretboard. He must apply just the right amount of finger pressure to get those notes on pitch. His control, his intonation is unparalleled. Too much man, just too fucking much. Ynwie fucking Malmsteen, that's who.

If you listen to interviews by Paul Gilbert, Gus G, Loomis, Becker, Michael Romeo, Guthrie Govan, George Bellas, Joe Stump, Tom Hess, Petrucci etc... all roads lead back to Yngwie. He influenced all the top players. He is very highly regarded. That's why in my opinion he's the king. Cheers

When I saw Yngwie perform Far Beyond the Sun live I was completely moved. I teared up its was so intense. I had never heard the song like that before. I think my girl was nice enough to pretend she didn’t notice the tears lol.

The G.O.A.T!!! Saw him in 85. I had been playing for 7 years and I would go to the Charlotte Coliseum with my binoculars to learn everybody's tricks. Yngwie made me put the specs down and just enjoy his masterful playing style. My Son met him when we went to a NAMM show in Anaheim. Totally classy guy. Spoke with Jr. like they were friends. My Son was just 18 and gave Yngwie one of his CD's. He said thank you very much and said not many people give him their original music. We saw him again last year and he is just as amazing as always. Small crowd but he put on a performance for Madison Square Garden. Like I said. THE GOAT!!!

This is one of the guitar gods. Absolutely one of the best ever. In our lifetime for sure. He's up there with Al Di Meola which I think is the best guitarist, but that's just me. Just listen and watch him play. This is getting close to as good as it gets.
I've watched him since he came over from Sweden and started with the band Steeler, then Alcatraz and on to Rising Force til he went with his own name. His Auto-biography was a great read. I've read it several times. Thanks for the reviews of Yngwie. Much appreciated.

This is Yngwie’s comfort zone. He was trained in classical music and that is his first love. Becoming a rock guitarist was inevitable due to his talent but he’s a Mozart Vivaldi Beethoven head!

First! Yngwie is a great player, but if you want one more, that was taken WAY too early, check out Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn, Altitudes, or Air. Or Becker's band with Megadeth's Marty Friedman, Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony (the song). At the age of 16, he formed Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman. He also played with David Lee Roth's band and recorded one album with him, A Little Ain't Enough (ALS got to him before they could even tour). Becker's performing career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In 1996, Becker lost the ability to speak, and he now communicates with his eyes via a system developed by his father. Despite his disability, he continues composing by using a computer. The guy is an inspiration, not only for his guitar skills, but also for the way he's been battling ALS for over 20 years now, still composing music. (To get an idea of what he composes, check out his latest masterpiece, Valley of Fire, it's got 10 or so top tier guitarists playing on it, it's incredible!)
Jason Becker is still alive, but yes his disease did rob him of awesome talents at a very early age. Jason Becker is STILL a hero for many, especially for surviving with ALS for so long. He was basically given a death sentence, but he's shown that victims of ALS don't have succumb to their disease, and they can still do great things.
He is one of the greatest of all time... and he has been my inspiration since 2007 when I heard about him and also I have learned sweep picking with his songs. So I will love to see a reaction.
I’ve saw Yngwie 4 times over the years. First timer was with the AWESOME Joe Lynn Turner on vocals and that was a special almost spiritual night....... I met both Yngwie and Joe after the show and they were both very gracious and spent a bit of time signing things for folks and chatting very polite and friendly. Yngwie is a pretty tall dude too at about 6’4” !!! Great evening topped off with a meet with the modern Mozart himself ! The other three were just as brilliant and one in particular on the Eclipse tour I took my copy of the guitar transcription book for that album with me to get it personalised which Yngwie did and the most awesome part was that there were 2 minor errors on the first print and he went direct to the pages and wrote it out as it should be in the space above the printed area on both pages ..... I was gobsmacked at this. I’d also interviewed the support act who were a Swiss act called China earlier in the day on their tour bus. I’d taken my friend Greg along to the show as I’d recently got him into Yngwie. Greg & I met at bandcamp (how appropriate !!) this was back home in Scotland and the show was in our capital city Edinburgh at the 3000 seat Playhouse which was sold out surprisingly enough !!! I remember Greg being totally speechless for the entire show and for about an hour or two after it and the first thing he said was thanks and a massive hug, then “WTF DID I JUST SEE ?????” I knew he was hooked from then on..... we lived in the same town so I managed to give him a full education on Yngwie after that as I did have the full collection including his Alcatrazz stuff he did before going solo. I have to admit that I looked up the setlist for that night and it was as follows (Jamel, this is also a great set list for you to react to as you get to them too.) Yngwie was a ground breaker and has his very own style , I very much enjoyed his first 3 albums, just awesome!!!...the issues with yngwie is the next 20 albums didn't come close , AND they all sound the same , endless dull boring shredding nothing close to those first 3 efforts, it's yngwie though I like him to a point.
Rising Force Marching out and Alcatrazz. Then some albums after than have some ok stuff here and there. Eclipse is ripping actually i put it up there with the first two. It is pretty much solid all the way through though the production is kind of meh. I was actually bored of his albums by that time and that album brought me back. Fire and Ice is pretty decent as well.
darren - everybody likes anybody to a point, but that doesn't take anything away from his greatness. Yngwie is one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, and no one can ever take that away from him. He's a legend. Btw... Odyssey, Eclipse, Seventh Sign, Magnum Opus, and the Concerto are also great albums with some of his best playing.
@@epic103 I disagree with you, everybody does not like yngwie to a point , to some folks his playing is nothing but flash and rubbish....a shrill borefest...i have friends like this..and I would turn off anything from say Madonna or red not chilli peppers and all rap, they are examples of musicians I do not like AT ALL....me personally was dazzled by him (yngwie) , he influenced me, I still like picking up my guitars and playing in his style....the concerto album was alright , magnum opus, has some great stuff , time will tell, and voodoo nights ECT. I don't know how I missed you putting this up. It just popped up for me today. When Yngwie debuted I was learning to play keyboard and drums but wished soooooo much I could play guitar. A couple of friends told me that a kid our age was burning up the scene. They introduced me to Steeler and Alcatrazz, two bands Yngwie stole the show in at just 15-17 years old. I fell in love with his guitar playing that day. Here it is almost 40 years later and I still love his music. When someone tells me they think he plays without feeling I just point them to Serenade by Steeler, Kree Nakoorie from Alcatrazz or the title track from Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force's CD Dragonfly. They're some of the pieces you can hear his talent's range in and in the performances from back in the day it's obvious how much love he had for playing/performing.
Jeff Scott Soto is now in the band Son’s of Apollo. He sound is different but still awesome. You need to check it out. Billy Sheenan is in the band also
Saw him play at The Bayou up in Georgetown DC back in the 90s. Awesome memory. Was very lucky I got a guitar pick that Malmsteen handed while playing on stage. Guy's peerless.
Your reaction was great. Same reaction I had the first time I heard Yngwie play, some 30 years ago. I'm a classical guitarists and electric guitarist and Yngwie has ALWAYS been my favourite electric player.
I think people are inclined to be harder on Yngwie because he both sets the bar for technique outrageously high, and has the audacity to remind you constantly in interviews. He plays a kind of shit-talking WWF heel role that musicians rarely play. He also seems bitter at how the world has moved on from his style of metal I disagree with people saying his playing has no soul. But his playing has gotten sloppier in recent years from what I've seen.
You can say anything you want about the man he is but his passion for playing has never been subdued. He has an amazing amount of flair and although legato it is still truly incredible what he is able to coax out of the instrument. As far as guitar players go he has innovated and produces a sound and style all his own in modern music. Stop hating and just listen, he has some but not many parallels. I have seen him live and it is for certain an experience you will not forget. Stop trying to overanalyze his playing or personality and just listen to the something wonderful that he is. I have been playing for over 20yrs+ and cannot do half of what he does. Not saying it is impossible but you should find it impressive on some level or another. Be positive in your critique and understanding no matter how advanced you are at either the instrument or music, please.

Same here! I listen to a lot of different instrumental, classical, heavily guitar based music. I love Randy Rhoads but Yngwie was able to put out far more material since he survived his crash. I can only imagine what a meeting between Randy and Yngwie would be like, just so musically oriented it would make your head spin. It's funny that he doesn't get radio airplay in America but he's been the king of guitarists for decades.

This man is probably the world's best guitarist. He may not play the style you like but you better be dammed sure he can play your favorite style.

The negative feedback that Yngwie's gotten over the years was never really about his playing style-it was about his personality; how he got along with people. It's been said, for quite some time, that he was very arrogant and not friendly at all. Apparently that was indeed the case from his own testimony in his biography. But it was fueled by a lot of crap he had to deal with (managers, ex-wife, record companies stealing from him and not allowing him to produce his music the way he wanted to). He went bankrupt twice because of corporate theft which motivated him even more to become independent. Long story short-he's much more humble today than ever before. Unfortunately, the caliber of his music has gone down tremendously over recent years; production, song arrangements, writing... just utter trash today. I couldn't even get through his latest album, Blue Lighting, before hitting stop and I haven't gotten back to it since March 2019. Listen, no king rules forever but props go where they're due. He broke down musical barriers and paved the road for Neo-Classical Rock guitar. Not one headbanger knew what was an arpeggio before Malmsteen ascended the throne. He changed the game much like Edward Van Halen did before him, and Jimi Hendrix before him. There have been many legendary guitarists in between who "played" the game exceptionally well, but they didn't "CHANGE" it. Yngwie's one of those few. Love the channel! Peace.

I've met yngwie and spent some time with him backstage and I can tell you he's a great guy, very humble and incredibly grateful for the love of his fans

For me it was a plastic cutout record in Guitar Player Magazine with "Black Star" on it in Mike Varney's Spotlight column. I cut it out, dropped it into my record player and did the face you reference. It was game over for me after that. Next up was to go to our town specialty record store and order the Steeler import at a huge cost. My jaw was on the floor.

The last time I saw Yngwie live was this past May of 22'. There was a girl next to me who said it was her first time hearing him. Hearing and seeing him for the first time, that is insane. She had tears in her eyes hearing him play. Yngwie has Taurus pedals that when he played them with his foot, the girl was literally shrieking. Hope you catch him live Jamal.
There is no way anyone can say Yngwie doesn’t have soul or feel, his vibrato is fantastic, and timing is perfect,he wrote that music, and it’s fantastic, you might not like it, you can’t deny that it is incredible music.

I’ve been listening to yngwie since he was in alcatrazz. People think he’s cocky but really he was just extremely confident. A lot of pissed off jealous guitar players at the time. Most who say he plays with no feel can’t play his stuff.
Having met him a few times, I csn say that he's not "cold" or has "no personality"... he's just reserved. He does enjoy a laugh, on occasion
I liken him (personality only) to my next door neighbor who is a Vietnam vet. He keeps to himself, is reserved, and doesn't wish to deal with most people. He is a fast friend, a loving family man, and tells some of the raunchiest jokes around.... with his friends.

Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen are the three guitarists who expanded the meaning of playing guitar. They might not be the best but they all have changed guitar playing significantly during their lifetimes that will be felt forever.

Yes great reaction dude! Aside from his incredible fretwork, the most amazing thing to me about Yngwie is his scalloped fretboards. The fretboard is actually scalloped out between the frets so that the slightest extra pressure from his fingers will result in a note that is sharp. He does not have the benefit of perfect pitch that comes from a standard fretboard. He must apply just the right amount of finger pressure to get those notes on pitch. His control, his intonation is unparalleled. Too much man, just too fucking much. Ynwie fucking Malmsteen, that's who.

If you listen to interviews by Paul Gilbert, Gus G, Loomis, Becker, Michael Romeo, Guthrie Govan, George Bellas, Joe Stump, Tom Hess, Petrucci etc... all roads lead back to Yngwie. He influenced all the top players. He is very highly regarded.

The G.O.A.T!!! Saw him in 85. I had been playing for 7 years and I would go to the Charlotte Coliseum with my binoculars to learn everybody's tricks. Yngwie made me put the specs down and just enjoy his masterful playing style. My Son met him when we went to a NAMM show in Anaheim. Totally classy guy. Spoke with Jr. like they were friends. My Son was just 18 and gave Yngwie one of his CD's. He said thank you very much and said not many people give him their original music. We saw him again last year and he is just as amazing as always. Small crowd but he put on a performance for Madison Square Garden. Like I said. THE GOAT!!!

Pleased to see you doing Malmsteen. Hardly anybody reacts to him. I've been through your library and did not see any Judas Priest, the METAL GODS or DIO (Ronnie James Dio, Rainbow, Black Sabbath & solo). A decade later and we all still sadly miss him deeply RIP RJD.

First! Yngwie is a great player, but if you want one more, that was taken WAY too early, check out Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn, Altitudes, or Air.
Or Becker's band with Megadeth's Marty Friedman, Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony (the song).
At the age of 16, he formed Cacophony with his friend Marty Friedman. He also played with David Lee Roth's band and recorded one album with him, A Little Ain't Enough (ALS got to him before they could even tour).
Becker's performing career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In 1996, Becker lost the ability to speak, and he now communicates with his eyes via a system developed by his father. Despite his disability, he continues composing by using a computer.
The guy is an inspiration, not only for his guitar skills, but also for the way he's been battling ALS for over 20 years now, still composing music. (To get an idea of what he composes, check out his latest masterpiece, Valley of Fire, it's got 10 or so top tier guitarists playing on it, it's incredible!)

Jason Becker is still alive, but yes his disease did rob him of awesome talents at a very early age. Jason Becker is STILL a hero for many, especially for surviving with ALS for so long. He was basically given a death sentence, but he's shown that victims of ALS don't have succumb to their disease, and they can still do great things.
He is one of the greatest of all time... and he has been my inspiration since 2007 when I heard about him and also I have learned sweep picking with his songs. So I will love to see a reaction.
I’ve saw Yngwie 4 times over the years. First timer was with the AWESOME Joe Lynn Turner on vocals and that was a special almost spiritual night....... I met both Yngwie and Joe after the show and they were both very gracious and spent a bit of time signing things for folks and chatting very polite and friendly. Yngwie is a pretty tall dude too at about 6’4” !!! Great evening topped off with a meet with the modern Mozart himself ! The other three were just as brilliant and one in particular on the Eclipse tour I took my copy of the guitar transcription book for that album with me to get it personalised which Yngwie did and the most awesome part was that there were 2 minor errors on the first print and he went direct to the pages and wrote it out as it should be in the space above the printed area on both pages ..... I was gobsmacked at this. I’d also interviewed the support act who were a Swiss act called China earlier in the day on their tour bus.
I’d taken my friend Greg along to the show as I’d recently got him into Yngwie. Greg & I met at bandcamp (how appropriate !!) this was back home in Scotland and the show was in our capital city Edinburgh at the 3000 seat Playhouse which was sold out surprisingly enough !!! I remember Greg being totally speechless for the entire show and for about an hour or two after it and the first thing he said was thanks and a massive hug, then “WTF DID I JUST SEE ?????” I knew he was hooked from then on..... we lived in the same town so I managed to give him a full education on Yngwie after that as I did have the full collection including his Alcatrazz stuff he did before going solo.

Yngwie was a ground breaker and has his very own style , I very much enjoyed his first 3 albums, just awesome!!!...the issues with yngwie is the next 20 albums didn't come close , AND they all sound the same , endless dull boring shredding nothing close to those first 3 efforts, it's yngwie though I like him to a point.
Really, Rising Force and Marching Out. So fresh and new. By the end of the eighties everybody was trying to play like this but without the passion
Rising Force Marching out and Alcatrazz. Then some albums after than have some ok stuff here and there. Eclipse is ripping actually i put it up there with the first two. It is pretty much solid all the way through though the production is kind of meh. I was actually bored of his albums by that time and that album brought me back. Fire and Ice is pretty decent as well.
darren - everybody likes anybody to a point, but that doesn't take anything away from his greatness. Yngwie is one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, and no one can ever take that away from him. He's a legend.
Btw... Odyssey, Eclipse, Seventh Sign, Magnum Opus, and the Concerto are also great albums with some of his best playing.
@@epic103 I disagree with you, everybody does not like yngwie to a point , to some folks his playing is nothing but flash and rubbish....a shrill borefest...i have friends like this..and I would turn off anything from say Madonna or red not chilli peppers and all rap, they are examples of musicians I do not like AT ALL....me personally was dazzled by him (yngwie) , he influenced me, I still like picking up my guitars and playing in his style....the concerto album was alright , magnum opus, has some great stuff , time will tell, and voodoo nights ECT. I don't know how I missed you putting this up. It just popped up for me today. When Yngwie debuted I was learning to play keyboard and drums but wished soooooo much I could play guitar. A couple of friends told me that a kid our age was burning up the scene. They introduced me to Steeler and Alcatrazz, two bands Yngwie stole the show in at just 15-17 years old. I fell in love with his guitar playing that day. Here it is almost 40 years later and I still love his music. When someone tells me they think he plays without feeling I just point them to Serenade by Steeler, Kree Nakoorie from Alcatrazz or the title track from Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force's CD Dragonfly. They're some of the pieces you can hear his talent's range in and in the performances from back in the day it's obvious how much love he had for playing/performing.

Your reaction was great. Same reaction I had the first time I heard Yngwie play, some 30 years ago. I'm a classical guitarists and electric guitarist and Yngwie has ALWAYS been my favourite electric player.
I think people are inclined to be harder on Yngwie because he both sets the bar for technique outrageously high, and has the audacity to remind you constantly in interviews. He plays a kind of shit-talking WWF heel role that musicians rarely play. He also seems bitter at how the world has moved on from his style of metal
I disagree with people saying his playing has no soul. But his playing has gotten sloppier in recent years from what I've seen.

You can say anything you want about the man he is but his passion for playing has never been subdued. He has an amazing amount of flair and although legato it is still truly incredible what he is able to coax out of the instrument. As far as guitar players go he has innovated and produces a sound and style all his own in modern music. Stop hating and just listen, he has some but not many parallels. I have seen him live and it is for certain an experience you will not forget. Stop trying to overanalyze his playing or personality and just listen to the something wonderful that he is. I have been playing for over 20yrs+ and cannot do half of what he does. Not saying it is impossible but you should find it impressive on some level or another. Be positive in your critique and understanding no matter how advanced you are at either the instrument or music, please.
