They're really cool. Not sure if it's true or not, but I heard they also have to sell lottery tickets to their shows because they're so popular in Japan that they decided the only fair way to decide who got to their shows was through a lottery, as opposed to people just being the first to order the tickets.

I’ve been told that in Japan they wear motorcycle helmets and pantyhose in order to avoid being identified and detained by police. Because if the police suspect there was drug use at a show, they will use footage and photos from the show to attempt to identify individuals who were present. Or something along those lines. But that’s just what I’ve heard. Edit:syntax

That DIR EN GREY clip is from 2007, which is when Kyo used to do self harm at almost every show. After 2008, he's only done it a handful of times since.
They aren't even the only band that's done self-harm. Shining (not the jazz-metal one, the depressive black metal one) regularly self-harms. Dead from Mayhem used to self-harm too, and admitted to getting off on seeing the reaction of the crowd. He likened it to a kind of psychological experiment. He was curious to see how different crowds reacted to seeing blood. He'd also bury his stage clothes a week before a show to make them grave-like. And used to huff a bag with a dead crow in it to create a grave high (yeah, Dead was a weird dude. IIRC, he was deeply clinically depressed, and mildly psychotic and had delusions that he was some kind of zombie-like creature with black ichor instead of blood in his veins. His suicide note also simply read, "Please forgive the mess.") As for the band, current singer Attila has been known to dress like a mummy from time to time, and I think they still line the stage with razor wire and pig heads mounted on pikes, which they toss into the crowd
Kyo from Dir En Grey is absurd live. Hands down, the best live performance I have seen. Lucky enough to have seen them 3 times. He used to do the cutting more back in the down until it caused too much scar tissue in his mouth; doesn't do it anymore.

In 2009, our youth group went to a music festival with the chariot and it was absolute bonkers. haha, A co-worker just sent me the link to this video because he knows I'm into metal and there was actually quite a lot performance art stuff in here (it's weird). Quick thing about helmets etc: The Japanese music industry functions a bit different then the ones overseas. Most Japanese bands take the biggest part of their income from fanclub fees and they sometimes do special concerts for fanclub members. I know of one where the theme was "come in a bathing suit" and people do it, because everyone who comes is a Fanclub member and is therefore inclined to follow the instructions (these things probably wouldn't work with concerts that are open to everyone, even in Japan). Btw, Kyo's self harm had a lot of performance art as well. Ever watched Marina Abramovic? During the time I didn't know about the connection to theatric arts, instead I compared it Billy Idol and Marilyn Manson who did similar things on stage. It's a way of communication. If you don't want to hear something you can shut down your senses so far that it passes you by or you just don't think about what you've heard. It doesn't NEED to touch you. Words can easily be made meaningless (even more so when they are transmitted in a different language). But in order to avoid seeing something we need to actively close our eyes. We need to decide consciously that we don't want to witness something and even then the knowledge that it happened in front of you remains inside you. That's why we can shut down the news so easily and hear about terrible events but still faint seeing blood in real life (in extreme cases of course.) To make suffering visible it takes an act of suffering. (or at least that's the theory behind it, which I am inclined to believe to a certain extend) But in Dir en grey's case things went a bit out of hand when foreign audiences came to see this exact thing and then questioned it's "realness". To prove them wrong and satisfy the masses he at least went further then originally planned. So it's a good thing self harm didn't make it into the narrative of further albums.

He was also the growler. The drummer pointed me out in the crowd of 30ish people and gave me a drum stick and told me to hit his only cymbal as fast as I could while he somewhat rhythmically beat the other parts of his drum kit, and when I say beat, I mean like fighting. The best way to describe the genre is doom industrial thrash maybe. It was awful, but I had fun.
Kind of surprised Letlive wasn't in this. Jason did some crazy stuff live
